@Mat'sMug yikes :)
I opened an issue to pay that technical debt.
:see_no_evil:
why did you choose that solution over the one using declaration.Selection?
@Hosch250 If you're going to learn SQL, may as well get SQL Server Express (free) from Microsoft. It comes with AdventureWorks example database that is good for learning modern RDBMS
I believe I have it.
(I'd get it, if I weren't on a Mac lol)
05:06
Something about SQL Server came with my VS Pro installation.
Trouble is, I don't have a query to write.
I have to do one here because I don't have access to any other databases I can SQLize.
Just write a SELECT and try to join tables correctly, and apply aggregates & filters. SELECTs are the most difficult, other operations are pretty easy for the most part
@mjolka because the Declaration.Selection doesn't seem to be reliable - I'm using it to navigate and select identifiers in the code pane, and sometimes the selection in the code pane doesn't match the actual position and/or length of the identifier I'm supposed to be selecting
@sᴉɔuɐɹɥԀ Are you kidding me?
The SELECT is the easy part, the JOIN was hard.
I know SELECT and WHERE from Linq.
You almost never do SELECT without JOIN ;)
Huh?
05:09
> SELECTs are the most difficult, other operations are pretty easy for the most part
I can do a SELECT c.Id FROM Comments c without a JOIN.
@Hosch250 the joins are your navigation properties..
@Mat'sMug might be worth tracking down why that is
OK...
I'm not going to write anything now, my eyes are filming over so I can't even read my screen.
indeed - and it will happen. but when I end up refactoring the RenamePresenter the whole logic will probably end up in some IRefactoring implementation, and I might just use the TokenStreamRewriter for everything
#BecauseItsTheRightThingToDo
05:11
JOIN can also be used on UPDATE, but never on INSERT or DELETE. Those 3 and SELECT are the most important ones. The rest is mostly background stuff.
We need a mod for Australia time.
Don't think an employer would expect you to do much DDL, or write sprocs, triggers and other stuff unless you were getting hired specifically as a DBA.
@Hosch250 Who here lives in Australia?
@mjolka and @Mehrad
O HAI @chillworld :)
05:13
Ah, okay, I've been meaning to ask for a while (I also lie Aus)

I bet I spend 30 min here most days.
I know more Australians than the rest of my family combined, and I don't even have a personal social media.

05:15
I only have a Twitter for my app and an almost-abandoned blog.
@chillworld Monking
That's it, I'll write a query to find users in Australia.
I... don't think that data is publicly available, @Hosch250

Some of it is.

Although, you might be able to approximate it by using activity time
I'd love to come down there and live in the outback like McLeach.
yeah come smash a few tinnies and ride a kangaroo
@Quill some users have that field saying "Chair"
@Mat'sMug Fair enough
Which reminds me, @Hosch250: stuff is really important to master in SQL.

hey @Vogel612
Wow, Jon Skeet has reached about 112 million people on SO
and I got a measly 85k
which is (even though the rep difference is huge) only 22k less than here
I reached 261K on SO, wow
59K on CR even with quite low site activity
10:34
I have 121k here and 259k on SO.
The blog post doesn't explain what the "people reached" stat actually means. Is it just "total page views that included text you wrote or edited"?
Or total unique page views?
I saw a user with one question that had 33 views and 32 people reached
so I'd guess total page views
I don't think editing has anything to do with it though
just those you asked and those you have high voted answers on
Not sure if they actually track if you scroll down to the answer (probably not), so then it's likely a modifier based on the position of your post on the page?
10:46
This SEDE query purports to compute it
So if that's correct then it's "page views for questions you asked plus page views for questions you answered where your answer is accepted, is in the top 3, has ≥5 votes, or has ≥20% of the votes for answers on that question (excluding self-answers)"
And here's some probably long out-of-date speculation about what "page views" actually means

