@gandalf3 I think I just gave you the final needed vote for the gold rendering badge :-)

@X-27 :D thanks for the flag btw ;)
@GiantCowFilms I just remembered that I meant to mention it to someone here and that was the nearest place I could find to type words into :P
@GiantCowFilms I'll dig out the code and get into a state where it at least runs (I wrote it a while ago)
Not sure if git is worth it for a one-off type script like this :P
but if you want I can put it on github

@gandalf3 Use a gist then

Think pixar will take me?
Ahhh its bad!

3:28 PM
@GiantCowFilms That is a whole lot better than even my best walk cycle- I could never get one that looked remotely good.
@gandalf3 I'm upvoting answers with 0 votes simply because I can't stand them, and when I saw that one, I thought,"Seriously, a link only from gandalf?"

I'm trying to make a character run... is making a cycle better than moving them each time?

@BookWyrm17 Eh...
Depends on what you are doing

Well, he's running for a few steps, then jumps over a pit.

In my opinion, unless you are a good animator, roto-mation is the way to go.

rotomation?

3:39 PM
Its a term derived from rotoscoping which basically means animate over real footage

Ok.
So get a picture and move the character over that? So he matches?

@BookWyrm17 With video, yes

Ok, that makes sense. I'm gonna finish these few steps really, and then show you. This is the second time I've animated someone running, and he looks better than last time, but its always good to get more opinions. Especially when you are still beginning :D

I'm not a good animator as you can see
I never really have taken the time to learn properly

4:13 PM
@X-27 well.. at least it was an internal link
:P

4:24 PM
@GiantCowFilms :O I didn't know those exist
But that's perfect :D

@gandalf3 :D
I used it for my egg protector script

There are some stupid hardcoded paths and stuff, so I'll want to clean that up a bit before uploading..

@GiantCowFilms you can still tell me how it looks.

And probably write comments

@BookWyrm17 True
@gandalf3 Ah yes
I should write more of those in general
@David Do you know of a way to have multiple copies of a linked & animated armature in a scene?

4:44 PM
woo I considered rendering with textures just cause its cool but its going so fast without them that I don't even really have to wait
and it doesn't need textures to show you the animation process
I forgot how to get actually get a video from the sequence editor...
how do I turn the pictures into a video? I did this before... but that was a month ago
ah ha
thanks for the help
:P

5:07 PM
@GiantCowFilms are you on linux

@gandalf3 No
Windows

ah.

I am never on linux
unless it is my remote webserver

I'll have to make all this path manipulation stuff properly cross-platform then

but that has half a gig for ram, so you cant do much with it....
@gandalf3 That won't be too much work will it?

5:08 PM
probably not

I can maybe do it....

(it's python :D)
Perhaps I'll just upload it and we can see what we want to do
(you can apply patches etc. to gists, right?)

I wish I knew an easier way to do this try this link
https://youtu.be/1_4ElwZ57uI
Tell me how it looks! I feel like parts of it are too fast... and others slow.

not bad!
methinks you're right, the run cycle feels a little jerky

@BookWyrm17 That is pretty good
a tad jittery, and the jump at the end didn't quite look right

5:32 PM
@GiantCowFilms ^^
likely won't run (I didn't get around to fixing the paths completely )
When I wrote that I had something like this in mind
But I'm not sure if that will actually work that well
It might be better to just go the brute-force route and use difflib to compare every file to every other file, then go from there
It only has to run once after all :P

@gandalf3 There is a point where your flowchart breaks into to branches... I'm rather lost as to how they come back together

cool

@GiantCowFilms that might be why that approach doesn't work :P
(everything ought to end up going to "return path")

5:48 PM
@gandalf3 Ah
I'm going to read through the code now... give me a min
difflib.SequenceMatcher() Man I wish it was that easy in PHP
Although there probably is a library
@gandalf3 So I read it.... how is it not working?
I mean when you run it what happens?

It ends up trying to ls a directory which doesn't exist
I did something wrong in the main loop logic
But I think my whole approach might be over-complicated

In order to test this, do I need a local copy of the manual and wiki?

yes

Oh dear
so you said there was a bug that caused it to list non existent directories, right?

right
But I'm not sure if it's worth trying to fix
Since when it's fixed it still may not do what we want

6:03 PM
So are you sure this function: testManualExist(url) works correctly?
You should try it on a non-existent directory the program turns up to see if it returns the correct value
@gandalf3 ?
@gandalf3 I'm still slightly slow on this point

It might be easier to start from scratch

Okay......
I'm a bit behind on what we are doing here.

The idea is to output a CSV (or similar) relating wiki urls with manual urls
Which can be used to set up redirects from the wiki to the manual

Ah yes....
so we need to scan the manual for the matching page for each wiki url
And your program is putting out false positives....

It is?
@GiantCowFilms We could try the "cycles" approach and go backwards, scanning the wiki for manual urls
That way would avoid looking for pages which don't exist

6:16 PM
@gandalf3 We might miss some
but then that might be okay
@gandalf3 That makes sense, since unless there is a manual page for every wiki page, some just don't have a place to link

yep

Okay, so I guess write it.............?

If you want

I mean't you
actually XD
I dunno why I said I

XD

6:28 PM
its not like you cant right it, and @ARadish has put me over my head with his game already
@gandalf3 Freudian narcissistic slip, saying I when I mean you
Of course a non narcissistic person would have put that as:
Freudian narcissistic slip, saying I when you mean someone else

@GiantCowFilms wait, i put you over? lol

:P

you decided you wanted to be project manager or something!!!

I am?
I was just being proactive

well you kinda made it clear you wanted to lead the project
the only reason you're overloaded is because i need to do everything your way, and thats fine, but you're going to have to reteach me because i only know how to do stuff the way i've done it since day1.

6:32 PM
@ARadish Yeah
That is my inner OCD micro-manager

so if you don't want to be overloaded, cut back on micro-management and let me do what i do best, but be aware that things may not be done "right" even if they work just fine

@ARadish The way you do some things though......
:P

@GiantCowFilms i know.... art is beautiful.. :P

Happy Halloween everyone
Topic for Competition for the 0 people who aren't to busy Render some candy!

Actually, for once I am not all that busy.
I might sketch some candy. Probably won't make anything in Blender, though.
I've been keeping myself too busy, so I'm forcing myself to take this weekend off.
Which right now translates to a lot of reading, some hiking, and some sketching.

10:08 PM
Speaking of sketches, here are some I did today:
Some I did yesterday:
And one I did a while ago, since I wasn't satisfied with what I put together for the 'sleep' topic:

10:42 PM
@Gwenn really good!

10:57 PM
@ARadish Thanks!
Just drew this:

11:34 PM
i drew a boot... i'll go get it
