:(
I guess we are all doing school or work.

I need to start trying to take a stab at some JS zombies soon

I don't know what to do :(
I've looked at a couple really old zombies, but they use languages I don't know.
I did kill 3-4 that could get me the silver badge if they got 5 votes recently.

Still don't really understand the concept behind self-referencing functions, aka namespacing

12:06 AM
Oh, god, I feel so dumb when everyone starts talking about programming here.

I just think of a namespace like a mega class sort of thing.

@Hosch250 Ahh, I see. Still, whenever I come in here and I see large chunks of code, I sorta go, "Oh, god, I don't know what to say..."

I should look that up.
@EthanBierlein Huh?

@Hosch250 Well, I'm not the most experienced programmer, yet.

A: A self invoking anonymous function expression

ChristophA common metod is the following (called namespacing) - It created an encapsulated scope by immediately executing your function and returning the essential parts you need into your variable: var yourNamespace = (function(window, undefined){ /* private code:*/ ...

12:12 AM
Oh, a JS namespace.
I was thinking C#.

@EthanBierlein Just start looking at smaller chunks of code.
It should be easier to do if you're looking at a well-written large chunk of code.

@nhgrif Ahh, I see now. It might also help if I would actually read other comments for context as well.

You mean code comments? Or do you mean like plain-English text surrounding code blocks posted on Code Review?

@nhgrif Both would probably help.

Well, there's this view on code comments too.

12:16 AM
@EthanBierlein You might not believe this, but when I was trying to get started with C++, I didn't even know what an IDE was.
It took me over a day to find VS.

@Hosch250 Lol, I remeber a couple years back when all the programming I did was in online IDEs. Yechh...

@nhgrif I like the looks of your blog.

Thank you.

@nhgrif It has pretty colors....

Looks good on mobile too.

12:22 AM
Very clean

Except the code snippets, but not sure what could possibly be done about viewing code on mobile.
Color scheme inspired by Xcode.

@nhgrif I love that color scheme. It makes me happy
I just get the feeling of "Yippee! Time to program!"

So, go get a Mac, download Xcode, and start playing in the playground.

@sᴉɔuɐɹɥԀ RSA

12:27 AM
@sᴉɔuɐɹɥԀ Hypothetical star?

@Marc-Andre merci :)

No, theoretical star means that @sᴉɔuɐɹɥԀ would like to give the chat message a star, but he can't because he already fired all his ammunition.

@nhgrif Oh, I think I remember that from the Many Memes of Meta...

@sᴉɔuɐɹɥԀ De rien! Ca fait plaisir ;)

@nhgrif or in this case because I'm on my phone

12:29 AM
Oh yeah, that too.
I hate not being able to star from phone.

I've started learning ruby on rails and this is real magic for me at the moment.

But... once a message is starred, you can add a star from your phone.
@Marc-Andre Where I'll be working in June, they use Rails for all of their back-ends.

As much as I like Safari fir iOS that is one thing that sucks
Though I think its on all browsers

I'm sure it's speed up a lot of things since there is so much magic and everything is already there. The thing is when you don't know how everything works at first hand, it's hard (well I find it hard).

Q: Caesar Cipher python

stephenblackI don't understand why my program isn't working. I had asked help in stackoverflow and people recommended me going here and ask for help instead. @nhgrif I think any time Monday would be fine. Mind you, just one dude's opinion, Sunday is probably fine too. Sundays are just usually really slow here

The only other thing I could find in @rolfl's calculator was the order of operations problem.
I suggested a work-around, and bumped the question, but it still needs a better answer.

I think this is a good answer... user can't upvote (or doesn't know how)

A: iOS Swift - Reload location function with NSTimer for app background doesn't work

nhgrifYou can not make an NSTimer work like this while your application is in the background. NSTimer's are not "real-time mechanisms". From the official documentation: Timers work in conjunction with run loops. To use a timer effectively, you should be aware of how run loops operate—see NSRunLoo...

Replacing toilets... having fun.

Want to be a plumber now?

I do most of my own home renovation.
For this weekend, the main-floor bathroom "Powder room".
Replace toilet and sink, paint.
new mirror, new light.
paint includes paint ceiling.
Old toilet is out, old sink is out. first coat of paint is on. new sink is in, but plumbing not yet connected.

My dad does the same here.
I don't know how to do any of it, but I'm pretty quick to figure that kind of stuff out, and I can always smoke the doc/RTM.
Dishes time, better go.

