@rolfl what happened to Santa?

Oh, finger slipped, thanks Santa! (again).
how did that just get two votes... who's here who's not speaking ... ;-) ?
And, hadn't Simon/Mat's already upvoted it?

What got two votes?

the one with +25?
somehow I had missed it

it was 24 before i posted ... ;-)
> You've earned the "Good Answer" badge (Answer score of 25 or more) for "Reverse a String in Java".

I have yet to accomplish that.

12:04 AM
For me, I go through 1-vote-short, and it's often disappointing now....
I often have voted for the question/answer already

Yeah, I had missed that one @rolfl
@rolfl I have the same problem.

Especially the more-than-10-rep ones... because I normally see them in 1-vote-short for the nice question/answer badges.
Huh, well, thanks ;-)

@SimonAndréForsberg me too

I also often see the necromancer and revivals before they hit 10 too.

I have now officially answered 3x more on CR than on SO.

Hmm... I have 5 votes and 23h 50min left...

@SimonAndréForsberg same here....
@rolfl that query is a vote-eater.

10 upvotes already!

A: About coding style in for loop in C

Simon André ForsbergOf those two, the second variant is better in my opinion because of the increased spacing. However, both of them are horrible because of the amount of information pressed into those few lines. I think your loop should be converted into a while instead. int Bw_1 = (2 - Drctn) * (Drctn % 2); int...

424 mugs on the wall!

so 2 more upvotes and you won't find the wall?

lol
(Really, I'm still laughing!)
I just got an idea for a SEDE query... @rolfl how easy would it be to create a query to track the mugs on the wall between two specific users?

Thanks, Santa!

12:15 AM
Should not be too hard...

For me it would be :)

I think I have it alredy, but it will be week-old data... right?

Yes, of course.

wouldn't the reputation races query work for that if you only supplied 2 users?

I was thinking that the query would only output a +/- number (plotted in a nice graph). Not the actual reputation(s), only the wall.

Q: Is there a better way to write these two nested loops in Erlang?

Some time ago, I used two nested for loops in C# to solve it but, solving the same problem in Erlang, I asked myself if there is a better way to write something similar to the two nested fo...

So, in Objective-C, there's two data types that suddenly became quite annoying in Swift. CGFloat and NSInteger.
These are both typedefs for different datatypes depending on whether the device is 64-bit or 32-bit.
On 32-bit, it's float or int, but on 64-bit, it's double or long.
It was never an issue in Objective-C, because Objective-C will cast back and forth between the two without complaint.
But Swift will only cast if you tell it to. So if you send a float to a method that expects a CGFloat, it'll work fine on 32-bit devices, but crash on 64-bit devices (because it's not a double).
You can create variables of type `CGFloat` no problem. But it seems most people are letting their types be defined implicitly.

var myFloat = 3.14159f

versus:

var myCGFloat : CGFloat = 3.14159

type safety is your friend, embrace it ;)

Well, I'm fine with it. I just think that Objective-C developers will not explicitly set their variable type as CGFloat.
So we'll get non-stop SO questions about this crash on device but not the other
Since it's something that you never worried about in Objective-C, and Swift now lets variables get their type implicitly.
And not a single Foundation method takes an int, long, float, double, or any sort of unsigned int argument. They all take either NSInteger, NSUInteger, or CGFloat.
I think I'll probably get into the habit of always making sure to explicitly declare the variable type upon declaration.

the IDE should enforce/recommend that..

1:22 AM
var myVar = 3 is perfectly valid. It defines a variable called myVar with a value of 3, and in this case, a type of Int since 3 is an integer.
If you want a double with value of 3, you can do var myVar = 3.0, or var myVar : Double = 3
Or if you want a float, you can do var myVar : Float = 3 or var myVar = 3.0f.
But the Foundation typedef-ed types will never be implicitly assigned. You have to explicitly declare them as that type. The only way to get a CGFloat with value of 3 is as such: var myVar : CGFloat = 3
The only way to implicitly create a variable with type CGFloat I guess would be to create it as you're getting a return from a function that returns a CGFloat.
For example:
var myVar = someFuncReturningCGFloat()

@Mat'sMug Thanks for the reply man

hey @Mehrad! Welcome to The 2nd Monitor!
you're welcome :)

