I don't upvote capriciously, nor do I downvote capriciously. I have upvoted answers of yours in the past, but this one just isn't up to standards, as you pointed out yourself. And it's still being edited as we speak.

and it's not a sufficient test: because bytes are being added

Bah, that review has pissed me off enough.

12:24 AM
I was already doing you a favour by divulging my vote; I don't think it's fair for you to badger me into changing my mind. Trust me, if the answer is good, I'll vote accordingly.
Anyway, with 1 upvote and 1 downvote, you're still coming out ahead.
... which is more than I think this answer deserves.

@200_success I'm not trying to badger you, I'm trying to figure out what you think could be improved. I could care less about the rep.

Fair enough. I'll critique your review. =)

@syb0rg Apologies for saying it wasn't me. I was afraid that would out you.

@ChrisW I wasn't mad. I had my suspicions, and I wanted clarification on the downvote.

I like and agree with the "What you did well on" part.

12:27 AM
@syb0rg Two bugs: a) strlen(*in) won't compile b) it's not a sufficient test because extra bytes may be added to the output

@StackExchange Best answer for a poor question that I've seen in a long time:
1
A: Check if js variable exists and checking it's value

jfriend00First off, your code really breaks down to this logic and I find it helpful to write it out the longer version to full understand the logic flow before trying to shorten it: var header_cookie, cookie_check, city_profile, state_profile; if (typeof header_check !== "undefined") { header_cookie...

Add instead of OR isn't an improvement in efficiency or readability or anything. It's saying something just because you could say it. All else being equal, there's no reason to raise that issue with the OP's code.
The original code already copies the terminating \0 correctly.
As for the overall suggestion to write the entire output elsewhere, I think it's a step backwards, for multiple reasons.
It was initially unsafe before you added a limit. Even with the limit, the caller is still left with insufficient guidance: how big does the output buffer need to be?

It's still unsafe because the limit check isn't implemented properly.

Either provide that guidance, or this function should assume the responsibility of allocating the necessary storage itself. In which case, it would either accept a char ** out-parameter or return a char *.

Hello @Grey

o/ Hi there

hey
@Grey you write code?

@Grey No CR account?

Anyway, the only redeeming factor about your suggestion would be simplicity — but at the cost of offloading troubles onto the caller. The original code already solved the problem better, in my opinion.

@lol.upvote Haha yes, I do =)
@syb0rg Nah. The site looks interesting though!

12:39 AM
@200_success Overall, the reason why I am leaving it deleted.

I'd probably get eaten alive :p

@200_success I totally agree with you too. Not my best review. Perhaps I'm just having one of those days...

In the best case, if the input is a low-ASCII string, the original code would just scan it and return without copying anything.

@Grey You're more likely to be infected with the CR obsession

@Grey What language do you use?

@syb0rg I'm fairly competent with C++ but I'm more of a C# guy. (yay managed enviornmentz!1!11!11)

Q: Weekend-Challenge Reboot

lol.upvoteIn December 2013 we held a bunch of weekly weekend-challenge events, which was fun, and generated posts that made it to the site's newsletter, week after week. One may want to tweak this query so as to filter posts created before December 30th, 2013. Some weekend-challenge stats up to that date:...

@Grey Well, I guarantee that if you stick around here, you will gain that "advanced programming knowledge".
One way you can do that is by asking questions on your code, and when you feel confident enough, answering others code.

@Grey have a look at this, and assume this is about as 'deep' as the site gets w/r/t our C++ standards....
http://codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/38402/http-stream-a-stream-that-opens-an-http-get-and-then-acts-like-a-normal-c-istr
THen have a look a thtis, and it's about as shallow as they get:
http://codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/40124/trim-white-space-from-string
If you feel you can improve on either of those, then you are good for this site... and if you feel you can't then you are still good fir this site because you can ask questions!

@rolfl And vote!

12:48 AM
@rolfl Yeah I need some improvement :v
I should make an account now lol, before I put it off

@lol.upvote thanks, aiming for [badge:selfie], I mean [badge:self-learner].

@Grey you're good for this site whether you're a pro or whether you simply care about the quality of your code. Knowing how to properly indent code, name identifiers, and of course knowing your language at least a little, is all it takes to be a reviewer. We need more answers - if you have something to say about anything in anyone's code, say it. This is Code Review.
6
If all you can see is the bad indentation, leave a comment. When more advanced users come and leave their answers, read them - if you learn anything yourself, upvote. If you think the answer is anything useful to the OP, upvote. If there's a picture of a monkey at the bottom of the answer, upvote. And then use what you've learned to answer more questions, and spend some more votes.

