A: CR Community Goes to GitHub!

syb0rgPlease visit the Github Code Review Community page for more information and joining the group. I have some points to make on this subject: How the Code Review Community is going to use GitHub is still being debated and decided. If you want to be part of that process, I recommend you join th...

I added a link to the CRC group page so people can now join.

First!

Done

@tomdemuyt I am going to remove you from the owners group and add you to the admins group. There are subtle differences, but most of your abilities will remain the same.
What language team would you like to be added to?

Bwahaha .... first task, first mistake ;-)
What did I miss?

@rolfl Not much.
Is your email getting spammed by me committing to the CRC page?
If so, sorry. I'm still trying to learn the ropes of Git and Github communicating with each other.
If not... awesome.

1:00 AM
I am only getting github.io notificaions.
(and issues, etc.
o, I guess, actually, yes I am getting notifucations of changes to the main page.
But, that is as it should be, right?

@rolfl Yes.
But the reason you have so many is because I haven't fully learned how to push and merge yet.

@Malachi, I can only guess what he means, but I see the same problem (I think). Your loop is n^2. Permutations are n!. n^2 < n!, so there's obviously a problem there.
ah yeah, seems to be what he's saying. seems the original code is bugged too: codereview.stackexchange.com/a/37889/7308

4:30 AM
@Malachi @Corbin's clarification is right.
@Jamal What's up, @Jamal?

Q: Should we care about "stepping on toes"?

Stephen CSomeone responded to an off-topic question like this: "Welcome to CR! Unfortunately resolving issues isn't CR's mandate, we'd be stepping on StackOverflow's toes if this question was on-topic here. Please see our Help Center." Should we care about "stepping on toes"? Or to be a bit more sp...

6:21 AM
@200_success but having that outside loop isn't going to give more permutations. the reason that I said you are missing something very big am I not thinking about this the right way?
@Corbin the original loop was giving the same thing, but it was giving the same thing "factorial" times. and that is what I was saying, I just didn't know how to fix it.

7:19 AM
In the original code, `counter` counts the number of times `set.add()` is called. It keeps repeating until `counter`reaches at least `factorial`, so at least it calls `set.add()` the right number of times. Your proposal calls `set.add()` only `subStrings.size()` times, which is clearly not enough.

As it turns out, the original code was buggy, and tried to add some of the same permutations twice, resulting in an incomplete set. But at least it tried to call `set.add()` the right number of times.

@200_success I see what you are saying now @200_success, it wasn't correct, but it would have had the right amount of entries even though they would have been duplicates.
I am going to bed now I will look at it again tomorrow

@rolfl Thanks. And thank you for voting on one or more of the answers related to this badge.

You're welcome .... now, to whore-up my answer to that question .... ;-)

Haha, indeed.
I don't think you'll be able to get the Populist badge though, but it'd still be fun :)

Q: Are IDE tags even necessary for this site?

JamalI am aware of two current IDE tags: visual-studio (3 questions) eclipse (1 question) I'm not an expert on IDEs in general, but I think most code is written in some kind of IDE. @tomdemuyt Congrats. Welcome to the club
@Malachi Personally I haven't read many programmings books. I find it more educating to write code. But of course, we all have our own way of learning

5:21 PM
@tomdemuyt Yeah, I had to get you to 2000 rep so I could add you to the "Admin" team. It would be a shame that you were 20 rep short of joining.

@SimonAndréForsberg I am going to try and go through it in python when I finish learning the syntax

5:45 PM
ok maybe I will work in C# for now

@Malachi ooh, Python sounds interesting.

@SimonAndréForsberg I would like python better if it had semi-colons
and brackets
or braces

As a C++ programmer, I agree.

Q: Functional composition of member function predicates

Kerrek SBIn C++11, it is en vogue to use small lambda expressions to produce ad-hoc predicates. However, sometimes it's fun to create predicates in a functional, "point-free" way. That way, no function bodies need to be inspected, the code is mildly self-documenting, and it's a great icebreaker at parties...

I am going to code the examples in this book and then expand them and post them here so that I can get some feedback on how good of a programmer I am

@Malachi: I should do that sometime as well. But I'll first finish some of the programs that I've already started.

