Q: "Network path was not found" when trying to access a file share.

This is for a Windows XP SP3 machine, trying to access file shares on a Windows Server 2008 R2 system. The client had access to the server previously, and other clients on the same network are not having problems. Other network functions for the troubled client do not seem to be affected. When...

Is "File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks" installed under the network adapter? what an odd problem.... btw

@Kyle - I'll make sure to check that, the next time I look at the problem. But, I'm pretty sure it is.

Yea it is by default, but it looks like you already checked everything else that can get in the way... You might want to check if it can connect to any other shares just to help narrow down the scope of the issue...

@Kyle - The server it's connecting to is the only one with shares on the network. And, if it can't connect to \\servername\ or \\IPAddress\, it's not going to be able to get any further in the file share structure.

Just share out a folder from another xp machine.... should take about 60 seconds (maybe more if you have to turn the firewall off or walk someone else through it)

does that computer have more than one network adapter?

It's a laptop. So, it's got ethernet, wifi, and bluetooth. Wifi is disconnected ATM.

The user has reported that she was having problems with some sort of add-on adapter recently.

Ended up uninstalling the adapter.

Not sure how WINS settings would affect connecting by IP?

Yeah, most of the stuff I've found via Google seems to relate to SP2. Wonder what's up with that?

^I noticed that too... must have been something they fixed in sp3 that caused this problem often. I did see people used to have issues with WINsocks when uninstalling software that used it and SP2 seemed to have fixed the issue, so it's possibly related.

Maybe I should double-check that the system indeed is updated to SP3.

Sadly, it wouldn't surprise me to find that it might not be.

How much of a problem is it that I don't see a "Computer Browser" service in services.msc?

Thanks. Also, it looks like it's part of the "Client for Microsoft Networks" according to one post. Isn't that supposed to be bound to the NIC? I think this one's missing it.

Trying a reinstall of Client now.