@Grey Another great way to earn reputation is to tackle the questions with no upvoted answers. If you answer one of those questions in there, and then post a link to that answer here, you will most likely get recognition for your work.

@lol.upvote Some people are visual learners. I am one of those people.
That is why I made that statement. For those type of people.

That might explain it:
@lol.upvote, fair comment -- today I've been rattling off code on this forum in coffee breaks, which is perhaps against the point! I did have a point to make, though, which is that the usual OO approach (classes, interfaces, design pattern, etc.) can lead you away from the simplest/er solutions. That's what I was trying to demonstrate. Re: A, I chose A to read nicely, albeit tongue in cheek. — Rafe 5 mins ago

I put a bold "Problems:" for it. hopefully that will stop any more votes.

People on SO do not go back and check their votes, so, when the 114K size review queue is processed, hopefully the people checking itout will not close it.

@rolfl famous last words.

thanks, that will likely help.
I also thnk upvoting the question will help ;-)

I hate it when I come across questions that scream out ... "this looks wrong" but I can't work out a better solution.

A: Should you edit the code in a question?

David HarknessI feel editing to fix formatting is a net win for the community. Doing so makes it easier for other reviewers and provides a good example for the asker. While it may benefit the asker to do it themselves, they'll have plenty of opportunities later. Having a good example gives them something to mo...

@Jamal Hmm.
Doesn't feel right.

Q: How to make this lingo game more compact?

AnonmlyI made a lingo game using Python: You guess a word, and if its letter(s) is in the same spot as a hidden word's, you add [] around the letter. If it's in the hidden word, but not in the same spot, you add()). As of now, I have a whole bunch of loops and some code which I find makes the program...

@Jamal, time for bed!

Right...

@Jivings Perhaps it's possible to get a stacktrace, but I don't know how. Therefore, I technically can't :)

Awesome comment on SO:
Okay I'm stupid. The code that adds the ChangeListener is in the same block that adds a Tab so I was adding one listener per tab. — vemv Jul 24 '11 at 11:16

Q: Python keeps on running? does not end programme [please help we are new to this]

guestWell everytime we run this, it does the math but repeats it almost endlessly. We don't know how to fix this, and we've been trying for ages. Please help # dictionary storing the amount of each bill/coin needed m_d = {100: 0, 50: 0, 20: 0, 10: 0, 5: 0, 1: 0} cost = float(input("Cost of item: ")) ...

@kleinfreund Morning!

10:25 AM
Heya @Simon

@kleinfreund Did you see the new HTML structure I made?

Nope. I'm currently in school.
Where is it?^^

I am currently at work btw :) So there's no rush with it, just wanted to know if that is the way you wanted the HTML.

I have stuff to do myself (ugh). We'll talk about it this evening. We find a nice solution and make a beautiful game, alright?

And my bountry did indeed attract a few votes. :)
And a very good answer as well.

Time for lunch, and probably time for @lol.upvote and @rolfl to wake up soon :)

Already there @SimonAndréForsberg

@rolfl I know, it's designed differently now, that's way. Will be working on the CSS to fix that this evening. Currently, one row = one 3x3 area :)

Q: Increasing the speed of the code

yaneni need the code runs fine. It takes 100s to complete it for 5 iteration. i need to reduce it to take lesser times with the same number of iteration. h = 324 by 648 matrix tic [a2,b2] = size(h); z = 3; mat = repmat(z,1,b2); sym = mat2cell(rn,1,[mat]); %%Generating the truth table 0 - 2...

Wow, I just found nine methods here that could be replaced by one method, if things were just structured correctly... Can you beat that, @lol.upvote?
Actually, make that about... 25 or so methods... that can be replaced by... about 4.
It's kinda hard to keep track of the code duplication here...

Q: Speed up CSV reading code (vector of doubles)

user2763361I am trying to read a single-columned CSV of doubles into Java with a string header. It is 11 megabytes and takes over 15 minutes to read, which is clearly unacceptable. In R this CSV would take about 3 seconds to load. This CSV file may contain strings so I am parsing it with this in mind. The...

@SimonAndréForsberg Ah, of course! That's why I'm waiting a little as well ;)

Q: Matching script tags with regexes

Tim SeguineLike anything that shouldn't be done, I decided to see if it is possible to match <script> tags robustly using regexes in PHP. Since there is no arbitrary nesting, I figured it should at least be possible. This is what I came up with. It is designed to handle every edge case I could think of, in...

Q: Compact python code

user3058865My question concerns the following python code which is already working. As far as I have seen, there are very elegant solutions of compacting code. Do we review regex abuse?

@lol.upvote I'm certainly not going to, it's nasty.
Nice edit.
