@XanderHenderson It starts much much earlier. Even before the baby is born, the parents in many societies are 'forced' to buy all the baby stuff based on the gender. Even the shopping aisles are segregated in many places. The colour stupidity is yet another thing. I suppose I could write an entire book on how dumb the stereotyping is, but then I would be wasting my time hahaha..
Then again, it's currently a statistical fact (who knows why) that almost all cranks in mathematics are male.
@quid For me, the simplest and definitely unarguable approach is to simply strongly discourage any statements based on assumptions with no basis.
For example, if a user calls another user "sir" or "madam" without knowing the gender, that is an unfounded assumption.
To me it doesn't matter if one comes from a culture in which every teacher is male or "sir" is a term of respect. Math SE is not the same culture, so what I said above applies.
Similarly, mathematical problems should focus on the mathematics and not invoke irrelevant distractions like bachelors, marriage and so on.
That is also why I never use names like "hall's marriage theorem" even though it is an established name.

@user21820 I really do need to go to bed, but: matheducators.stackexchange.com/questions/13705/…
@XanderHenderson Heheh so good night again! =)
Thanks for the link by the way.
For me, balls and boxes do well enough for many combinatorics problems.
And come on, who doesn't like elegant puzzles without wordy cruft?
Can't resist pointing out that some people have no issue with solving sudoku after sudoku with no real-world motivation whatsoever.
Not me though; I find it extremely boring compared to Tatham's puzzles especially Loopy with a honeycomb grid.
04:30
I revived a notif from @amWhy, but I couldn’t find the actual message when I clicked on it, it seems to be deleted.
@amWhy It may be a good decision to leave SE IF you have something better than this to live in.

9 hours later…
13:52
@Knight ,she knows what to do and moreover she didn't ask you
2
14:33
@Arjun May I know the reason for such a childish (haha) rudeness and that clichè?
Hope your Sunday is going well, @quid, and all!
14:54
^^^ @quid We started out in WI with a Sunny-Day (Sunday), but we've now become Cloudyday :-)
Or, actually, today is Semi-Sunday, for us!
@Knight ,that wasn't rudeness, it was a serious comment
@Arjun Yes it was a serious and rude and very unneeded comment.
15:27
@amWhy yes thank you it is going alright. Hope you had not too much noise yesterday.
15:40
@quid I must have been very tired. I slept like a baby!
@amWhy complete tangential, but the saying slept like a baby is in a way odd. Given how often they tend to wake up and cry loudly etc.
@quid I thought the same thing as I wrote it! ;-) How about "I slept as though I was a hibernating bear"?
@amWhy that's fun.
@quid Sunday Funday! :-)
@quid I have a new game:
Flow ...
@quid prompt for you to respond with an eligible response to my last comment.
Hint: Glow
@amWhy I thought you meant this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_(video_game)
@amWhy blow
15:51
Yay! Slow
@amWhy snow
@quid grow
@amWhy who many letters is one allowed to change?
@amWhy gros
While gross is more common gros is a word too.
@quid Well, Not sure... I'm improving. I was going to suggest Plow, because it follows the consanant + low, but is pronounced differently.
Maybe crow would have been better choice on my part
15:56
@quid ;-) Seriously, I've kept myself up at night, when trying to sleep, with such word games. Ground, round, pound, found, hound, bound, ...
@quid There you go!
fight, might, plight, height, right, blight, night, sight ...
:-)
Hint, mint, mind, wind, wild, mild, child, chilled, filled, thrilled.
@quid Now I'll keep you up at night!!
@amWhy what's new?
@quid ;D
And then there's alliteration: "Let's let lowly losers lie low."
2
@amWhy ,ah Poetry
16:05
(Note, alliteration doesn't require every word to begin with the same letter.)
@Arjun ;-)
"Those who courageously care can curtail catastrophes!"
@amWhy ,did you quote it?
I will make a nice print of this and keep at my study table
16:27
@Arjun No, no quote, I just came up with it! ;-)
@amWhy ,then i'll write amwhy after the quote :-)
as the author
@Arjun :-)
Ode to Socrates:
drink down the poison'd cup with passion
die quickly, as you've suffered death oft before
be peaceful, your quest for truth is found.
