12:00 AM
@RadishofKnowledge maybe in an hour?
Would that week for you guys?
*work
@RadishofKnowledge BTW, are you on Steam?

I'm on steam, right now. Actually.

12:18 AM
lol, so am I

The only steam game I even play anymore is Cities: Skylines.
Of which I am atrocious at.

I have been playing Creativerse, kinda cool Minecraft style freebie in Alpha right now

Nifty.
I often play Factorio and RimWorld (both early access, neither on Steam).

12:31 AM

@iKlsR did you order one ?

Nope, not yet
I never order something brand new (released) even after how long it's been about
I got my oneplus one about 9 months after
Maybe December?

good strategy

December? Like the Collective Soul December?
(It's probably too old for you youngsters.)

@EBrown I'm not from le americas

12:36 AM
@iKlsR D:

@Chebhou yeah, couple dozen reviews and perhaps an iteration or two, better software, more games etc

i think Hawken does support it

I've been meaning to get Hawken for like what 3 years now.. lol

Hawken?

it's free

12:39 AM
Free mech game
awesome robots

Wow, it's actually moderately pretty.

From reddit

yeah i have been playing it for 2 weeks and it's awesome

I'm far too addicted to Cities: Skylines and Battlefield 4.

@iKlsR lol so true

12:43 AM
@EBrown BF4 is beautiful, I'm mostly playing Kerbal Space Program and Dirty Bomb now
sweet new fps

@iKlsR Which version of BF4 do you play?
(Console, that is.)

@EBrown I don't game on consoles
I can have my games on ultra at 100fps, 1440p
lol

Aha, you should totally add me on Origin/Battle Log.

I also have my xbox one wireless controller, it's pretty nice
Dirt 3 and Project Cars are gorgeous

Nifty. I don't play racing games.

12:45 AM
i tried dirt 3 but i think it needs a wheel to play it right
it's too hard using controllers

I refuse to buy anything other than a PC/mouse for gaming.

why not all 3!!!
and I use my wacom to play fruit ninja, lol
ran through like 3 nibs

lol

lol
we murder people everyday |o|, so many drowning men lol

12:49 AM
I'd post a picture of my desk, but it would give away my alcoholism.

@EBrown you already showed us

@iKlsR That was work, I think.

ah

Also, I now own an Amazon Echo. (Which is pretty amazing.)

I want to try it one day

12:50 AM
It's pretty fun.
It also plays audio from my phone via bluetooth.

neato, the other day I "hacked" together a surround sound with spotify on 3 machines
configure a static ip and a little python and play all 3 at once
wee

Nifty. I'm not that fancy.
I'm lazy, actually.
And I shouldn't be.

goodnight ( or whatever it i out there )

gnight
Oh wow, my childhood was great. I remember this, like 17 years ago

1 hour later…
2:15 AM
@gandalf3 I remember there was a way to check if your mesh is manifold. I just seem unable to find it.

@GiantCowFilms Select manifold edges?
Ctrl Alt Shift M

@gandalf3 Ah thanks
That worked, but apparently the soft body sim wants more than manifold

?

My mesh dissapears into tiny little blobs on frame 2

odd

2:20 AM
The edge push and pull are set to nearly one....

2:47 AM
Behold! The battle of the Hair Boats!!!!

.

@X-27 ?

3:13 AM
@GiantCowFilms My new avatar.

Avatars can't be animated

3:55 AM
it isn't animated. I only have the still one done... for now...

4:33 AM
@X-27 Couldn't you have imgur linked it...
@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ BTW, someone solved the tape measure
1
A: Is it possible to simulate tape measure bending with Soft Body physics?

CarloPlastic deformation & Stiff quads I made several changes to the provided Blendfile to achieve this result. I'll try to summerize them focusing on the most important ones in a qualitative way, as to make a simulation look good what matter is the "whole": Stiff quads should be enabled. The op...

