Q: Max contiguous slice in Ruby

500_errorI need to compute the max contiguous slice in an array. I wrote this function, but I am not sure if it is correct or I am missing edge cases. I ran several cases. def max_slice(a) max_start,max_end = 0,0 largest_sum = 0 curr_start,curr_end = 0,0 curr_sum = 0 for i in 0..a.length-1 ...

@IsmaelMiguel I guess some people just like pissing off others. Then again, many regulars happily throw flags their way while mods obliterate them.

Possibly. I still don't have Marshal on SU, though, but I am working on it.

Tomorrow morning at 10AM EDT (14:00 UTC), we will begin moving all services from our New York data center to Denver, CO. Last Saturday was the read-only test in preparation for this move. It’s a fire sale and everything must go! The major user-facing services that will be involved in the move are: All Q&A Sites (including Stack Overflow) Stack Overflow CareersChatBlogsStack Exchange APIstac

Heads up: we will be doing a failover of all services to our DR data center tomorrow to prep for network maintenance. http://stackstatus.net/post/126135656099/data-center-failover-august-8-2015

Q: Generating 3D voxel terrain with Perlin Noise

Ethan BierleinI've created this simple 3D voxel terrain generator using Perlin Noise. I have a few concerns about it though. Is there any way to make it more performant? @rolfl: Oh, I just remembered that you wanted me to remind you about IBM jobs! I remembered as soon as I got an email from Glassdoor regarding IBM jobs.

Sorry i could not help laughing throughout your post. The only thing i have to disagree with is changing Choice to a nullable type too much nullable type casting yo. Explain why Game_Info should be a class and why rock, paper, scissor variables should be taken out. You're forgetting i am a freaking 14 year old when i come to this code later on i am sure it's simple enough for me to figure out what it does. — fun Tertain 13 mins ago
wot
I'm 14 and I don't talk like that.
I also don't put comments like this in my code:
// DEEEEEEEZ NUUUTS

The variables are just redundant, they add an unneeded layer of indirection vs. using the plain enum values. Game_Info being a mutable struct defies all best practices about value types, and ignoring that will inevitably come and bite you somewhere, some day. As for the nullable, it's semantically what's right to do (absence of a meaningful value is a null value, not some "special" valid value), and the worries about too much casting are injustified, since Nullable<T> has implicit conversion to T, so there's no need to explicitly cast anything. Welcome to CR, glad you enjoyed! — Mat's Mug ♦ 47 secs ago

Depending on how it plays out, we may actually get a fifth moderator without another election round — Vogel612 13 hours ago
That rumour has been around for a while, but as far as I know it could take as long as it took us to graduate (if we actually did, the 'beta' is still in our title bar) to get a 5th moderator (if we get one at all).
Not to offend anyone, but SE's decision cycle is very unpredictable and usually slow (lately).

Good morning everybody.

Not so good over here, but still

I woke up at 5am with a very annoying pain
Then my boss called me 4 times at 9am

10:42 AM
The kind of day nobody likes.

I woke up at 10 and couldn't sleep anymore
Exactly

I went to sleep at 6 a.m. We had a concert last night and I had to drive home, which took between 1h30 and 2h. Not what I like the most, but at least I got to wake up at home.

Which in itself is already great

Yes.

But well, not everything is bad here. At least I have pizza for breakfast

10:46 AM
Now I have to bake cakes. A pandanus financier and a chocolate mousse pie.
Pizza for breakfast? Wow, no thanks. I eat coffee for breakfast :o

You eat coffee? Like, the coffee beans?

Nah, it was just a way to say that I hardly ever eat anything for breakfast, but I drink coffee :)

I don't drink coffee because I don't have any and because I'm scared as f*ck of the stove
Otherwise, I would make myself a coffee

^ Forget that actually, I misread a word xD

Don't worry
But still applies
Some just say I'm a giant coward. But when you see drops of oil at 180ºc shooting out of a frying pan, you will run away too

I read "store" at first, which kind of changes the meaning of the sentence.
Haha, I remember once when my mushroom burnt and there was a one-meter flame above :D

I remember when I was 5 and my mother threw a fish from the frying pan to my face, because I was too close to the stove

@EthanBierlein Buyone one new router will be a good idea and a PITA.
You will need the PPPoE key and username

Back
My laptop just bluescreened on me
And my phone connects to the internet just fine, so it may be an issue with my laptop.

Windows 10?
Or Vista?

That's normal
Uninstall the drivers, disable the device, reboot, reactivate the device, reboot and should be ok

2:37 PM
Mhm. I can't help but feel that my connectivity issues are somehow related to the bluescreen
anways, brb, time to to eat

Alright
You can try to re-install the chipset drivers
LOL
I was acused of code golfing!
How is that even golfed!?

Apparently the site is now in "read-only" mode.

Well, there's nothing bad with golfing when you can also call it DRY.

But it isn't golfed
Not even close

What I mean is that some people call "golfing" the act of reducing the code size.

2:50 PM
Oh, yeah

You proposed to reduce the code size, but that's only a side effect of DRY in your case.

NOOO, SE is offline!

@Morwenn This is the same code, golfed: r=f=>f.toLowerCase().replace(/[^a-z\d]/g,'').split('').sort().join(''),t=this,t‌‌.isAnagram=f(t.word1)==f(t.word2); (ES6)
Lets see if he can spot the diferences
@EthanBierlein StackOverflow is in read-only

We are moving services over to Denver starting now - Chat is first up.

The site is back!
And it isn't on read-only!!!

Huh, one of my networking drivers was disabled
Except my internet still isn't working

Maybe it's the firewire port?

