@egtwobits quickest option IMO while docs are lacking, is turn on developer tools in user prefs then right click view source on most parts of the UI.

@10Replies wow the question on radicals went radical. always ironic when judgemental comes up on a site with voting Find it very interesting to check out the voting record of users as an indicator.

Q: What is the conventional way to input n^x?

user14554If I have a length or angle and type "=", blender enters math mode where I can type equations to set the input of a transformation. Even a basic hand-held calculator can calculate the square root of a number. However, when I type the ever-common 2^(1/2), blender is incapable of registering "^" s...

They can judge all they want, but the moment they interfere is the moment your rhetoric becomes a complete lie. Whether or not something is "helpful" is up to the one you are allegedly helping. Anything otherwise is simply opinion and is the gateway to racism and genocide.
If anything, your assumption proves this by assuming I answer questions to make myself feel good. If I did, I would answer questions here, but I don't because I'm busy helping real people in real-life with real problems, everything on this site is nothing but novelty and isn't worth real effort
Wow this guy is cool, helping real people in real life with real problems.

this one would make a good meta post
I do donate. It's only "free" because that is the only way the foundation can make money from it, they are not as generous as they seem. People only answer questions on this site to make themselves feel good, not for the sake of others. If it were anything otherwise, people would be allowed to freely express themselves without criticism and arbitrary editing because the vested interest of the asker would always be placed first. I know people who actually help save the world and they don't waste their time doing this Q&A stuff for their own sake. — user14554 1 hour ago
the so called "vested interest of the asker"

user14554 is a walking copypasta

It's a new generation of gimme gimme gimme, for example how long did it take for you to find links in your answer 5 seconds?

I understand why it might be difficult to find the answer without having a background in coding, but that doesn't explain the salty attitude
All knowing user14554 has determined that Blender, Python and every known programming language that uses a caret for XOR is incorrect.

He is not alone with the attitude. blender.stackexchange.com/a/126411/15543
"i want to do something my way.. .why doesn't it work"
"but every one else does it my way"
"my way is so good I can't believe everyone else doesn't do it my way"
"it still doesn't work... pleeeeeeeeeeeeease help"

damn entitled users

@DuarteFarrajotaRamos Hi

@batFINGER Thanks! I found a working combo by inspecting the layout files as you suggested.
bl_space_type = "VIEW_3D"
bl_region_type = "UI"
bl_category = "Mesh Align Plus"
and I had to specifically remove bl_context (make sure it was not present)
it seems you MUST specify a bl_category along with "VIEW_3D" and "UI"

3:47 PM
Good afternoon :)

@batFINGER "vested interest of the asker would always be placed first." Oh please.... nooo!!!! Sometimes when I'm feeling extra nice I will answer just to help the person who asked, but priories 1 through 1000 all involve making stuff useful to the plethora of people who find existing questions via google. Helping one person is a waste of time when you could help hundreds instead.

@10Replies Where did you find that demo?

@skiwi If I remember correctly, that looks like the end product of the cg cookie wood shader tutorial cgcookie.com/lesson/wood
Unfortunately its not free.

Oh I notice yeah

4:52 PM
Maybe a stupid question, but how do I open the cycles material editor in a new project?
Ah just found something, my window setup is still a mess

5:14 PM
I don't understand... I open blendswap.com/blends/view/78546 and append the DECWood5 to my project, and it renders but it doesn't render the wooden nerves correctly
It's all solid woodish color
It's like the displacement part does nothing, which I observe when I decouple that node it doesn't change the output
blendswap.com/blends/view/78546 apparently it has to do with the DECWoodGrain5 displacement settings, and they work differently on different projects

5:57 PM
@skiwi UV mapping issues?

6:45 PM
@GiantCowFilms Not sure, but fiddling around with the settings of the displacement part fixed it
I still need to read more up on terminology :/ There was a point several years ago where I knew more :D
Even wrote my own toy 3D engine with GLSL shaders

:/
Is there a reason why the difference operator can go so wrong? Earlier it always went fine, though one time I noticed odd artificats
My design is pretty simple... I have a plate, and I want to carve out a grid of cells

@skiwi Maybe inconsistent normals?

@someonewithpc Would that be possible if they are generated by using the api?
Via Python I mean

9:04 PM
Ah... apparently it can't handle the situation when you use the difference exactly at edges

9:33 PM
Dang, foamed plastic is really hard to make, even googling leaves very few close to satisfying results

Perhaps ask a question on blender SE and put a bounty on it
People will do anything for those sweet sweet internet points

Haha :P

9:57 PM
It's not foam, but might be, not too happy about the glass yet though, and when rendering the black part (Diffuse BSDF of almost black) suddenly becomes transparent :/
Also with same amount of ray traces or how it's called
