@C.Ross Actually this might be pertinent: an approach used in another play-by-chat RPG community is to start a new room when there's a game. They have their D&D room where they just talk about whatever (like we do), but when there's a game on, they don't just host it in that room - they create a new room, and conduct the game in there, with the participating players joining and the rest asked to keep quiet.
Chat rooms in that system aren't kept around forever unlike ours, so once they all wrap up, leave the room disappears. Over the course of a few dozen games, though, we'd add a few pages to the RPG.SE room list. Either that's totally ok and we shouldn't worry about doing so, or we should take an approach like: each DM has their own room and they should go back to theirs for each game they run.

@JonathanHobbs Sounds like a meta question?
04:00
@BESW About whether we should try to reuse rooms or whether it's OK to create a ton?
Whether it's okay to create a ton. Personally, I think One Room to Run Them All would be okay.
(Multiple GMs running sessions simultaneously is... possible, and a bridge to cross at the time.)
@BESW It is at the moment!
@BESW Entirely possible, so long as one person is not in two at once, which could cause... issues for them? And should involve the two running in separate rooms.
Right.

Q: Is it okay to create a lot of chat rooms?

Jonathan HobbsThere's a few of us who currently play games of Fate in the FATE Game Room. All our games and chatter take place in that room alone, but at some point, activity may become great enough that we may end up running two games simultaneously, or otherwise cease to play our games exclusively within tha...

What kind of advantages should Oghias get a +2 to create cleverly?
> I Surprise Myself: Because I’m more talented than I give myself credit for, I get +2 when Cleverly creating advantages...
> I Surprise Myself: Because I’m smarter than I give myself credit for, I get +2 when Cleverly creating advantages that don’t deal with people.
Thoughts?
04:55
I like Bruin Made Me Do It a lot, though I'm not sure when you'd invoke it. Uh... I Surprise Myself could really apply to all sorts of things, including people!
Yeah, I need to make that more.... nailed-down.
I understand it only in part because Bruin is the worst parts of himself, so he could invoke it doing something he would never normally do?
Bruin Made Me Do It is for when Oghias gets nasty: cruel, cynical, particularly aggressive.
Alright. I'm satisfied as long as I understand the sorts of things Bruin makes him do!
... I get +2 when Cleverly creating environmental advantages?
05:00
I wonder what that eliminates? Stuff like baking good scones I guess!
So what's he actually surprise himself with?
The success of his plans, basically.
Stronger and more physically capable than he thinks (even given how strong and physically capable he often is)?
Oh, more clever than he realises?
@JonathanHobbs No, it's a Clever thing.
I want the limitation to indicate that he's still not very good with people.
Oh, okay. Sounds fine with "Cleverly creating advantages that don’t deal with people." (or "don't directly involve people") - try it out and change it if you need to. :)
Thanks.
With My Bear Hands: Because I am a giant, I get +2 when I Forcefully attack with my fists.
I Like to Take My Time: Because I am deliberate, I get +2 to overcome obstacles when I can take time to do it Carefully.
Bruin Made Me Do It: Because Bruin is my alter ego, once per session I may gain the aspect “Bruin’s Influence” (+3 to remove) with two free invokes.
Thick Skin: Because I am calloused and hairy, I get +2 when I Carefully defend against physical attacks.
I Surprise Myself: Because I’m smarter than I give myself credit for, I get +2 when Cleverly creating advantages that don’t directl
I wanted to spread his stunts around so he doesn't fall into HULK SMASH territory.
05:12
I like 'em and give them my Seal of Acceptable
Take good care of him now, and feed him three times a day!
He's used to just a couple of deer a week.
No I mean my Seal of Acceptable
Or yours, now
Ah, yes. Of... course.
<_< >_> <_< u-uh... I hear giants have really bad allergies to eating seals
He can keep my Astral Seal and Seal of Rassilon company.
05:17
:D
I'm thinking that Thick Skin should be an extra mild consequence instead of +2 to defending.
It's more interesting that way.
> Thick Skin: Because I am calloused and self-reliant, I have a second mild consequence slot.

