I was voting before it was cool
5
5233 up and 589 down
and those are fairly evenly distributed between questions and answers
I was voting to become cool... I voted for everything and anything to get the damn badge and I run out of votes too
Kaz
Kaz
Voting is a real problem. I feel like I barely vote at all, and yet I'm in the top 30 for the year.
I haven't voted much, and that's only because I don't have time.
18:05
I don't vote a whole ton either. I should try be more active again.
Kaz
Kaz
The bar to get onto the front page of voters is less than 2 per day.
just a wild hypothesis; is there a correlation between killing the "out of ammo" meme and the decrease in voting?
2
@Kaz the better news is that there's now a second page
Probably.
I actually vote for every question I open and usually for most answers I stumble upon, mhmm
I think the Nth Monitor is the biggest problem.
Nobody wants to be shoved into another room whenever they get slightly off-topic.
And that's exactly what happens.
I can understand the ban on certain topics, but not everything off-topic needs to go there.
18:11
The NTh Monitor is an okay concept and works if you're in both rooms, however if you're just in The 2nd it is pretty annoying
And it always just ends up being two people discussing something because nobody else sees it and provides input.
the Nth was created around the historical peak of 2nd Monitor activity
did you noticed that too? there aren't (m)any good reviewers under the javascript tag
@t3chb0t Well, there was kjonijn, or whatever.
lol
konijn
veteran zombie killer
18:13
in comparison to c#, the js area is really poor
That's because JS is a poor language.
C# is a nice one, so it is unsurprising the winners use it.
Is something wrong?
that is because no one wants to tag JS with the other 80 library tags...they would rather use the library tags instead of the JavaScript tag
@Malachi Well, SE only supports 5 tags anyway...
Well, if you guys are interested, I'll be more active next semester.
I'll be posting a lot of F# and a few C# questions for my checkers game.
18:16
@Hosch250 FWIW I fixed the source control panel disposal. still crashes on exit.
Maybe I'll find time to answer a few questions too.
but keep PascalCasing in mind :P
@t3chb0t Huh?
I know my C# standards.
@Hosch250 I can take a look at those F# questions.
Kaz
Kaz
18:17
I don't think I've even opened an IDE in nearly a fortnight. Makes me sad.
not even the VBE?
what do you use F# for anyway? it's just for sport, isn't it? it doesn't have any usage at all
@Hosch250 sorry I forgot my <sarcasm> tags
Maybe I'll be able to lure someone else in here too that I worked with on a checkers game another time.
@t3chb0t lol don't tell Mark Seemann :)
Kaz
Kaz
18:18
@Mat'sMug Only if you count the Data-Mining macro that's been running for 7 days straight.
And, if the room doesn't pick up activity, I can make this my war room, although I guess I won't have Duga post commits here.
@t3chb0t type providers are gifts from the gods :D
@t3chb0t F# has lots of usage.
The best way for this room to pick up in activity is to discuss a lack of activity :P
5
it helps when @skiwi can find which tab we're in
4
18:20
@t3chb0t All sorts of things.
@skiwi lol
If I get 24 more C# answers tossed off, I get a silver C# badge.
Odds are I get to 16k too.
that reminds me, I'm 36 answers and 144 votes short of a VBA gold badge
@Kaz ^
@Hosch250 I need 38 answers, and 74 votes.
I need 69 votes.
Apparently our skills are pretty similar.
I can google for why use F# myself but to make it short, what was your coolest app in F# that you couldn't imagine in C#?
18:22
@t3chb0t None really.
and "only" 90x days @200+ short of [badge:legendary]
It is a different way of thinking.
Either language can do anything the other can do.
@t3chb0t Reverse Polish Notation calculator.
I could make one in C#, but it would probably be massive compared to the F# version.
@t3chb0t It's not that you can't imagine it in C#, it's that you can make it differently in F#. There are many things in F# that are much shorter/simpler than the C# variant.
And in F#, you can name your test methods actual sentences.
18:23
Such as composing two lists together.
@EthanBierlein it's sport, it doesn't have any use :)
units of measure are neat, too
@t3chb0t Tell me that after you see my checkers game.
It is actually very useful for working with immutable types.
@Hosch250 I'd just ignore him at this point, intentional jabbing/provoking.
@t3chb0t Yeah, it's mostly sport. There are a few F# programmers on Twitter I follow who say that they've built small business applications in it, though.
18:25
possible answer invalidation by Ben on question by Ben: codereview.stackexchange.com/posts/145529/revisions
I don't mean to use F# only because you can make it differently in F# but rather it would be difficult or extremely error prone to do the same thing in C#, I don't know, a web service, a windows service, a POS application, a search algorithm for seats in an airplane, something useful, something monked in a normal working day
I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it belongs on Code Review. — Nico Schertler 44 secs ago
@t3chb0t F# vs C# for exact same programme.
Let's just say F# is focused on FP rather than OOP. So, think of any other functional language, and F# is better because it can be integrated with anything .NET.
@Mat'sMug You're the 8th tab on my list of pinned tabs
18:29
I don't recall ever having 8 opened tabs
I need to pull up that Too Many Staff Meetings code and work on it some more, I need to ask some more questions as well
@Mat'sMug I usually have more than 8 but I don't recall only having 8 opened
@t3chb0t my team use an F# project to utilize SQL type providers as an ORM into a legacy project's database. It was not done in an ORM to start with, so using nHibernate or EF would have required significant effort. With the type provider, though, we run sqlmetal.exe to generate the dbml file from an existing database, and the type provider automagically provides EF objects for its tables/procedures.
3
I usually have more than one kind of browser open...
I like middle-button-clicking on tabs to close them
@Mat'sMug I can't decide which tab to test that on right now....
18:30
@Malachi I guess you can have Chrome to see how your website looks, and IE to see how your website breaks
@Malachi works in VS and SSMS too
@Mat'sMug test with IE, SharePoint and TFS in Edge, Everything else in Chrome
Bah, FF is better than Chrome any day of the week. It even works better when it is drunk.
but as a company they have been talking about moving to an official support of Chrome
(Not that I've ever seen FF drunk...)
@Hosch250 I can never get my Computer to work after I pour Beer on it
18:32
@DanLyons this is what I meant, on a daily basis not to write a game for sport :) was it easier to use F# or why did you pick it?
@Mat'sMug I didn't know you can have less then 20 tabs open
isn't the big difference between F# and C# that one is functional?
@Malachi Do you have German origins or something? All those capitals remind me of the German language.
Yeah, F# is functional.
I think they are like Freudian slips with Capitals to emphasize certain words when I type them out...
18:33
nouns
C#, on the other hand, is getting more functional features.
@Mat'sMug Yup, "work" is a verb there.
@Malachi You forgot to capitalize "words".
I can never get my computer to Work when I have been pouring beer on myself
that would be the other meaning of work...lol
not all nouns are capitalized.
@Malachi That is a PIBCAC, or whatever.

