A: Small text-based RPG (v2)

Ethan BierleinRather than (again) recreating the fight_enemy function to run a different function each time, you can add an additional argument to the end of the function signature, function_to_run. You fight_enemy function would then become this: def fight_enemy(enemy_name, min_enemy_damage, max_enemy_damage...

@Mat'sMug How generous are we talking?

Hey folks, seeking advice from the regulars. My question has a small bounty, which is about to expire. There's only one answer. That answer (though correct in its statements, it seems) hasn't received any upvote at all, and it was only marginally useful to me since it was only about a very small part of my question. What should I do with the bounty? Award the full amount anyways? Upvote the answer and let the system award half the bounty after the expiration? Take no action at all?

@IsmaelMiguel Yes. That is, the app is simplified code. The tests (the bit I'm trying to get feedback about) is actual code, changed only to be runnable against the example app. (I see now that according to meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/a/5165/10034 I shouldn't have mentioned parts are simplified, will reword my question accordingly in a sec.)

@IsmaelMiguel Sounds like train day.
Makes me feel like a project manager.
@CaptainObvious burn burn burn
Calculating more time for things I'm certain they won't need more time to minimize the risk of problems if the trains get delayed again.
When you say "train", you mean "train" like transportation, "train" like practice or something else?
Transportation.
VS says I have an outgoing commit but the sync button is greyed out.
I forgot for a moment that you lived in the Netherlands...
So haha, you're so screwed!
09:55
And I was stupid enough to forget MS never solves anyones problems.
@Mast Haha, good luck :D
@skiwi Yea, first train I stepped in decided to go the other way instead because the rail was blocked.
Wow, nice
What blocked it?
A dead person.
It's summer? Train tracks melt down. It's autumn? Leaves block the tracks. It's winter? The switch freezes. It's spring? Trains are still late even though there's no problems, because screw you!
09:56
Suicide or murder?
@IsmaelMiguel Around here? Probably suicide.
This ain't the USA.
Happens what, around 40 times a year?
Here, when a train kills someone, it generally is an accident
@Mast They have that in Japan also, where the trains are accurate within a few minutes
In Japan, the family or relatives of the jumper get sued
Because it makes everyone late, or something like that
09:58
@IsmaelMiguel You're not supposed to come close to a railway when a train is coming (which is heavily signalled). So if you get grabbed by a train, you're either stupid, suicidal or somehow got stuck (highly unlikely).
@Quill If they would try that here, there will be an investigation by such parties to delay the proceedings with at least 12 years.
At least, that's what you do if you don't want a building next to your house...
@Mast all of the alliteration is belong to you
@Mast A deaf guy was killed because he couldn't hear the train coming. He took a dangerous shortcut that required to cross the line. He picked the wrong time (day) and the wrong spot (where you can't see the train coming)
@IsmaelMiguel We got blinky lights for that on most crossings.
Well, lights on all crossings and beams with extra lights on most.
It wasn't a crossing
It was a wall that you could climb
Just a wall
@IsmaelMiguel And how does that not fall into the 'stupid' category?
10:01
Hmm, if I want to generate images based on input conditions, meaning different elements need to resize relative to the amount of elements to be placed inside, is it best to use SVG or a PHP image library?
@Quill I'd go with SVG.
@Mast It falls into the "bad luck" and the "knew no better"
I'm kinda wondering how you'd make your browser display *.php as image
@Quill SVG. Way easier on your server
@Vogel612 easily, actually. See here
10:02
@Vogel612 As long as you use header('Content-type: <mimetype>'), you are set
@Vogel612 Probably by framing the image in a PHP page.
If an answer is basically stating the same as a previous answer (at least 2 months old), should I flag it? Not CR-specific.

