12:00 AM
I still want to hole for the seat

oh, btw, have you by any chance tried any fluid simulations with 2.7?

I have

I see...makes sense once I visualized what the hole was going to be for and the orientation
@gandalf3 have they worked for you?

It seems to work a little better than it did in 2.69..
One did, and one didn't.

hmm...for some reason when I bake a domain and then try to alter the fluid object's size, the domain won't bake any more, even if I delete it and make a new one...

12:03 AM
@ThomBlairIII What happens when you press bake?

it says it's baking, but the domain & the fluid don't turn into liquid mesh like they should...I can't figure out if I'm doing something wrong or if it's an intermittent bug

Is the domain display set to geometry?

@gandalf3 when I press bake the progress bar says it's baking but the fluid doesn't turn into liquid mesh
I'll check about geometry...

BTW, is there a way to remove hair particles in particle edit mode?
I haven't used particle edit mode much..

I've never tried to edit particles
as for geometry, I can't find where to set it to that

12:06 AM
I think you can cut hair

oh, ok, I'll check

@ThomBlairIII Make sure it's not set to geometry..

oh, no, it never is, it's always set to either preview or final

@Vader Does it actually remove particles though? I thought it just shrank them..

12:08 AM
¯_(ツ)_/¯
I have never done hair

XD
that's a cool emoticon!

@gandalf3 just go for the bald look

lol
I've done hair much either
(part of the reason why I'm doing it now..)
@ThomBlairIII Do you think you could upload your .blend?

I could, but right now it's actually doing it properly, so I'm not sure if that would help...do you still want to see it?
Idk why it's doing it properly now after 15 failed attempts
plus quitting blender
etc

Hm

12:11 AM
indeed!

Well, if it's working I doubt I'll be able to find what's wrong :P

yeah, that's what I was thinking....NEVER try to fix an intermittent problem when it's not doing it!!
I learned that doing hardware repair

lol

@gandalf3 can I use a weight map or a vertex group as a hair source

Yes
@Vader BTW, You know how I said I thought a question about "what is manifold" would be OT? I've changed my mind (I don't know what I was thinking at the time), because while it's not specific to blender, it has everything to do with using blender to model stuff (especially for 3D printing).

12:14 AM
so, should I ask?

Plus we already have many questions like it ("what is AO?", etc.)

actually, I was just watching a video describing what defines a manifold on youtube

@Vader Go for it

yeah, thank you guys for putting up with my questions!
:)
you helped a lot!

Thank you too (we want questions!) :)

12:18 AM
check out this video on manifold definition
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrqxp89ilM4

wifi 2 slow 4 utube

oh, want me to download it and send it to you or just summarize it for you?
I'll get a screen shot
want me to download it for you? it's really easy

it's fine, I will watch it tomorrow

but thanks

12:23 AM
no problem...it explaihned a lot for me

why is there a None brush in particle edit mode??????????

@Vader I was just wondering that.. I think it's because you can individually place hairs without using a brush.

also, this was very good for explaining how to find and repair non-manifold things
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thyGOePjCxE
I also had great success using 2.7's new 3D printing tools for finding and repairing all my non manifold areas, so I can give some tips if you want

Q: What is non-manifold geometry?

VaderI am not quite sure what non-manifold geometry is. I thought non-manifold geometry was just floating vertices and hole in a mesh. From my experience this is not always the case however. What is non-manifold geometry and what are the types of it and how do I avoid it? Is there a case where it is a...

@ThomBlairIII Cool :) If you want you could summarize and link these and put it up as an answer ;)

12:30 AM
I wish the walk mode had head bobbing

spam Q and E while walking? :P
Or jump..
Why is jump V!?!?!?
I would have thought it would be space.

that's teleport
I might put in a feature request

@gandalf3 yeah, I'm going to try it now
:)

@Vader Yes. Why is space teleport? I thought practically every game had space as jump.. (Maybe I'm wrong though)

Space shoudl be jump, I guess the devs don't play games

Q: Using difference modifier on two objects doesn't always work

SwimBikeRunI want to use the difference boolean modifier to stamp in shapes on this lime. However it does not work for some of the characters. Only some of the radicals (pieces) are cut out. The picture shows one such example: the lower right J shaped piece is missing. Is this the best way to approach this...

Q: Looping walk cycle animation snaps back on repeat

drentI have what seems to be a fairly common problem (From what I've seen while searching) that I can't quite seem to solve. I'm trying to make a character walk down a street. This is the first proper walking animation I've attempted in Blender (Did a couple in 3DS Max and Maya years ago). I've create...

@gandalf3 Is this a dupe?

