I already read most of these answers, and altough they're technically true (e.g. what brecht says), they don't get you any further, because it's not always an option to use EXR.
As I said: "I just need a workaround EXCEPT using an EXR image that my game engine can't import anyway."
So I did what you suggested in the "What is the Alpha Convert node used for?" answer and it works I can finally see my flame on transparent background.
