No idea what Prism is for :s

well that's a good sign anyways.
I looked into Prism 5.0 and how it works while ago but never used it. and always felt left out. though everybody uses it to the max and I am the one who doesn't :)

JuicyI want to solve the following in Python: x^101 = 8765 (mod 9691573) I coded this: n = 8765 power = 101 mod = 9691573 x = 0 while x < mod: if (x ** power) % mod == n: break x += 1 print x How can this code be improved for efficiency?

Nah, I only ever used plain vanilla WPF
I've many things to learn about it still. Things like behaviors, and storyboards/animations, for instance.

But I have one question up one CR already :D
Seemingly the google hit counts hard on the course code, so I'm first removing that one and hoping it's okay

10:13 AM
Haha, the designer of C++ felt that it was time to improve the language again and came back with three papers: allow to overload operator., let x.f(y) call f(x, y) and let the compiler auto-generate operator== and operator!= for user-defined types.
One big change is fine, but three big changes are better, right?

@Morwenn Or just create C+++!

You're looking at C#!

hmm ok I see the issue now, if students googled for "<course code> <subject name>" then my Github repo would get higher ranked hits as the actual assignment

@JeroenVannevel Nope, still no properties.

At least you're getting extension methods

10:16 AM
Those are not really extension methods since methods declared outside of the class do not have access to the private parts of the class.

@Morwenn Well, you wouldn't want others to access your privates.

It's more like a unified way to call the functions declared in or outside of the class.
@skiwi We all agree with that.

@Morwenn In C#, extension methods can't access private members of the actual class either

@JeroenVannevel It is in Ruby then?

@Morwenn yo no soy Ruby
It's just syntactic sugar that changes f(x, y) to x.f(y), as you say
main benefit: intellisense
and less ugly helper classes

10:20 AM
The C++ ones wuld be understood as "search for a member function that fits, then if not found, search for a free function that fits."
And by "free function that fits", I assue that it ill use the ADL rules.
It seems that C++17 will bring major changes into the language.

@Morwenn Again?

@skiwi hat do you mean? :p

Yay, all Android exercises work. Easy shizzle, time to eat fries and go home

I thought C++ was quite established, but it seems like a real evolving langauge

@skiwi It seemed "established" because there has been nothing new between 1998 and 2011.
But, like any other programming language, C++ has holes and has to adapt to new hardware and new paradigms.
And the designers of the language somehow try to make it simpler t use too, while still being retrocompatible and no less powerful. That's a big challenge.

10:27 AM
That sounds rather interesting

That said, the big hole between 1998 and 2011 allowed to learn from other language's mistakes :p

Does C++ have any kind of security mechanism? To run foreign code in a sandbox

No. You create programs with C++. Sanboxes and stuff are let to the environment you use the programs in.

ok
I know that in Java it's a huge pain

Generally, my antivirus software want to sandbox my C++ programs anyway.

@SimonAndréForsberg It's sooooooo easy for shows to jump the shark as they evolve.

jump the shark?

1:48 PM
Jumping the shark is an idiom created by Jon Hein that was used to describe the moment in the evolution of a television show when it begins a decline in quality, signaled by a particular scene, episode, or aspect of a show in which the writers use some type of "gimmick" in an attempt to keep viewers' interest. The phrase is based on a scene from a fifth-season episode of the sitcom Happy Days when the character Fonzie jumps over a shark while on water-skis. The usage of "jump the shark" has subsequently broadened beyond television, indicating the moment when a brand, design, franchise or creative...

and it got decently well received too

3:13 PM
@Pimgd your concept of interference seems to be flawed..

@Vogel612 I don't know how it works in detail, I'll give you that. I assume it's something like talking to people in a busy restaurant... it works, but if people at the same table start having a conversation that crosses the table and you try to cross that conversation on your own it just won't work

@Pimgd yes it's something along these lines. The fun thing begins when the people can cross-talk by changing their voice...

Except Wi-Fi is not a directed stream and more a ... shockwave of sorts?

exactly.
the wifi standard allows 3 completely separate conversations at once on the table.

sure, but you can fit 4 in
and 5 too...

