@gandalf3 have you ever tried a trackball? back years ago at work I had a kensington trackball and it was AWESOME! I never wanted to go back to a regualr mouse after that. The only problem was that different models have the ball have different amounts of resistance and it makes a huge difference how much it has. Plus, they were very expensive, like $75 for one. But, I've been tempted to get one again

@ThomBlairIII Nope, never tried one.
Maybe I will though :)

everybody in our office had one and never wanted to go back to regular mice
it's hard though to know which model to get because they all seem to have different types of ball roll resistance and I don't know how to tell without trying one if it's the kind I like...so it's hard to order one online without trying it first
this is the kind I think I had
problem for blender though is it doesn't have a MMB
A trackball is a pointing device consisting of a ball held by a socket containing sensors to detect a rotation of the ball about two axes—like an upside-down mouse with an exposed protruding ball. The user rolls the ball with the thumb, fingers, or the palm of the hand to move a pointer. Compared with a mouse, a trackball has no limits on effective travel; at times, a mouse can reach an edge of its working area while the operator still wishes to move the screen pointer farther. With a trackball, the operator just continues rolling, whereas a mouse would have to be lifted and re-positione...

@ThomBlairIII That is a problem :P

the good news is that the 4 mouse buttons can be reprogrammed to be whatever you want
what kind of music do you like gandalf?

Classical

1:25 AM
nice....any favorites? I usually don't like classical, but I have always liked one I had by Saint Saens, but I can't remember the name
I think this is it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDxGQ5t4lvI
I also like Ennio Morricone's "Vita Nostra":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szQPVUuUJaE
However, I really like a lot of classical Indian music (Gandharva)...here's one I like a lot:

Q: Sharp edges on a curved surface

SpyCharI have an image explanation of what I want to achieve. Here it is: Right now the whole edge is sharp. It is giving me a really hard time. Also here is the model: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zvempvps0r4815j/glock_forum2.blend Thanks in advance :)

@ThomBlairIII So many.. One that just came up on youtube I that I particularly like is the Symphony Fantastique by Berlioz

I also like some Chinese/Japanese classical:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUbBU87MRwY

I love beethoven ode to joy

1:44 AM
nice...I'll listen to them later on once I finish writing this answer to a question...
:)
I'm listening to Symphony Fantastique by Berlioz right now...
:)
@Vader I'll give that one a try too

@ThomBlairIII use Shift E to set mean crease as well

@Vader thanks! I didn't know that
@gandalf3 yeah, this really does sound nice

MiguellissimoI am trying to compile the blender sources and follow the instruction from here: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:Doc/Building_Blender/Linux/Generic_Distro/CMake I am in the step "Automatic CMake Setup", but when I call "make" the compilation ended with the following result: ... used as in...

This is easy. Blender Internal: quick rendering. Cycles: more accurate, making it easier to achieve photo realism. I leave the task of a detailed answer to someone more knowledgeable than I. — Nathan Osman Feb 24 at 18:17

Q: Spawn planes around a circle?

Maik Klein I am trying to create skirt out of leafes but it is actually a pain to position them. Is it possible to create this procedurally? So that I just create a circle and say spawn 20 textured rectangles around it, would this be possible?

5:21 PM
@gandalf @vader hey guys, what do you think about how to help this guy...he commented he doesn't want mean crease, so I don't know what to say:

well it's no wonder he is using a edge loop to make the edges harder

Q: Extruded Part disappears after switching from Edit Mode into Object Mode

BlendedUserAs the title says my newly added Parts in my mesh disappears when i change from edit into object Mode. And if i change the position of my mesh in edit mode it`s still at the same spot in object Mode. My mesh is rigged and weight painted, i also made a few animations. I already checked my laye...

@ThomBlairIII your gif are always high quality what do you use?

@Vader I'm using LICEcap with a frame rate of 24.
The only downside is that it's kind of a race because the GIF can't be more than 2MB in size...
:(

you can always upload to other sites and still embed them

how do you do that?
I don't know how to embed without using the "add picture" icon at the top of the "compose answer" window

![](url)
licecap seems good, I think i will use that

ok, thanks, I'll try that...do I have to use the [] part?

6:45 PM
yeah
that's for the description

oh, ok, good to know, thanks!
is there a format for what you put in the [], or can I just type anything I want in there?

I never add a descption

oh ok, thanks

beaware that most image hosts suck
for example many will not give you a direct link to a image you uploaded
I think you will have noticed that the images you upload have an extnestion
.png .jpg .gif
crappy hosts will not give you a linki

7:06 PM
oh, interesting...thanks
which is your favorite host?

all of the ones I have used have gone to poop
Idk maybe @iKlsR or @gandalf3 know any

too bad...
:|
hey, your rep is rapidly approachiong the 4K mark! congrats!
a few more days of some good questions and you'll be there...what privs do you get?

just some moderator stuff
nothing good
best thing was at 1k and 2k rep

what happens at 1k & 2k?

