A: Query and data manipulation review

PhrancisMySQL I can't speak to C# but I have a few ideas to optimize your MySQL queries. There is very likely a way to pass parameters to SQL that is better than concatenating SQL within your code, I suggest you Google that. As far as MySQL is concerned, you would obtain multiple benefits from using s...

^ Thoughts?

Only 9 days into the month, and we already have two pages of users with more than 10 votes? Not too bad.
3

12:38 AM
@Jamal do you have a query on SEDE for this?

No, it's found under the Users tab on the main page.

12:56 AM
@Phrancis i want to +1 is for parameterized queries and sprocs, but at the end you go back to string concatenation and not parameterized queries

@DaggNabbit I just have no idea how to not concatenate in C#... or do anything in C# for that matter

i have entirely forgotten everything about C# and would just as soon keep it that way... but still, i think it's confusing to recommend parameterized queries and then not use it

PHP I could probably handle but C# I know nothing
I just didn't feel comfortable proposing something specific for C# so I only addressed MySQL

oh right now, i remember
c# has linq now days
surprised nobody mentioned that yet, linq is actually pretty cool, could even be a "killer feature"

C# is Micro$oft, huh. No wonder it's ugly.

1:03 AM
eh, it's not really any uglier than any other srictly typed language
look how nice the linq example is though
that's pretty damn clean if you ask me

Looks clean enough

compared to the bottom example... very nice to have queries integrated into the language

I'd be happy to edit my answer (or upvote yours) if we figure out how to declare variables from C# and pass them to MySQL
(without concatenating, that is)

that's what the example i linked is for
the second example is closest to what he's doing

@DaggNabbit but you do have one incorrect assumption, that is, that I can write a single line of C# :)

1:08 AM
well you already did ;)
it's just something like string listQuery = "CALL sp_cmbListAdmins(@disp)";

Variables in C# normally have an @ tied to them?

no, that's their parameterized query thing
you make a string like that, instantiate an ObjectQuery, and then do...
myQuery.Parameters.Add(new ObjectParameter("disp", whatever));

well i'm guessing the linq way is probably more idiomatic now anyway

@Phrancis - Thanks for the SQL pointers. +1 and kudos.

1:14 AM
@JohnP I'd love to (and I'm looking into) write parameterized C# too, because I hate concatenating SQL as much as the next CR guy (or gal)

there's a new parameterized query answer but still no mention of linq

yes, and rather a snarky new answer imho.

i never know whether to attribute that kind of tone to a language barrier or just people being jerks
3

Given the user name, I would say language barrier is probable
It does seem a bit short, but not wrong

things like this though: "Code duplication is not a nice idea, it's a massive indication of code smell." ... could just be "there is some duplication in your code; you could refactor it like this"

1:21 AM
^ agreed
Guessing Sleiman Jneidi does better with computers than he does with people.

wow, just realized it's a two year old Jamalized post

I have a question though. Given that it's a C# compiled program that relies solely on clicked values to get the parameters, how vulnerable is it really to SQL injection?

@JohnP if you always use parameterized queries you'll never have to ask yourself that ;)

^ that
I'll admit I did not realize it was 2 years old

anyway, I thought C# people were vehemently opposed to any kind of string concatenation, ever
don't you guys have streams or string builders or whatever

1:26 AM
true. I'm curious though, because everyone always screams SQL INJECTION!, but c'mon. There's a point where caution becomes paranoia.
@DaggNabbit - We probably do. I'm still learning, and that code is from one of my first personal projects in C#.

@JohnP injection seems to mainly be a problem when reviewing PHP code.

@JohnP if the app is only accessible to trusted admins, you probably don't have to worry about people trying to do nasty stuff to it in general

It does seem like a bit of paranoia, 99.9% of users wouldn't even know it's possible. But to me if you submit code for peer review, it's good that it comes up.

but, what if a user name is Bob "The Man" Barker
and an admin innocently types it in
or something like that

MySQL will raise a syntax error if you try to pass that to it. Don't know about C# though.

1:32 AM
but parameterized queries aren't just for avoiding SQL injection, they're also there to do the work of escaping things for you so your code doesn't break

You can't type in any SQL code. The entire interface is menu/click driven only.

in fact I'd say that's their main job, and avoiding most injection attacks is just a nice side effect of that

That's true. I'm not disputing they're better, I just question what's behind it sometimes.

i think it just raises red flags for people when they see string concatenation, esp. in a language where string concatenation is probably not a best practice in the first place

On the SQL injection issue, yes, it's true that 99.9% of users wouldn't ever know. But the question is how much damage the other 0.1% could do.