@Mat'sMug I owe you an apology for the argument happened the other day

no worries

In defense for how frustrating it becomes sometime I should say I used to develop and spend lots of time after I graduated from my Software Engineering degree. But I left from since .Net 2 to do a second degree in Electrical Engineering and now I got back to coding again since I found a job with a good combination of both and maybe because I can't live without coding :)
This gap was big enough that now everything looks new and I ask some silly looking question sometimes
You guys need to bare with me for a while until I get my head around these changes happened :P

1:39 AM
wasn't a silly question, it's just I would have liked to see the actual late-binding code where you load the DLL you were talking about - that's why I had voted to close your question as "unclear".. and then I thought "oh, wth, I'll just review what's there!", and retracted the close vote.

One funny thing before I leave. The other day I asked Captain Obvious to give me a hand when you left to sleep until somebody told me it's a bot : )))))

@Mehrad good to hear, I hope you stick around - this site has a lot to offer!
(TBH I'm kinda lagging behind too, I hardly fiddled with the .net 4.5 features)

btw, i've been asked this question in the comments to my answer here http://codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/54106/concurrent-blocking-tasks-in-a-backgroundworker/54111?noredirect=1#comment94329_54111
which I am not 100% on it. Would appreciate it if you could have a quick look. I barely used locks and I am also curious to know the answer.

ha! I had upvoted that one, tasks are available from 4.0 onward I think though
I believe a Task<T> would return a T
If OP could return an IEnumerable<T> I believe you could even yield return the task results

@Mat'sMug too much change aye... but the more I know it the more I am enjoying it. Specially with this Async / await... Man I remember the days I used to do the same thing on C++. It used to pages and pages of coding and bugs crawling over it... Now it's just simple as...
I am pretty sure you're right. I wasn't sure it was 4.0 or 4.5 but I think they shaved the syntax and improved it 4.5
I was thinking of a yeild() as a solution as well but as I said I never used it in the new syntax then I didn't want to make a fun of myself suggesting something that I never used myself

It's cool that you're reviewing others' code too ;)

feel free to edit my answer or even put a new one. I bet it'll be useful for me as well since I am gonna get to use it in the similar situation sooner or later. Working on this Bluetooth tester recently for our company which this new async syntax came to my rescue.

Let me rephrase that.... the WOW query is unreliable because the comments may well be deleted on other sites and they are not on CR.

Hey guys, I have a badge question

hey Alex

Yes... ?

For the specific tag badges, are upvotes the "total score"?

upvotes on non-wiki answers, yes

2:44 AM
Ahhhh
wiki = meta ?

No, wiki is different. You likely do not need to worry about that

Well now I'm curious!

it used to be that if yu edit-abused your answers/questions, they would be converted to 'community wiki'.
This no longer happens automatically, and it is moderator applied now.
Let me find a link....

you get tag badges on meta too ;)

@Mat'sMug Upvotes on questions don't count toward badge progress?

nope

Interesting.

And down-votes on answers count against you

2:49 AM
and tag badges are revocable, too

@rolfl Thanks for that link
Do upvotes on meta posts affect rep?

No.
There are now only 3 unanswered Objective-C questions, and I've just started a vote-to-close on one of them.

no, but they affect your meta-tag-badge scores ;)

Or downvotes for that matter...

Not your rep, but there is a participation page on meta that has a loose correlation to meta activity

Alex, this quuery is designed for a different purpose, but it does the same calculation for badge scores as the tag badges: data.stackexchange.com/codereview/query/166672/…

@rolfl needs a post count though

Hmm ... it does.
and it only hots the top-40 tags
@AlexL - if you go to your profile, and to the tags-tab, if you hover over a tag it will give you your tag score less the CW posts.

3:15 AM
Down to two unanswered Objective-C questions, one of them having 3 close votes.
And there are 3 unanswered questions tagged and without the tag. Haven't looked at these at all yet. Some of them probably need the tag added.
So, 4 total questions that are unanswered and don't have close votes.

Nice, nhgrif .... it reminds me that java crept back on to the tagged zombie graph
But, this week it is gone again. nice.

