@Riccardo It's not a stupid question - in fact it's a variant of the Steenrod problem. It is related to the injectivity of the map $MO_*(X)\to H_*(X;\mathbb{F}_2)$

Unfortunately that map in general is not injective (it is surjective because it admits a splitting)
