I'm following this tutorial, and i'm runing ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS

Pressing Ctrl alt f1 doesn't kill the GUI for me

It could be ubuntu set their display manager to start on TTY 1 since that guide was written (at least at one time it was common to run X on TTY 7, accessible with Ctrl Alt F7)

Also, there's seems to be an official PPA for nvidia drivers, you might want to use that instead of downloading from nvidia, so you get automatic updates

Yeah ctrl alt f5 worked for me

I also had to do some different steps to disable x

But I had to ssh in because it disabled the terminal interface
