Q: Minimum number of swaps to sort an array that has duplicates and 3 distinct numbers with N numbers

TaglinkI'm not sure how to find the minimum amount of swaps to sort an array that has duplicates with N total numbers. The array is made up of 3 distinct numbers, 1, 2 and 3. So for example, the minimum amount of swaps to sort the array [2, 2, 1, 3, 3, 3, 2, 3, 1] would be 4. You could sort this array i...

Code like $0 = substr($0,1,i-1) x substr($0,i+k) is most likely going to be horrendously expensive. If this code is working, posting to Code Review is usually better. Personally speaking, I'd rewrite this in Python. — Ken Y-N 39 secs ago

This is not Code Review. If you have a specific issue, please tell us what it is, provide the relevant code and environment information for us to reproduce it, and we will assist you where possible, but we are not offering review advice for an entire section of code. I will however provide you with one issue, I can see, based purely on what you've posted, set size=%%~zi will not do whatever it is you think it will do! — Compo 44 secs ago
@Compo Why are you dropping Code Review's name when the code doesn't work. Additionally what part of "I want to check the file size but the %pd_comm_file_size% is missing in the log or can not get from another value." is not a specific issue? — Peilonrayz 58 secs ago
Because of the opening sentence of the post @Peilonrayz, "Please help to review my batch script.", (Code Review). If that isn't clearly asking for something other than to fix a specific code issue, (Stack Overflow), then perhaps I'm an idiot. And whilst I'm here, I've already explained why the size is not working, in that same comment too. — Compo 32 secs ago

SO users getting triggered.

@Compo That's a phrasing issue, doesn't mean the code is ready for Code Review. Please take a look at their help center and the guide to Code Review for Stack Overflow users. — Mast 40 secs ago
@Compo The word "review" can mean more than "code review", like "can you help me review my specific issue with my code and fix my bug." I think you have misunderstood, I'm not saying to answer it I'm saying the thing I quoted is a specific issue. — Peilonrayz 25 secs ago

I seem to have a knack for having crappy conversations on any main today and yesterday... I think I need to kill a rabbit or two for some lucky feet

shrug
We've seen much worse.

Well I had a terrible conversation yesterday. This and I contested someone saying the birthday problem is \$O(n)\$ and their response was "you said it was in your answer".

I've just realized that Python programmers and web developers really don't have any idea how much infrastructure code there is to getting a C program that actually does something working.

@pacmaninbw I don't think you'd have to look far you could just have asked me ;)

11:36 AM
@Peilonrayz The question we disagreed on yesterday is closed, and it is obvious why we disagreed.
I need to learn Python 10 lines to do the work of 250 lines of code.

@pacmaninbw I don't see how that's related. People in C land just have a higher bar then Python land on Code Review.
It's not indicative of a lack of understanding.

I guess we're just badasses. It's so easy to screw up in C.
:)
Speaking from experience.

@pacmaninbw That's because "there's a framework for that", if there wasn't you'd have to write all that nonsense in Python
Well maybe not all of it, minus the memory management and such

The question was actually about memory management.

I thought you were talking about something else with that comment - not the question. Otherwise my blindness is way worse that my optician thinks, cause I'm not seeing 250 LOC

12:04 PM
@CaptainObvious Any question about broken code here?

@pacmaninbw Not from me :) I know from having a program persistently segfault it is more than a little warning

@Peilonrayz The problem was there should have been at least 250 lines of code.
@Peilonrayz :)

@pacmaninbw When I said "I'm not saying it's an invalid point of view; I'm not going to enforce rules that aren't on meta." I really do agree with Loki's POV. But I'm here to enforce Code Review's rules not Peilonrayz' rules. If you or anyone can link Loki's POV to meta in a way I understand then you'd have my full support in its closure.
However many meta posts have a "it's not a great question, but there is enough for at least one comment", so I don't think you'll find one.

Okay. I'll think about that. Opinion based should be in some meta if not on CR, maybe SO.
@Mast have you seen any posts anywhere explaining the opinion based close reason?

Ryan Donovan on September 16, 2020
The next big revolution in coding practice might be closer than we think, and it involves helping computers to code themselves. By utilizing natural language processing and neural networks, some researchers think that within a few years we can remove humans entirely from the coding process. If you work as a coder, you’ll be glad to hear that they are wrong.

12:17 PM
@pacmaninbw On CR it rarely applies.
Or did you mean network-wide?

I'm looking for an explanation anywhere on the network as a basis for when it might apply on CR.

@Mast That doesn't really make sense. It's just text change as far as I can see.

It's not a great fit, but the discussion and the comments could be enlightening.

> Opinion-based: While many good questions generate some degree of opinion based on expert experience, answers to this question will tend to be almost entirely based on opinions, rather than facts, references, or specific expertise.

12:30 PM
@Peilonrayz Exactly.
13 mins ago, by Mast
@pacmaninbw On CR it rarely applies.
Should we be following that rule strictly, CR couldn't exist.

@Mast And when it does apply, it generally means the context is missing.

@pacmaninbw Or the question is too broad, or any of the other already existing close reasons, yes.
"Should I implement X" questions, for example.

@Mast That is what we are discussing.

