@Donald.McLean no flashbacks for me apparently... but damn, that was a good one.

Q: PHP Bilingual Error System Ideas

McGee.WIllI am building a php based mobile website that must be in both Spanish and English. This is my first bilingual site so I've been having to re-think a lot of coding practices I currently use to accommodate multiple languages. I'm using a custom MVC pattern and currently I'm trying to use the same...

Q: Overloading methods take single or array arguments

Dominick PiganellI'm writing a simple utility class for sending an email. I'm not sure what's the proper way to present this to a consumer. Should I force them to use an array in the send method? Or should I provide an overload so they can pass a single argument? public class SimpleSender { public static void s...

Hey I would like help from someone who either has been a hiring manager for technology-related staff, or has good experience applying for such. Anyone available to chat in a separate room? Won't take long :)
@SimonAndréForsberg And it sets up a deluge of some serious beef stew in upcoming episodes.
Hey. :)
Oh boy, do I write ugly Java.

Q: C programming - linked lists

RoyWhen i run the following program, for some reason the code gives me a segmentation fault (core dumped). typedef struct WordNodeType { char word[MAX_WORD_CHARS]; struct WordNodeType *next; } WordNode; blah blah here WordNode* AddtoList(WordNode* Top, char result[MAX_WORD_CHARS]) { ...

Q: Using lambda functions to structure code in C++11

tsikiSomething that I've done recently after becoming more familiar with C++11's lambda functions is that I've started embedding comments into the names of lambda functions. For example, previously I'd have something like this (contrived example): // Calculate stuff int stuff = 0; for (int i = 0; i ...

@Donald.McLean Oh yes! And it's only 8 episodes in to the season!
@kleinfreund Oh boy, then get it reviewed!
I think I have some questions first.
I'm at the very start of it all.
For example, I'm writing Java in Sublime Text (can be compiled from there) and run it from the command line.
However I may want to use an IDE, do I?
@kleinfreund It's a matter of taste. Some people like IDEs, and some don't. And of course choice of which IDE is pretty much a religious issue. I would hate, hate, hate, hate to work without IDEA, but YMMV.
@kleinfreund Auto-completion and all the things an IDE have is cool to have. You will gain a lot of time. But it's not necessary.
I've never used Sublime Text for Java, but if it supports auto-completion, go to declaration, refactoring and other fun stuff and you're feeling comfortable using it, then I suggest continue using it.
An IDE like Eclipse would be really helpful if you want to add plugins such as RoboVM, Android, or Git
19:36
@Donald.McLean I've spent some time with IDEA lately, I'm liking it. There's just a few things I'm missing in it though that Eclipse has. Or perhaps I just haven't found them yet.
I stay with ST for now and see how it works out.
git can always be used from command-line :)
For now I only need Java/Python for the uni and I run both from the command line.
@SimonAndréForsberg What are you missing?
Out of curiosity, what IDE's are you guys using?
19:37
@kleinfreund If you're in an learning state, not using an IDE can make you learn a lot of things than an IDE would automatically do.
Yeah, thought about that @Marc
Eclipse or Eclipse STS here
netbeans and eclipse for me
@kleinfreund I've used Eclipse, Netbeans, and IntelliJ (a.k.a. IDEA). (And SpringSource). I like Eclipse and IntelliJ, don't like Netbeans that much.
19:39
@SimonAndréForsberg I know for a fact that GIT support is built in.
@Donald.McLean I'm missing the overview of all compiler warnings and compiler errors in the entire current project.
@Donald.McLean I know it's built-in in IDEA (I just haven't started that feature that much I guess)
@Donald.McLean I also miss the Ctrl + T that Eclipse has, so you can see subclasses and superclasses of the current class, and which of them implements a particular method.
@SimonAndréForsberg I think you have to do a full project build to get that.
@Donald.McLean isn't it all cached somewhere, somehow?
@SimonAndréForsberg I don't remember seeing anything like that, but there are lots of features I've never tried.

I got my dream job thanks to you guys :D
It sounds like I could benefit from visiting The Workplace...
I just gotta figure out what my dream job is first...
Congratulations on your dream job btw, @JaDogg
19:46
My dream job is closer to home
My current job is exceptionally close to what I would imagine my dream job would be.
I think I would like to work at Google, IBM (perhaps become a monkey like @rolfl), or some big game company.
And with a great deal more collaboration.
The only reason I can hang about StackExchange all day is because I'm working solo
You slack off less when working together
@SimonAndréForsberg I'd be interested knowing that too
now I'm curious about that Control T in Eclipse...
Well it's not for coffee
only for tea
19:53
@janos I'll try to remember to ping you if I ever find out.
on the other hand, the more I use IntelliJ, the less I miss that thing
it doesn't bother me at all anymore
Control H seems to be the equivalent
@janos I'll try to remember that one.
I use Ctrl + Shift + A a lot in IntelliJ, but unfortunately it's way too often that doesn't help me find what I'm looking for :(
you can always ask me ;)
you might be interested in my cheat sheet: github.com/janosgyerik/cheatsheets/blob/master/…

@janos How have I survived without it?
@janos You seem to be a programmer that documents things. You are a rare breed.

impossible to keep everything in my head
20:21
@janos That's awesome, I need to start making cheat sheets and documentation more often
github is really good for that
I've sent an email to the editors of the book I'm reviewing that the best I can do is make the examples compile
Because I have no idea what the examples are supposed to represent
half of them don't even give output, lol
So, anyone done any caching in .NET, maybe able to help me out?
I hate pointers btw

A constructor that returns void
riiiight.
@Donald.McLean You need to explain to her that Python is named after Monty Python, not the snake.

Q: Random Distribution to fit an Average Python

Xodarap777This is from my own question on Overflow: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/27007102/random-distribution-to-fit-an-average-python/27007912 I want to get average numbers from a range such that they fit an intended average. I expect something bell-curve-like, but asymmetrical unless the average ...

Now I feel like inventing a language named Bean
although the concept of beans within programming already exist...
why Bean?
You have two kinds of people who document: Writers, readers and smokers.
I never got the concept of beans
I just expected them to have a method grind() or something
@Pimgd That really grinds my beans.

Q: Java word count with consideration of the size of the word

@SimonAndréForsberg a language with Mr Bean as a mascot? No one would want to use it!
@bazola Well... if Monty Python is the "mascots" for Python... :)
@SimonAndréForsberg good point! but most people using it probably have never watched the flying circus
Hopefully, most people that would use the Bean language wouldn't have watched Mr. Bean :)

@200_success Actually, no. I don't like dynamically typed languages, so I'm perfectly happy if I just don't ever use one.
21:08
Wait, Python was named after anything at all?!
I thought the obvious references would've been too obvious

Q: Check if any of class properties is not null/empty/was assigned

However, all of the properties of this class are optionally filled in by the user, which means all of them could be null/default, and in this case I would like not to render the fieldset at all instead of displaying an empty one. Q: Android AsyncTask and SQLite good practices

JakkraSo, I made a database for my Android app using SQLite and it works fine. However as I understood SQLite calls shouldn't be made on UI thread. So what I did is this below. Is that OK? Or a big NONO? Thanks :) /** * @param howMany Amount of Stations returned, passing null returns all. ...

P i I've reworked (for C++11) a section of PyCXX which contained an almost identical iterator and const_iterator. I would like to know whether there is any way I can further tidy the code.