Q: How to run a python script at regular intervals?

gandalf3Is it possible to run a script every few seconds or so, while letting the interface update in the meantime? How can I do this?

@gandalf3 oops, I might be in over my head a bit. there are more types of non-manifold geometry than are easy to describe. Thanks for answering that one. :)

1:33 AM
@iKlsR I don't think so, but they are very close. I want to run a script at regular intervals (with or without freezing the UI), and the other question wants to run a script continuously without freezing the UI.
@ThomBlairIII Feel free to add your answer too if you want, I thought I would answer it partly because I learn as much (if not more) answering than asking :)

yeah, thanks...I'm going to add one scenario I found that was REALLY bothering me because it can't be fixed by removing doubles.
@gandalf3 there, I added a bit about overlapping edges. that had me SO confused for a LONG time until I watched that second video on youtube about repairing nonmanifolds.

Q: adjust the camera view actually separate all my objects

ollydbg23I would like to adjust the camera view, so I press the ctrl+alt+0 to switch to the camera view window, then I try to adjust the camera window. Then, I press the G key, and try to move the view window up or down, but finally, I see that all the objects was moved, not the camera view itself, see ...

I just edited my answer, adding a bit I just discovered that's new to 2.70 about the 3D Printing tools. It helped me a lot today when I was repairing my super non-manifold mesh.
:)
I'm trying to be like gandalf and make nice, well formatted answers. Gandalf is definitely the wizard at making awesome answers!

Q: How to flip the face of a closed 2D curve (similar to normal flip for mesh)?

Pedro GimenoI use Blender 2.69. When I create a closed curve (for example, a circle) and make it 2D with the properties editor, it becomes filled. Since I work with backface culling off (because of the application of the objects I make), only one of the sides is visible. In the case of a just created circle...

Q: River simulation - different approaches than fluid simulation?

invicenteI am in the middle of a project wich needs to have a river flowing in it. So as you can see, what i need to accomplish is: 1) someth...

Q: Blender isn't importing mtl correctly with obj?

KatamaritacoI'm a new blender user, but have used other modelling programs before. I've downloaded a model file (http://www.models-resource.com/nintendo_64/pokmonsnap/model/4949/) and unzipped it. When I import the obj into blender, it is my understanding (from here: How to import a .mtl file?) that the ...

Q: Real depth of field in blender, without post processing

jozxyqkLast time I checked, blender could only render depth of field effects in a post process pass, using the "Defocus Node", which seemed to get it quite wrong. Is there now a way to include rays across a lens during tracing and produce a more realistic depth of field?

11:39 AM
How do you reset the origin point to the middle of a object in blender 2.70?

11:59 AM
Shift + Ctrl + Alt + C
@ThomBlairIII I like your answer, it's quite extensive
But I am not sure about the intersecting faces one.
I can have two closed cubes, one in another and it would be considered manifold

Does anyone else really like the new tabs in .70

12:18 PM
they are alright

Q: How do you draw a circle onto another object?

Qwertie ϟComing from SketchUp one of the tools I miss most is the circle draw tool which lets you draw a circle on any face and then you could extrude it in/out. The only tool that I know of that comes close to this is the knife tool but this would be very impractical to cut out with the knife Example: ...

@Vader they could look a bit better but they seem very functional

THey are better than that one long list for sure

I would like to be able to reorder them though

12:37 PM
that would be nice

They should copy chrome's tabs

@Vader Hey! I think the intersecting faces you might be having are where you have two cubes, each it's own separate object, intersecting each other. Since each cube is it's own separate object, the "check for non manifold" tools will only check individual objects for manifoldness, so each cube is considered a manifold. But, if you were to take the two cubes and join them like CTRL J into one object, then you'd find I think that the intersecting faces are now considered nonmanifold:

Q: How do I export my scene with the propper nodes to a Collada file from my cycles render

user2863How do I export my scene with the propper nodes to a Collada file from my cycles render I am working on a spaceshipe but when i try to export it to a collada file the texteres are missing, I am using the cycles render and the textures are no images.

1:52 PM
@ThomBlairIII in your screenshot, they are not considered as nonmanifold

2:17 PM
@Vader Huh! You're right! I didn't realize that. Then I don't know what the answer is...
Maybe intersecting faces are not considered nonmanifold
this plane, though, is...
? :|
I think it may be due to this rule the guys talks about in the Maya manifolds video I mentioned last night, the rule about the T shaped nonmanifold where 3 planes only share a single edge

but I don't really know

@ThomBlairIII if you move the plane out of the cube it is still considered non-manifold
it is a 2d plane, it does not have any voluem

huh, you're right...maybe intersecting faces don't cause an object to be nonmanifold???

