@sᴉɔuɐɹɥԀ Just started writing code and having trouble not deleting the main function

Hah! I didn't even see the int main i = -1

Q: Better method structure for insertion in doubly linked list

NicholasHere is my insertion method for a doubly linked list. It works, but passing two parameters for the method seems cumbersome. Can anyone suggest a cleaner approach than this? LinkedList list = new LinkedList(); Link link1 = new Link("A"); list.insert(list.head,link1); Link link2 = n...

So... this guy emailed & sent me a twitter message because he can't figure out how to use a project I put on github.
I was already annoyed that he contacted me through both methods and didn't make it clear he was the same person (the account names weren't even remotely similar).
He insisted in chatting about it through twitter direct messages though...
I told him it's a conversation that would be better held in a Stack Exchange chatroom or through email.
So... several hours later he sent me a message and said he didn't have enough rep. I didn't reply and haven't heard from him since. I'm not going to help this guy figure this out over Twitter..
There are millions of different methods for him to communicate with me.

I really do love it when my U's server locks up...
I just timed out of a zillion tabs.

A zillion? Why are you DDOSing them?

Hmm, that gives me a bright idea.
I have 8 to be exact.
7 timed out, 1 loading so slow you could send cold molasses through the wire quicker.

Hmm. My meta-effect today has now resulted in a total of three downvotes and five upvotes.

Are you trying for the Party in the Front, Business in the Back hat?

Q: I'm fairly new here, but it seems like many question askers only want the line of code, not how to understand how to solve their problem

Valerie AsensioIt's a challenge, in general, to debug someone's code problem remotely, especially when a question is vague or ambiguous. But sometimes I have a pretty good idea where the issue lies, and how to ferret out the problem, so I suggest debugging / problem solving steps. These are typically for questi...

I saw that.......
Oh, its yours.

I wish I knew who is in charge of the U's system, including their new "upgrade".

Hmm? Saw what?

I could design an interface better than them without any training.
And, I'd get this slow-problem fixed.

I mean, you say that...
But do you actually know what's actually involved in the system?

Something!
It just loaded like lightning now...

Caching

12:43 AM
Would that make it load slow?

no, that's quite the opposite

...

Nope, but, often, pages with heavy use of javascript libraries, etc....

you're thinking of no-caching

Oh, no, it wasn't even connected properly before, it timed out because it couldn't get the session lock.

12:43 AM
the first time to the page, you have the cost of downloading the libraries.
after that, they are cached, so they go faster.

...asks the guy who thinks he knows how to write it perfectly..

I didn't say I knew how, I said if I was in charge, it would get fixed.

@Hosch250 There's a carefully designed tool that diagnoses whether caching is a problem:

@rolfl Lol.

@Hosch250 Time for a career in politics

12:46 AM
Like this.

@Hosch250 Sounds like your plan is to overcommit and under deliver then.

And...., my tabs are timing out again.
Maybe they should have tested for the problem before they rolled it out.

Hard to test what might not be known
at least, for a mere mortal like me

Or maybe they shouldn't have downgraded the system and caused it :)

StackEggs.

12:49 AM
haha wow... this guy... in Cities: Skylines... he's got a lake... on one side he placed all of his sewage outflow pipes, on the otherside, all of his water intake pumps... and across the middle, a hydro-electric dam...

Yeah, I know debugging is a pain, just awful sick of being locked out - it even happens during exams.
Fortunately, I have no more exams at Moodle this semester - just a couple papers.
My ACCT class has a couple exams at McGraw-Hill Connect.
And, I'm in again.

Now, I have a question about my calculator.
Like @JeroenVannevel pointed out, I can't have it be static because it has a shared stream.

So, what is the best way to get around this?

@Hosch250 couple of points
you don't need a StreamReader, you can use StreamReader's base type TextReader
instead of a static field, you can pass the TextReader between the methods
since you're given a string, you can use a StringReader, which is derived from TextReader
i think you should be checking if calls to Peek and Read return -1, which indicates no more characters to read
finally, a big problem with the static field is that if EvaluateExpression is called, and called again before it returns (e.g. from a different thread) the result of the first call will be wrong

I can't really tell whether superuser.com/users/388162/se-sucks is affecting anyone on sites other than Anime/Manga, so is it really right to ask for a network removal or just limit it to area of effect?

@Quill while that concern is true, I think that's for the staff to evaluate... Oftentimes they have a better overview of what is happening where than us users...
they just seem to be somewhat disgruntled about some drama somewhere...