@gandalf3 @David are issues with addons topical? blender.stackexchange.com/q/44467/3127

5:32 AM
@GiantCowFilms yes

6 hours later…
11:30 AM
Hi there!
I'm working on a project to create an "IDE" for making fountain programs. The "IDE" should allow program visualization, should support loading / saving / editing fountain projects. A fountain program is just a set of lines, like "Nozzle #5, change color to green, set height to 2m at 0:05". I'm looking for an advise, which engine should I use. Is it possible to implement this project using Blender scripting (preferably, Python scripting only, i.e. without extending blender source code)?

1 hour later…
12:47 PM
@GiantCowFilms cool

1 hour later…
2:02 PM
@GiantCowFilms I could have- yah, I'll do that.
@GiantCowFilms done.

2:18 PM
...
So.
I've been thinking for a while. How many of you guys have created a full blown animation? Something big, more than a minute or two. Good lighting, nice textures, ect?
And if you have, how long did It take you? Did you do everything by yourself?

@BookWyrm17 I'm not aware of anybody in this chatroom having made anything so long or substantial (though I could be wrong). I certainly haven't.

Thats kinda what I thought.
My goal over the past forever has been to make lots of animations. For some reason I always thought I would do it by myself.
But if you look at the credits to any animated movie (at least, any good one. HTTYD 1&2 are my favorites) you'll see that they have TEAMS of animators dedicated to making each and every little thing. There are people who sit and make sure the characters HAIR is great throughout the whole show. There are about 20 people dedicated to lighting. The creation of a character takes an army. Its HUGE. And that is why they can make all these shows.

@BookWyrm17 Yeah, that sounds about right.
You're going to have to be clever about it if you want to put together something of the caliber of HTTYD by yourself. Or lower your expectations. Or get access to a team of subordinates. Or spend a really long time on it.

2:35 PM
No no, I'm not heading for HTTYD. :D (yet. Eventually I want to be a part of a place that does that kinda thing)
I've been wondering how I could set up a team, to see how it works and just experiment with an animation made by many, and I keep thinking about this place. I'm kinda hesitant, cause I don't really know quite how everyone would react, or anything, who would be available, who would be willing, ect ect. But I think it would be amazing if this chat room got together and made a video, a short, something interesting.

@BookWyrm17 None of us
I am working on it, but as you said, most animated films have a dozen modelers, a dozen or more riggers and animators, a dozen lighting people, texturing people to get you to the moon . . . it is crazy
I find the script is the easy part :P
I probably will have to make an amazing trailer or something and hope I can scare up some funding

That was to the point.
I guess now I wanna know, why not? I'm still 16, so I don't have the same, time consuming problems the rest of you all probably have. (life in general is a lot of work)
Wait now I'm kinda confused.
I'm talking a short, something like 10 minutes long.

Exactly
Ten minutes = forever
24*60*10=number of frames

Yeaaah. But it would be 1/5 the amount of forever if there were five people working on it :D

2:40 PM
@BookWyrm17 I'd be happy to contribute, if it's a story worth telling.
10 minutes is pretty long though, especially for your first serious animation.

10 minutes is almost 15k frames, and of course that is the bare minimum FPS you could possibly use. Each frame will probably take a good 30 minutes even if optimized . . . so about forever to render
So even if you have the texturing and animating down perfect, rendering will kill you :/

@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ Eh, if you aren't working under a deadline, render time isn't all that relevant.

I've gone totally out of my normal comfort zone here so I might as well try and convince someone.
@Gwenn What we would be doing is making it original for the group. No one person comes up with the story, so you would have a part in making sure its a story you want to work on.

You will need to use renderfarms at that point
@Gwenn Sort of true, but not really

+/- a few orders of magnitude, anyway.

2:44 PM
Oh yes rendering would take quite a while. Still, it would be divided among the computers working on it anyway, or maybe even among some other people who wanted to help but didn't have time.

