Wow. You know how 'round these parts, people run out of up/down votes? Apparently, on Programmers, they run out of Close Votes.
Really? Didn't think they got that many questions in general.
I wonder how to resign from the MS Wiki author forums.
in The Whiteboard, 2 mins ago, by Ixrec
"You have no more close votes today; come back in 31 seconds." let me close you already!
I can't manage it anymore - I can't be a buffer for anti-MS haters telling me I don't know what I'm doing.
00:02
huh
Like, yeah, I test everything at least once before I post it, and I provide a ton of screenshots showing how to do it...
By the time the article is written, I've usually reset the process and taken screenshots through it about 5 times, being careful to reuse names so the screenshots all match, and so forth.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT

@nhgrif Me, or who?
@Hosch250 maybe it's time for a new project?
@RubberDuck I just want to get off the Wiki at MS's site.
But yes, I would love to do a new project.
Well, what are you passionate about?
I used to be passionate about OneNote/Office, and I still love it.
What software do you need that you can't get some place else?
00:08
However, I can't be a help-support guy any more.
Now, what software do I need? I can't think of any!
That's the problem.
You don't have a problem.
We're at our best when we have a problem to solve. Find one. =;)-
I have one right now - deleting the references to future updates to Learn OneNote from my blog/twitter.
I don't know, what can I write that hasn't already been written better?
Photo/video editing software, a productivity suite, and operating system - it's all been done!
@EthanBierlein I need a new project.
What are you thinking of?
00:17
I think I'll do checkers.
I'm really good at checkers, I should be able to develop an AI algorithm pretty good.
Cool.
I am having issues. Why is list.remove('') returning None?
Never mind, moving on...
@rolfl Python
Heh, lol
00:20
> list.remove(x)
> Remove the first item from the list whose value is x. It is an error if there is no such item.
It does not return anything, ever.
it throws exception if '' is not in the list
God. I'm such an idiot.
That ^^^ ;-)
@RubberDuck Don't you mean to say that his problem is that RubberDuck isn't good enough and that he should see what contributions he could make?
@nhgrif I could do that.
But, I'm somewhat crippled there because I've never even written anything meaningful in the VBE.
So, I don't know a bug when I see one :(
VBA?
I don't understand what "I don't know a bug when I see one" has anything to do with knowing the language.
I've worked with, at least 7 or 8 QA testers, none of them knew any programming at all, and all of them found at least one bug.
00:26
I mean, I might write a bug and advertise it as a feature.
I could do something as bad as saying that all "Dim"s should become "var"s (for a wild example).
Are you saying you can't learn VBA?
No, I can do that.
But, I don't know how to use it.
I suppose I could learn that too.
OK, here goes!
You have Excel, right?
Yes.
I know how to use an equation, and use Excel as-is.
I bet you could use VBA to write some code that automatically fills out an Excel spreadsheets with stats scraped for some sport
00:29
I don't like sports, but I see what you mean, now.
MLB season just started. I bet you can use VBA to scrape MLB.com stats on players and fill out an Excel spreadsheet in some way (as a good start)
My brother would love me.
Well, @Hosch250 has already contributed more than most to the project @nhgrif. So, although we definitely need all the help we can get, I really was just pointing out that his problem is he has no problem.
The core of programming, IMHO, is that there must be a problem to solve. A task to automate.
Otherwise, the desire to work on it is fleeting at best.
Still trying to learn the usefulness of recursive functions.
I could write an accounting system - I just took two comprehensive classes on accounting.
00:32
Rubberduck is my problem to solve. Not his.
When you're ready, the problem will present itself.
@Hosch250 Good luck.
@EthanBierlein Why?
I could write a calculator, but I have a couple calculators installed - Windows desktop and Windows Universal calculator both came auto-installed, and Excel is probably one of the biggest calculators written.
Lol. Truth there.
I could write battleship, but that wouldn't really stretch my skills.
Are you so sure about that?
2
00:35
No, I guess not.
I'm not sure about anything write now...
@nhgrif I want to learn functional programming.
It's a pretty interesting problem IMO. And if you don't think so, try it in a language you don't know at all.
Try it in F#. Do it functional. See what you learn.
Anyway, I've gotta go. See ya guys.
See you.

