I smell a troll. I've left what I consider a reasonable comment. But I expect, if they respond, it's going to derail very quickly.
If your customer base is mostly governments you are not being exposed to market forces. This leads to unsustainable business models. Also, you are burglar as you are funded by tax dollars. — Erik 15 mins ago
@Zak that last sentence seems very... irrelevant
Just don't respond and everything is solved

I don't see an issue with this technique, although this is probably more suited for code review, however, I personally would not bother reusing the connection object. You don't gain anything from this, and it could cause you issues, simply use your configuration for a static connection string, and create a new SqlConnection object within the method. In addition, you can simplify the code very slightly by using command.Parameters.AddRange(parameters); instead of am explicit foreach loop. — GarethD 36 secs ago

@CommitStrip And still, sometimes that's just how you have to do it. Life ain't fair and it ain't pretty all the time either.
@Mast Seriously, a real fix would take less time than that.
@Hosch250 Not if you automatically generate the days. Besides, if it's that badly written, it's likely there's a bug somewhere your clients have worked around and rewriting it could break their fixes. If you're talking really, really old code, don't rewrite it unless you're sure nothing else will break (and you can't be sure).
Hey, that's what I set up here! ...the calendar is always 5 years ahead, an overnight process ensures it stays thay way...
@CommitStrip <3 legacy code and the different types of people you run across who maintain it
19:03
@CommitStrip Did one of these for work this morning.
This is why I hope to work on a new product, not some legacy code.
Hah
Funny
I work on a new product that is legacy code.
I never understood why its a bad thing. Legacy means it works and it has continued usage. Why make something new and shiny that has tons of bugs and whatever else.
Legacy means it has had bugs so long you have to support the bugs' bugs as features.
Legacy just means it's old. Often it means there's a lack of documentation and nobody dares touching the core of the functions.
19:06
And it is probably poorly written, or was written back in the 80's without all the fancy features that make working with code easy, making working with these fancy features extremely difficult.
You were allowed your own coding style back then, try that now in a decent company...
I have "legacy" code that is brand new on one of these projects for work.
Lunch time. BBL.
Because we have to support older browsers with it, so it's considered legacy.
@Brandin that is like washing an old car... it won't help, but for now it "feels" better :D
19:09
Welcome @DirkReichel
@DirkReichel Depends on the scenario.
If you keep the undercarraige of your car washed it will take significantly longer to rust.
So, washing an old car does have significant benefits in some situations.
@DirkReichel No the analogy is not right. If anything old software is like an old book. The cover may be dusty but the information therein either is useful or it isn't. It doesn't "break" with time. Maybe the old book will use some funny old-timey words, which makes the youngins nervous. Get over it.
If your job is in Sales and you need to go to your clients location every once in a while, a washed car has advantages.
Afar from that, I'm an engineer.
If it ain't broken, don't fix it.
19:11
I fix it even if it isn't broke.
There's no progress to be made if we don't strive to improve that which is already working.
I'm currently training my JavaScript. Everything is broken the moment I write it.
@EBrown normally i fix it "till" it's broken... then call other ppl to fix it again :D
"Legacy" code is not bad, however, one must ask himself or herself: "can this be better?" Nothing may be wrong with it now, but if it can be improved then it's worth doing so.
If we all adopted the "legacy is fine" mentality, there would be no progress made.
No, you don't need to adopt a "legacy " vs new stuff mentality. Have both. For stuff that needs to be correct and reliable, I'd prefer a trusted product in maintenance release / bug fix cycle. The new stuff with extra features added every week is not appropriate for that case. However, if I'm looking for something new then give me the new goodies.

@Hosch250 Thank you for reintroducing me to thecodelesscode!
@joranvar I've read them all.
I need more code to post. Perhaps I'll write the improved version of wabbit theathon in JS and see what happens.
I've read some of them, a year ago. Then I must have forgotten about the site.
Which of these should I implement next? github.com/rubberduck-vba/Rubberduck/…
I think this question should be moved to codereview site, as it provides a full working code and asks for reviewing. — Alexei 11 secs ago

@Hosch250 #178
@Mast Why?
That one actually has less priority than some of the others, I think.
I think Mat wants Inline Method, but I'm not sure whether to write another refactoring or one of the inspections.
@Hosch250 Because it has been open for almost a year.
I'm actually leaning toward #874.
But #210 or #363 could work as well.

Q: Finding max depth of nested parentheses

#874 and #178 are assigned to the same milestone by the way.
With 700 difference in issue numbers.
They are all assigned to 2.0 except one.
#874 will be trickier, I think.
I'd say go for the oldest one, otherwise you'll never get rid of it.
Yes I will.
I just closed a bunch of really old ones inside a couple days.
But, I'm wasting time picking...
@Hosch250 go for Extract Interface :)
@Mat'sMug You're the boss.
19:36
that'll give you the code for #118 :)
Have you seen how long the Refactoring menu is getting?
quick question guys, When calling getBufferStrategy we retrieve an instance of the Buffer Strategy, but what does it actually holds? Does it hold only one instance to the current buffered image we going to work on?
Which getBufferStrategy?
@Hosch250 on Java
OK, I don't know Java.
19:43
hehe, me neither
Is @DanPantry still around or is he finally getting some sleep?
@Mat'sMug a precedent has been set for me. I never thought "ghost reads" from uncommitted transactions would be an actual problem in any real-life situation. I have been proven wrong.
@Phrancis Of course you were wrong!
It wouldn't be such an issue if it wasn't real, and multithreading is a serious issue.
We actually had a whole chapter on transaction issues, including that, in our class.
@Phrancis Sorry, didn't mean to imply that you are always wrong. Multithreading and issues like that are very real and very common.
D:
I got a hat
19:55
Which one?
"Flip Flop"
> this is a secret hat
Well, thanks for all that information, SE.
Oh. You can get that for voting.
It is valid on the Solstice for sure, not sure if it will last much longer.
You'd better quick get it on all the sites you want it on.
I don't want it at all.
I don't really care about hats.
@EBrown says the guy with a blue hat
it's blue with a black stripe, right?
19:58
@Mat'sMug I don't have a blue hat.
No.
White.
White with a gold stripe.
I see it blue with a black stripe (kidding)
It is inspired by the blue/black white/gold dress.
There are two colors.
I know, that was the joke..
I don't really need hats, though.
(Unless it's the McLaren F1 team hat, then I want it.)
19:59
I saw the literal color of the picture as blue, I didn't bother trying to guess what the real dress color was.
