I like the merge conflict there.

@skiwi i really prefer whitespace merges... where the whole block gets marked and split in the middle...
preferrably when merging inline..

I don't know what a whitespace merge is..

where the only difference is two whitespace chars...
and it fucks up the whole structure for it..

@skiwi ^^^^^^^stuff like that..

Ah, Netbeans does it like that @Vogel612
I prefer the one from Android more though, the one I just shown

hum... well eclipse does that too...

Q: PDFs split by bar-code

Nilesh sureshI have a PDF File containing 6 Pages. 1st Page has a Bar-code, 2nd too and 3rd and 4th belong to 2nd Page, 5th has another Bar-code and the last one has none, so the split should be, Page 1, Page 2-4, Page 5-6.

@Vogel612 That's probably one of the reasons Code::Blocks deletes every trailing space whenever you save.

@Morwenn it only gets worse when the ppl in your project have different Eclipse formattings and different Eclipse versions installed...
this breaks everything..

10:30 AM
"I love to replace each tab by 7 spaces!"

don't remind me....
also I really love that one colleague of mine...

XD

@Inject IController controller
on Data Layer..

Wow.

I had the idea yesterday to create some variant of git that learns the codestyle of people, and automatically converts between people's code conventions

10:32 AM
@skiwi that is impossible

It's not
!

okay, you go for it..

I don't know how to impement it though :P

It's impossible: some people love to be inconsistent.
2

But I figured that if you give an user a file that has all code conventions in it, if statements, switch statements, etc.

10:33 AM
No they do

And let the user 'fix' that
Then you have a template of how people write their code

@skiwi that's something you never let the user do..
just use IDE formatting help
and have a teamwide standard formatting

If people insist on writing differently within a team, then such a soltuion could help.

Team-wide standard is he only hing I have had success with in the past

the rest is too abstract for git to understand without understanding the language in itself..

10:34 AM
Of course, I am talking about for example a Java layer for git

@skiwi then have them merge it themselves once...

If people don't use .java exentensions for Java files, well, then screw them.

@skiwi git is not only used in JAVA context anymore...
and if you made it extensible, you could just write your own IDE instead...

@Vogel612 Is that 'sarcastic' ?

@rolfl is there so much of a difference?? you'd just need to add javac and you got your ide..
not much graphics, but hey ;)

10:39 AM
Was git ever 'only used in JAVA context'?

i wouldn't know..
very new to git myself..

very much, trivia interesting.

10:40 AM
in other words, it was written for massively-distributed source control of large 'C' projects... ;-)

For other languages the converted would just need to know all possible extensions and need to have a file that has all possible language constructs.

"just" you say...

I mean, we're going to need such a thing either way when we can write code by just thinking about it.

Many C++ projects moved to git. Boost for example.

Well, I'm not going to make a template for them ;)

10:42 AM
@skiwi all possible extensions? The ".m" extension alone has too many meanings

They can do it themselves however
@amon I think extensions without a directory have context, it could be as narrowed down as that if neccessary
Well it was just a brainfart :)

I was thinking again about the "common reviews", the small things that we have all said at least 4 or 5 times for a review of code written in a given programming language.
Has something been decided yet?

afaik still hitting the heads over the format

Q: Leaky Abstractions

Mat's MugI have this interface for a Unit of Work, are there any issues with it? public interface IUnitOfWork : IDisposable { void Commit(); void Rollback(); }

I think I'm gonna pester the Java8 compiler with lambdas and this:

that's the one for c#..

10:49 AM
class UnrelatedClass implements UnrelatedInterfaceOne, UnrelatedInterfaceTwo {
    @Override
    public void unrelate() {
        System.out.println("Unrelated");
    }
}

interface UnrelatedInterfaceOne {
    public void unrelate();
}

interface UnrelatedInterfaceTwo {
    public void unrelate();
}

wait what...
and now I thought you had a classic diamond problem at first..

@skiwi nothing wrong with that.

A: 'Canonical' questions to help address common issues

rolflCombining a few things here.... Tag wikis. Absolutely. The tag wiki should be used as an entry point to 'faq' type issues for that language/tag. Using meta.... Absolutely not. Single Question for all issues with one tag. Like this.... for C# No. All questions should conform to the on-topic...

@Morwenn Feel free to take the initiative. =)

There's nothing wrong with @rolfl I was just brainfarting something
@rolfl There is an interesting SO question related to Java 8 though:
1
Q: Collectors.groupingBy doesn't accept null keys

marcgIn Java 8, this works: Stream<Class> stream = Stream.of(ArrayList.class); HashMap<Class, List<Class>> map = (HashMap)stream.collect(Collectors.groupingBy(Class::getSuperclass)); But this doesn't: Stream<Class> stream = Stream.of(List.class); HashMap<Class, List<Class>> map = (HashMap)stream.c...

