@TopinFrassi maybe not as much, I can see it animate around and stop in that position on page load. although that would probably end up annoying

@TopinFrassi that's a good idea. i think we have our winner (or two of them).. and I think i'm going to move on with site's skin. i will post everything on meta, we can do small voting for logo, and move on.. how about that?
13

@Ludwik winner

Sounds perfect.

@Ludwik I'm staring that with my inexistant remaining star
3

@TopinFrassi I'm not starring that because I'm more conservative.

7:02 PM
I want more stars
We should riot for that too ^^

@Hosch250 I starred every.thing.

We've already asked several times on meta.

:D

@skiwi that would diminish the value of stars

@Hosch250 If you tilt that a little to make it like a C and a R, it's a big winner.

7:02 PM
@Hosch250 Could we have a little bit of color on the glass/CR part?

Inflation!

star responsibly (I know... no such thing)

@Mast I just borrowed @Mat'sMug's and squared the end.

@holroy I think it's nicer when it's so simple

@Vogel612 *stars*

Zak
7:03 PM
@Ludwik I still like the idea of half-slanted, but I'm not about to get hung up on it

@holroy What part? The rim, or the white inside?

@Vogel612 Disagreed, have the value of edits diminished since @Jamal started edting?
5

Zak
I'm sure I'll come to love whatever logo we eventually vote for

Have the colours been mentioned yet? Any idea what our primary colours are going to be?

@Hosch250 The rim... So that the CR stands out a little more...

7:04 PM
I like charcoal

From the logo I'd say grey and red, but that's ambiguous.

btw. one more thing...

@skiwi edits have inherent value, stars have value through scarcity

Charcoal, with teal and a dusky red.

teal??

7:04 PM
@Mat'sMug I like it too

i don't know if that's going to be possible but... swag.. what do you think about rubber duck with small logo on it? :)
2

@Hosch250 Teal???

@Mat'sMug My favorite color ;)

@Ludwik probably you've done this already, but it doesn't hurt saying: if you read around some posts on our site, it might help you get a feel for our mindsets, and the whole philosophy around us

@Ludwik CAN I HAZ DUCK PLZ

7:05 PM
@Ludwik I'd buy that

:D

(or two)

@Mat'sMug You see, I'm getting scared that we both live near montreal. :p

@Ludwik Rubberducks are important in this community. We even have a long-term project rolling called RubberDuck and we recently acquired its offspring BrainDuck.

it's Rubberduck (small "d") ;-)

7:06 PM
so i assume it's good idea :)
don't get too excited, not sure if its going to be possible. but will do my best :)

Ah, yes, @RubberDuck was with a capital D

:)

The stars are flowing so hard that everything I starred so far in the last... 40 minutes, isn't even on the star wall anymore
5
lol

Zak
@Ludwik I would do anything for a CR Rubber Duck

Rubber ducks are definitely a good idea.

7:09 PM
shit, I'll have to hide it from my kids

?

they'll fight over it you know. twins.

@Ludwik We're just glad we're hearing anything from the design team. Some of us were starting to think you forgot all about us.

Make them both wear it, like FreeMan.

@Mast hammer -> head -> nail

7:12 PM
@Mat'sMug Wouldn't that be hammer.head -> nail?

Maybe we should thank @Pops? He probably(?) has something to do with this?

@Mast whatever translates to "hit the nail on the head" ;-)

@Mat'sMug hammer -> nail.head

eh, wasn't too far off!

Are you sure it didn't take hitting Joel with a hammer-ping?

7:14 PM
Could have been hammer -> thumb
2

@Hosch250 that, we'll never know

@TopinFrassi I was thinking the same thing. On the other hand, he didn't know anything last time we spoke to him. He may or may not.

Zak
I'm happy to assign credit to @pops until proven otherwise

If you keep pinging him, he might come and prove otherwise.

7:15 PM
So, we now know something about our logo, have an idea about our colours AND we have a timeline.
Awesome.

@Hosch250 You mean, if we keep talking about @Pops? :p

They're not just rubber ducks, they're scientific instruments.

Q: Tracking Graduation Progress

thank you guys for all that feedback you gave me. i'm really happy we had this conversation here. it gave me more understanding about your community and everything. i'm going back to photoshop now and move on with site's skin.

@kleinfreund looks like your logo design idea is inspiring what's about to become grounds for our official site design!
^ my first power-ping
@Ludwik trust me, we're even happier about it :)

7:19 PM
@Mast nooo. we didn't forget about you. our Community Team have this site on priority list. they do really great job here and it's all thanks to them. i just move pixels around ;)

@Mat'sMug Combined with @65Fbef05.