@HollandWilson Hi!
Watching Warm Bodies. It's a cheesy romantic comedy with just the right gimmicks and juxtaposition that it's pretty funny.
Survival romantic comedy.
@JonathanHobbs That is, indeed, a pretty crazy face.
I've been meaning to see that movie myself!
@BESW That sounds quite good!
@JonathanHobbs I like the flavor better, too: less "I can avoid damage" and more "I can endure despite damage, because I have to."
yeah, it was quite a show
06:15
@BESW That does sound really appropriate
a little different than most zombie movies out there recently
@Ethan Hi.
and it came up with pretty much exactly what I had expected and wanted out of it.
Cheesy movies that recognize that and play to it are pretty great.
yeah
just about anything that recognizes what it is can be pretty great
06:22
One thing I admired about Ebert was that he always respected a film that achieved its goals: if it knew what it wanted to do, and did it well, he would give it that credit whether or not he agreed with it or liked it.
That's how I feel about DnD 4e. I respect it enough to leave it alone.
mm
I have mixed feelings about it myself
Heh. It is, as Brian says, an excellent tactical engine. Possibly one of the best yet seen in RPGs.
there are some wonderful awesome things about it, and some not so wonderful not so awesome things
But it was still D&D, and the very nature of the D&D ethos means it's an uphill struggle to achieve many of the things I want to see in a game.

A: Is it okay to create a lot of chat rooms?

BESWBuilding on Holland's answer, The Back Room: Live Tabletop Games already exists. If we could get it unfrozen, it would probably suit our purposes well until such time as two games are running simultaneously (which is a cross-that-bridge-when-we-come-to-it scenario, I think).

07:12
@BESW I have been considering exchanging one refresh to give Stellata a stunt for creating advantages of some sort but I have no idea what I'd do exactly, so I may have to play things out first and see what kinds of advantages I'd like to go creating with her.
yeah
creating stunts is tricky
When I do I might seek some advice c(:
especially once you start exchanging refresh for it
Yeah I would definitely not want to go below 2 refresh
I will probably keep my 3 refresh unless I really start making use of refresh, but I suspect that's not something I'm strictly meant to do in the middle of a scenario
if you did, I would expect loss of fate points
but I dunno
maybe the future loss of FP is considered enough
I don't know specific rules for that
07:21
well I guess I'd have an easier time succeeding with style on creating advantages with a +2, which may be worth the trade-off. I'd also have an easier time just making basic success with them.
From the DFRPG Changeling template, which allows learning powers midsession:
> Regardless, any ability from this list may be added to your character’s sheet at any time during play, reducing current fate points and refresh as indicated by the ability’s cost.
well
I know that
Hobbs doesn't, and he's the one who asked about doing it.
but it has been indicated to me that DFRPG and other FATE systems are not entirely the same
O: What else does this Changeling template come with?
07:28
Faerie vulnerabilities.
Alright ;o
DFRPG changelings have one fay parent. They grow up as mortals, but at puberty they start gaining fay powers.
At some point they need to choose to go all-fay or all-mortal.
So you basically start out as a mortal, but with less refresh than most mortals, because you can pull in powers as you like from the list you and the GM came up with.
If you spend down to 0 Refresh, you become full fay and are an NPC.
If you decide to be a mortal, you lose all your powers, get the Refresh back, and get some bonus refresh on top of it.
Aw.

1 hour later…
08:34
that bonus refresh is something you get for choosing to be full mortal to begin with, by the way
it isn't something you can cheese out of choosing the changeling template, specifically

