Q: Making my thread safe

MartinLoaneli,ve written a thread to be used to handle some commands its working fine but is my thread is safe ? could i make it better ? type TClientThread = class(TThread) private Command: string; protected procedure Execute; override; end; { TClientThread } procedure TClientThread.Exe...

Is it a good idea to have a base abstract class with one overridable method, just so that you can implement subclasses with different behaviors for that overridable method?

@rolfl I have not received mine yet.

is there a Meta post for the Swag yet? I don't imagine it has been 6-8 weeks yet, has it?

no meta post for swag, no
but you should have recieved that email from tim post
and that's from Sept. 18th

I got an email and I filled out the Google form.
I haven't even received an email with shipping information... I'm assuming that would come before my stuff got here...

3:24 PM
I don't know how ... whoever ships the swag handles that stuff...
but that sounds reasonable...
and neither did I

I haven't seen an email with the shipping information yet. but the last time I got swag I don't think I got one of those

oh

Visual Studio 2015 Community doesn't come with MVC Framework?

arghhh....
how do I get a logical AND with only NANDs
nvm...
AND == ! NAND....

You can't even do automated functional testing in VS Community

eeek.

Q: Towards designing thread safe class

QuserI would like to design a thread safe class Parameters. This is internal and only my other classes in DLL will be able to use it. Here it is: static class Parameters { private static int x1; // only getters of x1 and x2 will be visible to outside world private static int x2; private stat...

You have to get the version that's like $2k or $3k or something for that.
At which point... if you're a developer, any argument about Apple being more expensive just disappeared.

so I should be working with 2012 web Express?

@nhgrif stop
I don't want to hear more shit about how Apple is better than MS
I don't want an argument to break out

right...

3:32 PM
Microsoft partially funds Apple, right?

@EthanBierlein you're doing your best to do exactly that...
so can we pretty pleasy stop starting flamewars?
on both sides?

Okay, then I'll just talk about Visual Studio.

okay

Because VS is the only product I know of that costs anywhere near that much to do automated testing.
That price isn't attached to any other IDE or platform that I know of. Certainly not Rails, Android, or iOS.
looks like you could buy "Visual Studio Test Professional" for $900 and get it.

3:35 PM
you can do proper automated testing with a build server through appveyor

Can I run those tests locally on my own machine?

you got NUnit for that, right?
or am I missing something?

I don't know. It's not my problem. I'm not developing a Windows application.
It is a problem I am aware of.
It's not really a problem because the client is paying for Visual Studio.

@Vogel612 You know the laws of De Morgan?

But it's a problem that you have with Visual Studio that some other IDEs have built in. Apparently, mentioning how one IDE is better than another is called "starting a flame war", so I won't mention one in particular that I know about... but nonetheless... it seems absurd to me.

3:42 PM
There is no such thing as 'better'. There is however such a thing as 'more tailored to our needs'.
6

@nhgrif wtf really?

Having automated testing behind such an immensely high pay-wall is tailored to no one's needs.

if worst comes to worst you could try using msbuild directly perhaps
but then you dont haev a test runner so that doesnt solve your problem

Whose needs is that tailored to?

@nhgrif to be clear, i agree with you, and tis the main reason why I don't want to work with C# anymore. I don't like being tethered to a bulky-ass IDE to be able to do anything, especially when that IDE costs a crap tonne
I mean you could monodevelop, but then you're using monodevelop.

3:45 PM
@Mast ya (A AND B) == (A NAND B) NAND (A NAND B)
I got that far.

@Vogel612 And if it gets more complex than that, use a Karnaugh to optimize.

now that's new...

The only reason I can see to use VS is because you are doing a .NET app and there is no other option.

also it's not part of the assignment...

@nhgrif but, unfortunately, enterprises love microsoft due to the reliability and as much as i hate VS you can't really disagree - microsoft is incredibly reliable in terms of backwards compatibility and supports enterprises. Plus, *NIX sys admins are quite a bit more expensive, whereas Windows sys admins are a dime a dozen

3:46 PM
and A and B are already negated ... which makes this thing a lot to write...

@Vogel612 It's probably part of the next ^^

And granted, that covers a fair bit of use-cases... But nonetheless, be aware of the shortfalls of your tools and do what you can to sharpen those tools or get better tools.

@DanPantry don't even try... it's painful

> but then you're using monodevelop

I had my share of WTFs when using monodevelop with mono on RD...
they advised me to "take a look at our roslyn branch" .... wow

3:48 PM
I am sure that Mono will get better in the near future when ASP.NET goes Open Source

@Vogel612 Same here. In the end, I just dropped C# altogether. Looking at Java/Grails now.

You'll not like it

I want to like Gradle but the DSL seems awkward

no matter what you say, Java is simply not as nice as C# with the standard cases of development

besides, for any web-based stuff.. javascript ftw

3:49 PM
@DanPantry and the docs are ... at least confusing
@DanPantry where the docs aren't less confusing and the language has more wtfs than any other I have yet seen

@Vogel612 nodejs docs are pretty clear, and the only wtfs ive seen are == vs === (and this) but lets not get into that

Who reads the manual anyway?

@Mast eh, i read the node docs a lot
node standard libs are actually pretty useful, they have a lot of the things you'd want in developing any kind of IO-based app

Node has quite decent documentation. At least the basic stuff has.

the Problem I have with JS is the wtf wrt. undefined and the intermingled DOM and Standard stuff.
and no node.js is not js
it's node

3:53 PM
nodejs is js.

also most of the ecosystem I've seen of JS is just bullcrap

javascript is just a language. the wtfs the language hasi s undefined.
the DOM is defined by W3C and is just a standard that browser vendors follow

hmm... sorry but I need to get going...
let's continue this later today :)

sure :)
