Greetings

Greetings
So, I'm modifying that star-watcher script into something a little larger
and it sends an event everytime something happens in here
but, the MessageReply event is sent 8+ times
SE blocks duplicate messages, but, it feels wrong to try and post each one and hit an error.

The what?

sorry, which line are you confused at?

and on the other hand there's a Utility method you could call like: DateUtil.getDate(locale, year, month, day, DateUtil.DAY_END);

the utility method or the black magic? (spoiler: I didn't do neither)

The black magic of obscurity

lost to history.. somewhen two years ago a failed SVN copy killed the history for the git migration tool

That sucks a lot

I've had worse.. it's just mildly weird.

Mildly?
Well
When compared to some PHP stuff, it is not so weird
(I'm guilty of some BAD PHP code)

A: Performance Byte[] to Generic

EBrownFirst, you seem to have a minor typo on this line: if (type == typeof(ushort)) return BitConverter.ToUInt32(bytes, offset).As<T>(); That should be: if (type == typeof(ushort)) return BitConverter.ToUInt16(bytes, offset).As<T>(); Just as well, you have a bug in here that is a pretty big one ...

Pretty interesting explanation on converting basic generic types with BitConverter and casting.

@Duga Does @Duga normally do repo posts here?

Speaking of this, I do see that this is getting to be a popular idea. Should I refine the rules as I see fit? Maybe create the base input file and expected output? How much responsibility do I have to make sure this runs smoothly? :) — Carl 33 secs ago
@Mat'sMug you might want to input on that ^^
@Quill it watches some users to see when they create a new repo

@SimonAndréForsberg Fair enough.

@EBrown How do I +2 on it?

@IsmaelMiguel You don't.

Typically we leave the specs as open-ended as possible, so as to not limit languages, creativity and required skills - basically these "challenges" are merely an inspiration for something to implement and put up for review, nothing with hard specs or anything. — Mat's Mug ♦ 23 secs ago

I meant September's challenge
Still 8-8?

@IsmaelMiguel Celebrating half years now too, huh?

No.
12/8/7, I think.

3:16 PM
@skiwi Not celebrating. There's nothing good on birthdays

Well, in that case you could celebrate that you have one less year of having no-good days left.

That's a good idea

SE should remove vote buttons from your own questions/answers.

No better way to celebrate than buying a bottle of black vodka and mixing it with coke (the drink)
@EBrown Yeah, and it should only display the votes. I think there was a feature request for that

@EBrown IIRC that's been discussed already

Q: Remove vote UI elements beside own question and answer posts

akarnokdCurrently, the system makes you think you can upvote/downvote your own question/answer but then you get notified that you can't. Why have the up/down vote buttons there then? @EBrown you won't get a null there I think. either you have an instance, or you have an InvalidCastException (or NullReferenceException) - if you need to null-check, try a soft-cast with as instead

Every single action was described and anyone could read it
If you do it, I'll +1 that question

I don't know if it even has comments.
> Comments
Since the word "ook" can convey entire ideas, emotions, and abstract thoughts depending on the nuances of inflection, Ook! has no need of comments. The code itself serves perfectly well to describe in detail what it does and how it does it. Provided you are an orang-utan.

@Hosch250 Ook is identical to Brainfuck, really.

and brutally more confusing
I can convert my Brainfuck code to Ook and if you write Ook, you can convert it to Brainfuck.

@SimonAndréForsberg Well... We are quite limited. You have 2 paper sheets. Write an Ook code that will execute perfectly. You have a Brainfuck version and the translation table. Good luck
@Duga That code looks scary AF!

@IsmaelMiguel In what way are we limited? If you have a Brainfuck version, write a Java program or whatever-program and convert it.

@SimonAndréForsberg "You have 2 paper sheets."

5:27 PM
No, I don't have 2 paper sheets.

Well, it was an hypothetical example to show that is really is "some" values of "can"

well, considering the actual limits that we already have and not imposing additional ones for no reason...
@Hosch250 If you would decide to actually write it in Ook, you'd better make it a really good quality question. But personally, I think it's better to write it in BF.

Do I even want to know what Ook is?

5:59 PM
@IsmaelMiguel Bresenham Line Drawing Algorithm is a "classic" well-defined problem. It's not closable for being Unclear. If you want context, leave a comment asking for whatever specific information you want to know.
That would be more helpful.

@200_success Indeed, most of the context is included simply with the use of the appropriate title.

@200_success I said "seems fit". I didn't say "HAMMER IT!".
I won't close-vote like a maniac just because

Opened questions are great
Those generate answers
Those produce visibility and may push a question to be shown on Hot

of course a comment asking OP to clarify which part of their wall-of-code they're more worried about, is always welcome

Which means that more users may come to the site

@EthanBierlein You mean monking?

@EBrown sure

@Mast Monknoon.

