@ChrisW C++ is entirely different from Java, given the huge differences in C++ standards and compilers.
The problem is the many different versions of Java.
The C++11 tag might be used inconsistently (e.g. not included in some C++ questions).
When someone nonchalantly tags a question , then we will have to go through and tag it with one of the many version tags available. Why not just have one big blanket tag?
Also, it's not like our Java gurus are not going to say to use something besides Java 6-8 anyways.
Just like I wouldn't recommend someone use an older C standard.
Heck, that Java 8 question made me want to write my Sudoku Solver for Java 8...

if they aren't going to support it anymore that means that they aren't going use anything it uses on new OS's or Phones or Tablets
it's just a framework. you can find the libraries to do what you need and probably keep your program from bloating up since you will only be using the libraries that you need and not the entire framework.
One factor to consider when deciding whether to make a new tag for Java 8 is whether it introduces any incompatible changes. If there is the possibility of Java 8 code behaving differently when running under Java ≤ 7, then it needs a tag. If it just won't compile at all under Java 7, then it might be obvious enough from context.
I think that Java tends to be conservative enough not to introduce significant incompatibilities.

@200_success Yeah, I'm not aware of any upcoming incompatibilities in Java 8 vs. the previous versions at least.
There are backward-compatibility things (you will not be able to compile Java8 code with Java7), but no forward-compatible issues (Java7 compiles fine on Java8)
most languages (except maybe Ruby) are really good with backwards compatibility (or forward compatibility, if you want to phrase it that way)
