@PaulWhite - is there any way to have questions that are deleted from main automatically show up in the Dropped Question Archive?
Would we even want that?
I know I would like a place to see deleted questions easily... the Trusted User tools is, shall we say, painful.

1:53 PM
@MaxVernon I don't think so. Deletions don't show up for non-mods in any of the tools/APIs I can think of. Even very privileged users can only search for their own deleted posts. They're not in the SEDE dump either.
Probably not what you want anyway, no.
Questions get deleted all the time for all sorts of reasons not associated with the work of this room.
And if a candidate question expires in here through lack of agreement or interest, well not much has been lost has it?

@PaulWhite good point.
@PaulWhite agreed

@MaxVernon Thanks for the feedback.

my pleasure

In that case I'll remove myself from the delete process for the time-being and earn my 10k rep and come back later.
Good Hunting! :-)

you don't need to do that... you can assist simply by pasting questions in here that are no good

1:58 PM
If I come across any, then I certainly will.
Thanks.

Yes, Read it and voted it up and your meta post too (both: read & upvote).

cool

I rate myself as being a DBA.SE regular which means I track both META and DBA.SE.
Q: 0 / A: 0 / Value: None. Answer only slightly touches on original question and OP is probably up-to-date on SQL Server.

@hot2use for me, I think that question could be edited to improve grammar, and the answer could fairly easily be provided that shows how to delete orphaned users along with their schemas. Think of poor quality questions as a target for improvement first, then if there is no room for improvement, consider delete.

2:23 PM
You'd think that would be a duplicate

@hot2use - I don't mean to be pesky, but have you seen this meta post on titles? Myself, I regularly forget to edit titles.
@PaulWhite it is quite surprising that there doesn't seem to be a good candidate (admittedly, it was a slight cursory search) - probably the requirement to remove schemas based on orphans makes it somewhat more unique.

yeah I came to the same conclusion
perhaps someone needs to write a good, modern answer

agreed

2:44 PM
@MaxVernon I edited the title, but didn't remove "How to..."
mea culpa

@PaulWhite yah, that's a good target
@hot2use are you working an answer to that question -> I'm about to hammer it closed as a dupe and don't want to interrupt you.

already done based on you saying "that's a good target"

sweet

I was going to, but hang on a sec.

that raises the question of what to do with this entire conversation ;-)

2:53 PM
do we need to do anything with the convo?

OP seems to have some (oracle) notion of schemas and users and there is a slight difference in SQL Server 2008 R2 in the handling of schemas, which was later removed in newer versions. Just removing the orphaned user, might not remove the schema if I recall correctly. In Oracle that automatically happens. If you issue a DROP USER xyz CASCADE; then user and all related objects (SCHEMA) get deleted.
Anyhow if the question is gone, then so be it.

it's not gone, just marked as a dupe

@hot2use that might make a worthy addition to the target question if you can flush it out a bit with an example. I know schemas are a real source of confusion for a lot of people, especially those coming from Oracle.

there is an answer on the dupe target that addresses the schema issue to some extent

yah, I saw that. I was considering adding a column to the output for DROP SCHEMA, but it looks like @hot2use is "on it".
I'm also considering updating Mark's answer to get away from syslogins and sysusers but I'm guessing there are a lot of answers with deprecated stuff.

3:03 PM
@MaxVernon you'd have to be careful to do that without breaking the attribution

@PaulWhite true. I wonder if Brent wants to update his site ;-)

@MaxVernon the post is no longer there, the link is to the wayback machine

see the revision history

geez how did you figure out it was from Brent?
you're a never-ending source of wonder, Paul

3:09 PM
there was an old comment pointing to Brent's site

oh :-)
damn ephemeral comments

I referenced the comment in my revision note

d'oh. I'm just dumb.

it's easy to miss

After reading the DROP SCHEMA... code I agree that it could be closed as dupe. If OP of "closed as dupe" question would like to add more details and/or reopen his question, then I'm ok with the current state.

3:13 PM
yep seems like a satisfactory ending

if no one has any objections, perhaps it would be useful to clean up this conversation thread (move the trash)?
we should try to keep this room fairly clean, so we can see questions that need to be deleted more easily.
chatting in The Heapâ„¢ would be great
thoughts?

I don't know. Seems useful to keep the discussion in context. The delete candidates are fairly obvious by being one-boxed.

yah, I was of two minds about it myself. Of course, the one-boxed question itself no longer belongs here because it's been taken care of.
one-boxed questions, in my mind, should only exist here if they are still targets for possible deletion.

I can fix that for you if you like

sure.
(waits with bated breath to see what will happen)

3:17 PM
just removed the one-boxing by editing the message

not a perfect solution but it will do I think

works for me!

you could argue the whole discussion belongs in the archive room (even though it was not actually deleted)
I'm fine with that, if you want to handle it that way

sure. I thought you wanted to keep the archive room free of "chattiness"
but if that works for you, I'm behind it!

3:20 PM
I don't have a strong view either way. A lot of this is trial-and-error to see what works best in practice.

great point
with the archive being a gallery, can any room owner here move messages into the archive?

try it and see

I knew you were going to say that!

No objections to cleaning up chat

@PaulWhite - I don't even see the archive room on the list of target rooms that I can relocate messages to. I suppose I need to request access?

3:27 PM
well that's a pain

yah

try it now

I still vote for ghost records

@TomV that's now in use in the archive room.

Ha lol I missed that
I blame mobile

yah, I love the emojis

Any reason the 2 questions I posted in here are still live?
If you guys disagree on them I'd love to know why I was wrong

my votes are in place, just needs one more vote for each question before they "join the choir invisible."

6:49 PM

@TomV do it!
I mean, if you want to. I have.

I'm not sure why I can't since it has 3 down votes and is closed

@TomV curious. There is no "delete" link?

No

@TomV and that's gone

6:51 PM
Maybe it hasn't been closed for long enough

s'weird - I see a delete link.

You are 20+

@PaulWhite when most of the crap is dealt with 8 votes per day should be more than sufficient

@TomV and as you get more rep, that number goes up, which is nice.
I can cast 30 delete votes per day which seems like a lot to me. :-)

Yes I was thinking the same
Maybe we should move the chatty messages to regular trash instead of the audit trail room though
Just a thought
As to not clutter the trace with (for lack of a better word) irrelevant things we just want out of the way

7:38 PM
I initially thought it would be great to have just deleted questions in there, but then it's always good to have context about what happened as well. Moving the chatty messages to the Trash room might take away some of that context, or at least make it harder to piece together.
