+1096...
the author of a Scala plugin for static code analysis has starred Rubberduck! :)
I've had my posts on the Microsoft forums included as part of the Windows help pages, but that is the closest I've come to being recognized by anyone important.
@Hosch250 that's pretty cool!

Q: Please rate my obfuscated C code

LanaruThis is my first attempt at writing obfuscated C code. Please tell me what you think and if you like it!!!!! It took me a long time to figure out the trick =) int main(){char b[] = {72, 101, 108, 108, 111, 32, 119, 111, 114, 108, 100, 33, 42};char* c = b;while (*c != 42){putchar(*c++);}} I mad...

uh, no
21:03
Ah, ah, AHEM!
What's the right close reason?
I made a custom one
I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it's about golfed code. Please see our help center. — Mat's Mug 42 secs ago
Wait no
Vote to close as unclear...
Because technically... a bit of code-golfed code could be on-topic...
IF the intent is to make the code into actually good code.
on-topic checklist, point 4: Do I want the code to be good code? (i.e. not code-golfing, obfuscation, or similar)
> Please tell me what you think and if you like it!!!!!
21:06
@Mat'sMug Yes... but... isn't that question "Do I want the code to be good code?" (versus do I want it to be code-golf or obfuscation)
Why would it be off-topic to start with something that was code golf and WANT to turn it into non-golfed actually good code?
that's not what OP is asking here
No. And this question should be closed.
and burned
VTD'd
I'm not going to VTD. The question could be turned into a good question without changing the code.
that deserves a meta-discussion IMO
21:09
I'm opening a question.

Q: Multiple fallback functions until not null

ShawnFeatherlyI have a property (called "Head") that can be set externally. When "Head" is not set, it uses Unity3D's MonoBehaviour functions to try to find the best value for "Head". I started with a nested if, but the nesting was starting to get out of hand. if (Head == null) { Head = this.GetComponent<...

@Hosch250 thanks for the WP follow :)
Yeah, just logged in and found it.
I wish management, essays, college, AND Ben and Jerry's had never been even dreamed of!
That is NOT an OR, NOR a XOR, nor any other boolean operator, but an AND.
I think the only one I left out was the NAND and the XNOR.
@Hosch250 you mean it was featured by WordPress?
21:16
Well, it said "followed by someone you follow", or something like that.
So, basically what FB would call friends of friends.
oh nice

Q: Does original code being code-golf/obfuscated make a question automatically off-topic?

nhgrifFrom the Help Center: Do I want the code to be good code? @nhgrif The code would be so very different it is essentially asking for new code to be written.

Just post an answer.
un-golfing code wouldn't be the only case where your statement is true.
21:23
There's my go, sorry if it doesn't make sense.
I don't know what I'm doing.
My head is spinning, and I started discussing golfed code in my Ben and Jerry paper.
Aren't "reviews" for golfed code valid over at PPCG? As in, couldn't you paste some golfed code and people can help you golf more?
I'm not sure.
if they want to graduate, they should allow that IMO.
They might be on topic on PPCG meta.
Thanks for the comment @Mat'sMug and @rofi
21:27
Hmm... from what I see in the help center, it doesn't say that it is on topic, but it also doesn't say that it isn't off topic.
I'm pretty sure there are only puzzles allowed on the main site.
hey! welcome to The 2nd Monitor @cpicanco!
@SirPython There is a close reason for not having a clear winner.
Aha! That makes sense...
the "clear winner" would be the best-golfed version, no?
21:28
No thanks on comments, so :)
Hi, @cpicanco
@Mat'sMug I think so.
Atleast, from what I've seen before.
so, what would be the problem with "PLZ HALP GULF MAH CODEZ" questions?
Hi everyone, just enter to say thanks. I need to finish some commits.
@cpicanco come hang around here anytime!
21:31
@Mat'sMug A bad title?
lol yeah.. I guess.
Can u pleaze review my code?? — Lanaru 2 mins ago
@Jamal @200_success @rolfl ^^
It may need to be un-obfuscated first, otherwise my one review would be: "don't write code like this"
Community consensus is that obfuscated/golfed code is off-topic on this site, and our help center explicitly states that one of the criteria for on-topic questions is "Do I want the code to be good code? (i.e. not code-golfing, obfuscation, or similar)"; the whole point of this site is to help programmers write better code - golfing & obfuscating code isn't exactly a best practice for writing professional code... we'd be happy to review any of your actual, real project, best-looking working code though =) — Mat's Mug 45 secs ago
Who's good at Assembly?
@Jamal is :)
21:44
Somewhat
@Jamal better than I am!

Never heard of it
@Legato What do you need help with?
Just trying to understand what something does, heh.
21:46
Where is the code located?

Take your time, it's a pain. heh.
Are you wondering what task the program is trying to accomplish, or what specific parts of the code are doing?
former
22:03
@Legato I'm going to go through and add comments to each line of the code so if I can't find out what it's trying to accomplish, maybe you can find out
@SirPython It's okay, I think I'll practice some more simple things for a while, so I can understand this!
Oh! I appreciate that, thanks!

Q: How can you add values to an array in a serpentine like fashion?

Guardian969My overall goal is to create a minimum Difference method that separates a group of numbers (represented in ArrayList list) into even (or at least as even as possible) teams. I.E. as shown below, there is a 10, 9, 9, representing balanced teams. However, the section of code I cannot figure out is ...