@200_success Oh, I did not see that "tag wiki" thing. That one is a good idea.
Oh, it seems that inline markup does not work in tag description excerpts...

11:16 AM
@skiwi - I would file that as a bug against Java8 ;-)
But, there must be a way to simplify the SSCE

It isn't mine though, so I cannot really file it

@SimonAndréForsberg Hello

@rolfl Hi Monkey!

Bwahahahaha .... got you ... (dmn it, Watson is working much better at the moment, but I am behind on your review ;-( )

you got me, or you got Watson?

12:29 PM
Well, for two days I have said 'I'm working on your review'.... and, well, it's not done.
I have been saying the same thing to my bosses, at least I have tangible progress there.

@rolfl Would you say that reviewing my code is easier because I provide good context, a GitHub link and you know my skill level, or harder because I tend to have a whole lot of code? :)

Truth, your code is hard to review because:
1. it is in Java8 (so I have to learn some things as I go)
2. It does not have 'easy' things to point out (i.e. it is mostly good/great code, so you have to look deeper for issues)
3. there is a lot of it, and you have to understand the interactions of the classes
I have pulled the code from GitHub because finding the relationships between the code when in CR is hard.

Good, then I'm doing my job right :) But I haven't posted any Java 8 question on CR yet. All my recent Java questions have been Java 6 or 7. (mostly 6 I believe)

It is made harder by not being able to easily run the code. There are times I like being able to step through the code.

For the AI code I have provided a main method in... umm... somewhere.... hold on...

12:34 PM
Really, to do your question justice, I need to sit at it for a solid hour without interruption.

meh, you're welcome, but as I say, it's not done yet... ;-) (I did the first question, but never really started on the second, though I went through all the code once....)

It's ok :)

More rep on SO than CR today.... in fact, 0 rep today on CR.
20K makes you lazy
11

Yes, I like your comments on the first question. Haven't accepted yet but I will later on - gotta read through it once more - both your comments and my code.

12:38 PM
(actually, 20K does not make you lazy, but getting to 20K means you 'forget' to do other things that should be done).

Like.... answering questions?
            Object o = ((DefaultMutableTreeNode)(DefaultMutableTreeNode)nodes[i].getUserObject()).getUserObject();
Since when does casting an object twice help anything?

Where is that? (and never....) ;-)

My code at work of course, what other code that I have to deal with would look like that? :)

Well, just checking that the code is not part of something I forgot to answer ;-)

morning

12:50 PM
It is, where I am, at least.
And morning for you too?

indeed about 9

(I have to cut out the witty crap... it's getting old).
(and it probably was not that witty anyway).

:P

File the bug, skiwi!

@rolfl Yeah, of course... a CR question would be the other alternative...

12:51 PM
And home...
Reading up and then prototesting another possible bug/issue in Java8
@rolfl I'll try to into simplificationifying that piece of code

'simplificationifying', I like that word. But perhaps it could be 'simplificationified' a bit more?
2

G'Afternoon @SimonAndréForsberg
I'm trying to come with an SSCEE for something, but it is hard to come up with random interface names, that yet still have a meaning nor overlap with any existing library interface
Basically I need two different interfaces, that both use the same method name for an action that means something totally different.

I am working on a SSCE for the bug as well.

Or maybe my masterplan doesn't work out... I'm trying to break the default methods in Java 8.
For the SSCE on that bug, I want to get rid of the Class<?> but for that I need something legit that can return null
And the SSCE should still look legit

1:14 PM
'morning!

I like how I see people saying "morning" all day long in this room :)

meh, it's always morning somewhere on Earth, right?

That's exactly what I like :D

Yeah, and you copied the content from SO .... but, all things considered, there's almost nothing on SO about C11.

Since maaaany people still use C89 and almost noone knows about C11, I bet that answerers will avoid C11 unless the question is explicitly tagged as using it.
I copied the content from the C99 tag actually.

3:19 PM
Oh, I thought it was :stackoverflow.com/tags/c11/info

Oh, I only wrote the "excerpt".

but it totally is not ;-)
I figure that on SO, if a tag is only used 143 times, it is essentially non-existant... and whether it has any use on CR.

Actually, I tagged it C11 since I think that my code can be improved using _Generic but I don't know how. That's a hint :p

1. created the Enum with one set of names

4. now wnats to read the existing files

@rolfl It looks wrong. I'll edit it. :P
Wait wait wait. Some people actually approved the C++ edit?!? I hope they're not regular C++ answerers, otherwise they should revoke their tag score and associated rep.