@Ludwik If you ever need us again, you know where to find us. We'll be happy to help you with anything you need.

@Ludwik Don't strain your back moving heavy pixels - remember to bend your knees.
2

BTW @Ludwik, good job with the RPi design :)

@Ludwik Yeah, like @Mat'sMug said, it's cool
Damn I have troubles with that chat

7:27 PM
@Mast thanks guys! i'm going to visit this room more often for sure :) just to say hi cuz i dont know too much about code reviewing :)
@Mat'sMug thank you!

@Ludwik My graphic design skillz are legendary. And not in a good way!

That's why my portrait is so photorealistic...

@Edward That made me laugh out loud! Thank you!

@Edward You drew that all by yourself? </sarcasm>

@Mast Yes, it took five weeks of solid work.

I expect that my family will donate the original oil painting to the Louvre when I'm gone.

@Edward And why exactly would the Louvre be interested in an oil schematic of a NPN transistor?

@CaptainObvious wat the... one huge javadoc and nothing else??....

@CaptainObvious 2 more VTC, no code.

I don't understand all these people that post problem statements without an implementation and [apparently] expect us to write the code.

@Hosch250 "reviewed" but no comment?

I voted.
I couldn't think of a good wording for a comment, for some reason.
I found the auto comment post.

@Mast I'll bet it would be their first.

Ducky!

We've been talking about you!

I'm just now getting some pings and all I can do is LOL

7:48 PM
lol

@Ludwik I would kill for a Rubberduck with a CR logo!!!!

If you don't watch out, CR will be branded a terrorist group.

I said that
lol

Radical coders.

Lulz his way back to work

7:52 PM
@RubberDuck If we made CR logo decals, you could have a CR logo on just about anything

Codeurs Radicale!
@Edward All we need is a CNC machine and some stickers.

20 SSAS Don'ts - happy to see my design isn't headed that way

Q: Improving finding longest phrase algorithm

RogI have this task to find the longest identical phrase which appears in 2 given files. With small files (~500KB each) it works just fine, ~10 secs to finish. But with larger files (~5MB each) it took ~43 mins to complete. The text in larger files are just copied and pasted over and over again. And...

see you all later. Gotta do some work.

@Ludwik I want this for our logo.....

I'm not the one who occasionally unplugs their microwave/oven hybrid

@DanPantry meh. the opening and closing of the conversation was pinned (someone unpinned the opening) and we already have 3 pins.

@Mat'sMug Its pretty short but thats all I had to say on it :(

thing is, if he's only got that form in his app, it could be fine to compose it there. sure it's not ideal (the real way would be to override the application's startup code), but it's not quite a service locator if there's only 1 place he's got a kernel -- I haven't seen the GitHub code though

While true, I think its a good idea to nip the idea in its bud.
It would be better to tell him to avoid it entirely and let him learn when it is appropriate than to say it's okay in some cases and not okay in others to prevent confusion
In much the same way that you're taught gravity is a force in school because "its easier to explain" but, psych, gravity is just curved space time (and not a force)

@DanPantry two words: using. namespace. std. ;-)

Isn't.. that 3? :p

tss
speaking of gravity and school...

Q: If gravity isn't a force, then why do we learn in school that it is?

Peter HallI have studied some of Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, and I understand that it states that gravity isn't a force but rather the effects of objects curving space-time. If this is true, then why are we instructed in middle school that it is a force?

physics is awesome.

It is.

and I mean that in the truest sense of the word.
Especially when you realise just how small individual transistors are in computers now.. and the fact we've made them so small quantum mechanics are starting to interfere with them.

I'm going to pull my app from the store because it is so outdated. How should I put it on my resume?

@Hosch250 does pulling the app remove the page on the store too?

I believe so.

if you coul keep the ratings and such intact that would be really good
damn

I suppose I could just leave it.
It works really well, even if the source code is crap.
I haven't updated if for over a year now.
Not since before I joined CR.

10:54 PM
I would mention it at any rate
The fact you have a project out there that is being used by real people is valuable

I have some pretty good ratings on it, and I believe over 100k downloads.
I don't have the exact number, just the amount in the past year.

100k is a huge amount of downloads

A measly number compared to the number of Windows users.

Is that the "learn onenote" app?

Yes.
I think it was pretty detailed, if I do say so myself.
I should be working on a couple papers do in a couple weeks.
