Q: Java animations

leganoIs it possible to create an animation of a ball moving from left to right in a specific spot without using images and by compiling a .java file and running it through a .html file on jcreator? Also, with the extends applet class. If so, how can I do it?

Do you have a benchmark?
@JDługosz Thanks. I am just vested in the answer after trying and failing to figure it out myself.

I enjoyed this question a lot, but it doesn't seem to be a Stack Overflow question. If it works and you like it, use it; the rest is opinion (it seems to me; of course I could be wrong). Maybe something for codereview? In any case it isn't clear to me what you think is gained here in practical terms. I was doing "code injection" in iOS long before it was even a term (that I knew of); it is natural to pass the needed data to the next view controller. So why make it more complicated? — matt 24 secs ago

Q: Split a 2D space into bins with equal number of points (R programming)

@bruglesco @JDługosz@bruglesco The problem was, as burglesco suggested, the std::map inside the Cell class. Moving it to the Resources class cut down startup time from 5 seconds to ~500ms. The flattening of the vector matrix didn't make any difference performance-wise. I've also implemented (almost) all of the other suggestions. Replacing the index based for loop with the auto iterator was also a few ms faster. (see my latest Pull Request)

That said, if you want help with improving a certain of your code you should head over to CodeReview, however take their Tour and read their How to ask before asking a question (which you should have done here as well). — Visual Vincent 10 secs ago

@JDługosz I read about strides on stackoverflow but that wasn't applicable to my problem and not well explained.I have a for loop with (x/y position +-1), but i think strides would eliminate the need of iterating over the whole vector, right? You also suggested that i could get rid of returning the "foundobjects" vector. But how would i access the found elements in the cell class? I'd really appreciate an example (or even a pull request? :D) that we could discuss further.

5:45 AM
@SamOnela The code wasn't updated between revisions.
The answer isn't a review either, but back in '12, things were different.
Usually the best policy with old, answered questions is to leave them alone. But if they do pop up in the review queue and they are broken, well, they're broken. Broken code gets closed.
Are you saying it works?

Q: Simplifying minimum search of two dimensional vector with complex struct

TowelDayGuyIs there a way to simplifiy this function? I tried to use the std::min_element function inside the lambda, but i dont get it to work with *var. const auto miniFunc = [](const std::vector<std::vector<KEntryContact>> & entryContact, double KEntryContact::*var) -> double { double min = DBL_MAX;...

@Chris I can’t find foundobjects so I don’t recall what that was about. I suspect I was saying that a finder function should return an iterator rather than copy all the found elements by value.

8:39 AM
@SamOnela They're just code dumps, which aren't allowed.
@SamOnela It shows on the edit page fine, they probably havn't enabled MathJax on the review page. So it's possibly a bug

@JDługosz @JDługosz I meant neighbors (that are found) by foundobjects. returning an Iterator is a great idea! I'll look into that. And how would I implement finding the objects with a stride ? with a for loop? Do you have any example for a x -1 to x+1 / y-1 to y+1 stride used? I really like the idea but I don't have a clue about the syntax / how to implement that differently than using a for loop.

8:58 AM
@Chris You want to go through the list of 8 adjacent neighbor cells, right?
Make a constant array (created once, when you know the board size) that contains
```{ (-width-1), 1, 1, (width-2), 2, (width-2), 1, 1 }
```
. Start with the middle cell’s address, and each time through the loop **add** the next element in this array.
I don't know why formatting is not working at all for me here!
For using the resulting elements, a for-loop is easy. But that puts the logic you want to do in the middle of the loop, so you can’t just reuse that loop! The fancy way would be to create an iterator remembering the current state; an easy way is to pass in a lambda to use in the loop.

OP is trying to solve a programming problem with a slightly obscure requirement, namely "No extra memory is allowed" (presumably meaning "O(1) extra memory is allowed") but has not succeeded in meeting the requirement. Were we right to close the question?
Just a heads-up about this question codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/195104/…
There are a bunch of reopen votes even though the OP has not yet solved the problem. If you voted to reopen, did you do so because you believe the OP solved the problem? Or because you think the question is on-topic despite the OP not having solved the problem?