@rolfl Seriously, why would anyone want to use Java when there's Scala. :-)

@Donald.McLean When writing Java, I have no bad conscience for using null, or mutable data structures

@amon Neither do I when writing Scala. Sometimes they're the best thing to use.

3:53 PM
@Donald.McLean I'm starting to consider Scala more and more... it seems like they have some support for GWT and Android, and if Scala has both that and Lambdas and default methods, I might be veeeeery interested :)

Wait... why do we have a new tag?

@SimonAndréForsberg Scala is just Java with more more, more better, and better more.

@Jamal Dunno. @konijn should explain.

The lines I have are made up of an ordered array of points, which are just data structures with values for x, y and z. The lines are no necessarily straight. The subline does not need to be going in the same direction ...

@Mat'sMug your Typo comment is obsolete by now.

@Vogel612 true, but I still would like to know if he's overriding Object.Equals (he says it's Equal, which means he's not - the question would also be better if the code included the method's signature. I'll delete and rephrase that comment.

sure thing ;)
also afaik there is no Object.Equals that can be called without Object.

I know.. I'm hoping to get to understand why he's not doing point.Equals(line[i]) - has to be in his Equal implementation.

Thanks :)

well that would be a nice review answer then ;)

But I won't be there for long.

Q: Generic Repository, UnitOfWork and IOC container

user960567I am stuck to define a generic repository with AutoFac IOC container. I am keeping thing very simple and only showing relevent information. I have a BaseEntity public abstract class BaseEntity { public int Id { get; set; } } IRepository public interface IRepository<TEntity> where TEntit...

Well. I'm leaving. I have music to compose and a book to finish.
See you later :)

Q: Eliminate AABB variables

Tips48I have an AABB that I've coded, but at the moment it is very redundant. I feel like there are variables that I can get rid of. I need the AABB to be very fast, and I'd like it to be more lightweight than it is. #pragma once #include "Engine.h" // Collision #include "Vec2D.h" // End Collision ...

^^ new tag?

Yup, the third one today...

@Mat'sMug you wanna answer the Subline question??
else I link current answer writer to your nice idea of overriding .Equals()

@Vogel612 I'll post a narrow answer strictly about .Equals, you can take the rest ;)

4:38 PM
@Mat's Mug I don't have the rest...

How do I explain this?

Q: Are there new arguments to use getters and setters since Java 8?

skiwiAs the title says, there has always been quite a discussion about getters and setters in any programming language, so also Java. The question is the following: Are there any new arguments since Java 8 got released? An example of an already existing argument is that getters and setters encapsula...

My answer is more popular than my question

@skiwi you little rep-whore..

I'm already maxed out today by now :p
It's still genuine question

why did I vote then...

That's evil

@skiwi I don't want to be rude or anything, but as most self-answered question, the answer is what you probably had in mind first, so it is of better quality than your question.

@Mat'sMug update concerning equals:

@skiwi The Onceler made a comment about how you never can tell what some people will buy.

Ah, I was just about to ask about Equals there. Unfortunatly the Point object is from an API, and I can't update it. — djcmm476 1 min ago

@Vogel612 yeah saw that

just making sure it doesn't slip past the radar ;))

@Jamal You can delete the tag as you wish, but I've seen a few questions where the review gets much more intense once the reviewer knows that this will be used in class

@Vogel612 what do you think?

A: Speed up algorithm to detect if one line is subline of another

Mat's MugThat random static bool Equal method with an optional parameter, is confusing. There's already object.Equals with that name and functionality - what you need here is custom equality behavior... and that is achieved by overriding object.Equals: public struct LinePoint { public Point ApiPoint...

@Marc-Andre That could be a totally valid reason... I didn't word the question that epicly either, because I wasn't able to.

Love it

@konijn I'll come back to it later.

@Vogel612 I hardly ever code a struct, I hope I haven't boo-boo'd with the auto-property

4:51 PM
lol I yet have to see a struct anywhere else than on SO or here...
sooo.

@skiwi Most of the time, what happen is the OP writes the question to fit the answer, and not as a question by itself. But it's really hard to do, and you've been able to collect many votes I can say mission accomplish !

@Malachi no need to strike half of your answer, there's a 5-minute grace period to edit your post without leaving a revision trace...

@Mat'sMug there is a bug in his code @Mat'sMug
it's a logic bug, I added it to the end....

that's possible, I only glanced at the OP's code - Olivier's answer deserves more votes (I'm out of ammo!), be it only for identifying the actual O(n^2) complexity issue