If you're purely wanting a review, this isn't the right site for that. Head on over to codereview.stackexchange.com — Edd 6 secs ago

@Duga we're pure

@Mat'sMug Should I use the fields, or the properties in member methods? I.e. public static Vector2 operator +(Vector2 v1, Vector2 v2) { return new Vector2(v1._x + v2._x, v1._y + v2._y); } or public static Vector2 operator +(Vector2 v1, Vector2 v2) { return new Vector2(v1.X + v2.X, v1.Y + v2.Y); }?

@Edd codereview.SE is for code that already compiles. — gla3dr 21 secs ago

6:13 PM
The difference being return new Vector2(v1._x + v2._X, v1._y + v2._y); vs return new Vector2(v1.X + v2.X, v1.Y + v2.Y);

I tend to use the backing field all the time, leaving getters/setters for public consumption.

Alright.

Well, for one thing, this won't compile in its current state. — gla3dr 5 mins ago

@Mast Curious if that guy is just being pedantic about the fact that it's not the complete class.
Though it seems one of the methods is missing a closing brace.

@EBrown hold on here.. you're accessing private fields of another instance?

6:15 PM
@Mat'sMug Yeah.

@EBrown Broken is broken.

ah. that I don't do

@Mat'sMug Aha! Thanks! :) Still putting it up for review but I'll make that change right now. :)
But in public override string ToString() { return "(" + _x + "," + _y + ")"; } it is acceptable?

I'd write that. also it'd look cleaner as return string.Format("({0},{1})",_x,_y);

@Mat'sMug Nothing wrong with that! :)

6:17 PM
@Mat'sMug Ah yes, I should change that as well. :)

@SimonAndréForsberg not because it compiles that it's pretty :p

still nothing wrong with that :)

Also, what would you do for a GetHashCode on a struct that has two int fields?

@EBrown what @SimonAndréForsberg is saying is that there's technically nothing wrong with accessing the private fields of another instance of the same type. My take on that is that it's violating encapsulation, but other religions have other beliefs ;-)

@Mat'sMug Well, I think these actually need to be auto-implemented anyway.

A: What is the best algorithm for an overridden System.Object.GetHashCode?

Jon SkeetI usually go with something like the implementation given in Josh Bloch's fabulous Effective Java. It's fast and creates a pretty good hash which is unlikely to cause collisions. UfxI need to send and receive data. Here is solution for my original problem. I want to know how safe my finished code is and how I can improve it. Here is my first try. Now I need to get review for my new code. void sslWrite(SSL *ssl, const void *buf, unsigned size) { int writedTotal = 0; ...

Think I'm going the FNV route.
I only have two properties on this class, which are both int types.

@EBrown just make sure (42,24) doesn't yield the same hash code as (24,42) and you should be good :)

@Mat'sMug Heh, we can only hope. :)
Should a Vector2/Vector2F be mutable?
My gut says no...
But my heart says yes...
Good thing I went through this code: return new Vector2F(v1._x - v2.X, v1._y - v2.Y);

6:39 PM
@EBrown if it's a struct and it's mutable, you're asking for trouble

@Mat'sMug Yeah, I had a method in my Vector2 struct that was called Offset which would modify the current Vector2.

noooooo

I removed it...lol

well, don't remove it - just make it return a new vector2

That's what I have Vector2.Add for.

Ismael Miguel Disclaimer: I know nothing of C++, but I'll help you as much as I can. Overall, your code looks good. A+ for readability! Probably a missing spot somewhere, but no biggy. @Mast He doesn't know. ;)

@Mast 100% sure it may compile

Q: Small PHP-MVC system (for personal learning / use)

MathlightI've made an "simple" / "small" MVC-like PHP system. I've used some code of an project I used before and ask questions about it back then to. The thing is, it works (the admin part to begin with), but I'm not sure about the quality of the code. I know that there are mainly no comments, but they ...

Q: Simple Vector2 structures (and interface)

EBrownI built a couple Vector2 structures (Vector2 and Vector2F) for use with a particular project, so I'm mostly requesting best practices here. The biggest concern is that I'm not making any assumptions I shouldn't be. I would like any comments that are relevant on the interface and whether it's too...

@Mast Well, it has a trenary operator, right? (ignoring the misspelling)
That was the only change I did

@IsmaelMiguel Yes, C++ does have a ternary operator.

Instead of 2 sparse functions, I've joined them and 'patched' it
@EthanBierlein Then it should compile
It it doesn't, it's because I've missed a dot or a repeated letter

It looks good enough to me.
I didn't remember studying made me so tired. I must be going on cognitive overload.

You should take a rest and get a drink

I've hardly been up for a couple hours, I've been working at my school (read a couple chapters in as many textbooks, did some internet research), and I picked up a raging headache.
I'm going to take my dog on a walk.
See you later.

Have fun

@IsmaelMiguel Drinking and studying does not always go well together. Very situational.
