It is, in the words of the late great Roger Ebert, "one of the great goofy gestures of recent cinema, a movie that doesn't deserve one nanosecond of serious analysis but has a kind of idiotic grandeur that makes you almost forgive it."
It's a film that constantly throws surprises at you, but as soon as they happen you say "Okay, I should've seen that coming from a mile off." It's simultaneously totally predictable and totally unexpected.

@JonathanHobbs It's actually a rather interesting character, and I think Reeves was a good choice to play him.
@trogdor He's selfish, and is frustrated that the world isn't letting him just be selfish. He's got a very clear idea of what he wants in life, and it's not happening.