1k you can edit and it does not need to be approved
2k see delted questions

7:14 PM
nice!
ah, also cool!
@vader about the extruded object disappearing on the guy's arm: I just extruded that same face and the extrusion disappears for some reason after switching out of edit mode. I wonder if you have to set a keyframe for the extrusion in the beginning of the animation? It might be that the size & shape of objects need to have keyframes also.

I don't do much animation, I just know it has something to do with that

7:39 PM
@Vader I just figured it out...it was the Shape Keys...I've never used them before, but it appears they were responsible.

@ThomBlairIII you got rid of the shape keys, what if OP needs them?
that is getting rid of the problem, not solving it. I think

no idea...op'll have to figure out how to make proper shape keys with the extruded face
@Vader I agree, but at least op will have a place to start researching

but still

yeah, I know...what should I do?
I would have posted my answer in the comments section, but I didn't know how to post the animated gif in a comment
here comes Gandalf...@gandalf what do you think about these shape keys & my answer?

hm?

7:51 PM
@gandalf3 what do you think about how to answer blender.stackexchange.com/questions/7984/…
I provided a partial answer, just a point for op to start researching, not a full comprehensive answer

aug, Internet issues..
yesterday, by iKlsR
Use http://gfycat.com/

can you embed gifcats?

@Vader Ask the owner, I guess..
@ThomBlairIII I think I know what he's saying.. I'll try to clarify

@gandalf3 awesome! thanks!

I do they show up in SE?

7:57 PM
@Vader No, but they come with normal gif links too
(If you click on it you can see the html 5 version)

hmm, not great quality

@Vader That was my bad, I tried to get under 2MB and gave up. I had somehow lost the original image sequence, so I just uploaded the one I had..

oh

@ThomBlairIII No images in comments (you can link to images hosted elsewhere though, e.g. gfycat). The answer looks fine to me, I haven't use shapekeys much either :P

ok, thanks
:)
I wonder how op got them in the first place...
when I've used rigs and animated figures, I never used them. who knows

8:06 PM
Hm.. I've always wondered how you would do something like this in blender :)

@gandalf3 interesting, I know, the amount of physics already in blender is astonishing, and it'd be even more awesome if there were more physics settings and material presets that incorporated all the relevant properties of the material, i.e. hardness, brittleness, tinsel strength of the glass, etc.

jezz 10 million frames

yeah, don't blink!

they must have been scrubbing the timeline forever to fing the impact

o.O

8:10 PM
interesting, I never thought of that...
I bet they have a way of dealing with that, since they must have run into that problem
I wonder what it is

Maybe they played it back at 1,000,000 fps

I was just jokin

yup, or maybe the frames per second increases as you zoom in on the area you want
@Vader oh...
:p

lulz

I didn't know you could shoot a gun underwater...

8:16 PM
the bullet does not travel very far

I saw on mythbusters that if you shoot a bullet into water, almost every single type of bullet shatters on going into the water, except for a .22 I think (if I remember correctly)

I wish blender's fluid sim could do that..

yeah, that'd be SO cool...MORE PHYSICS FOR BLENDER!
:D
That's one of the reasons I was hoping maybe Paul Nylander could offer some help with his great insights into coding physics...
http://www.bugman123.com/FluidMotion/index.html

I tried to do an animation with a bullet going through a glass full of water once, but there were no bubbles :(

8:19 PM
@ThomBlairIII sprites :)
@ThomBlairIII Yes

bummer...I know...when I first started using 3D back in 1997, objects didn't even have an inside...like, if you tried to fly the camera into a cube with a hole cut into it, it wouldn't work...
I think the same is true with physics in Blender & all 3D
gotta wait a few more decades

@ThomBlairIII Even with a solidify modifier?

the 3D program I was using "Extreme3D" didn't have solidify modifiers
you could just make simple objects and animate them moving, basically

oh

@ThomBlairIII That is doulbe sided shading, which we have now

8:24 PM
hmm, never heard of it

you know how normals only point in one direction?

what does it do, put the texture on the inside & outside of an object?
@Vader yeah

@ThomBlairIII Pretty much

you could not see the face unless the polygon was facing the camera

Otherwise it would be rendered with Backface culling, which makes faces with the normals facing away from the camera invisible.

8:25 PM
oh, I was wondering what backface culling was
is there anyway to make a face have normals on both sides?
seems like that would be really useful
I mean, other than a solidifier modifier

It's kind of what double sided shading does

But IMO solidify is more useful, as if you can see the back of a face it pretty much grantees you are using non-manifold geometry somewhere

it depends, a cube does not need to be solid

8:29 PM
?? why not?

@Vader It already is solid

@gandalf3 whoa, what's with the topology?

If you solidify a sold cube, you get a hollow cube

@gandalf3 what's that...it looks like the mesh the glock forum poster posted

@ThomBlairIII I think that's what the OP was saying happens to them when using mean crease

8:30 PM
oh, I couldn't figure out what op was trying to accomplish

If I understand correctly, I think they want something like that but without the pinching.

well, can't they set the mean crease to less than 1.0?

mean crease is bad

BAD MEAN CREASE! Go sit in the corner!
>:(

@ThomBlairIII It still pinches
And it's not very sharp

8:32 PM
@vader ok, what's bad with mean crease?
I'm totally new to mean crease
@gandalf3 hmm....

mean creases do not export

You can always apply the subsurf modifier
Actually.. are there any formats where modifiers are even exported at all?

which will add more geo
@gandalf3 no, each modifier is unique in every app

Then..
@Vader So mean-creases probably work differently in other programs too?

correct

8:38 PM
I see

@Vader Oh, I see, you mean you want to export the obj with a modifier attached to it and a mean crease, but without applying the modifier?