2:32 PM
correct
you should fix that in your answer

yeah...I'm just about to do that...
what's the easiest way to navigate to your question?

idk

:P
@vader I like your animated gifs...I'm going to have to find some app to make them

I use camtasia

yeah, but remember I'm on a mac & it doesn't have that feature...

2:42 PM
yeah, maybe write a support ticket

I don't think that'll work cause mac people have been complaining to Camtasia about lacking this feature for years and they still haven't implemented it
:(

@ThomBlairIII inverted normals are also no considered non-manifold

@Vader :O ... you're right again! I guess that's only in Maya...I got that from the Maya tutorial and didn't check it in blender...thanks...
AND NEITHER ARE ZERO LENGTH FACES OR EDGES!
ARG!!!
XP
@Vader thanks for checking....peer review weeds out my mistakes!

np

I guess Maya is very different from blender in terms of nonmanifolds or maybe I'm just confused. Anyway, the overlapping edges was the one that I was REALLY glad to figure out how to fix yesterday.

3:07 PM
@gandalf I was thinking that if we're wanting this site to be the Go-To site for Blender answers, then my earlier question about 2.7 switching from ortho to perspective might be one that many people would like to know the answer to, so I posted it if you want to answer it.
@gandalf @vader do you think that's appropriate?

Q: Why does Blender 2.70 not stay in Orthographic view when rotating from, say, Front Ortho view?

Thom Blair IIII've just upgraded to 2.70 and now when I'm in Front Ortho view (or Back Ortho, Right Ortho, etc) and rotate out of it into User view, it switches out of Orthographic mode into Perspective. Blender 2.69 didn't do this? Why is it happening now in 2.70?

@vader for your answer on the ortho view question, should you add "then click Save USer Preferences"?
or is that too obvious?
@Vader is that in the game engine?

no, its the new fly mode

oh, interesting...I never use fly mode

Shift + F, Tab

btw, I got an animated gif making program, works great!

I wish you could look straight up/down in fly mode

ah hah! thanks!
#bonuspointtovader
actually, how do you indent the image, just put a space before it?

Yep

yeah, I just got it to work
thanks guys!

Q: Text allignment changed!

Thomas RobertsI am a fairly confident blender user, who has been using the software for about 1.5 years. I have recently updated from version 2.6.3 to version 2.7, but I have noticed that in version 2.7 the text allignment has changed. It probably changed in an earlier version but is there any way to change it...

I think I found a decent one too. @ThomBlairIII

A decent what?

8:09 PM
gif maker?

ohh
I need one of those..

I got GIFBrewery

Any linux ones?

it's only $5 on the apple store

LICEcap
quick test

8:11 PM
@gandalf I haven't seen any but I didn't look...I usually look on download.cnet.com for software

@ThomBlairIII crappy site

you don't like it? why?

filled with bloatware

what's a better one?

dunno.. I used to browse filehippo.com back in the day

I just yaourt -Ss things :P
And google

how big of a gif is that one you just uploaded iklsr?

@ThomBlairIII abt 1mb

this is one I made, but only set to 10 fps

I set the framerate really high so that's why

wow, that's nice resolution & size.
& speed

8:14 PM
640 * 480 @ 33 fps
Oh wow, filehippo got a makeover
Haven't been there in eons
I think I need to write a meta post on voting
nobody is voting anymore on new questions

on this site or on filehippo?

lulz. wat

who needs to be voting and on what?

this site
if you browse the new questions page, there are a lot of 1 vote questions

what do we vote on?
oh, I see

8:17 PM
As a member of the community, it's your duty to vote conservatively and often.
Voting is at the core of any SE site, it's how we separate crap from decent stuff and reward people for excellent answers.

do conservatively and often contradict each other?

If you see a question by a new user and it's ok, bump it.

^^ yeah
and if it's shit let them know
I don't like to downvote new users unless is $pam

Oh, what do you guys think about a tag or something?

ok ,sounds good

8:21 PM
I am seeing a bunch of new questions asking about previous stuff in older versions
etc..
dunno

@iklsr OMG!!! LICECap leaves GIFBrew in the DUST!!! I can't believe it! I made a 33fps 10 sec gif with GIFBrew and it was 28MB...I did the same thing with LICECap and it was only 2.7MB!!!
huh, anybody know why I would get a failed upload of a gif several times?
wow, my file I made with licecap won't upload, but I can upload the one iklsr made no prob...?
well, maybe it's just finiky today...

@ThomBlairIII max size is 2mb I think?

OH! That must be it...
so I can't upload reruns of Seinfeld?
:(

not to SE at least

I upload to pasteall

@gandalf3 Nah, I don't think version tags would be useful esp so late now. What I mean is a tag for deprecated features etc.