1:37 AM
@Edward the question John's asking is what's the difference in cases where no SQL can possibly be injected...

Depending on who's going to be using the code you write, you might also consider the potential damage to your own professional reputation if the code is audited for security holes.

say you have an array of 3 integer literals, you select one randomly, and you concatenate that into a "where id =" clause
nothing can possibly get injected or break
so the question is, in cases like that, is there a benefit to parameterized query
i'd say yes, the benefit is consistency

Hey cr!

@DaggNabbit Agreed. It's a consistency benefit and a "yes, I know what I'm doing" badge, but not a real SQL injection prevention

1:40 AM
Hello @AlexL
@kleinfreund Can I get your opinions on this piece of code? It's a logo for a project I'm about to release.
Oops, that was an old link. What an ugly logo that would have made.

I know @Jamal. Just disclaiming that I don't understand the intricacies of any OOP design in C++
Generally though, I think it wasn't a great design choice and I'm personally wondering if it's not example code after seeing OPs comments.

@ckuhn203 That's fine. If you were wrong, you would've been told. I too don't understand OOP design (or any design) too well, thus I was only addressing the naming.

@syb0rg wouldn't svg make more sense? Or are you just doing it that way for fun?

@DaggNabbit I had the same thought.

@DaggNabbit This was somewhat for fun, plus it should scale the same as an svg.
Any comments on the design itself?

1:49 AM
but it doesn't scale because everything is measured in px
^ that would be my main comment
and vendor prefixes on border radius in only one place

I've never really used CSS/HTML on a production level, so this is all new to me.
@DaggNabbit So if I were to continue using CSS, how would I modify it to scale?

@syb0rg i'd try to use percentages, you'll need a container with fixed height and width and position:relative
then ideally you can just resize the container and everything else resizes with it

@DaggNabbit So would the container in this case be .logo?

hmm, yes it would
idk if the % thing will work for the border trick though
getting those non-axial edges

2:09 AM
@DaggNabbit I'm clueless as to where I would even start with that, being a newbie and all.
As the code stands, it was just hacked together by me to work.

@syb0rg i don't think border sizes can be specified in %, so it wouldn't work

@DaggNabbit SVG is the way to go then, I guess.
Time to learn how to use Inkscape.

it is, for sure
inkscape is quite nice
and svg is really pretty cool as it integrates with styles and scripts and the DOM and everything
you could have the electron circling around or whatever :)

@DaggNabbit Animation, you mean?

yes, if you wanted to
i wouldn't leave it running all the time but little mouseover animations can be nice

2:19 AM
Well, time to get to work with Inkscape. Bye all!

The other nice thing about an SVG logo is that it's easily used with things like Apache fop for printed material as well.
@syb0rg have fun!

damn, he left before i could tell him to use the star tool for his main hexagon shape

I'd just fire up vim for a logo that simple.

ehh, it's just a star shape and 5 circles, could do it in inkscape in about 5 mins
lining that electron up with its ring would be a bit of a pain by hand
and getting all the coords right on that hex shape

When you say "by hand" do you mean with Inkscape or with a text editor?

2:24 AM
with a text editor
because the corner of the ring's bounding box is not going to be anywhere near the the little circle you're placing on it... and you have to account for stroke width to get it lined up right... much easier to use inkscape, just drag it where you want with edge snapping turned on
not to mention the hex shape

It's not that complex. Just a little trivial math. Anway, since the ring is centered, all you'd have to do to place the electron is use the same coordinate as the ring's radius and rotate it through an angle.
animation could just vary that angle

Upvote for this question, please? The OP may be back to upvote (and I'm surprised I was the only one to answer).

@Jamal It's hard to know how to help somebody quite that green.

@Jamal

@Edward I see. It's just that I'm used to such "easy" code receiving lots of answers.

2:38 AM
@Jamal I think it's not so much "easy" as it is "bad" code that receives lots of answers...

@Phrancis Yes, I think that's right, which is unfortunate.

I would really like to get some love on this one: codereview.stackexchange.com/a/56593/42632
@Edward but then again, that's why CR is here right?

@Phrancis True. He is, after all, a beginner. I didn't get set straight about my C++ until I joined this site.

Questions like this are much more interesting to me and tend to occupy more of my time.