Q: Segregate Even And Odd Numbers in given array

david Given an array A[], write a function that segregates even and odd numbers. The functions should put all even numbers first, and then odd numbers. Example: Input = {12, 34, 45, 9, 8, 90, 3} Output = {12, 34, 8, 90, 45, 9, 3} Input = {6, 4, 6, 8, 1, 1, 1} Output = {6, 4, 6, 8, 1, ...

"use strict";
let hello = new Date("hello");
console.log(hello);
// returns the String: "Invalid date"
That^ is pretty weird IMO, but I guess it is to be expected in JS...
I would expect an error of some kind, not just setting it to a predefined String if it can't parse the input as a date...

UGH ECLIPSE WTF
@Phrancis What is wrong with it?
HTTP Preview is being stupid (or I am, more likely)
I'm getting one of 3 different results, apparently based on complete randomness, AFAICT
That seems annoying. I don't know much about that, so I can't really help xD
I get that error most of the time. And very rarely it actually works. And some other times, it works but it loads the original version of the file I started with an hour ago, instead of the currently saved one...
It's sorta like how visual studio didn't include classes in the global namespace. Annoying stupid problems like that.
02:20
Computers are superbly stupid. I'm not that smart either. So it's difficult.
Meh. Stop the server. Clean. Clean again. Start it up. Run the code. Appears to work. Make visible change for testing. Refresh HTTP Preview. Also works.
DON'T TOUCH IT.
Now I just need to fix the code ;D

Brain freeze moment, say I have some function doSomethingIf(fn) and fn is a function that returns true or false. What would I call fn?

Not feeling it tonight. Besides Eclipse servers being a PITA, my wife is also watching American Dad, and the latest BBC Comedy of the Week podcast is not funny.
Hey, I'm watching American Dad too!
Sorry if there are American Dad fans here... but that show is not funny.

02:43
@Phrancis Ohh, I'm not saying it's funny, I just have it on to have "noise" in the background.
Ah good :)
I usually have a documentary on or something like that when I'm not here at night.
I think it's trying way too hard to feel like Family Guy, yet the jokes pretty much all fall flat.
I'm pretty sure McFarlane isn't even one of the creators anymore. I think it's on TBS now. Yuck.
Not sure. I'm certain McFarlane has made more than enough dough to retire at this point, although I think he could have just moved on to something new
He was the producer of the new Cosmos series last year, was he not?

@Phrancis Ah.
@Hosch250 Have fun!
You too, @EthanBierlein
I twitch so badly whenever someone pronounces SQL, "S-Q-L" instead of "see-quill".
31% and applying settings.
So that is how you pronounce it?
03:13
I pronounce it "see-quill", just like most other people.
Better than "Squ mumble"
I use to do S-Q-L.
I've considered "squill".
Rebooting again, 75% done.
Wait, you actually pronounce it by name? I just call it "the query language".
@EthanBierlein @Hosch250 Every DBA I've known just says it like "sequel"
03:24
@Phrancis Ah yes.
That's sorta what I meant.
Alright, I'm done with Eclipse for tonight. I shall just go back to editing the stupid file in Notepad and refreshing my web browser. You'd think something like this would be so simple.
Windows 10 says hello.
Hello, World Windows 10!
@Hosch250 What is it like?
Screenshot?
Sure.
What do you want, the desktop? The Start menu/screen?
Word?
(From the Windows Store.)
Edge?
03:34
Edge?
Using it right now.
Bah, jinxed :p
@Hosch250 Desktop. And tile view, if it's still there.
I'm curious about Start menu as well, personally
Tile view? You mean the menu?
It is resizable :)
Hmm, Imgur paste from clipboard isn't working.
Better fire up IE.
03:36
Ooh, does it have the new "spartan" browser?
Have they got rid of Snipping Tool?
That is Edge.
@Phrancis No, of course not.
Phew. Most useful app on Windows IMO ;)
Pasting is just quicker, though, when you have a print screen key on the keyboard.
What's wrong with CTRL + P?
03:38
I wish Macs had a printscrn button
Do what, send it to the printer?
That is Edge.
⌘ + Shift + 3 to save a screenshot to desktop, then you have to browse to it. :|
You can drag from the jump list into Start/taskbar.
I don't like jump lists, except for newly installed apps.
Menu-style.
That looks cool. I like that background too.
That is from a theme I installed.
Let's see if I can't find the official background on the web for you.
03:43
It's a pretty background. :)
Very reminiscent of Arizona...
Very nice. My background is a little (lot) more comedic. hehe
@EthanBierlein The theme is called Canada.