I always use braces, when I don't I am coding in VB
14:25
if there was a python flavor of C# I would use it
@BenVlodgi it's called VB
Braces are ugly
nonono
that is why braces are good.
14:26
VB is a C# flavor of BASIC... my least favorite language
if C# didn't have braces it would be VB
well and Semi-colons, thank God for those
There are a lot more differences..crucial ones
@BenVlodgi - I have two opinions on braces, if you're interested.
@rolfl lets hear them
Joe
Joe
@nhgrif Southeastern US is all I can mention for now.
14:27
With well-indented code, 1-liners are much more readable without braces.
With common tooling (IDE's, etc), it is very easy to make good code without the braces.
So, I like 1-liners without braces for that reason.... but.....
two things:
1. white-space indenting is too easy to f-up when code moves from one system to another (tabs, spaces, indent levels, etc...
@Lyle'sMug I use braces in VB too. And semicolons. It just won't compile.
2. code changes over time, and diffs from one verstion to the next are many times more complicated if there are no braces.
On the balance, having braces makes for more maintainable code, in a group dev environment.
@BenVlodgi What about F#?
@BenVlodgi IronPython
> IronPython is an open-source implementation of the Python programming language which is tightly integrated with the .NET Framework. IronPython can use the .NET Framework and Python libraries, and other .NET languages can use Python code just as easily.
So, it's sort of like the .net version of Jython?
14:31
I suppose
@JeroenVannevel I have heard of IronPython, and it has interested me, though I guess I mean, I'd like to have a flavor of C# that stole a few of pythons syntaxes
@RubberDuck I havent used, whats it like?
@BenVlodgi Then you're going to have to go towards F#
@BenVlodgi functional ....
That ^
It's hard to read and hipsters use it
2
It's perfect
14:32
@rolfl that makes sense. I'd probably had run into that more, if I had to dev with others
... I know "what" it is
@BenVlodgi Here's some code:
How do F# and Scala compare?
public class FizzBuzz{
    public static void main(String[] args){
        for(int i = 1 ; i < 101; i++)
            if(i % (5*3) == 0)
                System.out.println("FizzBuzz");
            else if(i % 3 == 0)
                System.out.println("Fizz");
            else if(i % 5 == 0)
                System.out.println("Buzz");
            else
                System.out.println(i);
    }
}
Now, I want to add a counter to that code, to count the number of FizzBuzz outputs.
This is what the diff looks like:
If the code had the braces in to start with, this is what the diff would look like:
Having the braces in to begin with, makes the change management easier, saves time for the maintainer, and generally prevents complicated changes from breaking other things.
@rolfl I see the benefit
If you don't need the braces at all (like in python), then the diff would be clean still
But, if you have to add braces because of a change, then you are modifying two lines of code that otherwise would not need to change
14:37
mhmm
Monking!
well in this case, I made it all one ternary.... so everyone is happy
Fundamentally that's is a problem with the diff algorithm: it's not syntax aware
@rolfl That's an interesting argument. On the flip side is the vertical space argument.
In 10 years time when we all have syntax-aware diffs, then it won't be an issue
14:39
When people come along 2 years after a change was made, and they look at the diff, and see the 'conditional line' (the if-statement line) has changed, they will spend additional time checking to see why, and then discover that nothing was actually changed there.
That's someone else's problem
Right, which is because the diff algorithm is line-based, but lines are not syntactic in your language
The base issue is that a 2-second code-completion at the original write time would save a 2-minute investigation later.
Worse, bugs are introduced in approximate proportion to the amount of code that is changed.
so, the maintenance risk later is greater.
1 min ago, by BenVlodgi
That's someone else's problem
^^^ what you're really saying is that you're more important than the next guy. You are probably trying to be funny, but it's not.
Just ask Apple ;-)
Jason Biggs and Adam Sandler are like twins
Apple loses millions due to a missing brace block and resulting complicated code change later ^^^
14:43
@rolfl It's also important to note that you might be the next guy.
including having to re-release an entire OS update.

Line-oriented diffs often make nonsense of changes to Lisp, for example
Diff tools are notoriously complicated even in line-orientation.
I am not a regular user of languages that are not line-oriented... though, I tend to use more lines than I used to just to help with debugging now.

I realized I would run into a problem if I wanted to access things in other scopes that might be loaded after my current file, and I didn't want to have to ex...

Q: Consecutive Primes challenge at CodeEval.com and memory allocation issue

YanI finally solved this challenge with using recursion and figured out why the automatic scorer wasn't passing my previous solutions. I was using NSMutableArray to store the numbers and with N=18 i was running out of allowed memory by codeeval.com I rewrote the code using integer arrays and i rec...

What UNIQUE keyword?
oh crap, the only way to climb up to 200 when you've paid a bounty, is to earn checkmarks... I'm capped at 150 (+15) already :(

Q: Mathematical Expression solver

Julia BrumfieldI'm writing a mathematical expression solver. I'm having a problem with getting the right answer. I no the problem is in taking the last number. here is my code `int r = 0; int n = 0; char op = '+'; for (int i = 0; i < e.length(); i++) if (E.charAt(i) == '+' || E.ch...

A: Using a UserPermissionService by all Presenters in the Application to control the access to commands

Lyle's MugI am looking at this Method private void ValidatePassword() { var hash = Encryption.GetHash(_LoginView.UserID, _LoginView.Password); var user = _DataService.GetPermissions(_DataService.GetUser(_LoginView.UserID)); if (user != null) { _Model = ...

I'm out of votes.
I spent a lot of my votes on zombies without upvotes last night.
very nice
@Hosch250 UNIQUE is used when creating tables and setting a primary key. If you're looking to SELECT unique records, you need SELECT DISTINCT Foo, Bar FROM MyTable

Q: Simple stack and list implementation using a Linked List in python.

BhargavI have three classes Node, Stack and List. The code works, but I feel there is a better way to do this. I would like to have some general critique. class Node: def __init__(self): self.item = None self.link = None class Stack: def __init__(self): self.top = 0...

Q: Python code when working with large tables/lists

BrassboundBatmanSo I am working on a project for a class. Completely open project, implemented however we wanted. It was suggested to not use recursion, but I don't know of another way to tackle it. We are given tables with attributes and a decision. We have to go through and basically make as many of the attri...

I have the set of first questions.
Now, I just need to figure out whether an answer was posted within 24 hours.
> I have completed the program and it works great for small data sets. For a table with 8 rows and 3 attributes, it completes in .002 seconds. For a table with 75 rows and 7 columns, it took about 12 minutes to complete.
12 minutes!?
Nooo, heading back into the depths of SO

Q: C# NetworkStream.Read doesn't take ulong parameter but only int

dolphinusWe want to send an byte[] of 8 000 000 bytes for exemple, but the function NetworkStream.Read can only accept int values, how can we get all the data? we try to put ulong in this function but it's not possible. //Reception of data ulong sizeTrame = mySize;//Really big size byte[] trame = new by...

Explaining things clearly is hard, I know
But surely it's not difficult to do better than this:
> We are given tables with attributes and a decision. We have to go through and basically make as many of the attributes in the table the same, while still keeping the table as a whole consistent. Meaning no two rows can have the same attributes, while having different decision values.
@sᴉɔuɐɹɥԀ It seems to be some kind of optimization problem, so a naïve implementation could easily be exponential
People wait 12 minutes to see if their code works?!
