@Qwid There was this question on Mathematics Meta, which seems somewhat related to your inquiry: What do you really like about working with/contributing to math-SE?
07:27
@MartinSleziak , thanks for the link :-)

2 hours later…
09:39
I'm a bit late to the discussion, but @quid's name can be mimicked by “ԛսіԁ” and the difference with the real quid can only be noticed by checking the encoding :)
10:25
@amWhy, did you take any maths Olympiads?
@quid,@XanderHenderson, what about you?
@Qwid only at a local level when I was rather young. I am not overly fond of this type of thing.
10:44
@quid , do u think it's necessary to score well on Olympiads to have a good academic life in maths?

2 hours later…
12:26
@Qwid no. In my opinion it's basically a useless activity. Sometimes I think I should have dedicated more time to math when I was younger but not in an Olympiad context. Yet, then, I did well enough, so it's alright.
@quid ,let me guess, are you German?
To qualify the above a bit. It's also fine, maybe even desirable, to engage in "useless activities" if one enjoys them. I mean I play chess which also not really useful. But it's not something one should feel one needs to do.
3
@quid ,what were you doing when you were younger?
@quid , chess boosts the thinking capacity which is helpful in maths
@Qwid watch tv.
@quid , me too,😏😏
The first serious blow I received was in 3 rd grade when I flunked all subjects expect English
That's when I started working out maths by myself
12:37
What is a "useful" activity, @quid? How do you define "useful"? "All work and no play make quid a dull boy"
@Qwid it's good that you started working on this. I think it is best to try to advance well on the school work.
@amWhy certainly, that's what I said in the next comment.
@quid , now it feels like I shouldn't have, lectures no more surprise me and I find myself doing the home work in no time(even after cutting classes)
What I meant to say is that I do not consider it as a particularly good preparation, and certainly not a necessity, for a career in academia to focus on such competitions.
@quid Fair enough. It is actually healthy and useful to engage in a few "useless activities", particularly in youth, but we all need to find a way to "Play", as well. But I agree with your sentiments about math competitions. If one feels they "ought" to participate in them, that's different than having tons of fun doing so.
Sorry for interrupting the good conversation here.
@amWhy , currently the only fun thing is to watch street dog fights
12:43
@amWhy but you did not interrupt you joined. :-)
@amWhy ,we are foutunate to have you here now!
\awkard silence
There is always "echo"
And PING-PONG
But I have another meeting soon so I'll leave soonish.
@quid ,ping pang!
I was just going to play PING-PONG! stole my line, @quid.
Or Dang!, ding, dung, deng, dong, ...
@amWhy Ring, Rang, Rung maybe.
I'll need to leave soonish too, @quid, @Qwid, @quad, @quip, etc. etc. :-)
@amWhy don't forget quick and quack
@quid ,good at annagramming
...and quirk, and quill
@quid has a quirk about quacking, quite a lot!
:-)
@amWhy well. Fortunately I need to leave now. :-)
12:55
@quid Ha! You're just so fun to tease! :-)

1 hour later…
14:13
@amWhy whoaaaaaa what on earth happened?(you can leave this on read if you don't want to answer btw)
@amWhy +1 for that alliteration tho..
14:57
@sai-kartik All said in jest! I've never known @quid to quack (unless quid is a brilliant duck!)
@Qwid I've never participated in any kind of mathematics competition.
I find them a bit silly, and I don't think that they have a great to do with long-term mathematical ability.
Similarly, spelling bees have very little to do with writing ability.
3
@XanderHenderson I thought of the same analogy earlier! Thanks for posting it.
@amWhy not quite sure i understand the meaning behind, but whatever..
@XanderHenderson true that..
@XanderHenderson I don't know if you've seen this from me before, but congratulations on successfully defending your theses (and earning those two letters that you would sign everywhere now) !!
15:17
@sai-kartik Alliteration, and nonsense. By the way, in english, ducks "quack", hence my assurance that quid is not a duck and hence does not quack. I'm sorry if you don't get the humor in that. But whatever.
@amWhy no i meant you saying you were gonna leave and all that
i dont get how that correlates with the alliteration you've made (if it even remotely does, which i think isnt the case)
@sai-kartik Yes, there are times when I reach a point where I think leaving may be in my best self-interest. But I do not act rashly on those feelings, but rather reach out. The post you replied to when you stated "not quite sure i understand the meaning behind, but whatever" was exactly the post I previously explain. If you wanted to address I previous post of mine, then you should link that post when addressing me. In any case, you know little of the harassment I've received over time.
@XanderHenderson ,good explanation
I don't expect you or most users to know about it. And so my expressed concerns may come across to some as confusing. I'm sorry for that. But sometimes the only way I keep sane on this site is by expressing my concerns. But I do not mean to alarm anyone. I am sorry I didn't explain this more fully. But I usually work through such frustration with the help of friends here. I wish you well, @sai-kartik.