^^^ @Arjun I wrote that at age 16.
Socrates (; Ancient Greek: Σωκρᾰ́της Sōkrátēs [sɔːkrátɛːs]; c. 470 – 399 BC) was a Greek philosopher from Athens who is credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy, and as being the first moral philosopher of the Western ethical tradition of thought. An enigmatic figure, he made no writings, and is known chiefly through the accounts of classical writers writing after his lifetime, particularly his students Plato and Xenophon. Other sources include the contemporaneous Antisthenes, Aristippus, and Aeschines of Sphettos. Aristophanes, a playwright, is the main contemporary author to have...
@amWhy , i am the same age and it makes me feel like an absolute idiot(⊙_⊙;)
@Arjun You are not an idiot; trust me!
@amWhy , yeah i like this guy, i read his theories on politics and democracy and all that
then moved on to karl marx
16:40
@Arjun Another fascinating figure!
@amWhy ,everyone keeps telling me the other way around, thanks.
What is the meaning of Whatever, quid?
@Arjun You are not idiot; trust me.
@Arjun you were quid na?
@amWhy , while he lived he didn't even have enough money to buy a cigar for himself, now he's no more and we all read and think highly of him. Such a strange world we live in ;)
16:42
@abhas_RewCie Not sure, but I think prior to the creation of this post, I replied, when frustrated, to @quid, by saying "whatever, quid".
@amWhy @Arjun is @quid I guess? or what?
okay sorry
they are different
@abhas_RewCie , nah, i was qwid
oh okay...
confused
later changed my name with the help of @quid, thanks again man!
@abhas_RewCie No, @quid is not @Arjun. @quid is a moderator of this site.
16:44
@amWhy I think it was more the other way round.
@quid @quid said to @quid , Whatever, quid?
@quid Perhaps!
ok
What we talk here?
@abhas_RewCie no that @amWhy started to say "whatever, quid" much more after the room was named like this. I think when created I had actually a different name. There was some iteration even.
@abhas_RewCie Pretty much anything, as long is it is not mean. And generally, not a mathematics question. Scroll back awhile and you see there are questions about the site in general, and posts of music, (especially music about the sun, or about time. And games, etc.
16:48
Cool :)
Launch of the Russian "Luna-25" interplanetary station on the #Moon is scheduled for October 1, 2021. Electrical and functional tests of the device are planned to be completed in the summer of 2021.
#लूना25 #Луна25
Can we show our tweets here?
like embedding it here on chats?
@abhas_RewCie Nah, not a good idea.
okay....
deleted
@abhas_RewCie No problem. But glad to meet you!
I think at first I called it "quidquid quid cogit" which sounds good and was supposed to mean "whatever quid thinks" only that it does not mean that. Because while "cogito" is "I think", "he/she/it thinks" is "cogitat" not "cogit."
@amWhy I'm glad to meet you too :)
16:51
@abhas_RewCie :)
Yet then "quidquid quid cogitat" seemed odd. So I went for "quidquid quid"
@quid But isn't "whatever quid thinks" the rule of this site"? :P
@amWhy ,i agree
@Arjun :-)
16:54
@amWhy yes, but it is not always enforced.
A deer entered a Colorado store. The store owner gave him some chocolate chip cookies. The deer left the store and returned after half an hour with all his family members
Oct 7 '18 at 19:05, by quid
room topic changed to whatever, quid: Musings and chat about math, SE and more. All welcome. (no tags)
@abhas_RewCie ,that's natural tendency of all animals including humans
Oct 7 '18 at 19:09, by amWhy
whatever, quid!
@Arjun yep :)
16:58
teachers are the worsts at making jokes, i asked my teacher to give us a day off, here is the reply,img.memecdn.com/go-study_o_1010466.jpg
atleast this one was, some are like @quid,@amWhy,and of course our much loved professor X
@Arjun There was a teacher who pointed a ruler at me and said, "at one end of this ruler is an idiot", I asked which end...
