Yes, it may still use it since it's being updated over some set period of time.

FYI I've flagged the meta-Q for #6 to be locked like the others
yay new villains! was about time for a change!

I Saw what you did there..... ;-)

You think @StackExchange Saw that?

I'll go to bed, @lol.upvote you'll get the honor of creating the meta post.
Night folks

Q: Calculate the number of moves requires for a knight chess piece

AlecIt's possible to work out the number of moves required to move from (0, 0) to (A, B) for a knight on an infinite chess board in O(1) time. This is a solution to do it in O(n) time, where n is the number of moves required. Disregarding inefficiency, are there any mistakes? #define ABS(a) ({ type...

A lot of C questions recently, time to do work!

Oh! This looks off-topic:

Q: Implement AES on CTR mode using pycrypto

dashoI'm trying to implement CTR mode by myself (only decryption for now), using only AES built-in functions from pycrypto. It means that I'm not supposed to use mode=AES.MODE_CTR. However, I know that using AES.MODE_CTR would be more simple, but I'm doing this as a learning experience. What am I doi...

Agreed. Voted to close.

Took me a while to paste that. I haven't used a Mac in quite a while...

You get used to it after continued usage.
But then you go back to a PC and you wonder where the command key is.

You get used to it corrupted after continued usage.

You know you are getting old, like me, when you embargo and blacklist technology

Q: Testing mapping code

vorouObviously, you have to test mapping code somehow, even (or especially) if you use AutoMapper. Is there any way to make it less verbose? [Test] public void Map_Always_SetsSimpleProperties() { var auctionPlace = fixture.Create<string>(); var submissionCloseDateTime = fixture.Create<DateTime>()...

I have blacklisted apple.... for two reasons.... they design goods for the average user... and I am not average.....

and they are expensive.
Those are two things I don't need.... so I avoid.
as a result, I have never had to worry about those issues where there's no meta key.

I'm not using Mac because 1.) I still like Windows and would just put that on a Mac, 2.) they're expensive.
I should clarify: I'm currently using one in the school computer lab.

That's where your taxes go? To Apple?

A: Calculate the number of moves requires for a knight chess piece

syb0rgA few notes: Your defined ABS surrounded by parenthesis is not the usual way that C programmers declare macros so that they aren't problematic. #define ABS(x) do { typeof (a) _a = (a); _a > 0 ? _a : -_a; } while(0) Why are all of your single letter variable names capitalized? You need to let ...

@Jamal - now you are edrepping on Ac ? academia.stackexchange.com/posts/16281/revisions
Is CR not enough for you?

10:12 PM
Anyone in here have Windows 8? I'm curious for how it compares to 7 for programmer-style use? I want to like Windows 8, I really do... but... it just seems like the metro stuff would be really hard to very rapidly switch between screens?

@rolfl: Thanks for spilling my secret reconnaissance mission...

There's too much Jamal for just CR o.O. He can't contain his edit addiction :D

@Corbin: It was a hot question, yet no one spotted that bad formatting. You all can thank me later. ;-)

@Jamal On that comment you just made, do you mean by adding a space between the question mark and the 0?

Yes, and the OP should do the same for all the ternary statements.

10:18 PM
@Jamal I've seen people do ternary statements like the way I had it, and they also do it the way you had it.
Edit made nonetheless.

Perhaps it's a matter of style, but it doesn't seem too readable in my opinion.
And I'll upvote as soon as I can.

@Jamal That is the way it is used in Wikipedia.
In computer programming, ?: is a ternary operator that is part of the syntax for a basic conditional expression in several programming languages. It is commonly referred to as the conditional operator, inline if (iif), or ternary if. It originally comes from CPL, in which equivalent syntax for e1 ? e2 : e3 was e1 → e2, e3. Although many ternary operators are possible, the conditional operator is so common, and other ternary operators so rare, that the conditional operator is commonly (albeit incorrectly) referred to as the ternary operator. Conditional assignment ?: is used as foll...

Q: Optimizing Python code for Project Euler #5

VeritasThis is my solution for the 5th problem of Project Euler. Is there any way to improve the while loop conditional instead of using the sum? table = range(1,21) result = 1 pf = 2 while sum(table) > len(table): flag = False for x,y in enumerate(table): if y % pf == 0: table[x] ...

Random tidbit: today is National Corn Chip day.

@Corbin I like it actually. Takes a bit of getting used to, but feels like when they introduced the Ribbon in Office - a PITA until you realize you really like it after all!

Q: How would you organize/code this better? (Basic HTML&CSS)

SocchamI'm curious to see what any of the more experienced programmers would do instead of methods I took as a learning tool. Any tips/tricks/fixes and reasoning is appreciated!! http://www.jacobweyer.com -this is the result of the code so far <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>Alpha Tau Omega | ...

Ah... Interesting. You're the first person I've heard not completely hating it. Other than the lack of start menu, it's the same as 7 with regards to like snapping windows to half of the screen, and stuff, right? I'm so torn between 8 or 7 :( lol

@Corbin I would go with 7. Cheaper, all software has legacy support for it still, and (in my opinion) is better for programming.
Reload in 15 minutes.

Well, I can get either for free from my university, so it's more of a "which would i like better"
but meh... it does seem like 7 might be better
considering i main game/program. doesn't seem to fit the 8 workflow

10:48 PM
Oh yeah! I can still get Windows 8 through school, but I won't be putting it on my laptop. I'll just wait to have it on my next computer.

i wish i could just get 8 with a damn start menu. i like the new dialogs and the boot time and so on. just metro feels clunky and awkward as hell with a mouse.