I want to be able to start and finish programs easier, that is why I am starting with the basics again.

I've been doing nothing but basics, but I've also looked for programs that interest me. I mostly like to code little games while expanding on them as I get better.

8:17 PM
@Jamal I want to move my game from XNA to MonoGame but I want to get a good handle on actual programming before I try such a feat. once I can move it to MonoGame I can port it to android, ouya, linux, and windows or Mac so that is where I am going with it evventually, it's a pretty good game right now and I have a good plan for the escalation of the game.

8:41 PM
@Jamal @Malachi Making games? That's my kind of language :)

@SimonAndréForsberg the game that I am working on will be arcade style but I want to expand it step by step until it becomes a 3-Dimensional online multiplayer battle game with a huge(I mean undescribable) amount of playable area.

8:57 PM
@Malachi Sounds interesting. Would love to try it if/when that's possible

9:15 PM
maybe I will share the pre-beta version that I have right now. you have to have .net 3.5 I think

@Jamal Feel free to convert this answer into a comment.

A: Stable radix sort in-place using O(1) space

200_successYour radix_sort() does not work. Sorting { 10, 20, 30 } produces nonsense (e.g. {1, 20, 14688 }).

I think that bug discovery could constitute a review, as in

A: Determine if a word can be constructed from list of subsets

200_successYour getPermutations() fails to generate all permutations. Consider… public static void main(String[] args) { List<String> list = Arrays.asList(args); for (String s : getPermutations(list)) { System.out.println(s); } } If you run java StringFromSubSets 0 1 2 3 | sort, the ...

though I understand that the radix sort bug report lacks detail.

@200_success: Right. Unless it follows an explanation, it seems better as a comment. I'll convert it now.

I didn't feel like writing an explanation, since it just isn't textbook radix sort.

That's fine. It appears to be collecting close votes anyway.

@Malachi I do have .net 3.5

Q: Optimize RecursionArray interface

tagged with ?

Because I thought Fibonacci related to combinatorics.

Perhaps it's time for a fibonacci-sequence tag. codereview.stackexchange.com/search?q=fibonacci+is%3Aquestion
One of those questions deals with Fibonacci heaps, though.

10:15 PM
Fine with me. I'm also thinking about , but there have also not been any related questions recently.

Agree with . All those poker hand questions!

Many are from me. ;-) I may also use the opportunity to fix some of my titles. My "final review of this class" really wasn't the final one, needless to say. :-P

While we're at it, do you think there should be a , distinct from ?

I'm not experienced with that, so it's your call.
You may finish with the Fibonacci tag so that we don't have to flood the front page too heavily.

@Jamal I wouldn't say that Fibonacci is related to combinatorics...

10:21 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg: It was my misunderstanding. 200_success is doing the retagging now.

Done with . That's probably enough front-page churn for the day.

There are hardly any new questions today, but there are some. I'll take a look at playing cards and see if that should wait or not.

@Jamal It feels like it's always more quiet in the weekends around here, and then there's also Christmas upcoming so I expect that it will stay quiet a while

I always feel that way, too. I'm usually still around, so I do my closing so that new askers don't have to wait as long.

Thunderstorm, two days before Christmas Eve... this is some very strange weather...

10:35 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg you might have to download XNA too, I don't remember. my windows machine with the game is down right now and I don't have any way of actually working on the code in VS at the moment. I need to get a new keyboard and stuff.

@Malachi I might already have XNA, and if I don't it doesn't sound so hard to get.
It's no hurry, I just want you to know that if you want someone to test the game, I'd be happy to

@SimonAndréForsberg I hear that, I will have to see if I have a copy of the game somewhere other than that hard drive, I can get it off there but I have to take the computer apart to get it out. I might have a copy on my portable though. there are a few bugs but I will see if I can't zip it or something
don't expect it to be pretty it is something that I wrote while I was in school...

@Malachi It's OK. I'm quite used to non-pretty games (I tend to make it like that myself)

and if you hold down the fire key it will run out of memory, I haven't worked on it in a while.

10:57 PM
yeah I have learned quite a bit since I last worked on it.
it doesn't run out of memory right away, but if you hold it down when you have a certain power-up it creates a lot of shot objects.
