@Mast this helps to declutter code when you are dealing with objects that could be null. imagine what that code would look like if it had to be written without the Null Coalesce and DeReference

@Malachi Are you talking about Java?

if all my SQL Answers got one upvote I would get the Silver badge
@skiwi no, I was talking about C#. were you guys talking about Java?

@Malachi No, but you implied that some code would look like a mess without null coalesce and null propagating, aka Java

or C#
return (value as HeroClass)?.Name ?? string.Empty; would be valid C# like this return (HeroClass)value?.Name ?? string.Empty; I believe.
at first I thought it was C#
but the value as HeroClass is Java now that I look at it again
either way, imagine the code without these operators

3:27 PM
@Malachi that might cause casting exceptions
as is not Java, it's C#

Do you have any tips for implementing my own user control that I want to include several times in one of my views? With different parameters
I'm going down the DependencyProperty and code-behind route now for that thing, though the rest of my application is written using MVVM

Sure.
First, create a MyUserControl.xaml page. It will automatically create a code-behind page.

@Hosch250 @JeroenVannevel already gave me the head slap on that...lol

@Hosch250 It's not wrong to not use MVVM then?

@skiwi It's good to use MVVM, as much as you can.

Is there a way to change the value of readonly property (without using a readonly backing field) with reflection ?

4:47 PM
doubt it
the backing property (yes, there still is one) has its name autogenerated
you can't request what you don't know

Well, it is generated by specific rules, so you usually do know it. But they make it an unprintable name.

you can request the property getter though (If the property is Value, the getter is a method named get_Value) and perhaps rewrite the IL but I'm not 100% sure

Also I'm disappointed it went unanswered so long.
@denis No problem. I haven't had time to really dig into the C# zombies, I'm trying to knock them out one-by-one as of late.

@EBrown it was answered but I deleted the answer for not being upvoted :P

@t3chb0t Ah, I don't see those.

@EBrown 1295 rep to go.

@Mast Yeah, that's a lot.

@Hosch250 you've removed my spongebob...
why do you care about deleted posts?

6:26 PM
Once you release an answer to the public domain, there's a lot of people who agree you shouldn't pull it back unless you got a very good reason to.
If your answer doesn't receive upvotes, consider improving it next time.
That will have 2 benefits.
1) People encountering the answer are more likely to upvote it.

@Mast I cannot, I'm out of deletes for today

It's really demotivating to kill zombies though.
You never really get the reward from them that you do from the HNQ questions.
(TBH that's why I haven't started until now.)

2) The question will be put back into the active pool, leading to more people encountering them. Re-inforcing 1).
Also, our answered rate has been dropping. So I'd highly recommend against deleting answers 'just because they didn't get upvotes'.

@Mast Answer rate has gone up (slightly) in the last few days.

@Mast maybe, I don't remember anymore

But if so many of your answers get no upvotes, how about improving the quality of your answers instead of going for quantity @t3chb0t
@EBrown He should get an e-mail once an answer is posted though.

lol you can get sweaters for your drones

@Mast But the question is, will (s)he see it? Will (s)he care?
> Last seen Dec 23 at 15:02
That's the same user on SO.
I just have a feeling we lose many quality users due to zombies.

What if moderators can award an accepted answer for those "zombie" questions ?

@DanLyons Now I'm waiting for a video of somebody pulling a sweater over the propeller.

@t3chb0t Because it made the post worse than just leaving the original, and people above a certain rep can still see it.

6:34 PM
Maybe that should be a thing

@denis Has already been suggested on multiple sites, not going to happen.

@denis I think that's a potentially dangerous idea.
I think it would be beneficial in some cases, but be a detriment in others.

@EBrown Who knows.

Too bad they don't trust the moderators enough ..

Anyway, he did accept it.

6:35 PM
@Mast I don't but I can see a problem with it.

@denis No offence to the moderators, but we shouldn't trust the moderators that much.

What if that solution doesn't help the OP because of reason _______?

Point @EBrown

Personally, I think the community should reward zombie kills with the occasional up vote.
6

@EBrown We used to do that, you know.
Pre-graduation.

6:36 PM
We should start pimping again.
If nothing else just to get awareness of the question out.
Hmmm...I have an interesting idea.

Only on old zombies though, if we start pimping every answer we post, the chat gets flooded.
Say 5+ days old questions or so.
Which didn't have an answer before.

@Mast I'd say 5+ months.

pulls some random number out of his behind

I never use my vote allowance (I don't have enough time to read through enough questions to do so), so I think what I'm going to do is create a chat-bot (non-responsive) that you can ping to suggest potential questions for me to use my votes on.

haha

6:38 PM
I won't auto-vote, that can be abused.

@Mast Chat being flooded for once wouldn't be a bad thing...

I have some experience with mutexes in C++, but recursive? No way.

@Morwenn We need you! :)
Hah, my database proves useful again. ;)
@t3chb0t Huh, which one was that?

Chat search is just as good.

I usually only want 2-3 up votes per answer anyway.
@Hosch250 I can be, but it doesn't find the absolute most recent message from that user very easily.

It doesn't matter if you just want them to get pinged.

7:03 PM
I literally have a script on my SQL server that I use for this.
USE StackExchangeChatLogTest

DECLARE @Name AS VARCHAR(32) = 'Morwenn'

SELECT TOP 10 *
FROM dbo.ChatMessages
INNER JOIN dbo.Users ON UserId = dbo.Users.Id
WHERE Names LIKE CONCAT('%', @Name, '%')
ORDER BY dbo.ChatMessages.Id DESC
Should get that reviewed.

Btw has anyone played around with System.Reflection.Emit.DynamicMethod ?

Hmmmm, I'm not sure whether to use those literals. 0 is a clear enough starting index.

I should actually try to build your project before I rewrite minimax.
I'll do that tonight.

I fixed some of it. Some of the naming is off (not such a big deal). Lots of the expected types are off.
Some of the variables don't even exist, which is where I'm kind of stuck.

Let me see if I can fix it quick.

You are using Option<float> and Move interchangeably.

@Hosch250 have you written anything in IL ? I'm stuck, trying to create methods dynamically.

Not really.
TBH, I would try to avoid dong that.

I do got an alternative in mind maybe I should do that, it's way too complex and from the things I've read it's really inefficient.

Are you crazy?! That involves doing math, like, in your brain. This is why we invented computers, so we could avoid doing stuff like that. — Luke Sampson Jun 2 '11 at 1:31

Reading the code, there are some slight details that could be improved and that I understand, but it isn't worth a bounty at all.

7:33 PM
@Morwenn It's better than keeping the question a zombie.
Also, perhaps it will inspire somebody else to write a better answer.

For the site maybe, but not really for the question itself.
It would prbably prevent actually good answers from ever happening.
For example, I almost never look at answered questions.

In this case, nobody looks at it anymore.
If you can provide helpful advice to the OP, do it.

I sometimes look at top unanswered C++ questions, and this one appears.
Seriously, the few pieces of advice I have really aren't worth it. And knowing Emily, she woudn't really care, she's probably way more interested into actual answers about the mutex structure itself.

Would it be very naughty to ping Loki?

You could try.

@Vogel612 Yes, they're called IIFE IIRC.
An immediately-invoked function expression (or IIFE, pronounced "iffy") is a JavaScript programming language idiom which produces a lexical scope using JavaScript's function scoping. Immediately-invoked function expressions can be used to avoid variable hoisting from within blocks, protect against polluting the global environment and simultaneously allow public access to methods while retaining privacy for variables defined within the function. This concept has been referred to as a self-executing anonymous function, but Ben Alman introduced the term IIFE as a more semantically accurate term for...