Windows 10 looks pretty sleek
It is now, it was terrible a couple months ago.
The Windows Explorer icons are still the ugly new ones, though.
That is the installed desktop.

Not bad at all, all things considered. Internet Explorer Edge looks like a browser that was designed within the last decade
The new snap.
Just drag into a corner.
I like that a lot!
There is OneNote too.
Did they improve Outlook too?
03:52
Outlook was split up into Mail, Calendar, and People.
And these are the brand new Windows Store apps.
Ah, the Apple way eh
Post screenshots of Office 2016 preview if you hold on.
Oh, instead of the tiles sliding to update, has a box turn animation.
How I feel whenever I come in here.
Anyways, see y'all later.
I'm off to sleep.
@EthanBierlein That's slightly morbid. Later
See you.
03:58
@EthanBierlein LOL ain't that the truth

@chillworld I did a few edits on your post, mostly to improve formatting; hope you like them :)
If you want someone to review your code you should ask on Code ReviewHobo Sapiens 9 secs ago
@Duga The formatting on that is exceedingly broken
This may be OK on Code Review, although improvements to the title and correct formatting on the question would be desired. If the code works as intended and you are looking for improvements, you're welcome to post there. — Phrancis 57 secs ago

A: Why is the @ symbol escaped in this Perl regular expression?

SeanArrays are interpolated into both double-quoted strings and regexes in Perl, with the special variable $" (by default a space character) going between each element: my @array = ('a', 'b', 'c'); print "@array"; # prints "a b c" print "a b c" =~ /@array/; # prints "1" I rarely use this feature...

Looks like it's a Perl thing
Not sure why the OP is trying to escape array notation 10 times in a row though.

@SimonAndréForsberg I wasn't saying that -> is an invalid/unrecognized syntax in C++. I was saying that Xcode at least seems to think that it was being used invalidly in that code.
@LightnessRacesinOrbit While you are correct, it is a request for a Code Review, requesting a code review doesn't automatically make a question on-topic or a good fit for code review. So while you're correct, this question, as written, is a bad fit for Stack Overflow because it doesn't specify what the problem is (or that there even is a problem to be solved), where you're wrong is in thinking this question is a good fit for Code Review and should be migrated. This question's migration was rejected because the code won't even compile (it has compile-time errors). That's off-topic for CR. — nhgrif 59 secs ago
@SimonAndréForsberg: It's not "another version"; it's identical. Why do you say CR "is a bad recommendation for these kinds of questions" when the identical match on CR has four upvotes, four answers (one of which is accepted) and no closevotes? Clearly, the CR community disagrees with you and Loki about what CR is for. As far as I can tell, it is for code review. It certainly is not for "a specific problem" or indeed "problems" at all! — Lightness Races in Orbit 59 secs ago
Now I'm really irritated @SimonAndréForsberg ...
Lightness has sub 200 rep here and he's trying to argue with us that the question here has no close votes... he can't even see the close votes...
@nhgrif I think my final comment there explained it. If he wants to discuss it further, he can come here to chat. Let's keep the comments clean.
@skiwi Mocking!
@SimonAndréForsberg Monking Simon
Yeah, I'm done commenting there.
Did you see my chat message about -> versus .?
10:42
@Mast no, I'm pretty sure replacing a function with your own function is called Mocking and not Monking. ;-)
I think you're supposed to be using -> when the left part is a pointer, not the right part...
Which is what the code you linked me to is doing
@nhgrif yup. noted. just wanted to make it clear that it was not a problem. I am btw unsure why the question has 3 close votes
Because for me, it won't compile
Because of ->
@nhgrif oh, that might be it yes.
My IDE says that he should be using . in both places he's using -> and it won't compile without changing that.
I was trying to draw more attention to this earlier before we got so many answers and votes and such.
I don't think this guy has ever put his code in a compiler perhaps?
Or I am missing something.
What I especially don't understand is why we have so many answers and no one has addressed my comment (to explain why I'm wrong and that the code isn't broken)
10:49
@SimonAndréForsberg Okay, so that's mocking
So... does anyone here know anything about C++ to explain to me why my close vote is wrong?
And if you can't explain to why it's wrong, do you know C++ well enough to agree with me?
@nhgrif Link?
And if not that, can you copy & paste the code into an IDE and see if it'll compile for you?