@Quill In general, if you have a concern about anything on the site that is not handled with a downvote, close vote, or so on, then flag it for moderator attention. If you notice a pattern that you are not happy with, then be sure to say that there is a pattern in the mod message, add links to examples of it.
The mods on each site do communicate with other sites too, so be sure to mention any cross-site concerns in the flag as well.
If relevant, flag content on each site for the other mods.

they had two huge diesel generators to take over when the power went out.
they had huge battery backups to carry them through between the power loss, and generator startup.
they tested regularly, and effctively.

@rolfl But apparently, they had a crappy breaker room :P

The parts that were needed to repair the power were not available in the country, so had to be flown in.
By the time the system was actually running (on power), it was 2 days later.
then they took 3 days to verify that everything was OK (all transactions wre complete, no data loss, etc.
then they were a week behind in payments for customers, etc.... they had already started losing customers....
it took about 4 more weeks to catch up on the backlog of transactions that they could not process because their systems were at capacity.

3:30 PM
And at that point, they were out of business?

By the time they recovered, they had actually lost no data, and lost no transactions, and the systems recovered "perfectly".
but, they lost credibility, and customers.

Q: Is it worthwhile to edit old Titles?

SnowbodyWhile looking at a question, I saw a list of other related questions that had several meaningless titles: How can I make this code more elegant Can I make this C# for-loop more efficient? How to refactor a verbose datatype? How can I improve this OOP design? Is it even valid? How can I make thi...

@JeroenVannevel - yes, the package name traditionally is your domain-name reversed. This allows everyone to create a "Node" class. additionally, after your domain, you then break it down by department/application/etc.
So, things like com.google.commons.util.StringUtils happend (don't know if that exists).
For people without their own domain, the tradition has become to use your github name....
or gmail address...
or something that makes you unique.

@rolfl That's actually what Maven Central recommends in case you don't have a domain name -> com.github.skiwi2
As you "own" that site

Q: Writing an IRC Bot from scratch

Chris WoodwardI have been learning C# for a couple years now, and using small projects to help myself learn. My most recent project is a complete rewrite of my first C# project that just got out of hand (the old one). I would really appreciate it if you could take the time to take a look at it and provide ...

@CaptainObvious Hold on, I directed him here from reddit

Now the U busted their CSS file or something, so the pages are utterly unreadable.

@CaptainObvious Don't VTC it when he's about to edit.

An unhappy SO user just accused me (and all other SO answerers) of being arrogant.
I am arrogant... But I'm not sure how get that from my SO answers.
Wow. I am not so arrogant, you certainly appear to be arrogant enough to believe without proper basis that I do not research or attempt to answer my own questions or solve my own problems. That quote you took from my post perfectly demonstrates this as I meant exactly what you went on to say I should do instead.. The arrogance of question answerers on SO is unbelievable — Josh C 26 mins ago

@CaptainObvious Is there really a need to put it on hold when it's obvious the questioner is actively cooperating in getting it on track?
I redirect him here from another site and the first thing he's met with is his question being closed
That's just counterproductive since being on hold or open wouldn't make a difference

Well, I can't exactly vote to reopen it yet, but I put a comment that we will.

5:22 PM
Yes, @JeroenVannevel. Until it's on-topic, it's off-topic. It's on hold, not deleted. This is why re-open votes exist.

I agree.... close until fixed, then reopen. Ping for support in here if you feel the reopen is too slow.
mob-re-open it.

We are always quick to cast reopen votes.
And the mods are quick to take care of it as well.

Unless they are afk, like me.... now ..... hmmmm.... now

@rolfl ... Are you afk?

So yea, even one source file is too large for pasting in here. For the help I would like (code review of entire solution), I don't think the setup here is the best way for me to ask it. — Chris Woodward 2 mins ago
Hmm, sounds like maybe his files are too big?

5:28 PM
He needs to pick specific parts, or we need to be glad we put it on hold.

FYI, somebody has kindly created a pull request with optimized raw SQL that performs 2-3x better for writes than the original raw SQL: github.com/daj/android-orm-benchmark/pull/2 I plan to merge it once we've finished code review. — Dan J 11 secs ago

Q: NetMQ and Polling Cancellation and Thread Disposal

KillercamI have a class I use to sent of request and to receive responses via NetMQ. This class uses a Pub-Sub type structure and works great. If I can get the answers, I'm almost assured the votes.

Q: Allowing CSS customization of beta sites

@ChrisW Well, indeed. I suppose "should" be temporary is more fitting. Code Review is an odd one as it's been borderline popular where just enough posts/people have been there to keep it alive, but not enough to make it a live site. I presume mostly because there's not enough users with high rep to moderate. — James 20 hours ago
I guess I need more rep..... you heard the man.