@ThomBlairIII no, @gandalf3 was wondering if modifiers can be exported, which they can't

I wouldn't think they could...I'd assume they were blender specific formats....
it'd be awesome if all the world & software could come up with universal formats for everything

well other apps do not have modifiers
there is no array modifer in maya

oo.oOO.ooOO

8:43 PM
where would you ever use a mean crease other than on a subsurface modifier?

I think it's subsurf specific

@gandalf3 take a few minutes and step away from the keyboard...if you ever get THAT many googly eyes, you gotta take a few minutes of rest or your eyes might stick that way FOREVER!

only for the subsurf

@Vader oh, ok
hey guys, how do I get my screencast keys to always stay next to my world axes when I close my tools panel?

Q: How do I get my screencast keys to stay by my world axes when I open & close my Tools panel?

Thom Blair IIIHow do I get my screencast keys to stay by my world axes when I open & close my Tools panel?

@ThomBlairIII Idk.. Maybe modify the addon so that when T is pressed it offsets a certain amount? (there would be other issues, like determining how large teh tool shelf is etc.)

8:55 PM
I don't think there is a real need for that

hmm...I have no idea how to modify any code
:(
@Vader but then the screencast keys stay out in the middle of the screen when doing a tutorial

It might actually be worse to have it jumping around though

@gandalf3 yeah, but the thing is if they stay with the world axes, then they are always in the correct spot, no matter if I change the size of the tools panel or not.

Q: How do I get my screencast keys to stay by my world axes when I open & close my Tools panel?

Thom Blair IIIHow do I get my screencast keys to stay by my world axes when I open & close my Tools panel? I don't want them to stay out in the middle of the screen when I close my Tools if I'm doing a screencast.

hm
I'm 99% certain there is no way to do this natively.

8:59 PM
bummer...

You could use region overlap to make the panel almost completely transparent or something

I've tried that...then it becomes much harder I think to read the text on the panel
...at least I think...

Q: why does loop-cut-and-slide ignore some faces but not others?

ZCoderwhy does the loop-cut-and-slide operation ignore certain faces but happily cut others?the model is symmetrical so it is a bit strange to pick 3 faces that won't get cut. I tried applying it to see if it was just a graphics glitch causing the purple line to not display over everything, but it did ...

Q: Why does my Properties panel cover my whole active 3D Viewport when I press P?

Thom Blair IIIWhy does my Properties panel cover my whole active 3D Viewport when I press P? It never used to do this, it always toggled my Properties panel open and closed, as it should. But just starting today, when I press P, it covers my whole active viewport, but it doesn't even show any of the properties...

10:34 PM
@vader just for laughs, fyi, I also just sent this to the developers as a BUG!
(bugs in my brain, more like it...)
XP

lol
I wonder what they will think

I already apologized... hopefully they'll get a laugh out of it...
:P
brighten up their day...
my brain has slandered me, my rep has been abused!
#brainfartrelatedegoinjury

ohgod buzzfeed

you like them?

no

10:41 PM
I like their comedy skits
NO?!?!

it's cheap humor

why not? were you abused by buzzfeed when you were a kid?
it is, but sometimes my standards for humor have to be lowered in circumstances of dire need

it's just so predicable

do you have a favorite humor source? I'd love anything good....

seinfeld, a tv show

10:43 PM
@Vader oh, you liked seinfeld? I guess our senses of humor are slightly different...it was good for me, but not my all time favorite.
I will definitely grant you that seinfeld is leagues above buzzfeed
buzzfeed is more for like one-liners almost
but some are good
do you like monty python?
I didn't like most of their stuff, but I did like Life of Brian and The Holy Grail
also, some of their audio skits were good

never saw it

it's definitely the kind of humor you might not like...it's a very distinct kind that probably would have to be an acquired taste for most people -- very blunt and weird, but I like that sometimes
@Vader "LIfe of Brian" was one movie and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" was another...it's almost theater of the absurd

10:59 PM
@vader what are some of your other favorite things? like what kinds of music do you like? also, do you fit any sociological culture, like goth, religious, Nascar, or sports fan, etc?
@charles hey charles!
@vader Tattoo afficianado?

3d fan

that's cool...any others?

I like 80s/70s
@ThomBlairIII huh?
@ThomBlairIII soccer

oh, did you play? I was the goalie for my high school team all throughout my highschool

@ThomBlairIII soccer

11:01 PM
which position did you play, or do you like to watch professional?

I don't play much anymore
I mostly watch it

me either
@vader have you seen this guy?

yeah I have

who is he?
totally amazing!
how about this guy?

he also makes funny youtube videos that are not socccer related
