How to make this a single instruction? I wonder :D
d1 = ( *(r_packet.data) );
d1 = (d1 << 8 ) | ( *(r_packet.data + 1) );
d1 = (d1 << 8 ) | ( *(r_packet.data + 2) );
wish we had instruction like foo <<8|= baz; :D

1:13 AM
I'm not sure you should make that a single instruction.

Anyone who really understands FP here?
I'm creating my GameController type.
I'm not sure whether it should be immutable or whether it should allow state changes.
It is really a singleton per game instance, so I'm leaning toward allowing state changes.
It needs to store the current board and current player.

does it though?
why do you have to encapsulate state into an object?

How else would I store it?
It is basically going to represent a game instance, the way the board represents the board.
After I get move memory done, it will need to store that too.
Or whatever you call it when it remembers game move history.

So, here's the dirty secret of FP no one likes talking about. Sooner or later you need to actually store some state or interact with a user.

@RubberDuck I know.

FP?

1:31 AM
Would a Tuple not work? I don't get how a Singleton would be better here...

@Mehrad functional programming.

@Peilonrayz No. I need it to be easily expandable.
On the other hand, I could have all the state storage be in the caller.
After all, this is a library.
Every time the game state changed, it could return a new controller.
So, my C# could deal with the constantly changing variable.
Yeah, that's what I'll do.

@RubberDuck thnx

We could help you fix problems with non-working code if you showed it (and named the algorithm you're using, preferably with a reference to the algorithm) if that's what you mean by "it is fail[ing] until now" — if you mean you haven't found an alternative, that's slightly different. You could get help at Code Review to improve your working code. Does anyone know a good source of how to setup dual-boot on a PC with Windows 10 already installed? (I want to add Ubuntu); Yes there is Google, but there are so many sources that I don't see which ones I have to use anymore

@skiwi Maybe AskUbuntu could help you with this ?

I should Google it... But really I trust the SE network more

@skiwi 1. Disable fast boot in Windows, 2. Install Ubuntu. Well that's what I done...

Can you enable fast-boot afterwards again?
I wouldn't mind if it automatically started into Windows every time

You disable fast boot so that you can write to any ntfs partition you have
If you don't want to do that then you don't need to change fast boot

3:15 PM
you're asking for global code reviewing on something that does not answer a given problem statement, and as code example you're giving a full snippet. This is out of scope for stackoverflow, as it makes an answer hard to write, and your question too broad. As an advice follow the given constraints and set ulimit to 512MB. — zmo 36 secs ago

@Peilonrayz Hm ok, thanks will check it out
Seems like dual-boot isn't without concessions then
Can't I just build two PC's in one case, put a switch on the PC and pretend I have dual-boot :D

I actually done that on my first Arch install, but the switch was me swapping the SATA cables, ;P

The thing is that I want to use Linux so I can use GPU acceleration in neural network frameworks as the majority is written to run under Linux, but I'll practically only be running them when I'm not behind my PC
Or I need to re-implement it using a Windows-based framework, but for that I would actually need to understand the specific form of neural network I want to use

3:27 PM
If you want you can remove your Windows disk, install Ubuntu, spam 'next', on a single disk, reconnect your Windows, boot Ubuntu and run sudo grub-probe -t fs_uuid /boot/grubso that you can boot windows from Grub...

Of course you could argue it is always useful to know what you are doing...
@Peilonrayz Sounds a bit advanced to me :p
Hmmm, the issue is mostly that you want to share a disk between Windows and Linux, right? What if you use exclusive partitions, then the OS shouldn't see the other one?

@skiwi The issue is mostly that you don't want to delete one OS whilst installing the other. This looks like an alright explanation on how to format your drives.

@interjay thx, i fix that, but i am looking always to keep on the question and solve the current problem, i mean that's not code Reviewing — Ari Gold 51 secs ago

Q: Twilio Real-time SMS with JQuery and PHP

Matthew D AuldI'm currently working on a real-time SMS System but I'm fairly positive that my current implementation is a terrible practice and I'm looking for guidance to be more efficient with this. The Attempt Currently, when you load up the interface it pulls all the text messages for that number you hav...

Q: Regex - correct way to find all words without a certain character

AidenhjjTo find all words without the letter 'e'; I have: /\b([^e ]+)\b/ There must be a better way using Regex to find all words that don't contain a certain character. Here is an example: toMatch = /\b([^e ]+)\b/; testArr = ["platypus", "elvis", "javascript", "stackoverflow"]; for (str in test...

Q: A routing heuristic: improving function speed

Richard_phI am currently constructing a heuristic to solve a routing problem. Routes are represented by vector<int> of customer ID's, which are stored in the class Solution (which also contains other relevant information). The class Instance contains instance-specific information, i.e. distances between cu...

I think I just discovered a bug in Roslyn.

Hmm... alternatively to dual-booting I suppose I can al so run Ubuntu from an USB stick? Only need to change boot order in BIOS from that and check if it actually works

Monking!
@skiwi Yes, use a live stick.
Works just fine, just not as performant for obvious reasons.

OK, not a bug.
String interpolation can't use ternaries unless they are parenthesized.
But, in the expression:
var currentPlayer = $"{value.Player.IsWhite ? nameof(Player.White) : nameof(Player.Black)}'s turn!";

Right on the ':' token, no less...