@Mat'sMug never heard that one

Well, that doesn't work for laptops. The keyboard is between me and the actual "computer".

brb updating Java
2
19:13
funny how one never needs to update .net
That was pretty painless
LOL.
To be fair, a lot more things run on the Java SRE than do on .NET :P
made sure unchecked that Yahoo! toolbar checkbox?
Those comments had me giggling over here.
19:15
@Mat'sMug They removed that some time ago, and it was Ask! not Yahoo =)
Borodin is carrying on about Essex Boy, and he's kind of egging them on.
@Phrancis IKR, it reminds you every two weeks every time you update Java!
LOL
#BrainWashed
@Phrancis Are you sure?
I can get by without Java.
There isn't a whole lot that needs Java installed anymore, actually.
Java is the new Adobe
19:17
A few annoying plugins on websites that I'm more than happy to block, and a few video games.
@Mat'sMug should I tell you why? Because it's intertwined with the OS and the .NET updates come with the windows updates
44
Q: Do 3 billion devices run Java?

Alfredo OsorioI was installing Java today and this was shown in the installation. Is there anything that supports this claim?

@Vogel612 IIRC, you won't get those if you uncheck the box about other MS products being installed through that.
Would've been an interesting world if Java was paired with Windows as well
well then you'll have to get the updates yourself, too ...
19:18
PlayStation 4 runs on Java :)
I don't have a PS.
And I don't have an Android.
Living the Java-free life
But, I can easily believe that Java has 3 billion downloads since my Learn OneNote app had over 1k...
@Hosch250 But your Webcam might use Java. /s
I don't have a webcam.
Unless you mean the camera on my computer.
It might be, but I thought you usually wrote drivers in C?
I'd hope it isn't written in Java :P
Me too.
19:23
@Phrancis good thing I don't have a PS4.
@Vogel612 not sure about that one. at least until .net 4.5, the only time you needed to update the .net framework was when you installed an application that was targeted at a newer version. e.g. you have 2.0 and install an app that runs on 3.5. I'll have to check win update logs, but I'm pretty sure .net itself doesn't update on a whim like Java does
java doesn't update "on a whim" ...
@arda It's pretty great, actually; very few problems
I'm not a fan of consoles.
Turns out the main problem with PS4 is Sony, not the PS4
19:24
Depends what your definition of a "whim" is.
the version numbering is quite clear which updates are strongly recommended. +20 is a security relevant update, +5 is a recommended update, +1 is a minor update
So, if the version number is +1, it is a whim?
and the steps reset each time ..
@Hosch250 those usually don't even get pushed to the updater IIUC
> A new version of Java is available! Quick! Install it now and break that old legacy app!
on that note: Linux can update java just fine
and since Java is intended to be backwards compat, that legacy app should only break if it's programmers have been naughty
19:26
Nothing like a good old holy war to liven up this room ;-)
meh ..
@Vogel612 very, very naughty
I could very quickly expand the holy war.
Comparing political parties to programming languages, anyone? ;)
and end with a holy crap
19:27
nope
I don't think Java's pulled off a "Python 3" since Java 2, IIRC
C# did it once or twice before with a very minor thing, IIRC, and are considering doing it big-time by making reference types non-nullable.
don't get me started on version numbers...
@Hosch250 how would you even? you guys only have two measly political parties that both are basically impossible to trust with the fate of your nation ..
And if your app is still using Java 1, you should seriously consider a new career path
19:28
@Hosch250 that would be the dumbest thing they could possibly do
@Mat'sMug Or the smartest.
@Phrancis Java 5 I think is still a somewhat realistic candidate
I've heard it can be good to cut losses...
@Hosch250 after they already introduced the null-unwrapping operator that change would be rather stupid
@skiwi not since the effort to kill 1024-bit ciphers
Well, last I heard, it won't happen in C# 7.
They delayed almost half the new features to either 7.1 or 8, or something.
19:30
@Vogel612 What's that?
I'll stick to C# 6 for a while
I always forget that version numbers don't go 7, 7.5, 8, like a number rule.