Two years of rendering
!!!
yikes

Its technically a renderfarm even if there's only five people rendering it, right? :P
Hoo boy is that divided or not?

Good thing there ARE renderfarms out there

600 hours of rendering

2:45 PM
Yeah, but I could have three computers rendering at the same time.

Probably a couple times that if I call a few of my friends.

If I change the FPS back to 24 we can get it done in a year though

If render time is the only issue you have, you're in pretty good shape.

Anything I make will probably be much shorter than 10 minutes for starters

2:47 PM
I could have a few computers going too
Yeah, 10 minutes might be a bit long.. :P

Now this all depends on what detail you want and all those decisions you have to make. You could make a stylized animation render in a few weeks.

Yeah, I'm all for contributing, but there have to be realistic expectations about what can be done. I don't think a 10 minute long animation is a good idea for a group of first-timers, unless it's all abstract or something.

@BookWyrm17 I think the "10 minutes" thing is going to scare off most people in this room, but if you lower the expectation to a ~2 minute short, at least to start, you might get a few more people interested in helping out.

I agree. We should make a spreadsheet with what everyone is good at too so it is easier to ask people if they can do X task

2:50 PM
If, somehow, things go better/faster than expected (this never happens--see "planning fallacy"), then you can expand it out if you want.

That makes a lot more sense.
I waaass going from HTTYD to 10 minutes :D

@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ What's the longest serious animation made in Blender to date? Sintel? And that was like 10 minutes wasn't it?

I was going from Wall-E, Star Trek and the Halo promotional videos to a feature film . . . but decided better of it
@Gwenn yes, I think so

2:52 PM
A two minute short sounds about perfect. Now its more like 5 months of rendering, undivided :D

Yay!
Now for a story
And a style
Photoreal? (cringes)
Abstract?
Paper?

Yeah!
Do you think anyone else will want to help?

Claymation?
@BookWyrm17 Maybe
Especially if you show effort and progress

I tried actual claymation and its HARD

Not photorealistic. shudders

2:53 PM
@BookWyrm17 yeah
Better in 3D

Ok so Photo is out :D

Maybe we should get the story and then decide what style best fits it

@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ That sounds reasonable.
Do we want to animate an existing story or create something of our own?
I am more than happy to help with storycraft.

Something original would be nice, but it doesn't have to be

I would suggest Minecraft, cause its very simple, while you can still get some great stuff from it, but I might be biased, and some people don't exactly know what to do with it...
An original story. We could base it off of a song?
Whenever I hear a song I like I get a story out of it

2:56 PM
Minecraft is over saturating the stream if you know what I mean.

yeeeaaahhh :P Lotsa that
Do we start with the story or do we start with the world that the story will be in?
Like, do we want a real life theme, or a fantasy theme, or a sci-fi theme?

Doesn't matter really
Just start spewing ideas ;)

I'm not sure what our first steps should be. Probably we should figure out how many people are interested in helping first.

One will be bound to stick
@Gwenn Maybe

Because that dictates a lot of what we do later.

2:59 PM
mmhm. So we tag a bunch of people and say "Hey, wanna be a part of this?"

If it's just three people, for example, then that pretty heavily limits what story/style options are available, especially if those three people have a limited skillset.

yeah... Now I feel kinda useless. I've been learning and learning but you two are still way better than me.
I'll do what I can though.

@BookWyrm17 I'm not better than you at 3D stuff, almost certainly.
:P

hehheh, maybe. It depends on what exactly we are doing with it. Like, all my bones break when I try and rig them :/

3:02 PM
I have never done a rig, ever. :P

Yeah. Uh oh. This is encouraging. Immna take another tutorial. Lets also get some more people into this.
Who do you think might want to be a part of this?

@BookWyrm17 At this stage, just try to find people who are interested enough to want to hear more details as they come out. Don't ask anybody for real commitment yet, or you'll end up turning people away.