@Hosch250 Syntax errors have a nag of suggesting gibberish when they don't understand what you're trying to do.

C#'s are usually very good.
They said it is probably because the ':' token is used in date literals too.

Duh.

My checkers app fully implements two-player mode.
Time to get the UI done better.

@Mast Probably doesn't matter a lot if there's barely any disk access, or does it?

@skiwi Meh, most of the OS should fit in your RAM, but I don't know a flying thing about OS.
I've built things that could be considered OS, but those had nothing to do with USB.

Ah right the OS itself also matters

Monking @AaronHall

backatcha. :)

What about a live SSD if it would be possible? Likely connected... somehow? via USB rather than SATA or PCI-E though

@skiwi @Mast From what I have seen, the OS itself (with Ubuntu) tends to load mostly to RAM, but programmes don't do so from a USB stick usually.

6:25 PM
Right now it's running inside a VM on my normal HDD
So gotta find the fastest USB stick in the house, probably a 32 GB one, hope it's enough for the time being

it's 20:30 and I'm still at work. I'm seriously thinking to buy a comfortable bed and more coffee

Not thinking about going home? ^^

It's that day of the month when I have to assist someone else how he's deploying an app I'll be working on + he's defragmenting some stuff
and they call me a software engineer. Good joke

Fun

today I was taking part of a presentation of this new software which we already have (it just has another name and it's done by some other people), but they think this new one is cooler because it has that awesome feature nobody's ever going to use

6:37 PM
That doesn't sound too much fun

wrong

@Mast Are there any risks associated with it? I don't really need it to see my hard drive for example, would be a shame if it started formatting them or something like that

@Dex'ter but at least it ticks another box in the feature list, right? :P

Q: C++ Dirent.h "Wrapper"

AreuzI do not want to call this a wrapper, but no other name comes to mind right now, so I'll use it incorrectly for the rest of the question - It's just a class that adds C++ functions to dirent.h but it's very specific to my use case. All of the code works well, but I've never worked with the diren...

@DanLyons I guess.... I'd rather have that box labeled: "Develop this" instead of: "Join this meeting where we'll talk about something useless"

6:50 PM
ahh meetings... where the minutes are kept, but the hours are lost

Exactly

@skiwi Depends on your settings, but you could un-mount your HDD if it automatically mounted it to be sure.

> "I have updated my answer and rolled back the rollback to make the rolled rollback valid after making the answer previously invalidated by rolled back answer valid after the rolled back rollback. :)" - Wow, I'm rolled back

@Mast Hmm okay, out of curiosity, what would a sudo rm -r / do if the Windows disks are mounted?

@skiwi nothing good

6:54 PM
@skiwi probs nuke everything anyways
if you're lucky it tries to delete /proc before any of your mounts
unlikely, though, soo ...

It's a risk when running apt-get though?

@skiwi apt-get is just a CLI package manager

Yeah but doesn't installing run arbitrary code from their respective installers?

@skiwi Sounds like you need to hop on the Unix / Linux SE and ask the experts. :)

Hmm well all I care about it is that my disks don't get randomly destroyed when running the Ubuntu USB :P

6:59 PM
@skiwi Removes everything, including what's in your /media/<username>, which is where your HDD is likely mounted.
Except you didn't -f, so I'm not sure whether it will succeed.
rm -rf / is worse.

@Mast Just add the -f for the sake of it :)

No preserve root is even worse of-course, but only for the Nix side and since that's on USB throwaway anyway, it doesn't matter.

@Mast -f option will do it without permission

Just unmount the disk and don't accidentally sudo anything.
Problem solved.

^^ Okay thanks
Huh, it's new year already? Fireworks are going on outside since 8pm (few minutes ago) already

7:06 PM
@skiwi Same here. I guess they're local retailers with permission. A show to showcase what they got this year.

@skiwi They probably managed to install some Microsoft thing

I don't think I can handle this roller coaster love/hate relationship I'm developing with Node.

@RubberDuck That bad, huh?

Yeah. That bad.
And I'm a VB6 developer.

I'm a simple Software Engineer. Will code for food.

Anyone in here node?
@DanPantry around?

@RubberDuck I tried. I failed.

I got it, but when I introduced promises, I broke my tests.
Even though the code works....
(Which says something about the tests I wrote....)

I think @Phrancis has experience with Node.

7:19 PM
ReallY? @Phrancis, I thought you were a SQL guy! Have I been gone that long?

Like a lot of us, he does a bit of everything.

IIRC anyway.

I'd like to do a bit of everything, but ... how ?I'm only a simple human

Q: C# Rate Limiter

Tom GullenA flexible, fast and lightweight rate limiter that allows rate limiting of any action on a website. Doesn't work across a scaled deployment by design, but could easily be modified to work in this way if required. By design chose to keep it to this model. Example usage If an IP address request...

@RubberDuck @JeroenVannevel Uses node.

I’ve finally learned what upward compatible means. It means we get to keep all our old mistakes.

7:44 PM
@Dex'ter I'm sadly out of stars

@Dex'ter I thought that was "backward compatible".
Backward compatible: New version features old mistakes.
Forward compatible: Upgrades automatically and breaks your working code.

@RubberDuck He is a SQL guy but he put a lot of times to learn JS and other programming languages (I'm not that up to date either)
