Hey hey, folks.
Chat login works again.
How're you doing?

Hi kleinfreund!

Anyone else had trouble login into SE chat yesterday?
Hey 200_success

There were some network disruptions, but it was mostly working fine, I think.

Yeah, I read something about a bit of a DDoS attack going on. Whatever, it's working fine now.

Q: Shell script that copies configuration and dotfiles to repository

kleinfreundA while ago I had the idea to store all the important configuration and dotfiles from my system in a Git repository. Yes, I checked the Twitter account, too.

hey @kleinfreund

Hey @Heslacher
Well, I somehow screwedd up my Ubuntu installation. Going to try to reinstall that. See you later, folks. :P

Have fun with that!

Well, actually, I probably should try fixing it, before trying to reinstall it alltogether.
I installed it alongside Windows and I sometimes experience hard resets. For example I tried to use grub-customizer. After starting it, my laptop will just do a hard reset and boot again.
Any idea where to start to fix that?

Random hard resets? Sounds like some kind of hardware problem.

7:22 PM
Nah, I don't think so. It's pretty specific and only happened when I either tried to start grub-customizer, update or uninstall it.
Has not happened in scenarios where grub-something wasn't involved.
However, it happened just a couple of hours ago where I tried to upgrade to 15.10.
Only thing is that I can't nail any more specific symptoms down to maybe post a question askubuntu.

"Random" is code for "I haven't collected enough data points yet"

I know that. I have no idea where to start collecting, though.
Phew, what is wrong with my typing. So many errors. :P
See you in a few seconds. Booting Ubuntu.

Q: Handling state in recursion

Nevermind, already killed my Ubuntu installation by trying to upgrade. :O
After entering login credentials I get a constant blue screen where the cursor blinks in a low frequency.

7:48 PM
Blue screen at Ubuntu?
2
What does ctrl+alt+F1 say about it?

Literally a screen of blue color.
Like just blue. Nothing apart from the mouse popping through every second or so.
Can I safely remove the partition Ubuntu is installed on? It's not the boot partition. Atleast I need to enter the boot menu everytime I want to select ubuntu from there.
I didn't know of Ctrl+Alt+F1, though. I keep that in mind. :)
I quickly try that. Later!

@kleinfreund We've all learned that trick when it was too late.

like this?

8:04 PM
You can safely destroy the Ubuntu partition, but it might corrupt your MBR.
So you'll probably have to fix that.
@Mat'sMug This is not the blue screen you're looking for.

@nhgrif I don't think it's heavily opinion based. Any answers would be based off OOP principles, I would hope, which are relatively objective. I don't really understand your second concern; how I do write code if I don't know what to use? — asdf 4 mins ago
I can't think of anything nice to say.
I've deleted two comments, and now I'm going to stop trying.
> how I do write code if I don't know what to use?
I can only assume he's a student or self-teaching and has never had a programming job ever.
I don't understand that logic at all... and yet it's not uncommon.
@nhgrif I did do research, but felt like both models were appropriate in their own way. I was hoping that someone with more experience might be able to point out why one model is stronger because of a past experience they had or a subtlety I missed. I've never had a programming job, but I doubt if my coworkers would mind if I shared a problem I had with them and asked them for input on a decision I was having trouble with despite looking at online resources. — asdf 1 min ago

@nhgrif You guessed correctly then!

Unfortunately.
He's also really wrong.
> I doublt if my coworkers would mind if I shared a problem I had with them and asked them for input on a decision I was having trouble with despite looking at online resources
It depends... but for the type of question he's asking, I'd mind.

I wouldn't mind. Only I'd pay the boss a visit after the meeting, and ask for a raise.

Worst case scenario, if I were trying to decide between a struct and a class, I'd rubberduck it at someone...
2
But even then, it's kind of a trivial thing... and I'd probably default to a struct if I ever had any question
The problem is, he's asking the wrong question.

9:41 PM
It's okay to not know when you should use a struct versus a class, but if you don't know, the question you should be asking and the help you should be asking for is in figuring out on your own (in general terms) when you should use what.
But his question feels like "tell me what to code"
And this is a "I don't even know where to begin" type of question, which always bothers me.
And honestly, his class vs struct question is probably best answered by enum, now that I actually read it all the way through.
@EthanBierlein If you have any further comments... this discussion is too difficult to have in a comments section.

Daan, first, don't edit meta commentary into your question. Second, this isn't closed because anyone doubts the code isn't real or isn't yours. This is closed because you are seeking an explanation of code moreso than a review. If you have any questions, you can ask on the meta. — nhgrif 48 secs ago
I'm not sure why people think that editing in "PS: This isn't off-topic" makes their question any better.

That's like prefixing something offensive by "No offense, but..."
If you prefixed something as "No offense", you've just forfeited any right to be surprised if someone is offended by what you're about to say.

@nhgrif I see why there shouldn't neccesarily be a tag. I guess I didn't think that through before posting. I do think we should have something like it though. Just not design-oriented.

Like what?

I dont know. Right now language-design is just stuck in my head. I'm sure the words will come though.

We can review a compiler or interpreter... but if the language rules it is compiling/interpreting are up for review, then the question becomes unclear. Is this code doing what it's supposed to or not? We can't know because the language rules aren't set yet apparently.
We can review code written in a custom language, as long as there is a compiler/interpreter for that custom language... but again, reviewing the language rules makes the question unclear. Does this code compile and work correctly, or do there exist syntax errors? We can't no for sure if the language rules aren't completely set yet.

Well, if it's put that way, then we can specify that the tag is only used for reviewing the code behind the created language. Not the created language itself.

10:13 PM
What tag? And what do you mean exactly by "reviewing the code behind the created language"? Do you mean the compiler or interpreter?

I'm talking about the backend code for the language, like the code that runs the interpreter/compiler, or the tokenizer/lexer/parser, or other parts.

There are already tags for these.
As Jamal's answer pointed out

Well, yes, but it would (maybe?) be nice to have a more generalized tag?

Why?
Are you writing an interpreter or a compiler?

Neither, at the moment.

10:17 PM
Then you don't need any tags.

Okay. :|
Ah forget it. Just nuke this whole thing.

I mean, it's almost like you're suggesting that despite the specific tags for and , we need a tag like

I still appreciate you asking first before just creating the tag. Sure, not every new tag proposal needs a Meta post, but tags like these aren't obvious choices for the site.

Ahg. Maybe my obsessive need for organization got to me. Sometimes I just need to put things in a generalized "container" that are all related. Now I see how dumb that is when being specific is probably the better way to go.

It's not even that is that specific necessarily. What kind of interpreter? etc.
It's that any tag that's any more general is probably way too general.

10:28 PM
Well maybe we should implement different tags for different kinds of interpreters, like .

Perhaps, but only if there are enough questions that'd be tagged that way to warrant a tag...
And would anyone follow the tag?

Probably not.
Obsessive lunatic: "I'd follow the tag because I like to look at large files with random jumbled characters! He. Ha. Ek. (Continues to unintelligible gibberish)."
Anyways see yall later.
