@Morwenn Why?

@JerryCoffin For highly critical production code of course.

@Morwenn Uh....right.

So uhhh... if you could tell me what kind of critical system is it, so I can avoid it at all costs, that would be great. :D

That was a joke. I'm doing that because it's past midnight and I have nothing productive to do.

Well, for what little it's worth, I'm sure what you need is to make it a little faster (speed is undoubtedly it's greatest area of need). I may be able to help a tiny bit with that. stackoverflow.com/a/6853750/179910

12:09 AM
I was going for the following syntax:
apply<'+', '+', '-', '+', '+', '>', '+', '+', '<', '+'>(buffer);

@Morwenn You might consider Nemo's answer to the same question.

I have got the feeling that whoever tries to implement brainfuck tries to write a fucked up implementation. That's great.

@Morwenn Would there be any point in a really straightforward implementation?

@JerryCoffin I don't think so.
But brainfuck is not half as fun as SNUSP is.

12:28 AM
@Morwenn I can't say I've ever tried it. I thought Unlambda was pretty cool though.

That seems almost unreadable.

hi all

@Morwenn Only "almost unreadable"? If so, it's clearly an outright failure.

@JerryCoffin There's that one golf language that only uses Chinese characters. Not only is it hard to read, but you generally can't write it either.

書けるよう :)

12:34 AM
Bless you!

@Corbin: There is now a bounty on a PHP question. You in? :-)

I'm going to sleep now.
See you later :)

Later!

12:50 AM
@Morwenn G'night.

@Jamal Oooo, perhaps. Don't have time tonight, but will certainly look into it.

1:13 AM
I just had a door to door salesman talk me up for like 3 minutes and then ask to come inside. That was weird. God I freaking hate door to door salesmen.

My strategy? knock-knock-knock. Open door, "Hi--" "No.", close door.

Yeah... It's always young student types here, and I feel bad. I usually at least let them get to the "I'm selling--" part and then I close the door.
That one was just strange. And very predatory. The whole thing. It was very transparent manipulation. I hate that this is a college town and most students probably fall for that shit.

Yeah. I live in a college town too.

Imagine letting him in. How the hell do you get him out without a very, very confrontation-y moment? "I think you need to leave." "Ok, but first just let me tell you about--" picks up knife "Get the fuck out."

Another strategy is to answer the door completely naked.

1:18 AM
Me three. But hardly anyone comes to our door. :-)

Usually then they don't even say anything.

Hahaha. I should have answered the door with just my dick hanging out. Fully clothed. Just penis out.

Except for AT&T trying to sell U-Verse

Ohhh god. AT&T is fucking pushy with that U-Verse. They used to come by like once a week.

And see how long it takes them to notice...lol
The worst part is, when I moved into this house, the previous residents had AT&T. And I go with Cox. But either way, I'd only be an Internet customer.

1:19 AM
They actually did sell it to my family (we used to have Time Warner). A better deal than before, and we have some movie channels.

I also bet this guy comes around at night just so you can't peek out the window and pretend your not home. Had to turn on a light to see who it was, and bam--looks like I'm home.
THe whole situation just annoys me.

I open the door and immediately say: "Oh, you're here for the experimental drug test. Please come in. It's so nice the publicity has died down, and we're starting to get a few volunteers again. What? Come back here!"

AT&T comes by regularly and sends mail all the time since they know they lost this house. And Cox calls me non-stop trying to upgrade me to cable.

Cox is sooooooo much better than AT&T uverse
"You must be my 8 o'clock. Why are you late? Whatever. Come in and take your pants off."

We don't have Cox here. :-(

1:20 AM
Yeah, Cox pushes cable on me too.
And ATT sends me mail all the time. My favorite is when they disguise it as a hand written letter. Like... wtf.

You can watch anything you want online between Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and probably others.
Literally the only thing missing is a way to watch live sports online, and as soon as someone decides to do that, cable is completely dead.

Yeah. I don't know why anyone has cable anymore. Yeah, I suppose sports, but... meh.

so here (where there is no netflix or hulu or anything) people sign up and use a VPN to get access
and it sounds like the TV/Cable networks are trying to ban that

Wait... I thought netflix was in most countries these days? Am I crazy?
How.... How could you ban a VPN?
I love when people don't understand technology.

1:24 AM
because stupidity

Even my parents want to cancel their cable, but they want sports.

Q: Wolves, Goats and Cabbages in Java

Boris the SpiderI thought I would try and write a solution to the Wolf, Goat and Cabbage problem in Java 8 to try and get to grips with lambdas. I am looking for any feedback you might provide. The feedback I am looking for is mainly on code structure and where I could make more, or more simple, use of new Java...