Yeah.... it almost always is more about ... bravado, than competence. Anyone can do it if they read the docs, and have the guts

If I don't, pretty soon it will be past dishes time (my best quick-response ever, which tells a lot about me).
See you.

3:18 AM
Looking through endless pages of documentation is the bane of my existence right now...

But, the docs help me get the flange extender on to the toilet waste pipe, so, now I aint' gonna get shit on the floor... that has to be a good thing, right?

@rolfl Well, yes, but when you've spent 2 1/2 hours trying to fix one problem, whether toilet or C#, it's still really annoying.
I swear to god, these damn NullReferenceExceptions are going to kill me.
YES. It is now gone, and I can now continue on my new project.

Man I wish this place was more active, even at night.

You'll have to talk to the Australians about that.

@Hosch250 Who here - Wait, data explorer, nevermind.

I can name a couple off-hand, but you can also check my script out.
Mehrad, mjolka, Quill...

@Hosch250 Could I have script link? I don't want to have to craft a script by hand.

4:04 AM
@Hosch250 Wow, I didn't realize there were that many, although I don't think most of them are active in chat.

Nope, a few of them check in periodically.
Mjolka and Mehrad, in particular.

Monknight
@EthanBierlein I'm usually around pretty late into the night, especially on weekends :)

@sᴉɔuɐɹɥԀ Same here, it's about 11:30 here in Minnesota. I've been here for about 2 1/2hrs trying to figure out why the hell classes aren't being added to my project namespace in visual sudio.

Why didn't you add them?
I've never had this problem, what are you doing?

@rolfl I'm more than happy to let the landlord take care of all this "shit" (figuratively and literally speaking)... Never been home owner, not sure I really want to either
@EthanBierlein Ah, I'm in Indiana so +1 hour from you
But kind of a night bird

@Hosch250 I'm creating a new class file encapsulated in my program's namespace, yet I still can't access that class. It's not like it's private or anything either.
@Hosch250 It is also in the same directory as all my other source files.

Have you considered perhaps asking on Stack Overflow?

4:40 AM
No, don't do that yet.
So, can you post the basic structure?

It could benefit someone else in the future, too :)

It will probably be closed as a duplicate.

@sᴉɔuɐɹɥԀ Sadly, For some reason my account on SO has been blocked. It's strange too.

Q: Improving performance of VBA data validation script in Access with large data size

I asked several bad questions, then asked another.
Then, just seconds after I posted it, I solved the problem and deleted it.

@Hosch250 Actually, as far as I remember, all of my questions are score > 0. I think 2 out of my 25 total were deleted because they were bad.

And, I got auto-banned.
Weird.

Sounds like a fluke then

@Hosch250 I probably just wouldn't be able to word my problem correctly.

4:43 AM
OK, so, could you post the basic structure of your classes then?
Just the basic namespace/class structure.

@Hosch250 Sure, just give me a minute or two.

Or, maybe link to a Github repo so I can mess with it myself.

@Hosch250 I don't have it uploaded to Github yet.

OK.
I need to go to bed soon, so the sooner the better.

Okay, here's the file named Tokenizer.cs
`
`using System;

namespace EsoBinary
{
public class Tokenizer
{
static void TokenizeString(string stringToTokenize)
{
// TODO: Implement tokenization.
}
}
}`
And here's what I'm trying to do.
`using System;

namespace EsoBinary
{
class Program
{
static void Main(string[] args)
{
// This line doesn't work.
Tokenizer.TokenizeString("");
}
}
}`
@Hosch250 Sorry bout' the badly formatted code.

4:50 AM
You can use the Fixed Font button next time.
I see.

@Hosch250 Thanks, any idea on what's causing the issue?

Lots.
You haven't created an instance of Tokenizer.

@Hosch250 Large facepalm

If you just want one instance that you never have to instantiate, use a public static class.

@Hosch250 Even larger facepalm

4:52 AM
This is one of the trickier parts of OOP, knowing when to use a static class.

I think my brain may be muddled from staying up this late.

Me too.
I'm in MN too.

@Hosch250 Cool, MSP metro area?

Yup.
I'm actually within walking distance of the east shore of White Bear Lake.
Know where that is?
I walk my dog down there almost every day.

@Hosch250 I've heard of it, just never been there.

4:54 AM
Anyway, did you get it to work?
What IDE are you using? What error message did it give you?

