@CarySwoveland look more closely. The grades are averaged before being passed to letter_grade(). I fully expect that this is just a toy example though, and ties won't matter so much. Think 100 students with 20 grades each, and taking the top 10%. With that said though, it would really be better to take the top students by average, then convert to letter grade for display purposes. However, that is more of a topic for Code Review than here. — Zack 13 secs ago

Q: Simplifying python regex statements

Raphael MüllnerI have to add some extra logic to a couple of similar stored procedures (~80) on my DWH server. @200_success Yes. I suspect he's referring to an actual language, FBD (Function Block Diagram). It's one of the 5 standardized PLC languages.
If so, it should be on-topic. If it's simply a 'design', it's not.
The Function Block Diagram (FBD) is a graphical language for programmable logic controller design, that can describe the function between input variables and output variables. A function is described as a set of elementary blocks. Input and output variables are connected to blocks by connection lines. Inputs and outputs of the blocks are wired together with connection lines, or links. Single lines may be used to connect two logical points of the diagram: An input variable and an input of a block An output of a block and an input of another block An output of a block and an output variable T...

I eventually looked it up. It seems to be a real language, so I created a tag and reopened it.

Hint: tell the person giving such (sorry) insane instructions to get a grip on reality. Pushing all code into a single method is the absolute opposite of good practice. Of course, you want one method as entry point to the functionality, but that one method should happily use many other smaller helper methods. Rest assured: your code is not human comprehendable as it stands right now - and trying to force all of that into a single method is a good way to drive you crazy. In other words: if you would present the above in a code review, I would send you home ... — GhostCat 17 secs ago

Ah, the penny dropped for me in Haskell
A type signature like this:

`Applicative f => Bool -> f () -> f()`

is not equivalent to

`someApplicative.something(true, fn)`

But rather `something(applicativeOfF, true, fn)`

Basically the `=>` indicates that `f` must be an instance of `Applicative`
it all makes sense now

Right. That's how it's implemented in GHC, as far as I know.

It only made sense because I saw the type signature of (+).

You mean Num a => a -> a -> a?

Yeah
It helped me realise what that fat arrow means. It's been making me confused for hte past few days - and it's really hard to google
Usually documents have referred to it as a 'context' which is not at all helpful

Oh.
It's usually called a constraint.

10:26 AM
Plus if you combine that with other terminology I'm not used to, like Applicative, and it gets real confusing
Can you specify multiple constraints?
Num a, Applicative f => a -> f -> f a for example
Which probably wouldn't compile
Or, indeed, make sense

Yes, but you need parentheses. And you're missing a type after anf

ah, thanks :)

An example where you put multiple constraints on a single type variable is maybeSucc :: (Enum a, Eq a, Bounded a) => a -> Maybe a.
maybeSucc :: (Enum a, Eq a, Bounded a) => a -> Maybe a
maybeSucc x = if x == maxBound then Nothing else Just (succ x)
Note that GHC would infer that type automatically due to (==)'s, maxBound's and succ's types (succ :: Enum a => a -> a, maxBound :: Bounded a => a, (==) :: Eq a => a -> a -> Bool).

Yeah, I get you. If I were defining a utility function I'd still specify the types but otherwise i'd omit them, but I get what you're saying

This is perhaps more of a code review answer than an explanation of why you're having this issue. But my feeling is a SparkSesssion should probably be created once, in one place, and passed around as a constructor or method argument to all of the other places it is used. This has the added benefit of decreasing tight coupling and making the code much more easily testable. But without knowning a lot more about how your code is structured and why you're using a SparkSession in so many places and from different threads, it's hard to say if this is the best path for sure. — Joe K 55 secs ago
