@MakarandKokane: I think that it must not optimize it, see my comment below Martin's answer on codereview. "A mechanism could be put in place to generate unique Ids.": Sure. Hi there o/ Long time no see. I have this small function which converts a custom JSON expression to a mssql query: dpaste.de/N557 I wonder how can I use recurssion to get rid of the duplicate code. It seems like when I have a list I do nothing different. If somebody has some time to help me I'd really appreciate it ^^

12:50 PM
@яүυк That's a 404 :|

@Zeta oupsieee, dpaste.de/VVK4
There you go. Dunno what happened to that

I'd go with "yes, somewhat, but no".
You allow stray logical operators at the moment.
E.g. expression = [ "OR", "AND" ] yields an invalid query, but not any error message.

@Zeta I have other conditions to test for those :P What I'm interested in is a somewhow nicer solution
And apparently I feel like recursivity would fit the best

Oh. Well, sure, that will work.

That JSON might become really nasty ... and I feel like I'm loosing my minds with this recursive solution

12:57 PM
    elif isinstance(obj, list):
        query += '('
        for o in obj:
            query += json_to_mssql_inner(o)
        query += ')'
json_to_mssql_inner should just work on the whole JSON, not the expression value, e.g.
def json_to_mssql(expression):
    expression = expression.get('expression')
    return json_to_mssql_inner(expression)
After all, the expression key is only a top-level key AFAIK. Therefore, it shouldn't be part of the recursive call. It's easy to handle that if you add a separate function for the outermost level.

You meant something like this?

def recursive(expression):
expression = expression.get('expression')
query = ''

for obj in expression:
if isinstance(obj, dict):
if obj.get('operator') not in COMPARISON_OPERATORS:
print('Invalid comparison operator!')
else:
query += '{} {} {}'.format(obj.get('field'), obj.get('operator'), obj.get('value'))
elif isinstance(obj, list):
query += '('
for o in obj:
query += recursive(o)
query += ')'
elif isinstance(obj, str):
if obj not in LOGICAL_OPERATORS:
print('Invalid logical operator!')

formatting doesn't work that way in chat messages

@Vogel612 I completely forgot

@яүυк no, since all your non-root nodes don't contain expression. Use two functions instead, where the first is an unwrapper and the second is the actual recursive one.
def list_to_mssql(expression):
    query = ''

    for obj in expression:
        if isinstance(obj, dict):
            if obj.get('operator') not in COMPARISON_OPERATORS:
                print('Invalid comparison operator!')
            else:
                query += '{} {} {}'.format(obj.get('field'), obj.get('operator'), obj.get('value'))
        elif isinstance(obj, list):
            query += '('
            for o in obj:
                # Recursive call here
                query += list_to_mssql(o)
Or something similar, I'm not a Python person, sorry :/

psst... now you have uncompilable code. :) scriptPath & argument aren't declared and you have Option Explicit set (as you should!). Also, var1 and var2 are now declared without being used. Sorry for the code review, I know that's not what you're after... — FreeMan 19 secs ago

1:11 PM
@Zeta looks almost perfect but: dpaste.de/6rDU

Herp derp. You already have a loop.
That's why I like types.
Either way, query += '(' + list_to_mssql(obj) + ')' in the list-path should suffice.

Awesome, now I understood what's going on!
Thanks a million :P

single_to_mssql :: Part -> QueryString
list_to_mssql   :: [Part] -> QueryString
json_to_mssql   :: Expression -> QueryString
Three functions would probably make it more structured.
But since your expression is always a list (on top-level), the current way is OK enough.
@яүυк Now go ahead and post it on the site so that someone who actually knows Python can shred my improvements to dust :D

@Zeta I can do that by myself. And when I feel like there are improvements that can be done, I'll do so :P

@DaveNewton And android isn't "highly configurable/extensible app". But I will say 100% that I would reject a code review attempting to use reflection here, and would have a serious discussion on code quality with the author. It is NOT an acceptable solution- its less readable, indlexible, and harder to understand what's going on. — Gabe Sechan 15 secs ago
I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it is asking for a code review (and this thus too broad / opinion based). It could probably be adjusted to be on topic for the code review stackexchange. — Quentin 13 secs ago
Shouldn't this be a question for Code Review? We're talking about working code that might need improvement after all.. — icecub 27 secs ago

7:22 PM
@GabeSechan Maybe your Android apps aren't highly configurable or extensible, but that's not all apps. Some apps are complex and require more than static code because of their requirements (like mine did). Reflection here with the code shown is overkill--but there are many situations where it is not (e.g., serialization, UI presentation without explicit coding (one reason why JBs were invented in the first place), etc). Dismissing reflection as fundamentally wrong isn't a code review. — Dave Newton 59 secs ago