3:16 PM
sure, but then you begin to hear the others...

yeah.

but it gets worse.

Except speeds these days are damn high.
so even if your speed is impacted by 75%

as there's more conversations, the words begin to kill each other out

you could probably still function.

3:17 PM
and you have to resend whole sentences...

Especially if you're a thermometer that needs to send 4kb every hour.

and the more conversations you try to fit into the same area of wavelength, the worse it gets...

the scales are different... The inherent problem remains, no one reasonably educated will want to put more than 6 networks in the same perimeter, because at latest then the bandwith benefit doesn't reach the user anymore, because you lose too much to interference.
if anything even in a cramped apartment complex I'd not expect more than 10 networks at once...
especially since most apartment-complexes are build with a steel-grid inside the walls for stability, which can heavily cut down the wifi signal

But I detect 16 wifi networks at work

then, depending on the company you work at, I'd go and slap whoever's responsible for such madness.

I'd blame us for sitting between all the other shops
Post office next door has wifi I'm picking up, the DIY market's wifi I'm picking up... etc

okay nevermind.. I'd give him a pat on the back and invite him to a drink...

Imma go home now

Q: Why was my conclusion edited out?

Mark RansomThis question Fastest way to clamp an integer to the range 0-255 had a conclusion that I added after testing all of the submitted answers and updating to a newer compiler. This conclusion had information that can't be found in the actual answers. The edit was done by Jamal, who judging by the dia...

Q: Is there a beter way to check input besides a switch case?

MX DSo I am running a Switch case to check if a user has filled in all the necessary fields within a form, and if not I prompt them to do so. I was wondering if there was a better way to do this, or if a switch case like this would suffice. General suggestions/naming improvements would also be apprec...

Q: Efficient Prime Factorization for large numbers

booky99I've been working on a little problem where I need to compute 18-digit numbers into their respective prime factorization. Q: Finding 10-unique-digit number with i-first-digits divisible by i

Luke ShillabeerI was posed this question by a friend; I am a natural number written with 10 different digits such that for all i ∈ {1, . . ., 10} the number formed by my i first digits (from left to right) is divisible by i. Who am I? I came up with a brute-force solution over the next hou...

Q: Cache resources using ngResource

Remco HaszingI have written an AngularJS factory for caching resources fetched using ngResource. It works, but I'm thinking it can be improved. My main question is: Would it be better to use prototype inheritance instead? A side question is: Did I do the ngdoc right? The specifications for this haven't been ...

Welcome to the 1K club @MartinR!

Thanks! (So I can edit all questions and answers now :)

@MartinR Until we graduate at least haha

@syb0rg well that's 6-8 months...

4:28 PM
True, true

@syb0rg Sorry, I didn't get that. How is the Edit Questions and Answers privilege related to the graduation of this site?

@MartinR During the beta period, the reputation required for each privilege tier is lower than what it would be for a graduated site

in fact the limit rep doubles upon graduation

OK, thanks.

@MartinR That's why 2,000 and 3,000 rep users are an important stat for beta sites, since those are the users who will be able to edit and close/open after the site graduates.

What do I do when there is 2 good answers that cover different elements in the code? Can't accept both....

Accept the one that you feel helped you the most, or gave you more of a 'eureka' moment.
About that suggested edit, that was approved.... hmmm I'm surprised.
That toString() was Spot.toString(), and the point 4 was perfectly valid....

Q: Which answer to accept?

Accept the one that was posted first? Accept neither? Accept the one with the most upvotes? I think we should have a docum...

10:50 PM
:( I went onto the homework and it stated that you must override the toString method in your answer but 4 was saying to use valueOf instead.... Sorry

@TheFailure The owner of the answer accepted your edit, so I can't really complain, but it is important for you to understand that he's right....
The code he referenced was this code:

:( god

    @Override
    public String toString() {
        return value + "";
    }
Which comes from the Spot class, not the Sudoku class.

Yeah, I see that now.....

I'm going to reverse that edit ;-)