Eeek, 6 more answer upvotes for me until 2k! :D

2:43 AM
@Edward Unfortunately, I'm the opposite as I'm still closer to beginner myself (hence my large tag score). I absolutely don't answer these to rep-whore; I answer them because I know how to (and this is a different case then answering crappy questions on SO).

@Jamal It's very useful for those who have more recently learned a skill to help teach it.
They still remember concepts and skills that were difficult or confusing.

And I hope next semester's programming classes will help expand my reviewing capabilities as well. If I had the knowledge, I'd answer all the C++ zombies at some point.

@Edward I think it's common though for beginners to be afraid to teach others because of the lack of self confidence in their skills

@AlexL you should perhaps accept an answer on this one

@Phrancis I did?
Thanks for that @santa

2:47 AM
My bad

@AlexL That's probably true in some venues.

Missed that check mark

@Jamal Why'd you link to that question?
Is it close to Christmas or something?

^ that

2:50 AM
@AlexL Eh, I'll grab a screenshot (unless you can somehow get to 2K soon).
When you link to a deleted answer, anyone without moderator tools will be taken to the question instead.

I think CR could use more voting, and heck, if someone is close to a milestone, that's a mighty good reason to go "like" some questions and answers

@Jamal Ohhh, okay
@Phrancis I try and vote as much as I can. I get upset when I stumble upon a real nice q/a and find I've already voted!

IKR

By the way, I have rolled back one of your older questions as it invalidated answer.

@Jamal Saw that, thanks
Wasn't aware of that standard back then
Never went back to clear up because I forgot I did that

2:54 AM
My first answer, which sucked.

Ohh I'm at 1200 even

(moreso before the edit, at least)

@Jamal Oh I seeee...
That's what I'm talking about too. The beginner not knowing the full scope of the language, and therefore not having confidence in answering

The newbies tend to participate with comments, I would guess.

@Edward Probably, either that or they lurk in the darkness and pop out with a star studded answer

2:57 AM
I still find it much harder to answer on SO, although my answers would look more quality than your typical "try this" answer.

@Jamal There's too much competition to be the first to answer, and I think that lowers the quality of some answers

I don't know about you guys, but I stumbled on CR completely by accident. Probably originally from SO, though I never spent much time on there until recently...

I have sort of won the draw a few times, but it still didn't feel satisfying. SO's just not the place for me.

@AlexL There also tends to be a lot of voting for the quickest answer rather than the best one, I think.

@Phrancis I personally liked the smaller community on CR as opposed to SO. I felt like I could make more of an impact here when I first joined the SE network

2:59 AM
And so many answers are duplicates, especially on "you're missing a curly brace" answers.

@AlexL ditto

I have made a lot more downvotes there than here.

@Phrancis I thought to myself I had a chance at becoming one of the big-shots xD

Too many crappy questions and crappy answers.

@Edward It's the questions where the answers are right in the docs that bother me the most

3:01 AM
@Edward I have thousands of downvotes on SO.

@AlexL better start working if you want to catch up to Jon Skeet

@Phrancis My Jon Skeet comparison graph isn't very astonishing

That makes two of us
public function getTopTierItems(){

I think only the OP can "accept" :|

@Phrancis I know :(

@Phrancis you may already have done so, but consider calling the utility to complain about the crappy customer service. There's also the option of complaining to your state's Utility Regulatory Commission. Mentioning the latter to the former might get their attention. :)

Q: Refactoring three property methods

RobertI am trying to refactor these three methods into one: public StatusReturn UpdateProperty(int id, int onlineReportId) { //Yes I realize I should not be using ref variables but the queryPermissions is an external dll. var webQueryInputProperty = new WebQueryInputProperty();...

sadly my answer completely invalidates the already given answer/rant
> I am trying to refactor these three methods into one - So what you are waiting for? Take the parts of the methods which are the same and put them in one/two separate methods. Don't expect us to do it for you. You should at least show some effort.

"de-factoring" thats a new one!

3:21 AM
hehe
what's the opposite of "refactor" anyway?
"spaghettify" comes to mind...

@Mat'sMug maybe ?

so, besides "merge methods", what would be other "un-factorings"?

Reinventing the wheel?

"merge classes" and "merge interfaces", of course

In general, adding complexity

3:25 AM
the opposite of "rename" is a toughie
hi @mjolka!

@Mat'sMug How about "name properly to begin with"?

but naming is hard!
oh I know - "foobarize"!
as in I foobarized the names in that method

Sounds like it should be a curse word

hmm... it is an F-word..

