Better question for Code Review. (1) What's the point of allowing info to be None if the function uses if info at the top? (2) In Python, it's if info is not None: not if info:. (3) if slug and elif name looks weird; is only one present in self._info? (4) Just return obj, the if obj is currently redundant. — ChrisP 54 secs ago

@Mast No, but it doesn't guarantee everything is disposed.

Why not?

The GC only runs when it needs to, I want it to run constantly.
@Mast It's just how .NET works.
It's not constantly garbage collected.

@DanPantry I believe the correct terminology is "Job Security"

The last codebase I worked on, we used string builders to render massive HTML blocks that would effectively be "pasted" into ASP sections... I don't think the architect knew what ASP was really for....

I've written a VHDL generator once in Python that consisted of something that mostly looked like a Stringbuilder pattern. It was freaking ugly, but it worked wonders for generating LUTs.
If I ever want to refactor that, I'll simply start over. Too much crap to sort out.

I had at least 3 occasions yesterday where I was told to store generated data inside of a text field in SQL and then asked why it wasn't automagically updating when the data was retrieved.
Even though the note could very well be generated from the data in the row on the fly - without having to store it - we have to store it, apparently
I was also asked to store dates in a format determined by the user preference in the DB.. I said no, obviously, as the dates could be in yyyy-mm-dd, dd/mm/yyyy, mm/dd/yyyy... etc

Many thanks to all of you. All of these worked well. I'll remember to put any questions for working code in "Code Review" from now on. — Antony Bagott 45 secs ago

VBA needs built-in lambdas for sorting
then I wouldn't be able to ramble about sorting algorithms for a while

Zak
@Pimgd VBA needs a lot of things ^^

@CaptainObvious also if anyone can tell me the sorting algorithm used for this

Zak
I just have a simple BubbleSort function for arrays and if it ever becomes a performance issue, *then* I'll look into getting a better sort function.

relevant snippet
Private Sub AlphebetizeSheets(ByVal myBook As Workbook)
    Dim i As Long
    Dim j As Long

    For i = 1 To myBook.Worksheets.Count
        For j = i To myBook.Worksheets.Count
            If UCase(myBook.Sheets(j).Name) < UCase(myBook.Sheets(i).Name) Then
                  myBook.Sheets(j).Move before:=Sheets(i)
             End If
        Next
    Next
    Application.ScreenUpdating = True
    Application.GetSaveAsFilename
End Sub

Zak
Bubble Sort

1:28 PM
really?

Zak
I think so.

no
that's bubble sort (says Wikipedia)
this algorithm instead swaps the 6 and 5 at the start,
but then compares 5 and 3, not 6 and 3

Zak
oh, right, it's doing a "find lowest value in list, move to first position, repeat for 2nd lowest etc." thing

no
That's selection sort
but here, the moment it spots "8, 5"
it swaps 8 and 5
then you have 5 8 2 ...
it compares 5 and 2 and makes 2 5 8 6...

Zak
that kinda is selection sort, just done iteratively, element by element, rather than scanning the whole list and making 1 substitution.

1:32 PM
I'm wondering whether there's a name for it.
Selection sort is always O((n*n)/2 + n/2)

Zak
Kind of a combination bubble/selection sort?

this is O((n*n)/2 + n/2) on basis of iterations alone, but then there's the insertions too, making it even worse
(Insertions are worse than swaps if it's a fixed array structure, but otherwise access would be non-linear and that'd make the algorithm also worse because it has a LOT of accesses)
meanwhile, I still think it's a bad idea to spend a lot of time on it, unless you're gonna have workbooks with a biiiig amount of sheets

@iwarv - you are missing the point, and it is that this site is not about advises on what is "the best way" do so something. There is another SX site - codereview, where you can post your code and ask about suggestions how to improve it. And besides, who said that 10 lines of code is twice as good as 20 lines of code? "optimal" is not a one dimensional metric. — ddriver 13 secs ago

Zak
Yeah, this is why I just stick to my bubble sort ^^

1:36 PM
I wish I'd be able to do what I call "functional sort"
sort(collection, comparison function)
It's functional because 1) it works and 2) it's in a functional programming style
(which is just a fancy way of saying comparison sort with a custom comparison function)
welp GTG back to work

@BenVlodgi How good is Unreal engine? I was considering taking a look at it once I was done learning Unity.