Yeah, my parents don't use cable either. Netflix + hulu + amazon covers basically everything.
I wonder if studios will ever move away from regional rights. It's strange that netflix is even segmented in different countries now that I think about it.

@rolfl A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go... zombie squash

Your rep is now 4567. :D

not my best answer ever, but one less zombie...

Hmm. I think I've finally come up with at least some sort of an answer to one of the few unanswered ObjC questions.
Don't think I've got the time to type it out right now though, as I'm about to go watch some tv and go to bed... but tomorrow perhaps.

Where is Mugs?
I am thinking about taking back my stance on do while loops
it will get rid of an entire if statement if i use a do while

4577
do-while is sorely underused.

2:21 AM
I don't like do while loops, (it's a learned thing) but I think it is going to be nicely used for my main game loop.

Nice Answer!.

i will post the code when I am finished
and it removes an entire variable as well as an if statement

sounds about typical for the right use-case

time to figure out what I want to do with Gestures and Decide Winner. I think if i create a Gesture Class that I can then let the Gestures tell what can kill it or what it kills. but not sure how I want to do it

@Jamal can you Super Ping @Peter Kiss or get a comment to him on that deleted Answer of his codereview.stackexchange.com/a/36486/18427

What do you need to tell him?

if he would just explain the Gesture Class and IList<Gesture> GetGestures() that would be awesome, and I would vote to undelete and upvote it
that is exactly what I want to use in my Game
I just don't understand all of what is going on, I read through it and understand a bit of it but not to where I could actually use it and make changes if I need/want to

If he already has a chat account, then you can also invite him to a room.

I don't think super-ping is cool for summoning folk just to chat....
Only for moderation problems/concerns

That's correct. Just try to get him into a chat room. If you're unable to send an invite (perhaps if he doesn't already have a chat account), then leave a comment on one of his posts first.

3:24 AM
how do I invite someone to a chat?

It appears that he does have a chat account.

3:46 AM
I am still new to the whole chat part of the Stack
if he happens to come in here while I am not here......

You could always start a new chat room, perhaps when you'll be around.

yeah I could do that too huh
I am going to try to figure out as much as I can. but soon I am going to bed I think

@200 hi!

Hi!!!

4:26 AM
aaannnndd bye.

Bye!
@Jamal I notice that you've been deleting follow-up selfie answers containing revised code.

@200_success I can't remember any specific cases, but I think revised code is supposed to go into the question or as a new question. Or have we established otherwise?

My brain hurts from my Calculus project.
Good night all!

Goodnight!

ah the latex one is so true

4:39 AM
I could see the C++ one being true, too.

@Jamal Selfie answers with revised code aren't such a bad idea, I think.

With just revised code, or the code along with the specific improvements? I'm looking through the deleted answers now, but it may be difficult to find the ones I've deleted.

This example doesn't involve a selfie update, but it illustrates what can happen when posting revised code in the question:

It didn't seem clear that it was meant to be improved code. It seems that he ended up with something else, but also couldn't get it properly indented.
Oh yeah. I also converted that to an edit.

4:50 AM
Ah, that one. He said he was going to stop at one of the earlier edits, but he kept going. He just needed one edit.

Excessive addenda to the question is a minor problem, since it could lead to people writing answers responding to different versions of the code. Selfie answers might be preferable to editing the question. I'm not sure I have the solution, though.

Me, neither. This may be something we need to revisit on Meta. Fortunately, I don't see it happen very often. Usually the OP just collects advice and stops there.

Would that question be suitable for migration to DBA? Or would they consider it not technical enough (i.e., a design opinion question)?

I'm not entirely sure, but I'm still leaning towards DBA.

@PeterKiss Thank you!!!
@BenVlodgi I put a do while into my code

@Malachi I'm so proud. How did it feel?
3

@BenVlodgi I thought it was going to feel dirty, but it fit for what I was doing
@BenVlodgi I removed like 10 lines of code, including that duplicate question at the end.
I removed the newgame variable at the beginning of the loop, and at the end I put my Choice method into the while statement.
Hello @GraceNote

@Malachi I think you have underestimated the power of do-while

@Malachi Yah, they aren't so bad. and nice :)
@Malachi putting choice in the do while is a very good idea

1:14 PM
it's just a backwards while statement....:) jk

@Malachi except that if you are asking them to clear before then... it might be a wasted question.