@GarethRees I've ran the code and it seems to output the correct result (Py2 only). What do you mean by they havn't solved the problem?

@Peilonrayz Read the question carefully.

@GarethRees I have, it's not jumping out to me. What do you mean be they havn't solved the problem?

@Peilonrayz If it's not jumping out from the question, maybe look at the comments to the post?

Ignoring the space requirement do you think the code works as intended? And so your problem is only with the space requirement?

9:45 AM
This question should be asked to code review stack exchange site — csblo 55 secs ago

As I understand it, the OP's intention is to solve the problem. The problem includes the space requirement.

Do you have any problems with the question other than the space requirement?

@GarethRees for the record: I'm not convinced that the problem is straightforwardly solveable in less than O(N) memory
unless you are allowed to change the matrix, you'll need some counters to keep track of which elements you're currently examining

@Vogel612 l[0].append(l[1].pop()) a bubble sort and indexing defo will. Probably can be made more efficient, but IDK.

you can use something similar to the merge step in merge-sort
because the rows are sorted, you can "easily" merge them together in a sorted fashion

9:53 AM
@Peilonrayz None. But the space requirement is the only difficult bit, the rest is trivial.
@Vogel612 The way I interpret it is that you are allowed to reuse the space in A, for example by shuffling the elements.

and the index you need to access in the sorted flattened matrix is already defined through the dimensions
@GarethRees okay, that would be doable. I'd probably shove elements to the end of the rows after "sorting" them to preserve the dimensions
but I don't like that requirement

But even if you are not allowed to modify A, there still a solution in O(1) space.

oh?

... and O((NM)^2) time!
But let's not get distracted trying to solve it ourselves. The point is, is the question on topic given that the OP intends to solve the problem, but has not yet succeeded in doing so?

@GarethRees Ok, I think we follow the same train of thought for memory as we do time, if the code works except for the limit then it's ok, AFAIK.

9:58 AM
^ that sounds reasonable

I can understand your distaste for this, as it's the entire point of the challenge. But I don't think it violates our current close reasons.

@GarethRees I agree that they haven't correctly solved the problem. Yet it seems they are not aware their solution allocates new memory

Fair enough.

I'm rather interested in the solution you found @GarethRees

So I'm doing some nasty things with named-pipes and threading if anyone wants to chime in.

<.< OS?

Windows of course.

^^
im currently a bit on the roll with win32 named pipes, so...

Well these are in .NET, but same construct. ;)

12:14 PM
@Vogel612 Ayup. I failed to review my review.

Basically, what happens is my program spawns a named pipe server, that will be a long-running service. This server will accept named-pipe connections from clients, and will do some work on behalf of the client. (In this case: download or upload a URL / data-point and return the response.)

Thanks for the improvements.

hmm.. sounds simple enough

The problem I hit was queuing: I don't want to send the request immediately, I want to put it in a queue.
That way, if 100 clients want to send a request out, only 16 will send at a time. This is to help fix some issues we've had with severe throttling and bottlenecking, and also help allow for us to do retries on Service Unavailable messages and such.
Right now, if the service we're communicating with is down, it just fails out on the user after a 5 minute timeout. I want to move that here, and also allow the user to get more immediate feedback.

er... so its basically this:
pipe-client <---> pipe-server <---> message queue <---> upload/download worker <---> remote server?

12:20 PM
Basically, yeah. The Pipe Server, Message Queue, and Upload / Download Worker are all the same service, but that's the idea.
Each of them are separate thread-groups in the service, so think of them as independent pieces.

i dont see the problem :/ the worker should have some kind of backlink to the pipe-client, so to me it seems that you should be able to send fail messages back
and once the worker determines theres a problem with the server, he could tell all messages in the queue, and retry to get a new connection established