No idea

Do you accept an advice?

sure
God, why is my wireless network adapter driver still disabled

3:15 PM
Look up a better laptop
Well, that is a mistery

The laptop is fine
And my internet connection was fine before windows 10

@Malachi it cool with you if I go ahead and award the bounty to that answer?

There's lots of people complaining about wireless problems

Yeah, except none of those solutions work for me
Stupid. Fucking. Laptop.
This is the third time today that the damn thing has bluescreened

Then it must be a problem with windows

3:22 PM
The bluescreen only happens when I try to re-enable my wireless network adapter driver
I get the system error SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (Qcamain10x64.sys)

Try to uninstall the drivers
Don't re-enable them

If I uninstall then then I won't get any wireless connection. At all.

I know
Try to download the drivers first, if you have connection

i don't have a connection though
Meh, I might just take this to a professional, rather than trying to do it myself. I'm really starting to get out of my comfort zone here.

:/ I'm not super-expert in that area, but what I'm saying usually fixes driver problems
And yes, it's also part of my work

3:31 PM
Wait, so removing a driver fixes the problem? How does that work?

Ugh, I let my dough burn, stupid me -_______-
Too bad. That will be chocolate mousse without a supporting pie.

At least it's not a laptop with a broken network driver.
I'd take a chocolate mousse without a pie over that any day.

@EthanBierlein Removing the bad drivers and re-installing the drivers, downloaded from the official website (either the manufacturer of your laptop or of the device) usually fixes problems

This question should be for CodeReview. Not StackOverFlow. — Script47 7 secs ago

Well, yeah, I figured, but I don't have an internet connection, so I can't install a fresh driver.

3:38 PM
Can you try to download to your cellphone and send it over bluetooth/usb?

I have an iPhone. That would never work. xD

I feel sorry for you :/
600€ for a phone that can't send a photo over bluetooth, while a 30€ can
You can try over cable?

No idea. Maybe. I think my laptop can do cable connection, but I'm pretty sure I don't have one set up.

You just need an RJ45 cable connected to the router and you are done

Although I don't look at the degree of candidates, I'm not your typical hiring guy

5:26 PM
The Stack Exchange Data Explorer is back online from Denver.

to the clueless HR guy, BS is critical
4

That's another problem too: most other programmers I know who hire programmers are completely clueless when it comes to evaluating candidates. They don't know what they are doing. They could know, if they researched it a little bit
But I digress....

> "Is string a value or a reference type?" -- you'd be surprised at the answers

@janos Aren't they all...

@RubberDuck just like the clueless HR guy filtered you out, you also filtered them out. You really don't want to work at a place where they don't recognize the value of your contributions. It's good to be picky
dinner time

5:32 PM
I'm currently looking for a new gig, too many crazy HR people out there.

@Mat'sMug I found the GIF version of that a while back, reminded me of lots of things but debugging didn't come to mind.
Refactoring did...

lol

@janos Ain't that the truth? Too many people doing it for the paycheck IMO. That's on huge reason legacy code bases are a nightmare.

also, too many supervisors that "just want to get it done" and couldn't care less about clean code

5:38 PM
@Mat'sMug I actually stumbled on that one a bit, but it was phrased a bit differently.

@janos Too many of those at my previous gig, one of the main reasons I didn't stay.

Oh. I remember now.
> What's the difference between a value and a reference type in .Net?

I think when people work in open-source projects, it shows they love coding, rather than just doing it for the paycheck

I knew that everything inherited from object, and I couldn't remember more under the pressure of the interview.
@Phrancis that. So much that.

@RubberDuck they just wanted to hear "value type goes on stack, reference type goes on heap" - and half of 'em have no clue what the heap/stack is

5:39 PM
(you could also infer from me that I love coding CSS, because I do it in my free time... scary)

Probably, but the difference in value semantics vs reference semantics is more important IMO.

totally

Such a stupid question to trip on too. I knew the answer.

@Phrancis In that case, would one-man hobby projects count the same?

@Mast I don't see why not!

5:42 PM
@Mast As far as the passion goes, yes.
But there are lots of other things working on a team project teaches you that a hobby project won't.
Speaking of team projects.... I should probably be fixing bugs right now...

Waits for Mug to star that ^

:)

I've seen professional projects which were lousier set-up than hobby projects, but I get your point. In general, it's like that.

I know I've been a bit absentee @Mat'sMug. I'm pretty settled into the new job now though. I'll be back at it soon. I promise.

@RubberDuck it's ok, I'm busy stirring the shit out of the whole architecture
2

@Mast good grief you should see the stuff I've seen at work.

5:45 PM
Browser-based client is coming along good! Thanks to SirPython for making API 2.0 today! http://bit.ly/1MTZKfS

Overlapping and hiding controls instead of creating new ones, thousands of lines of code (the whole app) shoved into one form's code behind file... insanity

Q: Java DFS Implementation that tracks time and parent node

inquisitorI have a project where I'm to implement a DFS using a direct graph. The implementation should print the currently visited vertex, the parent (the node from which the current node was reached), and the discovery and finish time for each node. Using these graph values: int[] vertices = {1,2,3,4,5...

@RubberDuck speaking of architecture... I'm looking for where the code pane context menu is being initialized... and I can't find it. that cleanup is waaaaay past due...

I should probably either join or create a team project. Last such project I was part of was a couple of years ago.

The code pane context?

5:52 PM
context menu
code pane, context menu
the one that shows up when you right-click a code pane

Oh.... I have no idea. That's bad isn't it?

lol yeah... there's a class for the form designer context menu though
oh wow
got it
it's in... RefactorMenu.cs
in InitializeRefactorContextMenu()
such ad-hoc, much working code
aaaand.. that's where there's this comment:
//todo: untangle that mess...