@Mast meh, it's a simple demo, and using that/those function/s doesn't require image input anyway
@CaptainObvious Lack of context
Internet in the train, so broken...
Well, they probably went cheap on the internet
@CaptainObvious So, he built a stack. Good for you. Keep re-inventing the wheel like that and you never get shit done.
@Mast Does it deserve
10:13
@Quill no. it's working on CLI
@Quill If Java has no Stack class/function/whatever, no. But it probably does have. A vector perhaps?
@Mast there's Vector, Stack and Queue
at the very least, that is
@Vogel612 Thanks for the clarification
This is re-inventing the wheel, but making it square instead of round.
4
@Mast no.. If it were reinventing the wheel it'd expose collection-like API
10:16
@Mast Square wheels somewhat work
I wonder what interview questions (somewhat) related to would actually be decent?
meh. you just have to add "sufficient context"
@skiwi I'd agree with @IsmaelMiguel on that one, but I can understand why they do it anyway.
then again you could just copy-pasta from grepcode....
10:19
I'd grab the code for the average challenge from Rosetta, they got most stupid questions in most (stupid and not so stupid) languages.
@Mast And why would it be?
@IsmaelMiguel To see if you can find a solution for a small problem on the spot.
To defend your style.
To see the process of how one works.
Not that it has any bearing on the real world, but hey, managers must feel good sometimes as well.

What was the current decision about editing a question when closed?
I've never had to write any code at an interview...
Did you @skiwi ?
@IsmaelMiguel depends... If it has no hope of reopening, then it's moot
@Mast Nope, have had two interviews so far, but they weren't for full-time positions
@Vogel612 Thanks
I get some questions about hardware and how to tackle problems, but never an actual code question.
Yea, about what languages I have experience in, but that's basically expanding on my resume.
10:48
My interview was 85% code
Both my interviews were mainly about what projects they were offering and if they would fit
Where those big projects?
Depends
On?
(I don't want details)
@IsmaelMiguel Okay, it depends on stuff
10:55
I don't think I asked it properly:
What defined a big project for you? Within that, those 2 projects you had an interview for fit in that group?
@skiwi That's definitely adhering to the 'no details' part of the question ^^

They're trying to realise how something works, but they has source of it? If they didn't know how it worked, they wouldn't have a source. Meaning, they pulled the code from somewhere and is asking for clarification
Anyway, I'll ask them and find out
@Quill Source code?
English isn't everyone's native language. I think you're being way too harsh here on grammatical pedantics.
@Mast Might be this, looks very similar
@Quill Not identical.
He may have used part of it.
It's kind of hard to write original code, I recently expanded on that.
Everything has been done already.
It's exactly the same in places
It's re-arranged and somewhat cropped
Then it's his.

@Quill So is the start and end of every main function in ALL my C++ code.
So?
If you can find something identical to his code minus a line or so, we can talk. Afar from that, it's his.
And even one line can make a helluvalot of a difference.

Hunter StevensRight now, when someone creates a new question on SO, they see the "How to Ask" box with the following: Is your question about programming? We prefer questions that can be answered, not just discussed. Provide details. Share your research. Often with "newer" users, I see questions...

A: C++ alternative to exceptions

nhgrifI'm not familiar enough with C++ to know their standards, or what the elders consider to be the best way of dealing with errors are (and C++ is definitely a language of elders), but I can give you some insight on what another equally old object-oriented language does to handle errors (and it's no...

@Quill no, somewhere in another place — gstackoverflow 8 mins ago
@Quill I used this code as basis but it is my code. — gstackoverflow 6 mins ago
Quill... he already stated what he wanted in his question.
That does not explain why "Second Time" is not reached, you are just giving OP code review advise, which is not the question — musefan 48 secs ago
And there's actually a pretty significant difference with these three instance variables
    ReadWriteLock readWriteLock = new ReentrantReadWriteLock();
    Lock readLock = readWriteLock.readLock();
    Lock writeLock = readWriteLock.writeLock();

This might be a good fit for code review SE — Gary 54 secs ago
What's the difference between private transient Entry volatile table[] and non-volatile?
@Gary Code Review explicitly expects code that works as intended. This does not qualify under that criteria. — nhgrif 21 secs ago
@Duga No CR profile
Removing the MATLAB tag as your post has nothing to do with MATLAB. Also, you should probably put this on Code Review instead. This kind of question is off-topic for StackOverflow: codereview.stackexchange.comrayryeng 38 secs ago

@nhgrif a lmgtfy.com link would've been more smartass
I'm not trying to be smart ass really.
If I knew what is, I'd just tell you
If it were Objective-C, and it said atomic or non-atomic, I might be able to help you (volatile seems related)
@Quill That tends to only be appropriate when it's a common issue. Far fewer people have issues with Java's volatile keyword than with Java break statements in switch blocks, I would assume.
I don't really think it's ever appropriate. Although, it's a little annoying that you've estimated that question to be someone else's code and you don't even understand one of the Java keywords that actually make up part of the difference between the OP's code and the code you found.