Yeah, thats a good long term plan.
Oh man my dad just told me about a service project I have in ten minutes... I need to get my scout stuff ready.
Ahaha thats awesome :D

@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ I was hoping to get my avatar in there, since I think I had the best use of the Amazing Grace hat. But ah well. :)
That Onion Knight hat was tricky.

I'm going to write up a bunch of short story ideas on the way to scouts and back. You guys think of some too! I'll be back in a couple hours...

1 hour later…
4:14 PM
@BookWyrm17 I can easily spend over a month working on a still image. In fact, they take so long I usually loose interest before I'm finished. And those are stills. Animations are far worse.

4:30 PM
We have a tie as to the date for the HDR contest, through in your vote and join the fun! strawpoll.me/6460037

@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ maybe later today, sorry you missed us. :D i failed but he did fantastic, so it wasn't super great anyway. :)
@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ no:(
@someonewithpc that explains it...

why? is there something on steam i need to do?

@GiantCowFilms well maybe we will need your attention to detail :D Really, if you want to help, even a little, help a little.

@BookWyrm17 help? Are youg going to try make an animated film?!?!

4:40 PM
i voted, but i don't think it helped the tie. :P

The scoutmaster hasn't come to pick me up yet (he's laaaate) so I still have some time.
@GiantCowFilms Not a film. A 2 minute short. People from the chat, working together to actually complete something.

What is going to be the look, style, and script?

Thats exactly what we are deciding now
literally

I would go for pseudo-realism.
Which is where you make realistic textures and stuff, but don't expect to fool anyone for real footage

hehheh, the others shied away from photorealistic. But I guess Pseudo isn't really photo now, is it?

4:41 PM
yeah

lol, i love this site!!! strawpoll.me/6473683

lol... i'm not that cranky

go back to bed...
lol

4:43 PM
:P

I made a google Doc to get everyone's ideas for something. I added a few of mine, plus one that I made a long time ago (I mostly added it cause it was the most detailed one)
If you like them or you want to add more, go ahead! https://docs.google.com/document/d/10nLKuCXzFfmYwHDpuCtiXsLNEkVTVMOeCYIfdq602L0/edit?usp=sharing

With a quiz like that, what answers do you expect

@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ @Gwenn there's a doc up there to get the scripting and stuff done.

You know what I've always thought would be a more viable film project. Create a 40 second or so "clip" from a larger film. It has all the learning opportunities, and also can be finished theoretically before you're fedup with working on the project.

4:45 PM
Yeah
At least to get us started anyways
@BookWyrm17 Your name shows on the google doc, just FYI

ah. Oh well
I haven't figured out how to disable that. All my online friends seem to figure out my name

@BookWyrm17 it's a cool name though

It is linked to your google account

:P I like it.

4:47 PM
Try using a different account

Good plan. At least for things I am sharing with others

My soft body dissapears on frame two.
driving me mad.

it still looks good to me. To my unsophisticated eyes :D

On frame one it looks okayish
on frame two, there is nothing to look at except a tiny segmant of stem

Oh I see. Thats weird

5:01 PM
@GiantCowFilms sis it colapse on itself?

No, its millions of kilomoters wide acording to the dimensions panel.
its like it exploded or something.

wow
No duplicate parts?

Do you want the file?
'cause here it is: pasteall.org/blend/39996
@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ Not that I could find

5:20 PM
i gtg

5:31 PM
this is how @GiantCowFilms describes himself. lol:

@RadishofKnowledge That is my theme song
I have it on my ipod

heheh

your theme song.. XD

smoke break is your theme song, right?

