possibly stupid question, but if A is a profinite k-ring for k a field, then I know of two definitions (which are not the same over a field of char != 0 ):
1. It is an inverse limit of genuinely finite k-rings (i.e with finitely many elements)
2. It is an inverse limit of finite-dimensional k-rings.
the latter is found in say Demazure-Gabriel
I suppose that 2) is the one one should use in general? I mean, I suppose we would want the ring of formal power series to be profinite.

Here's a hilarious thought: the passage from a category with weak equivalences to an (∞, 1)-category is essentially a vast generalisation of going from whole numbers to fractions.