I guess Foo is as good of a name as <?php this->v
or DECLARE @v INT

3:30 AM
I bet <?php this->v is more frequent than we think

does anyone in America/Canada ever say swear word?
or is it always curse?

@Mat'sMug hello :)

@Yuushi generally it's just a **** word

What the bb code to make a button?

"cuss" sounds even worse

I've heard curse/swear/cuss used interchangeably
"curse" does sound like it's some form of witchcraft though

"cuss" sounds like you're 14
3
and you've been told by your parents not to swear
maybe that's just to my Australian ears though
I think people here just swear more in general

@Yuushi You would be surprised

@Phrancis Perhaps. I'm guessing there's a pretty big difference between say, Boston or New York, and Salt Lake City

Yeah the Mormons don't swear much

3:42 AM
@Jamal, do you know the syntax to make a button in the text editor?

"catastroiphic [sic] failure" isn't a very meaningful/informative message to display when a coordinatesArray's length is different than 2. Perhaps "Coordinates are expected to be for points X and Y only." would be a more useful message, so when you try to pass in a Z coordinate value, you don't get a catastrophic failure message. Also I would avoid calling types the same as other types in namespaces in use, System.Convert clashes here - and your class should be static if it only exposes static members. — Mat's Mug 27 secs ago

What the is an accordion navigation bar anyways?

isn't that a config of CLI, if I read your question that is what pop's in mine mind
don't know if it's the correct cli : wp-cli.org/config

Not quite. When I enter commands, e.g. for npm, it checks the Path environment variable for ressources.
This is more a OS-wide setting. This accounts for cmd.exe, Git Bash, whatever one uses.

did you closed your cmd screen after setting the path?

Yup.
I tried with trailing backslashes (...\npm\ instead of \npm).

Any people with opinions here?
I'm working on a web service over at work, and I need to send a request and read the reply
I'm doing it in the 'proper' way, using libraries, etc. But hitting showstoppers (bugs/weird behaviour) all the time
A colleague of mine does it all with raw http requests and xml parsing (and sometimes just discarding data because else it wouldn't parse), and he gets it working
I'm thinking my approach is better because it doesn't make assumptions/delete data/etc., but his approach works, mine doesn't

9:33 AM
first question, is the webservice good? cause if your colleague must do data dropping for correct parsing, you hit the same wall with the frameworks

I don't think the webservice is correct, but opinions vary
Biggest current problem is that the framework (JAX-WS) simply fails to parse for some reason currently, while his solution still works

that's what I think also. if they don't send a proper xml, you could never parse it correctly with frameworks

Did you identify what prevents your framework from parsing?

Unfortunately I didn't identif it
I have two leads at the moment though
First is that they send their organization data (in list form) with type "anyType", while you expect a full definition of that type in the WSDL of the SOAP web service
Latter is that some record somewhere is empty - didn't verify that yet
I think if they (other people) would fix their web service to include full definitions, that then a lot of troubles would be gone

I would investigate the issue and either give them a bug report or try to work around (if the problems are only minor)

I've already sent a request to give the WSDL a full definition, but it may still take a while and have no response on it yet
But I also want to know why exactly it goes wrong on my end

can't you see the xml?

doesn't the parser give you a hint?

No hint :/
I'm not too convinced by the JAX-WS (RI) technology either, looking for an alternative, but no clue which one as I dont'want to run a whole web server inside my application

mine approach should be => print out response xml somewhere.
Check if it's a legit xml.
Create test case with that xml.

I can still run the response through an XML validator

and then can you alter the xml to investigate what's wrong if the parser doesn't give hints
and it validates?

on one tool it validates, other doesn't

@skiwi: Maybe you are doing something wrong with using the tool?

It's one of my leads that raises an error due to undefined namespace

did you try to give it a known to be valid input?

Q: XSLT 2.0: Crawl HTML and add links

PaulbBackground: I have 4 GB of text data dispersed in 250,000 html files. I want to interlink the files with <a> for the reader to click on. I have a 12 MB file of regex patterns to identify the <a> sites. Situation: I have developed of working proof of concept, three files: an XML file of regex p...

I can edit this issue out (and in) in the database to check for sure
This really isn't a schema to monkey-code against though, so I need to get the WSDL fixed as well
I don't even currently have a definition of what it exactly returns, so it might as well break in future if I monkey-code against it
Improved version neither works
What really worries me is how few experts on JAX-WS there are around
If nobody has expertise with some library, then I don't think it's a good sign...

@chillworld That's on the other side, no access there :(