Nobody loves a warrior until the enemy is at the gates

2 hours later…
18:58
I am sick of not having the courage to be an absolute nobody.
@amWhy, J D Salinger
this is a quote i would love to write on my tombstone
19:18
@Arjun I don't plan to have a tombstone, but something to the effect of "Huh... I don't feel so well," seems appropriate.
@XanderHenderson , to add some homour to it, i'll write, my last line was"hold my beer!"
@XanderHenderson, you look great!
i justt googled you
i saw one image of you wearing sunglasses
@Arjun That image is... uh... 15 years old?
I don't like being photographed.
19:34
@XanderHenderson ,you looked like the lead singer of a rock band tho ;-)
@Arjun That is precisely the reason I have an "anonymous" username. Please respect folks privacy.
We shouldn't even have to ask that, @Arjun. But some of us know there are folks who have nothing better than to do but search the internet to discover more about users on math.se. Users like you.
@amWhy If I were concerned about it, I would anonymize myself. I don't make myself hard to find. :)
@amWhy ,it won't happen again
That being said, @Arjun, there are a lot of other folk who do like to keep a little more private.
@XanderHenderson , i totally get that
19:41
@XanderHenderson Understood. :)
@Arjun No problem. I didn't mean to "chew you out." But this is an going issue for women, for various reasons. And woman or man, although I understand curiosity, we all deserve a little privacy. But I know you have only the best of intentions. Some others do not.
@amWhy , :-), maybe i'll understand it better when i grow up. Till then, good night@amWhy, @XanderHenderson, sorry again.
@Arjun seems flattering but what do i know
@EllieKesselman ,pardon my recalcitrance, what do u mean to say?
19:58
@EllieKesselman It's not flattering when one is stalked. That is not at all what @arjun was doing. I made that clear. But I've been stalked on-line, and it is not at all flattering.
@EllieKesselman And it carried over to identity theft, and phone calls, and worse.
@amWhy ,why would anyone do that?
it's inhumane
@Arjun Arjun, you aren't recalcitrant. No one is ever interested in me. I am just jealous. Ignore me. I'll get banned soon at this rate.
@EllieKesselman , i tend to be interested in people whom no one gives a second thought
@amWhy I didn't intend to suggest that Arjun was stalking you. I am just going to leave now. I apologize for disrupting things.
@EllieKesselman , no one's gonna ban you ;-)
20:19
@EllieKesselman I know that that, @Ellie. Feel free to post here. I am not offended by anything you said. I was just explaining a privacy issue, not directed @Arjun, nor you, just to help explain.
@EllieKesselman And no need to apologize. I don't think you disrupted anything here. :-)
Hello, @quid!
hello @amWhy
So @XanderHenderson is a rockstar?
@quid I mean, in my own mind, absolutely.
:P
@quid Of course he is!
@Xander Rocks!
I assume a rockstar is someone who knows about rocks? Maybe I'm missing something here? :-)
20:35
I thought rockstars were very old stars which had essentially burned out, and were composed mainly of heavier elements, such as those which are found in rocks.
Gneiss is nice.
That's what came up searching for "rock star".
but "rock star" is not the same as "rockstar".
Or is it...?
DUN DUN DUN
@XanderHenderson A rock star should be a geologist. A rockstar, someone topping the charts!
And a rodent is a rodent! :)
20:44
@amWhy When I fenced competitively and f'd up, the Maestro, who spoke mostly Italian, would scream at me "Why are you doing?! Fencing is not rock science!"
@XanderHenderson ?? Did he mean "Fencing is not rocket science?"
@amWhy I think so...?
@XanderHenderson Learn Italian! ;D
A rocket star is someone working for NASA!! :-)
@amWhy I mean, sure. I suppose that I could do that, but I haven't fenced for 12 years, so I am not sure that it would do me much good.
@XanderHenderson I understand ;-)
I'll be impressed, @Xander, if you find a gif of a gerbil or hamster fencing!
20:59
@amWhy OH MY GAWD! THAT WOULD BE FANTASTIC!

1 hour later…
22:09
@XanderHenderson Hah! Take care, Xander. I will miss you.