@Hosch250 Yup, I changed my classes to static and it worked.
@Hosch250 I always had trouble with languages like Java and C# coming from a python world.

Careful there, do you really only ever want one?
Also, don't ever use variables that could be used in 2+ different calls, or you will learn about static the hard way, like I did.

@Hosch250 Most of my classes were similar to the tokenizer.cs file. A class with some static methods.

If you have a field in a static class, it should never be modified.
You could try using const, but that doesn't always work.
I've not had it work once, but I don't remember on what.
What you are doing looks like it shouldn't be a problem.

@Hosch250 Actually, I don't use const, I just do something like this for fields: public int num {get; private set; }

4:57 AM
Yeah, that too.

I don't know, which one is better, const or private set;?

In C++, you would have to specify a private variable.
Then, you would have to create a method to get the value, and label it const.

@Hosch250 Well, I don't program in C++, something about it just, well, scares me.

Umm, go with private set, I'd say.

Okay, cool.

4:59 AM
I started on C++, and I will be doing more this summer.
Anyway, bed time.
See you.

See ya.
I'll probably head out too.

Oh, BTW.
Your question would NOT have been well received on SO, @EthanBierlein.
(Pinged because you left so quick.)

5:17 AM
@Hosch250 I understand that I would have been a duplicate, but it's not exactly something that you can just search in google. Especially if someone is a beginner.

@EthanBierlein Glad to hear @Hosch250 has helped you solve the problem :)

hey @rolfl

@tgkprog It belongs on CR, but... few people know Spring very well around here. @Marc-Andre and I know it quite well (and maybe @janos?) However, I don't know what these terms are in your code: POC, redis, sparklr2, tonr2. Because of this it becomes hard to understand what your code actually does. Try to structure your question better, and describe better what it does.

yes
No, the question isn't that horrible

I'm not familiar with , so I might be mistaken in what kind of question it is.
The answers weren't helpful at least

You mean... the other answers?

To be honest though, I don't think the OP put too much effort in it.
@nhgrif ofc

12:31 PM
The question could have been better if he included sample snippets of what he's trying to do so far.
Do you know Java?

JavaScript
Since a week ^^

What OOP languages do you know?

C++, Python, VHDL (if that counts)

Well, C++ is close enough to Objective-C that you can read my answer and understand what he's asking for.
You probably have to know Java or C# though to understand why he's having difficulty.

Probably
I tried C# once, made a basic application with it
Even had a kind-of fancy UI with XAML and all
Didn't like it

12:34 PM
Yeah, I'm just talking about a basic console application.

I'm not good with UI

But, in C++, C, Objective-C, you can have "free functions" and "free variables". Things that are not part of any class.
You can't have these in Java and C#.
So to accomplish something close in Java, you make a public static variable or method within one of your classes.
Like this (example from my answer):
public class MyApplication
{
    public static Object[] myArray;
    public static void main(String [] args)
    {
        // execution begins here
    }

}

Why would you do such a thing in a heavily OO language?
Isn't that considered taboo?

You shouldn't (which my answer also addresses).
Which is also part of the problem with the other answers.

I mean, this is basically like asking how to implement global variables, right?

12:36 PM
Yes.

Ah, now I understand the question and answers

All of the other answers make two assumptions:
1) The user is writing a Cocoa or Cocoa Touch application (in which we wouldn't write code in `main.m`
2) The user is some sort of Java expert just trying to get some Objective-C basics down.
But the way I see it, he's asking about writing in main.m, so he's just writing a simple console application (this part probably requires Objective-C knowledge, but it's pretty obvious if you've written 1 console application and 1 non-console application in Objective-C)
And he's asking about creating global variables so that all his methods can access it instead of asking a question about passing data around, so he's not an expert in any OOP language.
So my answer explains how to do what he's asking... then explains how he should be doing it.

Which is why your answer is better than the existing ones.

@SimonAndréForsberg Well, as far as I know, C# has some benefits over Java. See this question.

@EthanBierlein There's many things Java has over C# as well. I don't want to go into that debate (again) is just a little friendly-joke over here. Each one prefers his own language.
and there's a reason that question is "closed as primarily opinion-based"

@skiwi really? I've shared it here before

Some of those VBA entries are mine...