@sai-kartik Three letters. I see you didn't win any spelling bees. :P
But thank you.
It is also, perhaps, worth noting that I didn't get into mathematics until after I failed out of college for the second time.
15:27
@XanderHenderson ,the ting is, that s the only thing I won!
I started as a Russian studies major with a theater minor.
@sai-kartik It has nothing to do with my alliterations. That's the beauty of this site. Not everything a person says is intimately connected. Usually it's not.
But never went to class, and was politely asked to leave after two years.
@XanderHenderson I was just going to ask you that!
@XanderHenderson ,student for life man! Phew
15:28
So I spent a summer and a semester at a CC getting my GPA back over 2.0 so that I could attend the state school. I went there as an anthropology major, with an archaeology emphasis.
@XanderHenderson , what's CC?
I almost finished that degree, but got into a fight with one of the old silverbacks in the department. Being an arrogant 21 year old, when he called me arrogant, I made a comment about pots and kettles.
Community College: usually 2 year institutions.
It should come as no surprise that I didn't pass that class.
And now I need to go make breakfast for my daughter.
@XanderHenderson , breakfast?
15:30
@XanderHenderson Will you make me some pancakes?
Where do u live?
@Qwid It's 8:30 am for Xander.
@amWhy , I am eating them RN,😏😏
@amWhy , where on earth do u live?
Japan?
Alaska?
@Qwid Wisconsin, (US). Do I strike you as being really remote?
@amWhy ,u told me that,
15:32
@Qwid :P
@amWhy ,yep. When it's 3 in the night and my mom shouts at me for banging keys on keyboard
@Xander I want pancakes! I'll send my insulated drone to pick them up, and return them. I prefer they are served with butter and maple syrup, so please oblige! :-)
At that time it's barely 4 in WI
@XanderHenderson, where do u live?
If u r comfortable in telling
@Qwid I keep strange hours, which means I am up between, typically, 3:00 am and 8/9:00 pm. (CDT)
@amWhy ,I hope your mom doesn't shout at your sleeping patterens
15:37
@Qwid No, I lost my Mom years ago, too young. But my cat is to blame for me early rising! MEOW! MEOW!
@AkashGaur, namaste ji, delhi wale se mile h bade dino me
@amWhy , you have a cat😍😍😍
@amWhy , sorry for that
@Qwid Yes! Shai! Eleven years old!
@Qwid :P He's a wonderful cat!
I never had one, but I keep on feeding stray dogs and cats
Only one of them was very close to me, she used to sneak in my house and sleep with me in my blanket (purring all the time)
Baby Shai ^^^^^ (@1 year old).
@Qwid You're a natural, feeding strays, and a kitty-cat finding her way to snuggle with you!!
@amWhy ,is it wrong for me to be jealous?^_^
She's sooooo cute
15:43
@Qwid I'm sure there's a cute kitty-cat waiting for you!!
@amWhy ,alas, my favourite one is no more, she died last year
I have others now, which are also cute but........
@Qwid So sorry. That's the hard part of caring for pets...
No words to express
@amWhy ,yes, so short lifespan they have
@amWhy I'll assume that's a positive.
@Qwid I totally understand. Outdoor cats don't survive long. But indoor cats, can live very long. My first cat, Mary, lived to the age of 21 years! And was very healthy up until her last month. The world, particularly the developed world, is not kind to stray pets.
15:48
@amWhy ,some still survive, I know a dog who is now in his last days(18-19 year old)
@quid Absolutely, positive. You have a wonderful sense of humor! But I have come to suspect that "tease" means different things to different people. When I use it, I mean only to "kid/joke with someone", but I suspect some see the word as a synonym to "taunt". I think it's likely cultural or regionally specific. When I've referred to "teasing", I've always meant it in a fond sense, never in a mean sense.
@amWhy ,I believe quid was teasing u this time,
@Qwid Ha! Could very well be! :-)
I want to solve a high-dimensional integral using Monte Carlo integration. Does anyone know of a suitable package for Python that I can use? I have heard of Stan, used for statistics, but I am not sure it is suitable for a simple integration
16:05
@amWhy don't worry, I took it that way. Otherwise I'd just have kicked you out! ;D
@amWhy I suggested blueberry pancakes. The child wanted an omelette with mushrooms, onions, and cheddar. So that is what she got.
And now I need to finish typing up this review which was supposed to be finished last week.
@XanderHenderson Okay, I'll take that!
@amWhy Too bad; she at it all.