3:33 AM
This question appears to be off-topic because there are only about 3 lines of code here written by the questioner that could be reviewed. And the main question here seems to be looking for a better way of doing what this library is doing. But the library itself isn't posted as part of the question (so the code wanting to be reviewed isn't here) and it can't be, because it wasn't written by the person posting the question. — nhgrif 1 hour ago

But he didn't post LibraryA in his question (so that's not the code up for review), and he can't, because LibraryA isn't his code.
And because the library isn't his, it's not helpful for example, if I tell him that the completed: argument should instead be called completion:.
And also working against the question is the fact that it's borderline example code--just look in the completion block--this is allegedly real code that downloads images and just throws them away?
This is the only part of his code that can be reviewed:
// start index of array
int startIndx = ((indx - PREFETCH_NO_OF_IMAGES) > 0)? (indx - PREFETCH_NO_OF_CELLS):0;

// end index of array
int endIndx = ((indx + PREFETCH_NO_OF_IMAGES) < [urlArray count])? (indx + PREFETCH_NO_OF_CELLS):[urlArray count];

// go from indx to indx +/- prefetch_no_of_cells/array count/zero, whichever is possible
for(int i = startIndx; i < endIndx; i++)
The rest is either calls to the library methods or example code.
Anyway, is there a way to view questions that have TagA but don't show questions that have both TagA and TagB?

Ah, thanks. I also am going to look at Objective-C - iOS and Objective-C - OSX.

Not necessarily. The library is structured in layers: there's an SDWebImageManager layer and an SDWebImagePrefetcher layer that uses it. It's possible to implement a better prefetcher without plagiarizing the built-in prefetcher.

Yes, you could, but he'd have to actually write the prefetcher code and post that for review--he hasn't.

Agreed, it's a pretty weak question, which is why I'm chatting rather than commenting.

He could rewrite the entire functionality of the library without plagiarizing and get that reviewed if he wanted.
But again, he'd have to write and post that code.
This question is borderline "give meh teh codeZ"
Since he wants a reviewer to rewrite a better version of the library
I have to leave for work.

A: Breaking after one of several string replaces occur

BergiThis seems to be a fine case for a loop over the expressions: function format_input(input) { // decouple DOM things from pure functionality! input.value = format_number(input.value); } function format_number(str) { var replacements = [ [/regex1/, 'replace1'], [/regex2...

sigh I am an idiot.

I tried using <img class="card" src="http://www.zomis.net/cards/res/cardHearts4.png" /> but that didn't look very good

why not?

@Mat'sMug You'll cut off CR time! (Catching up on news!)

yeah, I'll have to. but I'll keep reviewing code, no worries :)
@SimonAndréForsberg well, remove the border and ...using images for all the cards would help, no?

Q: PHP: string sanitisation function

GhostRiderI am a novice PHP programmer. I have a search function on my website. In addition, elsewhere I have a place where users can submit categories for their posts. I want the categories to have an uppercase first letter and the rest lower case. I know there far more complex ways to secure a user input...

@ckuhn203 yeah, I had to re-read the SO post about lexer vs parser, and then it occurred to me; the first thing we need to do is to "tokenize" the entire code file - I have almost everything picked up at this point, it's only missing instructions with assignments and procedure/function calls. Then the parser can grab the tokens and use regex to extract syntax tokens, and build the tree.
the code is so much simpler that way, too!
the hardest part is to account for the mismatch between line of code and instruction - but I'll have tests for that pretty soon. And then the lexer can be refactored.

I ended up re-implementing my vba version in c# just as a "I need to do something I already know how to do in order to learn this new language." kind of thing.
Almost done with it. I just need to figure out how to make the stupid thing com visible.

right-click your project > properties > Application > assembly information... > click the make assembly COM-visible checkbox ;)

1:34 PM
Seriously?

yup

I hate stupid people who write stupid confusing blogs.
(I consider myself to be one of those people, so it's ok.)

it puts an attribute in your assemblyinfo.cs file, basically.
[assembly: ComVisible(true)]
(along with a GUID, but I believe the GUID attribute is present by default anyway)
// The following GUID is for the ID of the typelib if this project is exposed to COM
[assembly: Guid("340ee81c-c4e5-46a3-9cc1-5950851f4dc5")]

So I was trying to do by hand what the check box would do for me.... awesome.

it's actually more complicated to find the checkbox than to just edit the attribute in AssemblyInfo.cs though ;)
they burried it well!