Q: Rule Of Three for a Coordinate class

xXAnointedXxI just recently got back into C++ and did a quick and simple exercise in the Rule of Three. The code for the copy constructor, overloaded assignment operator, and destructor follows below for my class (code is also below), and I was wondering if someone could take a quick look at it and point out...

@nhgrif I bet @200_success or @LokiAstari know a thing or two about it. I have no clue if it's just your compiler being wonky or if there is indeed a problem.
Xcode says both times he uses -> for source->name are broken.
10:52
@SimonAndréForsberg: This conversation is absurd. Basic, clear code review requests are off-topic on Code Review? Lol. I'll just leave you to it then. — Lightness Races in Orbit 54 secs ago
And says both should be source.name
I'm not going to respond to that, but...
Now he's being absurd.
@nhgrif Doesn't compile under g++ (no options)
Cast a close vote then (if not already)?
Ideally, we need to have the question on hold before even more answers get posted.
None of the existing answers address this (so far as I can tell), so theoretically, this could be edited to be fixed
But ideally, this would've been closed before any answers posted.
On-topic helpcenter for CR states: Trouble-shooting, debugging, or understanding code snippets is off-topic. — Mast 47 secs ago
@nhgrif As long as they keep it on SO, I see no problem. As long as they don't migrate it here.
10:55
@Mast ... I linked you to a Code Review question...
Oh, yes, that's the same question...
My bad.
Nuke from high orbit.
@LightnessRacesinOrbit Defines what you mean by "Code Review request". "This code works, how can I make it better" is definitely a code review request, but questions of the form "I am not sure if this works or not" needs a good old fashioned test, not a code review. Further questions? Please visit The 2nd Monitor or Code Review Meta. — Simon André Forsberg 49 secs ago
I think I should look into preventing @Duga from catching more than one comment on a question.
@SimonAndréForsberg Why?
There's no flood.
It probably encourages these extended conversations.
Which just frustrates me, because I formerly had some amount of respect for Lightness Races in Orbit.
It's hard to have respect for someone who can't even read through the help center once, yet continues to argue with regulars about what is and isn't on-topic on the sites they frequent.
10:58
Because it tends to cause more discussion. It creates noisy comments. Sometimes, like now, it can be an issue of one user correcting a comment, then it causes a reply by the original user, then that causes two replies from CR regulars, then that causes a reply, then that causes three replies by even more CR regulars...
@nhgrif I have respect for him, but I would like to know what his definition of a "code review request" is.
I think he might be trying to ask for a code review, for which there is an actual forum — Lee Yi 51 secs ago
And, he actually does have a sort of good point... if the question is off-topic for CR, how come multiple of our regulars have answered it?
2
Because it's broken as far as I am capable of telling, and @Mast says it is too