@XanderHenderson You'll just have to make me one, then! :P
@quid,@amWhy,@XanderHenderson, this one's for u, guess the person

2 hours later…
17:50
@Qwid what about a tortoise / turtle :p ( just the disadvantage that they are extremely boring at times)
Just that maybe your great grandchildren would watch them breathe their last..
And speaking of songs with sun in their title, I don't really have one, but I would suggest you guys to check out the artist James Sun on Spotify ( I agree not all his songs are great) but the topmost hit is absolutely a marvelous piece of music (no it's not classical)
@sai-kartik But they're cute in their own reptilian way.
Oh and btw @Qwid, you're from India? Ham to dilli wale Nahi, par Phir bi, yeh to bata Sakta hoon ki dilli ki vat lag rahi hogi is garme se..
@sai-kartik Feel free to link it here. You've peaked my curiosity.
@amWhy true that..
@amWhy Sure thing. Hang on for a couple mins
@sai-kartik ,only if I marry :-) I have no intentions of doing that
18:02
@Qwid hahaha 😂
@sai-kartik , kaya karte ho bhai?
@Qwid jee adv clear Karne ki koshish 😬
@amWhy , lizards are also reptiles😅😅
12th me?
@sai-kartik kitne saal se😏?
@Qwid doosri attempt hai Mera😅
@sai-kartik ,do or die raid!
Pehele kitna aaya rank?
Acha h drunk on you
18:06
@Qwid Pehele to qualify hi Nahi hua :(
Ab hua?
@Qwid Haan ji
Pehele kitna percentile?
@Qwid exam hi Nahi Likha ab tak xD
@sai-kartik , mains puch raha hoon
18:08
Please, to be polite to all users, please speak in English in math.se chatrooms. I've said this many times before, and you should know this by now, @Qwid.
@Qwid pehele mains me to 90 Aaya tha. Ab Jan me 96 Aaya tha. April tho postpone hi ho Raha Bai ab tak
@amWhy oops sorry didn't know that 😬
@amWhy ,I don't realise what language I speak in hurry, sorry.
@sai-kartik No problem. No one has yet made that clear to you. My post wasn't to scold, just to inform. :-)
Like when I wrote jee mains in 2019 I got 90 percentile and now in Jan 2020 I got 96
@amWhy gotcha!
@Qwid No problem. I understand!
18:11
For example if @amWhy learns Russian and talks to an old friend you will not naturally speak in Russian, mother tongue dominates
@sai-kartik nice bro
@Qwid thanks 😅 btw what do you do?
@sai-kartik , currently nothing just laying and see homework pile up
11 grade
Si, y por supuesto, en espanol? Es dificil para otros a comprender.
@amWhy , ah spanish
Hola, amigos
@Qwid Yes, but I don't have the proper keyboard!. Hola!! Como estas??
18:14
@Qwid 11th grade was literally a joke for me xD
@amWhy , fine and mixed feelings
@sai-kartik , which coaching?
@amWhy, btw, I don't know spanish
@Qwid mixed feelings?
@Qwid Just as I don't know Indian languages ;-)
@amWhy , sad at times and happy cuz I have friends and life has bright side
@amWhy , mainly one, hindi
@Qwid I understand completely.
@Qwid Allen . You?
18:18
@sai-kartik , o teri, same here
Chandigarh
Which batch?
@Qwid rn leader batch
@amWhy , when did you feel like that?, School days?
@sai-kartik , kota?
@Qwid blore
@sai-kartik , what's that?
@Qwid Bangalore 😅
18:20
Rn is like top batch?
@Qwid nonono I meant right now, leader batch xD
@Qwid Yes. And at times since. Sometimes sadness and happiness are hard to separate, and the deepest of thinkers, throughout history, have experienced both great sadness, and great joy. The same is true of great artists, whether their art is expressed in words (literature), or art, or philosophy, or math. But I think you are also a deep thinker.
@amWhy , it would be unethical to include myself in that list of thinkers
@sai-kartik , I am in A1
Is it good?, I think AA1 is better
@Qwid isn't A1 like the top batch ?!! Wow
We don't have that kind of system here down south
Here it's only leader and enthusiast/nurture batch
@amWhy ,thanks for compliments, time will tell
18:24
So don't count yourself out! But I admire humility (in the sense of "being humble", so I admire how humble you are, yet also how talented.
@Qwid You have a lifetime to live. And I am quite impressed by your breadth and depth of knowledge. You will do quite fine, no doubt.
@amWhy, excuse my curiosity but what have you studied in college ( if you've been to one of course)
@amWhy, thanks for all comments, they really made me feel better about life
@sai-kartik , long list as I remember
@sai-kartik I majored in math, philosophy, and psychology. I went on to earn a PhD in philosophy, and then earned my PhD in mathematics. I just love learning.
@sai-kartik PhD in maths, PhD in philosophy from university of st Louis?