@C.Ross Hi.
@MrJinPengyou Hi.
14:02
@BESW good morning/evening
Two minutes into morning!
@BESW what do you do? You seem to be on chat 16 hours a day ...
I'm a self-employed graphic designer who works out of his home so he can help take care of his dad.
Also, I've had a really untenable sleep schedule since I got back from Haifa.
Cool
Not really, but your sentiment is noted.
14:11
sigh The limitations of text only conversation
well, I'll be around later
[wry] I know, just giving you a hard time.
See you around.
14:59
@Problematic [waves]
[incoherent muttering]
Child forgot how to sleep, apparently.
But, hello!
Oooh, my sympathies.
Thanks! Are we doing anything interesting today?
Mmm. I appear to be ravenous. You'll probably(?) be asleep before I return, but if not, I'm gonna take a shot at making some Bang! PCs
(I think you mean Lord of the Flies: The Piggening.)
@BESW Yes. Yes I did.
15:47
Need some bit of mechanics to prevent one character from immediately re-engaging an opponent who just conceded.
How a line like "Players, don’t be jerks about this"?
(Quoted from Fate Core 280, regarding not whinging if your extra has to get nerfed.)
Mmm, I don't really want to leave that up to interpretation in a PvP game, but it could work
I guess since stress clears at the end of an encounter, it's not really a big deal. Especially given that the conceding player will have extra FP
The player may also be able to narrate his concession so that he's hard to get at immediately, or in a better position.
I think I'm going to move development of the rules from GDrive to the discourse forum
Good idea.
15:55
@BESW yeah, I like that. Although, is one allowed to concede to their advantage?
> Concession gives the other person what they wanted from you, or in the case of more than two combatants, removes you as a concern for the opposing side. You’re out of the conflict, period.
> Yes, you lost, and the narration has to reflect that. But you can’t use this privilege to undermine the opponent’s victory, either—what you say happens has to pass muster with the group.
> That can make the difference between, say, being mistakenly left for dead and ending up in the enemy’s clutches, in shackles, without any of your stuff—the sort of thing that can happen if you’re taken out instead. That’s not nothing.

If I could get another look-over on Oghias, I'd appreciate it. I'm very aware of my inability to read my own PCs objectively.
Aspect: More Talented than I Look
I guess that'd be invoked by feinting about being dumb and for doing stuff all smart-like?
He's probably not going to be deliberately faking very often.
I'm imagining invoking it for talent and compelling it for looks.
(And clearly, talent requiring looks is right out.)
Is there a better way to say that?
How would it be compelled for looks?
Can you think of a quick example?
He looks dumb and hulking and he knows it.
If he'd come across the Princess Keredwel instead of Kirby, he could have been compelled to act ashamed, hide himself, etc.
But it'd be more for event compels: the Princess screams and denounces him as a hulking brute.
(Compels can be for things that happen to you as much as for things you do.)
@BESW How do you intend to use Lonely Mountain Man out of the mountains?
17:03
@BESW I see! ;o And if a compel happened where the Princess screams and denounces him as a hulking brute, who's getting compelled? Her?
@JonathanHobbs That'd depend on the exact scenario, but I think it generally is a compel on the person with the aspect, because it's complicating his life, not hers.
@BESW Alright! I guess it'd depend (sometimes it might complicate hers too)
@C.Ross It implies self-sufficiency, resourcefulness, knowledge of nature and its ways.
(but maybe that'd be her aspect getting compelled in that case)
I like Oghias in general and I'm gonna sleep
ttfn
(It also implies a wild, unkempt appearance, being unskilled in the ways of civilization, and other compellable things.)
17:06
@BESW I suspect there might be but as long as I understand it's also about not looking the part of cleverness at all, I'm happy with that
(I think it could do with conveying that more though: that he looks oafish, brutish, etc)
My Oafish Face Hides Talent or somesuch.
I will see if i come up with anything overnight
Goodnight :D
@C.Ross Does that seem straightforward?
17:33
@BESW Most of it
Eustace Conway (born Eustace Robinson Conway IV in 1961 in South Carolina) is an American naturalist and the subject of the book The Last American Man by Elizabeth Gilbert and the subject of an early episode of the weekly radio show This American Life. He is the owner of Turtle Island Preserve near Boone, North Carolina. Biography At the age of 12, Conway lived in the woods for a week. At 17 he moved out of his parents' home entirely so that he could live in a teepee in the woods. He has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and claims to have set the world record for crossing the United ...

I wonder if he's related to General Conway.
