@Quill Awful.

just call greatGreatGreatGrandParent()

pffft asked yesterday a test server for new project, and I wanted it today

@chillworld meh....

still, no test server, waiting for some budget number :s
I wanted to improve our archtype for the single sign on with it
so I had a clean project from the archtype

9:17 AM
@chillworld maybe you should request your server earlier then...
setting up the server may not take all that long if your sysadmins are capable enough and have a proper server-cluster / hypervisor
but usually the business around this takes time to "authorize" things like that.
2

@Vogel612 indeed I should request it earlier
last week they told me about the new project, so I let already set-up the repo, Hudson,... but not yet the server
I should have done that then also (but I didn't expect that debugging the single sign on for special char's was on the menu)

no use throwing a trantrum now, right? ;)

problem single sign on is : accountéà.t comes in the entry point of our applications as account????.t (from Kerberos)

well.. get your encoding cleaned up.

mine? it's the arch type, not under mine watch ;)

9:22 AM
it's not that hard to make applications use something like UTF-8 throughout the whole app.
well for new projects that is..

For existing projects that run for years it's probably not fun...

the arch type here is also a project where people are put on
but because I have an application under mine watch where almost every LDAP user has contact with, they ask me to check and try finding solution to it
and actually I don't care if I have to, but I'm always eager to start ^^

Python 3 looks cool, but it's an inconsistent mess

@skiwi Which is why I stick to 2

@zloidooraque Still 5 questions in one is obviously not a proper Stack Overflow way as AlexeyLevenkov has already mentioned. You should consider concentrating on one topic at a time. And some of your questions can actually be a better fit for Programmers or CodeReview. Just don't ask about best practices on programmers - they are no less off-topic there than they are here. — Eugene Podskal 10 secs ago
I think you wanted codereview.stackexchange.com, if your code is tested and working correctly. If not, please clarify the problem and cut the code down to a minimal example - what exactly does "I got it to work (well, sort of)" mean? — jonrsharpe 44 secs ago

NJMRI was assigned a task to fix the SQL injection flaw reported by a code analysis tool and I am not the original author of the code and I do have fair amount of knowledge on SQL. the recommendations are really getting better..

@Quill Well, they have on advantage. Over here, kids that age just start to learn English. Over there they don't need those lessons as extra so they can put something else up.
Although, coding at that age, I had no idea what I was doing at 11. I just hacked stuff together and as long as it worked it was fine by me.

@Quill I think 11 is too early.
well for "real coding" that is

9:59 AM
@Vogel612 I disagree

It starts at Scratch at 8ish so

it might be interesting to use these .. drag & drop coding ideas, but "real coding"...

They're supposed to be learning Java (not script) at 11

@Quill Scratch is, ehm, let's just say I'd prefer everyone started at C++. It's an easy language to get the basics.

hmm...

9:59 AM
or some other Fundamental programming language
@Mast They're more pushing away from the C based languages and towards Java

If your a wizzkid in programming I think you could start really early

After that, learn them Python. But learning Python without prior knowledge of other languages might pose a problem in the long run. People won't understand what happens under the hood.

Java at 11 is too hard. then again JAVA definitely isn't

Even most on university don't how to do "real coding"
4

^^that
you can't expect elementary kids to learn "coding" so they can get jobs of the future

10:01 AM
Won't starting earlier accelerate the problem instead of the solution?

because "coding" and coding are so extremely different

@Vogel612 if your kid is 8 and want to learn programming, you teach it no?
and you teach it like you code

@chillworld yes, I'd do that

Thanks for your comment. Whether the code is working or not, is a matter of definition. But yes, it runs (though not the way I want it to). Perhaps I can try codereview, but I know the code is very badly written. Don't want to piss people off. I just recently starting coding, and I know there's tons of material to learn and digest. I try to read about coding, but a lot of times I don't want to read, I want to write, experiment, try out things. Oh, well. Thanks againg. — Newless_Cluebie 6 secs ago

but I wouldn't want my kids to have to learn coding from someone who most probably has no clue about it
and when they don't want to

10:02 AM
indeed, they have to want it, that's the most important thing
3

Something like coding should (and practically cannot) be a mandatory education

If I have to make a bet now, I think mine daughter (she's 2) will ask it while I don't think mine son will do that(4)

you can definitely teach children coding at the age of 11, but only if they're interested
you can definitely also teach them earlier
but if you make coding hard (which it shouldn't be)

I just hope one of them will follow mine steps, but if they don't I won't be blaming them

then be prepared that they won't like it and do something different
anyways kids are a rather far away future for me..