18:29
@amWhy Whoa.. that's a lot of learning..
@Qwid Washington University in St. Louis.
@amWhy , memory lapse😔
@sai-kartik Any true scholar is always a learner! ;-)
@Qwid You remembered quite well, actually!
Just for reference, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, was a life long learner
@amWhy true.. my ultimate ambition is however to work for India's space program.. so if I get absorbed into it after my undergraduation, I guess I'll roll with it ..
18:32
@sai-kartik The moment one stops being curious about Why, (note my username), is the moment one stops learning.
@Qwid of course.. great man..
@sai-kartik , ISRO or DRDO?
@Qwid isro
@amWhy hmmm I can start to see the roots of your username tho :p
@sai-kartik That's a wonderful ambition! Just keep asking Why?! :)
Nice
18:33
@amWhy I already do and my parents are getting slightly annoyed at times xD
@amWhy , sadly the question WHY? Is crushed in JEE preperation!
@sai-kartik , same here
@sai-kartik I bet! As were my parents.
@Qwid IKR!! "this is just an exception. Learn it. " Very few teachers actually encourage learning the subject instead of just giving a short trick to use in the exam.
@Qwid I know. That's unfortunate. It happens too, in standardized testing in the US.
@amWhy , atleast the number of test takers of SATs are less
@sai-kartik , I had a teacher but had to leave him for Allen
18:37
@Qwid yea.. Around 1.2 million write jee every year
One has to navigate two paths: succeed in the standard tests, but retain enough of a stubborn streak to continue pursuing answers to one's Why's! That's a tall order, no doubt, but don't every let that voice asking Why? die!!
@sai-kartik Roughly 5k get okish branches
@Qwid that, my friend, is extremely sad :(
@Qwid yeah.. hoping I can make the cut this time..
@amWhy , trying to do that, still struggling
@sai-kartik , first thing is to just sit like a man free of all duties, take out all you learnt on the questions, u will surely make it
@Qwid I'd say you're doing a good job at doing just that. One goal might be suppressed to accomplish the other goal, but don't ever deny, over time, all of who you are and all of what you are curious about. And the most successful in any enterprise, are fueled by the inner passions they never let die.
18:42
@amWhy , I will spend a few minutes on thses words now before retiring to bed. GN @amWhy, @sai-kartik
@Qwid doing just that.. btw, gn..
@amWhy , like this man,, dw.com/en/…
@Qwid Sleep well. And you too, @sai-kartik !
I gotta go and crush some ray optics questions so I'll get going. Cya @amWhy and @Qwid
@Qwid Wow, quite inspiring!
18:45
@amWhy totally..
19:09
@quid How's your day going, thus far? I hope more well than not well!
@amWhy difficult to answer.
@quid Well, I've been known to ask difficult questions. Let's hope the rest of the day makes it decisively a good day!
Or at least slightly in favor of a good day, rather than a bad day, @quid.
@amWhy that seems more realistic, than it becoming a good day. But let's see.
@quid Anything you want to vent about? I hope the source of the uncertainty isn't math.se.
@amWhy no it is not specifically math.se. Just a lot of things going on.
19:20
@quid That's a Monday for you :-). I saw a question earlier, either here or in CURED, from @Knight, about whether any time or date has been set for the next mod election (along with a question about who's running, but that can't be known until the nomination phase of the election.) I tried to scroll back in this room to check, where the question appeared, but there's been a lot of activity in this chatroom today, so I'd have to go back further.
Ahh, @quid, it was asked in CURED, to Martin Sleziak, earlier this morning (or late morning, early afternoon, for you): chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/54726211#54726211
It looks like @MartinSleziak responded here in the mods' office.
Okay, @quid, I just saw your response in the mods' office. Sorry to have distracted you.
@amWhy it was not a distraction. To the contrary it was actually a useful pointer which made me find the message in the office.

2 hours later…
21:01
@quid I was just trying to give you heads up, but it seems you beat me to it! :-)
Hello, @allesia_b!
21:19
@AlexanderGruber are you online?
21:30
@allesia_b I also notified Alex so that he does not miss it.
22:08
Beyond that I am glad you paid a visit to my room @allesia_b You should always feel welcome. Sometimes it's quite fun, at least I think so.
Do you like Beethoven?
That's the latest theme.
For another classic we did not yet have.
22:25
Sorry I'm sorry I'm sort of fixated on Beethoven's 9th, especially flash mobs:
And this, which I may have already shared!
@quid That was amazing!
22:47
@amWhy yes, also I wish I could type so fast :-)
@quid I know! The way her fingers flew on the piano! :-)
22:59
Quite beautiful, and a flashmob!
Gotta change it up a bit, from Beethoven, to Lennon, etc.!
And back again, when timely!
