oh true i hadn't thought of that. i guess a valid (but probably very uncommon) interpretation of "maximal subgroup" would be "subgroup of maximum size"
Minor point: after seeing "This CW answer intends to remove this question from the Unanswered queue" N times, it's getting hard not to think of it as clutter.
On a site made for answering questions, one does not have to justify the act of answering a question.