@rolfl How so?

That answer is flagged Not-an-answer.
as a result, it is giving the moderators a blue-flag notfication

It's obfuscation

@Vogel612 I disagree, it can be mandatory, there's also lots of people that don't like math yet it's also mandatory; Doesn't mean that I agree with coding being mandatory though

I'm not good with C++, but that looks like a trolling answer to me

@rolfl this is practically only deletable...

I actually don't think it will make a decent comment at all....
first, it's too long

in a comment, the code would become so messy it's of no value

10:14 AM
@Vogel612 this answer is not even an attempt at answering. It seems to be a question about how to understand the code in the question.

second, it's just "chatty".
So, I am tempted to just delete it.
Now, the interesting part.

@Vogel612 in a comment, it wouldn't matter that the code would be messy. All the code is already in the question, and it's not messy in the question.

I also can see this in the review queue, and I sort of like getting reviews under my belt, and collecting those.... and low-quality-posts are uncommon, so, I don't want to miss them.....

@skiwi - back to the XML "vulnerability"
It is the logical equivalent of saying: recursion can cause stack overflows, let's turn off recusion.

I'm checking out an album by Flyleaf. I like quite a bit of their music, but I only have one album.

@rolfl but... there is no stack limit for data, right?

Basically, @skiwi - you could say that many, many things are vulnerable to the same type of problem....
@Vogel612 The issue "reported", basically, is that there are various "features" in XML that allow you to reference data in an abstract way.
entity references being the primary one.
If the referenced entity is big, and you reference it often, you will run out of memory
So, let's disable entity reference dereferencing.

that's inane...
It's only ever going to become a problem if a) people don't properly limit allocated memory when processing XMLs

For example, in XHTML, references a non-breaking space.....

10:38 AM
and b) people don't properly limit allocated memory when processing XMLs

what if instead referenced a 1-gigabyte compressed data block....

so the problem isn't XML, but the attempt to parse it with a non-limited memory..
which ends up eating your memory away, and thus slowing down your server.

That ^^^

--> solution: limit allocated memory..

Java does that by default... ;-)

10:40 AM
and error out when the memory limit is exceeded.

but, python apparently does not.
Anyway, the real question is whether the XML parser should defend against it.... and when.

Reading up... ;o

An XML parser that refuses to process the entity references in the specified way, would be broken for other reasons.

@rolfl well ... in Java you do get it automatically, but at the price of a JVM that stops operating when fed the wrong input

At least good to know that you're aware of that :) Was mainly wondering about that
Err can someone ping me as a test?

10:42 AM
@Vogel612 Well, that's the whole point, and it is also exactly what you recommended:
1 min ago, by Vogel612
and error out when the memory limit is exceeded.

@rolfl AFAIK Python does as well.

so there should be a way to sandbox the XML parsing into a separate memory constrained area, to prevent JVM shutdown, if it's undesired

I've tried.

@skiwi just normal ping? or re-ping? or even as reply?

I never managed to get my Python to overflow, but I might not have been aggressive enough.

10:42 AM
My ping notification is gone

If you write it decent, the global GC should handle it.

@skiwi how about a super-ping ?

If you don't de-reference it, yea, you can make it crash.

Q: Why are there no alternatives to TeX, or, why is TeX still used?

eeggI'm fairly new to TeX and LaTeX, having been drawn in by the Big Idea — creating a document programmatically. However, my experience of TeX (and its libraries — LaTeX, ConTeXt, …) has been almost entirely unpleasant. My impression is that TeX (etc.) is essentially a pile of undocumented macros ...

Q: Compare two directories, apply the changes, backup and restore

I've been playing around with it but they don't seem to be recognized inside Visual Studio

Not sure what you mean.

@SimonAndréForsberg Maybe I could apply for a PhD to write a new typesetting language that does not have LaTeX flaws and is written in a modern language