@RadishofKnowledge That is so country it is one step away from a parody.

except i don't like the video, cause chris janson is so skinny
@GiantCowFilms i like that song!
yeah, it's way worse

yeah ... we get a bit of it here

@GiantCowFilms what you got against a guy thats happy to be alive?

small town life - my truck - country girls - etc. That is just to country for me

5:43 PM
he likes a fresh cut field though, as a cow, don't you appreciate that?
and his church.
and he likes music
and that was "girl" not "girls" theres a difference
and he didn't say he loves his truck, just that he like driving it across railroad tracks
and i love doing that in my van too.
especially if there are people int he back seat. :P
and i like watching the train go by
my other theme song is this:

:P
bbl

2 hours later…
7:41 PM
@EBrown I want to get Cities: Skylines
I've been watching a let's play series for it and it looks like a lot of fun
Plus I just like those sort of games
Roller Coaster Tycoon was (and still is somewhat) a big part of my "childhood"

7:56 PM
@TARDISMaker we're going to make an animation, wanna help?

@RadishofKnowledge Maybe
What are you doing?

8:13 PM
no idea
@RadishofKnowledge Ah, just a really cool free game. Very similar to Minecraft clones, but with some neat twists

8:38 PM
@RadishofKnowledge Animation of...?

He doesn't know
We are still deciding

Oh, ok
So, a short movie?

The blender.SE open movie project? :D

Or even simpler. But yes, along those lines

@someonewithpc Only 2 minutes long or so is the plan.

8:39 PM
@gandalf3 That would be nice

ikr

@gandalf3 We could call it that
Although, copyright might be a problem...

I like the name. Is there copyright on it?

@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ Ah, okay

8:41 PM
@Gwenn Not sure...

I'm in

We could ask..?

@gandalf3 Can you ask the SE people if we can use that name?

Is @GiantCowFilms? Cause if he is we've probably got a director of photography

8:42 PM
Would we need to ask the Blender Foundation/Institute too?

I don't think it's copyrighted at all
I'd think that we could use it without asking anyone
I think we'd only have to potentially ask SE
maybe

@zeffii Thanks, and could you write your answer ?

@TARDISMaker "I don't think" won't help you in court...

@someonewithpc yes... But there's a pretty low chance that anyone cares about us using that name, and an even lower chance that those people would care enough to bring it to court

8:45 PM
just blame @gandalf3 for it it's his idea

We should still avoid stepping on the toes of people we like.

okay

@Gwenn And it's not hard at all

@someonewithpc Use the name for what?
The title of the movie?
The project codename?
Our catchphrase??

@gandalf3 Yeah, that

8:50 PM
oh.

Or at least project name
@gandalf3 Or that
Like the Blender Institute does

I don't think it'll be a-... erm. I mean.. I'm not a lawyer and <insert disclaimer here> and stuff..

@gandalf3 Probably, but just to be safe, right?

Just call it CultOfNewb, CON for short
lol

@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ From the Unencyclopedia?
That works

9:28 PM
@poor lol, thanks for the votes!
@X-27 Two weeks ago, I discovered a link to my profile page in the 'about me' section of your profile page ;) — poor 3 hours ago
that link goes to current_user.
anyone who clicks on it will be directed to their profile page :-)

9:56 PM
That's really awesome
Cool seeing the process he used
@X-27 :D
That's awesome

10:38 PM
@TARDISMaker It's friggin dope, man.
I love that game.
I get my rear kicked every time I play, but it's all good.

:D
It looks like a lot of fun
I'll have to see if I can get notifications or something on it so I get told when it's on sale
Since steam really likes giving us discounts

@TARDISMaker Steam is terrible...
DRMs suck

I just cleared out my email inbox
Feels so good not to see a bunch of promotional emails that I forgot to delete on the front page
@someonewithpc I'm not really going to complain, they're helping to make gaming on linux possible...

@TARDISMaker Still, DRMs
It is wise of you to avoid this (possible) holy war :P

DRM is pretty handy sometimes.
Especially when you write a complex programme that costs a lot of money.

10:52 PM
@EBrown Do you really want to start an holy war?
2

yay! i got my computer working!! it has a bad power supply

@RadishofKnowledge Yeah, but which one?

@someonewithpc we don't know yet

@RadishofKnowledge No idea, then?

well, it's either going to be one of gwenns or gfcs