2:39 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg I do remember different sites that listed language flaws
Maybe I've seen it, but just don't remember it

2:51 PM
@nhgrif - saw this picture, and thought of you:

Please only ask concrete questions here and outline the exact problem. For actual code reviews head over to CodeReview.SE. — Philip Allgaier 31 secs ago

@rolfl I see an Apple

@PhilipAllgaier This particular question would be just as bad on Code Review. It's not even clear whether or not the code works. If it does not work, it is entirely off-topic for CR. — Simon André Forsberg 21 secs ago

Q: What is the best way to compile scss for customizable wordpress them

Sohan ZamanWell, this could be an odd question. But I found no solution for this. First of all, I have written all my styles in scss. In my theme, I want to keep color variations settings. Where site admin can select his/her own colors. I'm going to distribute the theme, so there should be problem if thei...

@skiwi Is that Python 3.4.3 problem still current?

@Mast What one do you mean example? I'm having multiple problems right now :p

Installing 3.4.3 while on 3.4.0

Yeah, still on that issue, it probably doesn't matter too much though, but bugs me slightly

I'm interested in the problem as well, I'll keep you posted

Q: Beginner minswweeper game

m.cekieraI wrote a basic Minesweeper game for practice. It consist 3 classes: Main - only as luncher, Cell - controling behavior of single cell, Board - coordinating behavior of cells. The hardest part for me, was a determaning the value of sigle cells (how many mines is around it), and fireing a chain ...

Right now I'm getting the exact same error on Linux as I had on Windows :|

@rolfl So, with every Apple product you purchase (iPad, iPhone, iPod, or any of the computers), you get two stickers like this.
Since my current work buys lots of iPads, they have lots of these stickers. My current boss has plastered them all over the place.

And now my pip3 broke

owww
Well, one way to solve the problem is probably to download 15.04 LTS

@CaptainObvious I'd love to review that one, but not today.

Why can't there just be a language that's easy, compact and works on all environments?
I like modern stacks more, but Java has never given me this much trouble as I'm getting now so far

3:42 PM
@skiwi A programmer is supposed to fix things, not break them.

@skiwi They tried, only works if you stay inside some form ofVM

@SimonAndréForsberg I'd love if I could get around to programming...

What's wrong with Java, exactly?

@nhgrif Nothing!
Although it's not exactly known for being "compact"...

Well, this is like the FAST/CHEAP/GOOD problem. Choose two.

@skiwi You're running 14.04 LTS right?
15.04 isn't LTS, but I'm going to upgrade towards it anyway, we'll see if that allows a higher python3 version

@Mast Yep

@nhgrif agreed. I don't think @skiwi will ever be satisfied with a language, given his current requirements.
Although I'd argue that Java is both fast, cheap, and good of course :)

Looking at Python vs Java: Java would satisfy me if it were easier to write, Pythonm would satisfy me if it would actually have a stable environment
Java is so verbose for doing simple things, but it does work at least

Java is easy to write.

@skiwi It is stable, just stick with Py2

3:47 PM
FAST/CHEAP/GOOD problem isn't about languages, it's about developer time.

Perhaps you should start using Lombok, @skiwi?

For here it's out of the question though, because the client requested Python + Django :|

Or start using Scala? (ping @Donald.McLean)

@SimonAndréForsberg Meh, that's unstable

You can find a developer who can do it fast & cheap, but it won't be good.

JS?

It looks like even python3 can be considered unstable
@Mast JS nope, JSX I want to give a chance

@skiwi I see someone on CR referring to the lombok annotations quite often. Seems quite stable.

@skiwi I'm not saying I like JS, but it is cross-platform

@SimonAndréForsberg It relies on "exploits" in the Java Compiler
@Mast There's probably a reason why node.js is gaining popularity

@skiwi Yea, its freaking illogical and asynchronous, but it gets the job done

3:50 PM
@Mast I believe there's a good reason for why JS takes up approximately 1/5th of YourLanguageSucks

@SimonAndréForsberg So do I

I'm really about to put this current prototype in a place where I can never see it again nobody will ever see it again

I would recommend posting questions like "Is this code idiomatic?" to codereview.stackexchange.comAdrian 37 secs ago

In theory our application is very simple
We want a ReactJS front-end and a Django backend
But it would be better if the ReactJS front-end is embedded in one application together with a Django REST API, such that it can be deployed at once
Then it would be better to compile JSX to JS on client-side for improved performance and better SEO

@Adrian I agree, but Code Review requires working code, which this doesn't seem to be, yet. — Shepmaster 55 secs ago