@Mat'sMug I certainly had the hardest time getting you to that.
browsers broke almost all java 5 and lower business apps, because java 5 doesn't support the ciphersuites with enough keylength
I'll to right on to C# 7 when it comes out.
Hmmm okay, who uses Java for browser these days anyway?
2
19:31
@Hosch250 RD will be getting on board by 3.0 too
Yeah, now that Gerrit is gone.
@skiwi mozilla started displaying warnings when you got to a https page with a key that had less than 1024 bits
@Hosch250 oh, with or without
@skiwi and all those legacy apps that are running in a browser do ..
@skiwi been a while since I've seen a Java applet running in a browser, I think it's mostly on server side now
19:32
Java Applets are basically impossible to run now.
@Vogel612 yep. and that break if you update Java
NPAPI has been removed from all browsers
JavaScript does a far better job in the browser than do Java and Flash anyways
@Mat'sMug actually the breakage can usually be fixed in at worst a few hours...
@Phrancis I can't help but wonder why flash is still so widely in use though ...
Me too
19:33
twitter, news-sites, spotify and the list goes on and on ...
@Vogel612 that's assuming we have the source code for that 30yo business-critical piece of crap
ok maybe not 30yo
My employer's official speed test page uses Flash, about half of the time I end up pointing them to speedof.me because either they're on mobile, on a Mac, or they're too smart (or too dumb) to install Flash
if you don't have the source code, your management should be given a spanking

we've seen self-accepted selfies that are basically a code dump of the revised code that builds on all other answers. some reviewers might consider it rude.
Yeah, it seems like it could be considered gaming
self-answers are great for generating content in a small tag.
@ThomasWard Should've made it asynchronous, making it synchronous was a terrible idea

I like how we've grown to downvote bad but on-topic questions.
I'm curious: why do you think a question like codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/145221/… seems very popular ? Did it get posted somewhere?

maaartinusWhen doing a CR, it's important to be able to quickly find methods/classes/whatever in the source. T...

^^ this ... is the meta question I talked about ..
took a moment to find it, but the gist is:
CR is a rather rare site in this regard and the software that's running these sites is intended to run across the whole SE network
Dev time will rather be spent on something beneficial for all of these sites instead of just one .
that's why there is no "built-in" way to do this.
But there is a userscript in the answer by janos
@Malachi yep same I always have the chat room pinned in chrome
cool, yeah that's exactly what I was wondering about. that's understandable
22:25
You know, it wouldn't be at all hard to support git-cloning.
It wouldn't work on all questions, simply because some people post multiple files in a single block.
@Hosch250 how would you name the files?
However, if someone prefaced the code block with --- <file name="file.txt" /> ---, it would be incredibly easy.
That wouldn't even show up in the question.
that requires additional effort from posters. and some of them don't even understand how to format the code as code. ...
Exactly.
it's basically a utopia
22:27
But, if even a few started doing it and we had a pinned meta post about it...
I'd agree there, but if anyone wants to, they are more than welcome.
the problem is that askers seem to not be that much of repeat customers :/
I'm willing to start formatting my posts like that if someone does it.
@Vogel612 Well, that solves all the problems.
If you ask enough questions, you are bound to start providing answers sometime.
Maybe there could be a button that initiates adding a file that starts that off for you
no you're actually not :/
That will help fix the low answer level, and some of them will find their way here and increase the activity in the chat rooms.
22:30
@jsuth but that would have to be in a userscript again. Don't misunderstand it's a good idea, but it won't work in 90% of the cases
@Vogel612 Well, that's how I started.
@Hosch250 sure, but that doesn't mean everybody will follow your footsteps
Why not? They are so big you just can't miss them.