@Legato I have fully commented the code. How would you like me to share the file with you?
22:24
Whatever is more convenient for you.
Is that the expected thing to do? How would it hold up in a code review? Thanks for the answer btw. — hraban 7 secs ago
@SirPython Thanks a lot, by the way. I found what I think are two simple 'challenges' to do, I'm going to try to do them, mind if I run them by you later? Probably not CR worthy stuff since I'm likely going to want to determine whether I'm effectively accomplishing the task in the first place. I've gotta practice somehow.
Thank you!
@Legato No problem! I'm glad to help.
23:03
OMGosh that question LOL
> I made it one line to make it more complicated hehe. :)

If u can figure out what it does I will be very impressed!
u dont say so.

Q: Design issue with constructors who has exceptions

user255572This has been boggling me for some time now and I can't think of any good solutions to it, at least with would satisfy my twisted mind. So lets say we have a class Person: public class Person { private String firstName; public Person(String firstName) throws IllegalArgumentException {...

@CaptainObvious I believe this is off-topic: hypothetical code
23:30
@Mat'sMug This doesn't really explain why asking for help un-golfing code should be off-topic.
And perhaps the best zinger on this I can offer you: If asking for help un-golfing or un-obfuscating code is off-topic because "you'd never write golfed code in a real project", then how come we allow LOLCODE questions? As far as I'm concerned, LOLCODE is obfuscated code, yet LOLCODE is on-topic.
And you want to say that golfed or obfuscated code is off-topic (even when the asker is asking for help making it less golfed or less obfuscated and more readable)?
I'm not arguing that a question asking to make golfed code more golfed should be on-topic. That needs to go to the code-golfing Stack Exchange site.
@SirPython Still around? I have the first half of something that you'll probably find trivial. It's only the first part. I commented in what I think I'm doing vs the code I'm using.
And moreover, @Mat'sMug, you probably really shouldn't claim community consensus on a topic actively being discussed on the meta.
23:45
What's particularly good about it?
It talks about how engineering software is different from "real" engineering and why.
Ah.
Makes an interesting point about the code being the final design and spec.
Some of it is a bit dated, but remarkably insightful and relevant still.
Care to weigh in, Duck?

@nhgrif Code Golf related questions are off-topic by community consensus. Just because you have raised the issue again, does not mean it is actively being discussed...
The distinction between ungolfing golfed code, and golfing ungolfed code is not really important.
23:50
Is the help center actually explicitly clear that any question that even is remotely related to code golf is automatically completely untopic?
either it is: trying to understand code you don't understand, or it is trying to make code you understand ununderstandable.
I don't think it's any where near clear. Is there an existing meta discussion?
Anyway, I'm not sure how most golfers do it, but I would typically write an ungolfed version in the first place, and golf it afterward.
It's not down to those two, @rolfl
23:51
Why can't it be: trying to make code I understand more understandable to others
I may @nhgrif, but I personally don't think that particular question was on topic for a few different reasons.
Apart from stating the obvious, though, there is Programming Puzzles and Code Golf site too.
Which is exactly what ANY question that asks for assistance in making code more readable is asking.
But that's asking for the opposite of what PPCG is about.
What are the chances anyone bringing golfed code here genuinely wants a review?
low.
23:52
Why is LOLCODE on topic and ungolfing golfed code not (assuming the question has a clear pseudocode explanation of what it does so there's no question about what the code does and its intent)?
further, if the person bringing the code just wants to make a challenge for other people to understand the code, then it is not a code review.
The question that encouraged this meta was clear cut off topic, yes.
I think un-golfing could be on topic, but it'd be a rare thing to see.
If it isn't presented as "a challenge to understand the golfed code", I can't even fathom what the problem with it could possible be. LOLCODE is still on topic last I checked.
And the correct review to any LOLCODE question is "Write in another language."
I agree, but chances are very high that it would be code the OP doesn't understand. Otherwise, they would bring their un-golfed version.
23:55
meh, one debate at a time, and even then, hypothetical situations are not much value in debating.
Agreed ^
@RubberDuck If it's asking for an explanation (if the asker isn't capable of providing a clear cut explanation of what the code does) then close it.
between 'opinion-based, unclear, and "we don't make good code worse", we are covered.
But there are existing close reasons for this. "Asking for explanation" and "unclear what you're asking"
Yup. That ^.
23:56
And "other".... there's always "other".
> I am voting to close this question because: golf
Also, when is golfed code ever "this is real code".
I think the biggest benefit to saying golfing is off topic is defining what we're not
When is LOLCODE ever "this is real codE"
that's my whole point in mentioning LOLCODE
Before you throw that back....
that,
It lets new users know what we're not.
You can't throw that at golfed if you keep LOLCODe on topic.
Make LOLCODE offtopic, and I'll be right there with you on golfed code as "not real code"
but LOLCODE isn't even remotely real code.
23:58
LOLCODE can be used to improve your understanding of programming, and can be part of your developemnt as a good programmer.
1) Write pseudo-code for some particular something. 2) Because you're doing it for a code-golf contest, your original implementation is code-golf. 3) Later, you decide that this particular something that your golfed code does would actually be useful in your other very real project, but you don't want to commit code-golf to that project... so you come to CR to ask for help turning your original golfed implementation into actual commit-able code. — nhgrif 23 mins ago
golfing can only be used for entertainment.
And code golf can't?
That ^. Yeah. I'm with @nhgrif there @rolfl.
Golfing can be very educational.
That's true, I guess.
but, it is also clearly on-topic on a different site.
23:59
RELOAD!
we are not in the business of "stealing scope" from PP&CG
