Q: Returning a collection of unique elements: List<T> using Contains() or HashSet<T>?

JakeI'm writing a binary PowerShell module and have recently started to add wildcard support to some cmdlets. I'm not sure if I'm using an efficient way of creating the final collection of objects to write back to the pipeline. I'm wondering if it might be slightly more efficient to use a HashSet<T>...

@JohnnieW Indeed, for vectors it works just fine, and in fact adding 1 works fine for every iterator. However, std::next documents the intention better, it is as fast as adding 1, and can easily be searched for in a code review. — vsoftco 33 secs ago

I'm quite furious with myself.
I can't get Roslyn to build. I think I'm going to have to save the changed files, refork, import the files, and try again.

are you working on Roslyn?

Yes.
Well, sort of.

that's awesome
are you planning to do it regularly, or is it a one-time bug fix thing?

1:25 AM
I expressed interest in writing analyzers/code fixes for them. They saw my latest CR question (one of them reviewed it, actually), and asked (a different guy than the reviewer) if I was interested in implementing a related one for them.
I'm planning on doing it as much as possible, if I don't keep wrecking my build.

wow, that's cool

@Hosch250 you might want to set up a quick account on openhub.net and claim your work on Rubberduck ;-)

Is it like anyone else can steal it?

I've no idea
I stumbled on it googling "rubberduck vba"
and then there was a link to "manage this project"
so I created an account and claimed it and all my GitHub commits

wut how is the first one more relevant

1:35 AM
I had never heard of openhub until now.. I find it a bit scary that random sites "look" like they're hosting my code (you dig up a bit and it all links to GitHub, but still)

you shouldn't be making direct commits anyway, but whatever

er, why not?
SirPython is
There doesn't appear to be any formalised contributing model currently

in principal you should be doing pull requests based on content

That's only one potential model of contribution
And only works on GitHub (or similar tools)

meh, using branches and PRs makes for less issues in repos
@DanPantry *Git

Branches I can understand

11:54 AM
I forget you work with TFS ;p

No, PRs don't work in Git - at least, not easily
You can create patches using git am but you still have to email those and sort out the infrastructure
Unless you're using GitLab or Github, which will guide you through that process
Git itself has no notion of a PR or a MR
It just knows how to create email-style patches of git diffs
I work with TFS officially but I have used Git for years and I also use it on my local machine in work. I am not a git novice ;P
you are right though, I should have done that work on a branch.. of a branch

I've noticed BitBucket isn't a commonly discussed tool around here

It's kind of the red-headed step child.
As far as I remember it used to be proprietary
It has the nice benefit of offering private repos for free, but so does GitLab

We use BitBucket at work (because Jira)
I wonder whether I can get GitHub Desktop set up to BitBucket

Yep. Same reason my work want to move to BitBucket, actually
is also Because Jira.
IMO though this is a decision that to be doesn't make sense.
They moved to Slack.. Because Jira.
But Slack also has integration with VSO, which everyone has experience with

12:01 PM
Slack isn't Atlassian though

And all of our existing systems are in

HipChat is

*shrug*
A lot of the decisions being made currently are a bit questionable
For example, exactly that.. we want Jira and BitBucket but we don't want HipChat
Even though HipChat has integration with those systems, instead we want Slack, but the reason we want slack is because it integrates with Jira - which we don't use yet - even though Slack has integration with VSO
I'm all for change but the switch to BitBucket/Jira seems... weird to me.. it's almost as if it is wanted just because it isn't Microsoft ^^

Personally, I'm using GitHub pro, Slack (it has GitHub oneboxing) with IFTTT GitHub activity chat feeds (like Duga) and Google Calendar (with IFTTT GitHub issue adding)

You really like that IFTTT stuff

12:03 PM
There's so many ways to solve the same problem

I would use GitHub pro but damn it's so expensive for an individual for me to really justify fronting the cost
I don't use GitHub enough to pay for it just yet

It's not that expensive

Okay, $7 isn't terribly expensive
but that is $21. Which is a pizza.
Do i want a private repo which I hardly use.. or a pizza.
And when you put it that way...

your pizzas are 21$ wat

Does that include delivery though

No one is going to buy it anyway

12:05 PM
Because I like Hawaiian (oh, uh, pineapples are out of season maybe)
3

Delivery charges are free, but you can't deliver for orders below £12.
You can get one 12'' pizza with 4 toppings for £12.73, which will put you JUST above the delivery line
Not that I have put any serious thought into this, you understand.
But that's on a deal. When that deal isn't on, most pizzas will be £17.

I'm really tempted to tell my parents that I'm not feeling hungry and not finish dinner only to get a pizza delivered on April Fools

Oftentimes formulas in math have magic numbers with little to no meaning. For example, when calculating ELO, you create an adjusted score which is equal to 10**(score/400).
how do you properly name the magic numbers?

they're usually constants
so LIKE_THIS

right, but constants need names

What value is the constant?

I mean, what would you describe the value as?

3:20 PM
er...its meaning only comes from the formula

In that case, you probably shouldn't make it a constant.
Does anyone know where that article about not making everything a constant?

no, but there's a good CR post by @janos about making 100 a constant

if I use a null object in a conditional statement (if) trying to see if it is equal to another object (C#) am I going to get a NRE?
won't it just return false?

@Malachi if (potentiallyNull == something) should not throw a NRE

it should return false if it is null, right?

Hmm though if you call potentiallyNull.IsEqual(something) it changes I think
Depends what really happens in C#, I don't know enough about that I think

@skiwi not doing that, lol

3:49 PM
@skiwi That would likely throw an NRE.
@skiwi This would be fine, although I do not know what the result would be if something is null too.
If something is of the same type, it might return true. If it is not of the same type, it should return false`, but I don't know either way.

@Hosch250 But in C# you call .IsEqual() by doing ==, isn't it?

I don't know.

Does C# itself take care of if one of the operands is null

I would have to check, but I think it uses object's == when something is null, but that asks for the type's ==.

if the object is nullable I think it will allow one of them to be null
potentiallyNull.IsEqual(something) will only work if the object's IsEqual method is set up to handle Nulls....I think

3:54 PM