@BenVlodgi I ask them if they want to reset their score still. maybe I should make that happen after like 10 games or if they have like 20 losses or something

@Malachi haah, that might be too much effort
@Malachi What you should really probably do is.. instead of having a yes no question, have a menu of options... press 1 to play again, 2 to clear your score, 3 to quit
@Malachi then just re-use the GetIntInput method

@BenVlodgi I like that idea. I already have a menu Method that takes in a list of options.
PrintMenu is what it is called
Beautiful piece of code

        public static void PrintMenu (List<string> List)
        {
            for (int i=0; i<List.Count; i++) {
                Console.WriteLine ((i+1) + ": " + List[i]);
            }
        }
I should overload it with a string array too

@Malachi I wouldn't bother, you can always ToList(), or ToArray() if needed

1:19 PM
By The Way, thanks to all the Santas out there that think I code well.
@BenVlodgi right, right. I forgot about those.
BTW until Break time

@Malachi but yes print menu, then get-int input would be good... then no repeated questions
kk

@BenVlodgi agreed. but I call it PromptForNumber

@Malachi gotcha... good name aswell

Depends, does it validate the number or it just prompts for it? I'd call it something like GetValidNumericInput..

Personally I would call it GetIntInput :P

1:27 PM
I might start to code brainfuck... at least then I won't have to think about naming things.

I found the answer to my Gestures in a deleted answer last night
but monodevelop doesn't like HashSet for some reason, so I want to know what I am doing on that so I can either replace it or download the code to create a HashSet, it was @PeterKiss's answer

@Malachi HashSet is the answer?

can you see a deleted answer yet @Ben?

@Malachi Probably not... nope

I am looking at the Gesture Class and protected virtual IList<Gesture> GetGestures()
from his answer. it was totally what I was thinking about, it's super easy to add more Gestures and everything. it is maintainable and everything. if I can just figure out how to use it
brb

@Malachi I still think a Gesture class is too much work
@Malachil a HashSet is just like a Dictionary... which is what I used in my answer
@Malachi you have an enum of Gestures, and a Dictionary of all the interactions

hah, I may add another more OO answer

7.4K! :) (I know, that's not a milestone, ...I just like multiples of 100)

@Mat'sMug it doesn't really validate the answer other than that it makes you pick a number between the bounds. i guess it sort of validates. I guess.....what is your definition of validation?
static int PromptForNumber (string prompt, int lower, int upper)
{
    int? pick = null;
    while (pick == null) {
        Console.WriteLine(prompt);
        pick = Console.ReadLine().BoundedParse (lower, upper);
    }
    return pick.Value;
}
public static int? BoundedParse (this string str, int lower, int upper)
{
    if (str == null) {
        return null;
    }
    int result;
    bool success;
    success = int.TryParse (str, out result);
    if (!success) {
        return null;
    }
    if (result < lower) {
        return null;
    }
    if (result > upper) {
        return null;
    }
    return result;
}
the bounded parse does the Validating work really @Mat's

1:57 PM
@Malachi right, and PromptForNumber doesn't just prompt for a number - I'd name PromptForNumber something that makes it clear that the value returned from that method is a valid, usable number between lower and upper ;)
mind you, perhaps the mere presence of lower and upper in the signature is enough to do that
and you could still have an overload without 'em that just prompts for a number (and simply validates that the result is a number)

I think we are getting into that naming grey zone @Mat'sMug because the parameters give away that it has boundaries.

yeah that's what I was getting to. Basically, looks good ;)

@Mat'sMug just saw that after I posted...lol

Yeah. That was almost the worst thing in his code. The worst thing was that he was using the internet just to generate a simple random number for a dice roll.

@syb0rg I don't think his "real" application simply does that
LOL -- that is just a working example of the real thing. — pmg 2 hours ago
And actually, there's a benefit in using random.org rather than the computer's pseudo-random generator.
random.org has more "random" numbers.

@SimonAndréForsberg But we aren't that worried about random numbers when we are only generating the numbers for a dice rolling game. Security isn't the highest priority.
Plus, I included a few things in there in case he had to use the internet.

Q: Is there a better way to insert an enum into a set without macros?

AaronI created an enum for a class and in the constructor I inserted all the enum values into a set. I am wondering if there is a better way anyone can recommend. Q: Even and odd numbers in linked list

user3402552I have a linked list that stores integers. I must split the linked list into two linked list, one stores the even numbers and the other store the odd numbers. When I compile, it prints just the first list. For example, the linked list is: 12->25->15->18->29->20->NULL List with even numbers: 12->...

lombok....

I feel like adding a challenge suggestion: simulate an ocean with fish and sharks and other critters, where critters move around and eat each other...

@Mat'sMug back in college when that was a project I had to do, we implemented fishermen, whos hooks would spawn randomly in the ocean and travel upwards catching the fish they hit, and break if they hit a shark

3:13 PM
and the sharks eat the fish?

yah
but you know.. sharks starve without fish
I played with that simulator so much, with the right numbers you could get some crazy fluctuations.. sharks nearly eating all the fish, while breading more.. then they mostly die off, then the fish make a comeback only to be eaten by the few remaining sharks

@Mat'sMug that would be a great challenge with some thread fiddle

that's what I was thinking..