I think 8.1 has a start menu?

maybe 8.2 will give us a proper start menu lol
Nope. It has a start button, but all it does is open the metro menu.

oh
I've pretty much avoided 8 as much as possible

Maybe I'll make myself try it for a few days... Could always just keep in mind that I might reformat.
I also plan to dual boot linux, so might just end up using ubuntu or mint 99% of the time lol

10:51 PM
I really wish they'd just left in the kernel enhancements, and added virtual desktops to windows 7

Yeah. I don't know why MS was determined to shove a tablet OS down our throats. Just leave the desktop paradigm alone, and have a separate version for tablets that use the same kernel with a different UI. Even Apple didn't try to cram the same OS down people's throats.
It's just infuriating. I'm starting to think it was on purpose, so when Windows 9 brings back the start menu "because we listened to you! and you're feedback matters!" (see XBox One....), everyone jumps all over it.

it certainly follows the pattern of one crap Windows, one decent Windows

Speaking of Xbox One... is it any good? I haven't been following the news for a while.

I'll just stay happy on Mac and Linux :)

Yeah. There is a distinct pattern lol.
I haven't even see a XBO in person yet. Just there was a 6 month period when the internet wouldn't shut the hell up about it...
@syb0rg That's probably the way to go, really. Just need more games to go to mac :(
(Or preferably linux! Come on, Steam OS :p)

10:56 PM
@Corbin The only terrible pitfalls of Mac really.
Like I can't play Skyrim on my Mac :(

Eh, and the closed hardware is a kind of meh factor
well, not closed hardware, but limited choices
It was nice being able to throw together my new computer from whatever the hell i wanted
Can't do that so much with mac

not so bad for laptops, really annoying for desktops

Yeah, next laptop i get, I'm getting a MBP
But desktops.... Meh

Laptops are very nice from Apple, which is what I have.
I'm not too sure about the Mac Pro, it kinda looks cool.

I was holding out for a MBP, but I ended up getting an Air, which I've actually been really happy with

10:57 PM
But one doesn't buy things for looking cool.

Yeah, I'm torn between a MBP or air. I think I'd like the extra power of a MBP. The weight and battery of an Air are very attractive though.

The new MBP is very similar to an older MBA in terms of size. And battery isn't too bad on it (I think).

9 hours vs 12 hours for MBP/Air

I actually haven't missed the extra power one bit, but that being said, I don't really game on the laptop

Good point on the size though. Really unless a pound and half an inch matters, the size doesn't matter.
Well, even for not gaming... Netflix + compiling + a half dozen daemons + random stuff can be pretty demanding
the idea of going from 8 cores now to 2 makes me a little sad.
(I think the 15" might have 4 core i5 and i7, but i think the 13" only has 2 core i5's :()
Or wait... Are there even 15" airs? It's been ages since I shopped around on Airs. I might be thinking of MBPs :/

11:02 PM
Nope, only 11" and 13"

Maybe the strangest edit I've ever seen: codereview.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/16582

And yeah, it's either dual core i5 or i7

Ah
I guess dual core i7 is still 4 cores though
Well, 4 logical cores

yep

@syb0rg What in the world.... Maybe they edited the wrong thing?

11:04 PM
@syb0rg What the...
@Corbin Those parts look pretty similar to a computer I built recently, except for the video card

@Corbin They meant to edit their question, edited an answer to it instead.

@syb0rg: How does someone end up editing an answer, and not stop and think when told that the edit will be peer-reviewed?

Glad to hear that. First computer I've built, so glad the parts aren't completely crazy haha
@ChrisW ahhhh.... That's pretty weird.

Just the videocard seems overkill for a 23" monitor :)

@Corbin No Blu Ray player? Same old DVD?

11:09 PM
@ChrisW: I'd either roll back that edit, or edit out the part asking for further review. It should be a new question if more review is needed.

@Jamal Ignorance.

@Corbin New user (new to StackExchange)

@syb0rg Meh, not worth $80 considering I don't evne own any blurays

@Corbin Ahh, well then that makes sense.

@Yuushi Hahaha, yeah completely. 780 Ti for 1080p is rather ridiculous, but meh... I plan on getting one or two big ass 27" 4k displays once they're not a trillion dollars.

11:11 PM
yeah, fair enough, figured as much

@Jamal At the time, @amon had already said that his answer was incomplete and that there was more to review; so I left that "more" within the same question.

45 minutes to reload

It looks like h.j.k. finished it off (answering the new part) and has his answer accepted.

Rocking 2 23" 1080p monitors at the moment (well, including the one in shipping). Pretty depressing, but I can't justify spending $500+ on 1440p or 4k monitors at the moment :(

I finally replaced my 22" monitor circa 2002
dell had a special on the 30", so I forked out for one

11:20 PM
I've never been able to decide how I feel about huge monitors. The labs at uni have a lot of 27" screens, and half the time they hurt my neck. Apparently my range of sight is terrible lol. Or maybe they're just too close.

possibly too close

I mostly just stuck with 23" for the time being for symmetry's sake. I reaaaally want a 4k screen at some point :(. Maybe like 2 years from now they won't be 1k for a 30Hz one lol

I'd like a landscape portrait-mode monitor.

They're on reasonably sized desks, but maybe I lean in or something.
Yeah, that would be nice

Q: RebolBot - a chat bot for the chat rooms

Graham Chiu RebolBot is a chat bot with a natural English dialect interface, specifically targeting the StackOverflow chat rooms. Yet it has a modular design, can post tweets to Twitter, and could be modified with only a little effort to work with other chat systems. An instance of the bot hangs out...

Indentation is a bit messed up, but only in the question, not in HTML page which the question links to (so maybe slightly messed-up indentation was the copy-and-paste into the question).

@syb0rg you think it could have something to do with the nazi invasion?

@lol.upvote No, I was thinking it could be modified to post new answers here.

and questions, too!

11:49 PM
Yep.