@pacmaninbw Sometimes we close those with the custom reason "Feature request, not a request for review".
Failing the first check of the help-center usually disqualifies a question.

This question didn't really apply as a feature request, it supplied 2 options. My problem with it was that I didn't think the code had been written yet based on the very first paragraph.
And @Peilonrayz is correct, the opinion based comment is correct but insufficient for closing. Lack of context was a better choice.
@Peilonrayz My bad, you are mostly correct.

12:38 PM
@pacmaninbw Hypothetical.
I don't believe the code is written either.

@Mast Most definitely.

The options could be a , which we allow for some odd reason.

Yes but it is still missing data to form a good opinion

Yup.

@Mast I recall that being a hot topic

12:40 PM
@Peilonrayz Yea, it depends on who's around whether there's consensus on it.

@Mast Please could you explain to me why?

Sure. It starts already in the first sentence.
> I need to know which is a better option, provided they both work as intended.
Reads like they haven't been tested. User has no clue whether both work or not.

@Mast Personally I'm fine with them, but I may be biased cause I've asked one ;) Normally the answer is "both are bad"

There are no concerns mentioned, no preferences.
Not whether it's about speed, maintainability, footprint, nothing.
That DataBlock struct looks awfully minimal too. In a real-world example, it would get a lot more complicated really fast.

Both helpful comments, thanks. I didn't know about codereview - in future I'll post this sort of thing there. — Dan Goldwater 1 min ago

12:43 PM
> Which should I use given the circumstances
The circumstances are hardly told.
It's not a black and white situation, but IMO, it's dark-grey enough.
Martin raised some very good points.
And he knows his stuff.

@Mast I can see that reading, but it can also be read as "the code works correctly" - hence my comment and lack of a VTC for that.
I'm not really sold on the rest being off-topic. Posting only a programming challenge description and the code is perfectly on-topic. And MRC is a grey terror. Additionally whilst Loki raised some good points I don't see how they are related to Code Review's rules, and seem to only relate to parts of MRC I don't think we've closed for in the past.
And once again I remember why I hate MRC

MRC is definitely grey terror, we agree on that.

12:59 PM
Might have to look into making it less black and white. Possibly a strict but unenforced system would be better, "all imports are needed" but we just kinda ignore it at times. like np is numpy

Too many people answering off-topic questions doesn't help either.

@Mast We always seem to come back to this.

@Mast good lord what a mess

@Mast Yeah that doesn't help. But making MRC more black and white would help prevent us wasting so much time and energy over some small things.
And by us I mean more the people here / on meta

@Peilonrayz Probably.
But can we agree on what it should be?
We need consensus before we put it in the rules, and I think that's where it hangs on MRC.

1:05 PM
@Mast Given the frostyness of meta, that's probably a no :(

This is one of those crap-things you get when trying to build a community after the platform has started, instead of the other way around like one should.
We all agree something should be done, but we can't really agree on what.
Which reminds me, I think we need to formalize our response to that modal thing Catija came through with a while back, or the issue will go stale.
Or did I miss something?

AFAIK @SᴀᴍOnᴇᴌᴀ was happy with it.
I'm as happy as SE will allow me to be with it, it'd be nice if we could just cut the bottom half off. Are you happy with it @Mast or is there anything you don't like?

LOL - When did the gray hair start growing?
I didn't get my BS in computer science until I was 29.

My first grey hair was quite early, luckily it takes a while for the rest to come through.

I got my first one at about 35, I started dying my hair around 53 and I gave up trying to cover up the gray at 61.
Taken at the Hollywood Bowl last year.

If it goes anything like it went with my father, I'll be 95%-ish grey at 50.

@pacmaninbw Wow, that's quite a few years. I guess me hoping it'd be over after a short 10 years was a bit far-fetched

@Peilonrayz My father hard dark hair well into his 60's (my age now), it's all my mothers fault, but I'm blessed because her father was bald at 50.
It all depends.
I drive a convertible and that should explain the messy hair.
I've also lost 40 pounds (18KG) since the photo was taken.

@DanielA.White Don't use the existence of Code Review as a reason to close a question. From now on evaluate the question and use a reason like; needs focus, primarily opinion-based, etc. — Peilonrayz 47 secs ago

If this code is working but could use improvement, then Code Review would be the right place to ask. — Michael Murphy 36 secs ago

@MichaelMurphy In the future please link to the help center and use wording that shows the post may be off-topic when recommending Code Review. Take, "This may be on-topic on Code Review. Please check if it is on-topic and how to post a good question before posting there." — Peilonrayz 58 secs ago

Answered, but while questions such as these are ok to ask on Stack Overflow, they are more appropriate on codereview.stackexchange.compygeek 18 secs ago
@pygeek when suggesting users post on CR it would be great if there was also a suggestion like "Please read the relevant help center pages like 'What topics can I ask about here?' and 'How do I ask a good question?". In the current form the code above would likely be closed as off-topic because it is missing context about what the code actually does - i.e. looks very hypothetical. — Sᴀᴍ Onᴇᴌᴀ 37 secs ago

You’re telling me that if this code came to you for code review you’d sign it off? Really? Or is this some sort of trolling? — Boris the Spider 51 secs ago
