Q: Why Shri Krishna did karma when He spoke against it in 2.21?

LokeshIn BG 2.21, Shri Krishna says वेदाविनाशिनं नित्यं य एनमजमव्ययम्। कथं स पुरुषः पार्थ कं घातयति हन्ति कम्।।2.21।। English translation O Partha, he who knows this One as indestructible, eternal, birthless and undecaying, how and whom does that person kill, or whom does he cause to be ...

There's never a word called "should" in this aspect but the word not necessary is more suited. Also while path of Jnana Yoga he explained, Krishna emphasised on Karma Yoga which is suited to all kinds of humans. And therefore he emphasised on Karma to Arjuna. A Jnani Yogi doesn't necessarily have any duties but if he does so, it's not wrong either because he does actions selflessly which won't bind him to Samsara
Also Krishna never spoke against Karma ... He has always insisted in doing one's Karmas without attachment personally to results!
@ChinmaySarupria You are right, but according to Adi Shankara karma is enjoined only for ignorant. He says in His Bhashyam: "From the statement that action is impossible for man of realization it is understood that the conclusion of the Lord is that, actions enjoined by the scriptures are prescribed for the unenlightened."
@AkshayS Shankaracharya argues, yes its true Karma Yoga is insisted but it is only for Karma Yogies. See 3.3 where Lord says "The Blessed Lord said O unblemished one, two kinds of steadfastness in this world were spoken of by Me in the days of yore-through the Yoga of Knowledge for the men of realization; through the Yoga of Action for the yogis."
There is an example @Lokesh which Krishna gave about a king where the king did his duties even after God realization. So while talking particular path of Jnana Yoga = duty outside to world is "not necessary" ... Note the word its not necessary....."Should" has different meaning
@Ambi I think the conclusion by Sri Shankaracharya is fine because Sri Krishna Himself says, how can that person who has realized Atman to imperishable, immutable and unborn perform action. Therefore karma is impossible for Jnani.
@Lokesh, we cant say its impossible. Even if Jnani has realized, its his wish to do Karma or not then! One who has realized Atman can perform selfless actions too!
15:10
@AkshayS No Atman cannot perform action. This is the literal meaning of this verse.
@Lokesh Atman doesnt perform but as long as he is in body, he can either perform or not
@Lokesh You have not understood meanings properly because if you understood, you wouldnt find contradictions
@AkshayS You are going against the very meaning of this verse. Atman doesn't reside in body but everything is pervaded by Atman.
@Lokesh Go through my words again....
@AkshayS You haven't gone through the verse I think. Lord is saying one who has realized Atman CAN NOT perform actions, let alone selfless actions.
@Lokesh I know..... the verse... and its meaning... but what you are saying and your understanding is not complete......One who has realized Atman through Jnana or any path is called Kaivalyarthi.... Kaivalyarthi has no duties to fullfill but they can engage in duties according to their will... You are not able to understand these two sides of same coin...
I know one who is on Jnana path need not do any ritualsitic actions nor duties but he is renuonced aspirant who is constantly engaged in Atma Vichara and Atma realization. Having realized Atman, depending on which stage he realized, how much complete realization he has.//// What you say is after Atma Gyan, yes most will quit the body and merge with that infinite, but there are cases where you can retain the body out of compassion..

This explanation I am giving for the only word you used "should".... Should abandon Karma = This sentence in your question itself is not correct!
