@DanielMinnaar Yes, this is the workflow of TFVC Code Review. It is used to review the code before check in. You can refer to this link for details: visualstudio.com/en-us/docs/tfvc/get-code-reviewed-vs. The changes are stored in shelveset which is similar with changeset. And you can also suspend the work when you wait for the review feedback. So you don't need to worry about losing data. — Eddie - MSFT 38 secs ago

W .GroomIn February I was hired as a Software Developer Apprentice, I mainly code in c# which I have learnt on this apprenticeship. I am currently rewriting a programme the company currently uses. If I was like that, I would never have completed my internship, even.
There were at least two times in those 12 weeks, or so, that I didn't know what I was doing when I started the day, and felt like I knew less at the end of the day than at the start.
For me, though, if I say I'm going to do something, I'll do it.

Hah not even on purpose :P

Yeah yeah yeah :D Glad you're good and everything going well. I had couple stack overflows which is solved now. Some timer issues atm :D

I'm wondering if the use of a dictionary for all the data members of the class I'm working on is bad design
class RunLengthEncodedParser:
    """
    Parser for Run Length Encode (RLE) strings / files.
    More information: conwaylife.com/w/index.php?title=Run_Length_Encoded
    """
    def __init__(self, rle_string):
        self.rle_string = rle_string.strip()
        self.lines = rle_string.splitlines()
        self.fields = self.get_fields(self.lines)

    def get_fields(self, lines):
        """
        This method performs all the string parsing required to get the various
        fields of data into a dictionary to be used by the calling code.

I kinda like dictionaries but every time I use them I end up changing them with something else

Come to think of it there is not really a reason per se to use a dict, since this class isn't meant to format the data in a specific way for output, rather just to parse data fields from a string to make it accessible to the calling code
I used a dict, like you, because I like it, they're pretty, but they make the code probably more complicated than it needs to be

5:41 AM
exactly

Then I need getters for everything (which I may make anyways, eh) to just fetch each data field back from the dict

This question is better suited to Code Review. — kaylum 43 secs ago

Probably would be much simpler to just access the fields directly?
Since Python doesn't have private fields anyways, and we're all consenting adults here =)

emmm... as long as you don't post it on the code review :P people would pick on you : ))

Probably going to be rewritten in a more OOP language eventually, mostly just scripting/sketching

@Phrancis what's this ? ★¯_(ツ)_/¯â˜…

It's CA data (e.g. Conway's Game of Life pattern) read from a Run Length Encoded (*.rle) file/string

ohhh

The human friendly version is, well, for humans. The "usable" pattern is a 2d array containing a series of b (dead) and o (live) cells
This is a tiny one, with this raw format you can store huge patterns in just a regular string
Pretty huge class for Python, 132 LOC

8:36 AM
@Phrancis It's not that much. Maybe you should reconsider doing it in a non-OOP style. You'll reduce half of it :p
or at least 25%

I'm worried about having to parse the same raw string over and over though, instead of parsing it once and getting everything in one go
I'm sure it could be made a lot better though, some of the parsing is nested pretty deep (like 7 deep)

@Phrancis Well, post it on CR. I'm sure you'll get nice reviews ^^

I woke up this morning, saw this one and wanted to answer. Didn't spot the obvious mistake of comparing a date to the float 2016/11/20.

@MathiasEttinger I'm here. I see it is still comparing to 2016/11/20

So what now. OP provided a working version as an answer… Should we delete it and copy the content into the question?
Should I delete my own answer?

Q: How to make this code faster in python?

AnnabelleHere is a code I would need to make far more faster: it is made to analyse more than 3000 DNA sequences of more than 100 000 characters each. The matter is I have to compare it by pair, so that would be around 3000*2999/2 = 4498500 calculation and each takes 1 to 2 seconds... Could you think ...

This question belongs on Code Review as there is no immediate problem. However, as the Code Review guys have wisely barricaded themselves from accepting everyone-else's dross, that is not a reason for closure that I can specify. So I have just voted it as being off-topic for Stack Overflow. — Borodin 55 secs ago

pastebin.com/H0iAkJSb this code is terrible, right?

@SimonForsberg Yuck.
@CaptainObvious If it's not working properly, don't post it.

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it belongs on the Code Review board. — Bob Gilmore 36 secs ago
@BobGilmore No! Code Review is not a debugging service. Aside from that, it's stripped from it's context and would make a lousy question at Code Review. Please take a look at their help centre. — Mast 51 secs ago
@Borodin Based on this Code Review meta post I wouldn't be surprised if they refuse migration. This question belongs on SO as far as they're concerned. — Zaid 32 secs ago

Classes cancelled due to bad weather today. Does that mean I can postpone my homework?

no.

@Hosch250 No.
You can, however, postpone going outside.

@Sumurai8 But that's just what I want to do.
Also, the bad weather isn't down here--it is some 300 miles away up north.

In that case you can do your homework outside.

Too cold to just sit around. I want to go on a long walk.
Oh well, maybe in a couple days.
Or maybe not, since the city sprayed the shoe-eating chemicals on the road.

4:44 PM
@Hosch250 That's probably a good idea anyway if you don't feel like doing the homework

With homework I found that postponing it only made things worse. Luckily, homework can be planned, so I tend to plan in days off too.

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because this question should be on CodeReview SE — Fred Larson 52 secs ago
@Borodin to follow up, I seriously had no clue Code Review even existed. Thank you for letting me know about it. There are so many stackexchange sites, I feel really swamped, but that is useful for me going forward because I know it's something where I make big mistakes. — aschultz 26 secs ago

@Hosch250 That question turned into a mess. I'm not sure it should've been handled the way it did, somewhere in that list of edits it probably went against intent.

4:57 PM
Yeah, I saw there was a discussion above.

@FredLarson That's still not a valid close reason. Close if it's off-topic here, it's quite irrelevant whether it's on-topic somewhere else, Code Review or elsewhere. — Mast 6 secs ago

First, it was off-topic, then they posted their on-topic code as an answer.
A few users and a mod moved the answer code into the question, and removed the answer.
Then I found it in the review queue for reopening, removed the off-topic part of the question to prevent further confusion and voted to reopen.

@Mast I think that's quite pretentious, it's just a hint to the op that they'd have better luck posting on CodeReview. — George 42 secs ago

@SimonForsberg Well... yeah, that's correct :D

@George That hint was already provided by Algirdas. Closing it as off-topic because it might be on-topic somewhere else is a bogus practice and should cease. — Mast 10 secs ago
@Hosch250 I'm not saying you did anything wrong. But the revision history looks messy at best.

@Incomputable Fair point.

@Sumurai8 you won't be able to sleep after the nightmare you will see. Though I wouldn't say it is overly complex, just lots of repetition and may be not so idiomatic (it is Qt). I'll perform first iteration of upgrades and post it here
I actually got surprised how not intuitive interface can be. I think that Qt is a company that could win a prize on the most weird interfaces ever created

Well, I have had my fair share of nightmares after seeing a post about some jQuery extension that used comma's and semicolons interchangeably.

Then it messed with indentation a bit

or if it could be improved
